If you’ve followed recruiting for any length of time, you understand that rating players – while there is not an exact science – is something that everyone believes they do well.
The secret to truly evaluating and rating a player is not to sit behind a computer for hours and watch hours of film. While it’s great to see prospects perform, only relying on that film that millions have access to, is crazy.
To anyone who has done this and still believe they can go off what a coach says or by just watching a highlight video – will follow football recruiting for years and never really get what this is all about.
Last year, we had the opportunity to watch parts of 112 games. That is a lot of players that you get to see run, jump, throw and tackle. That is also an abundance of prospects that may be able to wow people with their speed and skill level, but fall way short when it comes to character. The things that an athlete can do off camera will already put those who watch the highlight reel only, behind the 8-ball with perhaps the most important thing – what kind of potential teammate are you selling me?
Since August of 1970, when we picked the first south Florida high school rising junior class, we have been there year after year, selecting some of the area’s premier underclassmen.
While today, it is almost too easy to choose some of the elite players, it was not always that way. Before the camps, combines, 7-on-7 and other enhancements that made this so easy to gain exposure, athletes, coaches and parents had to work hard for the exposure.
We have had the pleasure of going to watch and evaluate and not rely on what the fan websites say, like many lists today that are compiled.
The huge thing about our lists, which come from dozens of exposures and watching the athletes live and in pads, is we promote every player throughout the course of a year. Not just the “5, 4 and 3 stars”, but any prospect that wants to get promoted to colleges across the country.
This has never been about putting one athlete over another when it comes to exposure. We have always promoted everyone, so while people are caught up in lists, like these that may have a problem where someone is rated, keep in mind that the bottom line is exposure and nobody promotes and gets more athletes out there than we do.
Remember, this is a list that reflects only a few of the prospects to keep an eye on. While many get consumed by lists like these, you can guarantee one thing that nobody else can or will tell you. We will promote everyone in south Florida, and that is something we continue to prove for over 40 years now.
