Attended tonight in Atlanta. Neat event to meet Coach (Doctor) Boeheim, emceed by Dave Cohen.
Bumped into him walking around on our way in, and we briefly chatted about Dave Shackleford (friend of mine went to HS with him).
This was not a photo opp nor a Q&A event (he had to immediately run to the airport since their benefit is this weekend), at least not the main session.
Some things discussed (the more private stuff is at the end):
- NIL is not really good for the sport. It’s become nearly universities paying players, and it’s a one year game. No more 3-4 years building and improving squads.
- The expanded ACC is stupid. It’s to get more money. But you make more, you spend more. And college athletics bleed money.
- So UCLA traveling to Rutgers in the middle of winter for a volleyball game is really bad.
- Talked about great players. Troy Weaver was way ahead on Carmelo, and got JAB to go to Baltimore during the season - Carmelo could “win it all for us”
- Also was positive about Tyler Roberson (who was in the audience), Josh Pace (one of two players whose mother’s cried when he was there - the other was Stephen Thompson)
- Rony Siekaly and him really butted heads his first two years (he was from a war torn country, played HS in Greece and had bad habits). But once he played for Lute Olsen on the USA juniors (??) he got his ass kicked and changed his attitude
- Back in the day, players studied (including those who went on to be doctors like Hal Cohen). Since then, they’ve had to check on classes and schoolwork.
- He mentioned something about “hey Conrad McRae”, but I forgot what it was.
- A little about the European players doing so well in the NBA (this was early on in the session, but connected to the thing below)
- Spoke about taking a chance on Marek Dolezaj. Didn’t speak any English, and look at what he became. Including taking the full on charge from Zion.
- He was really tough on refs - he thinks they all suck. Did not mention any names. I bet we could.
- Told a story about when Bob Knight was an AC at Army, and before a game, standing two feet from the refs, said “these guys suck - they couldn’t coach a high school game.” SU went on to win that game.
- The NBA gives a lot of feedback and coaches refs - right after games. In NCAA, the refs just go home and on the next one the next day.
- Why didn’t he go to the NBA? It’s a players game. If coaches have 2-3 bad years, they’re fired. (The question started around those who coached for him or with him, and their limited success like Pitino)
- When he coached the Olympics, the talent was unbelievable. But the players discipline and Kobe were unrelenting. When they were up 40 over the Dominican, Kobe stole two inbound passes and they were up 46. The Dominican guy (who played in college) walked off, and the USA called timeout to cool things down.
- You know you’re old when you’re coaching the sons of players. Multiple.
- The zone was great for us, as we were a change up from everyone running man
- Everyone misses the Big East. It was more even/fair; the ACC is NC biased with 22 of 25 years won by UNC/Duke
- Didn’t say anything about HCAA. At all.
- Not much about his sons.
- People should chill out, watch the players and coaches, and enjoy watching the game
- He can hear us yelling at the TV and the games
- Everyone in the audience has been a coach at one time. Mostly the men, the woman enjoy watching…
Now in the booster meeting, they did take questions…
- Why did Maliq leave? All his friends are gone. He’ll be a bench player at Duke behind their top recruiting class.
- College sports are being run by presidents, not basketball people.
- The NCAA Selection Committee equally sucks. They don’t know basketball. He noted Indiana State should have been in this year.
- More on NIL and how the game is getting bad. It’s a year to year thing, and getting worse. No way out right now.
- No questions on recruits, current players, nor William Patterson news today.
