Most new stadiums are trying to pitch it as part of a bigger commercial/residential park type situation. Mostly because the private business people want lots of public funding and this idea is easier to justify.

I personally don't believe that and I wish more fans were aware of the tricks around stadium building that usually screw them because they get stuck with the bill.

I am beginning to think she is trying to leverage many new avenues for state and county aid to the city. Can't blame her on that.

That said, I think the inner harbor is the best place for a new stadium and use the connective corridor to bus students down there. If they can build Carousel/destiny on that land then they can build a stadium there. The biggest obstacle at the Inner Harbor would be Sen Defrancisco if Congel wanted in. Congel could be a huge doner in many ways and COR has a very big footprint to add what ever they wanted to do there right around the harbor.

Plus the state does own quite a bit land down there. At the Kennedy square site the stadium would have to claim many roads and private businesses and relocate the Veterans Affairs building and Welch Terrace. Will the feds roll over easy on that move as the Stadium sits right on top of those two obstacles.

If Miner has been in the know, she comes off even more foolish that she can't get what she wants as part of a MUCH bigger deal with massive political interests.

that's only if the Fine Mess pools all their donations together in a lump some. I was told a parking garage would go there,so that kills tailgating.

And the stadium site does not say football or basketball on the drawings as I had heard six months ago it was just a B.B. arena that was being mentioned for that site but as you can see these drawings say they are from two years ago.

What I think what is going here is that we have many different groups with different agendas running to the media as they all will want to take credit on an individual group basis if this does go through.

This is not the same project as the one Mahoney and Cuomo leaked. The article clearly states that the stadium in this 2-year old was placed on a plot next to Kennedy Square, not in it. The footprint is clearly smaller than the multipurpose stadium being proposed now for the 12-acre Kennedy Square site. Looks like a b'ball-only arena. We've all known about various proposals for new stadiums circulating for years. We were all blindsided by the recent series of articles. And even Miner could have been.

I've been poking around all week on this stuff, and here's what I have been able to piece together. While some of the details may not make complete sense, the view from 10,000 feet is pretty clear.

Cantor was all about growth. Particularly growth in enrollment. In her time here, undergraduate enrollment grew about 25%. That can be viewed as good or bad. Many here lamented the drop in the Universities rankings and blamed it on relaxed admissions. I think you might be able to tie that all together. One person mentioned that 20k undergrad enrollment some day in the future may have been one of her goals. With increased enrollment and future plans to grow further and with SU already bulging at the seams to "fit" all of these students (I was told some transfer students are actually housed in a hotel), University property was of high value for academic purposes. Thus the talk and the plan to use Dome property for academic purposes.

This would necessitate a new athletic building and thus the 2 year old plan shown here. Cantor and Gross were big proponents. I'm not sure why the "new" plan financed mostly by the state and county popped up, but I assumed it was a combo of cost and the state wanting to out their stamp on local economic development. But one or the other were real plans and was supported by Cantors vision at SU. Gave her more real estate and have Gross a new toy.

Now comes the new chancellor and while I don't know his vision, I'm hearing he may be more of the mindset that the Dome property isn't necessarily needed and growth in enrollment should be slowed or reversed. He isn't tossing out any idea but is going to do his own due diligence and slowed down the "decision". The indecision on a new facility may be as much SU as it is the Mayor. But that's not a bad thing necessarily.

Having said that, and the Chancellor even alluded to it, other options are also being considered, such as a major renovation to the Dome. It was mentioned that a $100m makeover could be on the table. Besides numerous changes to the inside of the Dome, the big change could be adding to it with a building attached on the west side of the Dome. This would be a 4-5 story building that would go out from the Dome and over Irving in some way.

The building would serve many purposes, some which I forget, but included offices, classrooms, house Sports Management, changing and/or locker rooms for non-athletic events, media rooms, etc. The idea would also be to increase the number of days a year the Dome is used and be able to handle any type of event. The goal would supposedly be 200 days a year that some have estimated would be several millions more a year to the coffers.

I agree on the inner harbor, but I think a momorail ala Disney, connecting the airport, Destiny, the stadium, downtown, armory, SU & Skytop would be really cool and bring Syracuse into the future.

New chancellor = take some time to sort through strategies and options, including timing of next Campaign. Would be surprising if anything happens on stadiums (other than upgrades to Dome) in next 12 months. Just a hunch.

makes since...I have heard many different versions this week. I know while working at the new life sciences building talk of using the Dome's footprint was coming from of their own people and first hand it was.

I would think if its not getting done for this year they will hope to have something concrete to present by next year in which the mayor and all officials can get behind. With a new chancellor its not that surprising that he wants to evaluate what they currently have before deciding to build new or renovate

I'm OK with a Dome on the moon and all. We definitely would hold the edge on unique facilities for some time while keeping our "Dome" identity. But what about parking and tailgating? How will the students get there? Will Marshall Street be extended? Will there be a Varsity's and a Manny's? C'mon, we need answers!
