Chris Bell to return

Every freshman that decides to come back is a Sophomore Leap lottery ticket. I think Benny fits there, too.

Are they each going to announce? Is that one of the gifts that the transfer portal has given us?

Benny and Bell were both starters last year. I have to imagine a big reason Benny came back is because he’s expected to be a major contributor. Bell right now is arguably our most consistent shooter, at least as of now.

Then there’s JJ at the 2. Hopefully Judah comes back and is the 1.

If the rumors are true about Moore/Red going with a 3 guard lineup, that’s less minutes available at the forward group .

I would like both of them back. It’s more about if there will be enough PT to go around and keep everyone happy (again, this is assuming Judah comes back AND we add another impact transfer (Moore).

Maliqs rebounding and size is important.

Taylor is more a 2/3 to me, which means he’d potentially be behind Moore, Mintz and JJ. Not to mention Copeland.

I think Taylor has a ton of potential and I hope he stays, but i could see him leaving
Yeah. I think Bell and Taylor are equal when it comes from the 3 point line. My question is who between those 2 guys will provide additional value elsewhere on the court. I don't think anyone goes into next season penciled into the starting lineup not named Judah, Jj or Edwards. I think the other 2 jobs (presuming those names above return) are open. If we want to run we will need at least 2 guys who capably clean the glass. So perhaps it Judah, JJ, Benny, Brown and Edwards? If that doesn't happen then Red will need who ever is SF to help. Certainly a guy like Moore has shown he can do that. The jury is still out on Bell and Taylor regarding that. Benny will have to be a glass cleaner as well if he plays the 4. Some interesting questions going into next season.

You're just going by the look test, though. Some guys need to add bulk, other guys just strength is fine. There are plenty of thin guys who are strong who have had nice careers.
Don't confuse skinny with weak. I'll take a skinny wing with a 36" vertical over a bulkier guy with a 24" vertical. Explosive power is underrated on this board.

I agree with you in one particular, explosive athletes are good for basketball.

On the other hand, the program up till now has taken a blasé approach to weights. The lack of muscle development in our basketball players when compared to other programs is abysmal. They should be able to completely transform their bodies under a full time strength and conditioning program within a year of arriving. Yet year after year guys come back from their off-season workouts looking just as childlike in their builds as when they left.

And year after year, we get dominated by strongmen with few basketball skills because we can't compete physically. How is it possible Edwards is only 230 (with little muscle definition) and Williams is only listed at 8 pounds heavier than when he arrived? Don't get me started on Dolezaj trying to play center for us having gone four years without gaining any strength and mass.

Some of our players have done it themselves, but by and large it's a systematic weakness with the program. This is one of the biggest changes I hope Red makes in the program, adding proper dedication to strength and conditioning so we can compete physically.

Our lifting program rarely produces the huge results other schools see. I'd like to see skinny guys become jacked during their careers here instead of slightly less skinny.

We aren't asking wide receivers to grow into tackles here. ;)
Basketball lifting is tricky as it can have a negative effect on shooting.

Taylor is a 2. Hes not capable of playing the 1 or 3. In my opinion he is buddy light.

WILD (with no inside info in any way) prediction (more like a guess)... we are going to get a Jesse IG post sponsored by Upstate Shredding announcing his return.

And all will be well.
I don’t that’s a realistic possibility, since Jesse can’t receive NIL money. And Weitsman isn’t even in the picture as of right now.

I think Taylor is big enough to be the big guard in a three guards lineup or a smaller forward if you prefer to think of him that way. 6'6" and over 200 pounds isn't small... And unlike some of our guys, he's seen the inside of a weight room.

Jesse can indeed get NIL $, while the team is abroad this summer (Israel, IIRC).
Kentucky got their foreign-born player paid that way just last year.

Also - we don't know to what extent AW is or is not still in the picture.
And/or what other booster(s) / NIL cooperatives can step up to do what needs to be done.

Lastly - Jesse's GF is now on the coaching staff for the Cuse field hockey team.
So, he's certainly got some additional motivation to stick around the 315.

Glad to see that Chris is returning. No real surprise, as he is enrolled in the Maxwell School and is obviously a serious student for whom SU is a chance for more than simply his athletic interests.

I think a lot of fans forget that (except for Carey) all of the frosh were thrown into the fire and expected to contribute to varying degrees. That is unusual by historical standards at SU. As a result, all but Judah (and even he to a lesser degree) were inconsistent this year. They all have some major areas to develop. Frosh are like that. Often, sophs are too.

The key takeaway regarding Chris (as well as anybody else who comes back) is that Red has faith in him. In these times of getting paid/NIL/no, let's just call it getting paid because that's what it really is, plus the ability to hit the portal anytime a player wants to, well...

The shoe is on the other foot too, and we forget that. If a coach, especially a new coach, doesn't feel like you are in his longterm plans, you will be encouraged to leave. To a degree, that has always been the case with upper-classman guys at the end of the bench or with headcases. I suspect that it will be even more common now and even with younger guys. If a guy is not projected to be a factor over the next 1-2 years, it will be easy for the coach to say "there are guys we like better in the portal, so you need to go and get paid somewhere else. To quote Michael Corleone "it's not personal, it's business." Only Jon Bol didn't end up with a horse's head in his bed. As far as we know...

So Red has faith in Chris. Therefore, I do as well. There may come a time when Red doesn't merit that trust from the fans but for now, I am all-in on both he and his decisions. Glad to have you back, Chris.

Right - I was more responding to the whole “sponsored by Upstate Shredding” Instagram post idea. If Jesse is getting NIL, it wouldn’t be broadcasted that way.

Assuming we play a faster more aggressive style I would think we land on a core of 5 guards, 3 forwards and two bigs. That would be Judah(?), JJ, Quadir, JT plus a txfr at guard with Benny, Chris and Brown(?) at Forward with then Jesse(?) and Hima at the 5.

Question marks would likely need a portal replacement if they leave.

Your development guys are Patterson and Carey, with Carey probably the best shot to break into getting minutes but no real guarantees. Thus leaving one more open spot as a TBD that isn't part of what i would call a "core 10".

If Maliq gets stronger then I could see a 2 forward 3g lineup at times leveraging his ability to defend and run the court. Hima will need to come along this summer quite a bit.

All speculative but in this scenario it's probably a little tricky fitting in a guy like Moore unless one of Bell or JT is on board with their big year probably being as a junior.

Chris was more active later in the year on the defensive side of the ball and in just his energy and effort overall. That was a very positive step not unlike Benny playing better as well.

Maliq and Taylor don't need to announce their staying?

Maliq is more important, in my opinion.

Taylor still seems another year away.

Jesse is the most important, of course.

But I still think we need one more alpha forward, and a true shooting guard.

That is a super bold claim unless you have info no one else has heard
Take it for what its worth. Jesse is for sure gone. Judah also likely gone, but less of a slam dunk as Jesse for obvious reasons

I told you all the day after the season ended that Joe was headed to the portal

I dont think he is athletic enough to play the 3

That‘s an old school belief. Look at Cole, Buddy etc. They lifted weights.
Here’s USA basketball’s say on it with myth #3.

Great post. I'm happy Bell is coming back because, just like I said about Benny, at the very least we need competent depth. If he can contribute more than that then all the better. And if Autry wants him back, then I want him back.

Honestly, if the best case of Bell is that he's a 15-18 minute a game sharpshooter then that's not so bad. We can use one of those guys.

Sometimes we forget that many programs distribute their minutes much differently than SU has under JB. Not every team rolls four guys out for 35+ minutes a game. Under Autry there may be more minutes available to "specialists" so to speak.
