Desko discusses injury to FOGO Williams, looks at alternative options at X (DO)

Man, unless it's nothing, I'm holding him out against St. John's. If he is even a little sore, I'm sitting him until Hopkins. Even then if Vehar does well against St. John's, I'd consider seeing if we can get away with not playing Williams in the first quarter. The guy has been such a spark for the team.

I don't know if it was just me, but on TV, when he was holding his shoulder after he got hurt, it looked like that shoulder had a brace/wrap on it. Does he have a known / previous shoulder injury? The way he reacted it looked like me when my shoulder pops out of socket, from an old injury.

Not loving this situation at all. Get the feeling Desko is playing some possum here on the severity of the injury. The good news is with SU playing a down St. Johns team Williams will have two weeks off. Just hope were not talking a season long injury here.

Might just be the design of the uniforms you saw. When he was standing on the sidelines during the 4th qtr, I didn't see a sling, and he wasn't wrapped in ice. If he popped it out, he wouldn't have been jumping around with his teammates afterwards.

When it first happened wasn't he knocked down by the UVA guy? Some of the articles are making it sound like he just dropped like a stone once the whistle blew, but I dont remember it happening that way.

On the slo-mo replay, it did seem as if he was dropping before contact. Like something gave out when he was exerting pressure...

Ah that would make sense then. Watching it in person it did seem like something happened and then he got bowled over by the UVA guy. I was encouraged by the fact he didnt go to the locker room.

Yup - he was on the way to the ground without any contact at all.

on the replay (espn3) it shows Williams smileing and hitting Vehar #32 on the shoulder on the sidelines with his right Arm @ the 4:29 Mark of the replay

He was shown on the sideline late in the game on TV laughing it up with his teammates (looked to be his fellow FOGOs). There was zero indication that anything was wrong or that he was in pain or that he was down about being hurt.

We should be concerned if he doesn't play at all against St. John's.

Would be a big red flag for me if he doesnt at least take a few draws. With it being St. Johns the game shoudn't be in doubt by midway through the 2nd so if hes ok to play he probably wont have to play more then a quarter plus.

It could be my foggy memory but it felt like UVa was using a pole on him and basically conceding the loss. Williams was getting slashed and held without any calls from the officials in my opinion. He seemed a bit flustered by this and it felt a little shaky on some of the clears. I am wondering if other teams with implore this strategy in the future. Either way I agree with Desko that it was good to get some of the reps to Vehar. He looks to be better than Daddio already

They actually tried 3 different players at X. Ottenbreit was the LSM - he took about 45% of the FO's (winning 4).

Edit: Ottenbreit won 4 of 12

Faceoff specialist Ben Williams said he had a sharp pain in his arm after Sunday's injury but is fine now. He's 72% from the X this year.

72% is absolutely ridiculous. To go from pretty much under 50% to Williams dominating is such a wild swing. I feel like Im back watching Danny Brennan again ( the best Syracuse faceoff guy I ever saw).

Brennan was 60% over his career. His best season was 66.7% in 2008.

Chris Cercy was a little better than 66%. His best season was 71.1% in 2000.

:)

In a big game Give me Brennan all day, in 08 he was a beast. Your right about Cercy though man 71.1% thats insane. Hopefully Williams can keep it up, its great to sit back and watch him dominate.

Syracuse FOGO Ben Williams said he's 100% after feeling a stinging pain in his arm in the 4th quarter against Virginia.

Williams said he could have returned against UVA if needed. Not worried about the injury moving forward.

I saw it on TV too and thought the same thing.

Here is a picture showing the brace/wrap.

Syracuse lacrosse FOGO Ben Williams '100 percent' after suffering arm injury against Virginia (PS: Bailey)

Syracuse faceoff specialist Ben Williams is fully healthy after feeling a sharp pain in his arm during the fourth quarter of SU's 15-9 win over Virginia on Sunday, he said in an interview on Tuesday.

"I got a sharp pain down my arm, went and got it checked on the sideline and I could've gone back in," Williams said, "but we were up by however many goals so they thought it was a good time to give other guys some reps."

Williams' clean bill of health is crucial for the top-ranked Orange as he he has won 72.1 percent of his faceoffs through four games — second only nationally to Ohio State's Christopher May. Williams, a sophomore transfer from Holy Cross, has also won 36 of his last 44 draws and eclipsed 78 percent in three of the four contests.

Williams will look to continue his hot start when Syracuse travels to Kennesaw, Ga., to face St. John's on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Cobb County Lacrosse Classic.

Said Williams: "I'm 100 percent right now and I'll be ready to go this Saturday."

After the game ended, he ran out on the field with the rest of the team to swarm Wardwell.

If he had a serious injury, he wouldn't have been running anywhere.
He also reached up and patted Wardwell on the back with his right hand/arm. Didn't seem to cause any pain and he didn't seem to have any ROM problem based on casual observation.
