Buried in Nate Mink's article on Dungey.

"There is no limit on the number of concussions a player can suffer before being medically disqualified. Syracuse University sends a letter home if a player has missed time on two occasions because of concussions, explaining that a third concussion could end their career."

Either Nate got this wrong, or there has been a subtle but significant change in our policy, so it matches nearly every other policy of college programs.

I can assure you as fact that we had a 3 strikes and you're out policy last year...at least 2 players left the program because of it and were medically disqualified.

He buried the lede.

I'm not saying this is true here, but a lot of schools use Medical Disqualification when they can free up scholarships on players that might never play or are fringe players. College athletics are a very brutal business.

Yep, Harbaugh did the same to a lineman last year.

I noticed this to and re-read it 10x to make sure I was reading it right. And every time I re-read it I said, “huh? Either Mink is wrong or we’ve changed the policy”

Seriously, this paragraph was jumping off the page at me with flashing lights.

So 3 is the limit...until it's not?

:eek::confused::noidea:

If ED got another concussion, a big part of me would say to keep a talented player like that in the program. However, the human side of me would say that it's time to sit out of football.

Why? Do you know his concussion history before he got here? Why is it ok to let 1 guy play who's only had 1 concussion in Orange but might have suffered multiple unreported concussions in HS vs some guy who gets 3 concussions in Orange but never had one before college? Fact is we don't know what condition these kids brains are in when they get here. For all we know, Strickland might be more prone to CTE later in life than Dungey. Also there seems to be some evidence supporting the fact that it's not the big ones that get ya, it's the repetitive blows to the head day and day in out in practice that do the real damage. There should be no set policy period, at all, none, nada, zilch, zero. We need specialists to diagnose and give a prognosis, not family doctors, not blanket policies, but brain experts. That's who should make the decision.

Not sure I feel great about this, actually.

But based on what? They can't diagnose CTE, let alone the early stages of CTE, without opening up the melon. Repetitive brain damage may look like one thing to one person and a different thing to another. Especially since some of the early research indicated that the it was thousands of smaller impacts that do the most damage and not the three bell ringers. The brain isn't a lite brite and the only thing that they have is a concussion to diagnose with. When everything is a gray area, there still needs to be a standard to use as a reference point.

I do like the idea of accelerometers in helmets to help track damage, but again that's not perfect, and frankly I think a lot of powerful people (like the NFL) would rather the general public and players didn't see that information because it's probably worse than expected.

I said this and stated it's one of the reasons there should be no 3 strike type of policy. It's not the 3 big ones that are going to do the most damage, at least so it seems in early research. I feel like what we have going on is a bunch of keen jerk reactions to a very serious issue. The problem is that creating policies that really don't protect the athlete from overall damage in the long run don't do much good. You could have a player never suffer a major concussion and still get CTE from the daily pounding. It reminds me a little of the cholesterol issue, for decades people had high cholesterol but not enough research was available to doctors told us all to limit the amount we eat. Turns out that did absolutely nothing except make people's diets miserable since your body is responsible for making the bulk of cholesterol found in your blood. People feeling like 'something needs to be done' before proving whether it has a positive effect or not aren't really helping the situation.

But that is the NFL position - do nothing while we study it for the next 30 years. There has to be a common sense approach like limiting head to head contact in practice. The IVY League just eliminated tackling in practice.
