He saw the attention Katz received and now is trying something similar

Really don't see anything wrong with the article. He was pretty up front with the situation and certainly expressed the thought he asked the question at the wrong time and appreciated JB apologizing. Also, if he was a real tool, he would never have talked to JB after the presser.

I think the fact he used the phrase, "dressed to the nines", made him a more interesting writer than plenty that I've seen

Actually it sounds like a writer who with all the stuff that went on last year, realizes he made a mistake, and is making a backhanded apology.
