A. Title Tracker 35% National Titles since 1936 with significant more weight given to titles since 1998 which was the formation of the BCS.
B. Head Coach 10% Tenure of Head Coaches winning percentage
C. Strength of Schedule 5% Average SOS for basketball since 1998 and Average SOS for Football since 2003.

Off the Field Success counted for 20%
D. Academics 10% 2013 US News and Report Ranking and 2012-2013 APR.
E. Recruiting 10% Total ESPN 150 Football Recruits and ESPN 100 Basketball Signees since 2007

Traditions of Success 30%
. Player success 10% NFL/NBA draft picks since 1999 weighed by round and alltime Naismith/Heisman winners
G. Stadium Advantage 10% Game Day experience, Home winning percentage, difference between home and road winning percentage since 1998.
H. Football/Basketball revenue 10% 2011 figures per U.S. Dept. of Education

Also, each school was given a grade for NCAA violations that have occurred since 1998 and were graded by severity of the sanctions.

No surprise at the top--Florida, OSU and Texas are probably in the top 5 of richest athletics programs. If I remember correctly, Texas puts the most into their programs, followed by OSU. I'm sure Florida is right there, too. If ESPN were somehow to put Olympic sports into the formula, Stanford and ND would jump right up there, but the top 3 would still be at or near the top.

With all the basketball success, it's surprising Connecticut is not on this list or 21-30. And Penn State is conspicuously absent. That's probably due to the sanctions, but they had football success before them.

Penn State was 42nd because of bad basketball, other schools of interest Clemson was 32nd, NC State 35th, Georgia Tech 38th, Virginia Tech 40th, West Virginia 41st, Connecticut 43rd, Virginia 49th, Wake Forest 56th, Boston College 59th, Rutgers 69th.

of the 7 ACC teams in the top 20 - 4 of them are former big east schools (counting ND in both those #s)

no wonder the ACC took advantage of BE incompetence and started raiding - they were screwed without the BE schools

I'm guessing with better football since 98, Syracuse would've jumped all the ACC teams ahead of them. ND seems high to me, but with off field and traditions combining for 50%, they got a big advantage.

For the record the difference between Florida and Ohio State comes down to the 2007 NCAA Championship Basketball game that Florida won over Ohio State. If Ohio State won that game Ohio State is number 1 and Florida is number is 2. Also, what hurt Florida in the rankings was losing Urban Meyer for Will Muschamp.
Syracuse Basketball was 7th and Football was 48th. What hurt SU the most was the GRob ERA and not signing one top 150 football recruit.
Duke is 14th because their basketball was number 1. USC was 22nd and they had the number 1 ranked football team.
