Happy National Potato Chip Day! March 14 is a day to grab a bag of your favorite chips and chow down, but it's a day that probably wouldn't even exist had it not been for a 19th century chef in Upstate New York.

The legendary snack food was invented by a man named George Speck, better known by the name George Crum, who cooked at the Moons Lake House in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Legend has it that in 1853 a wealthy customer ordered a house specialty of fried potatoes, but kept sending them back because they were too thick and soggy, even though that was the traditional way to make them.

UD Lands a 7-Seed in NCAA, Plays Syracuse (wdtn.com)
The University of Dayton will play Syracuse in the Midwest Region in St. Louis.
The 7th seeded Flyers will play the #10 Orange Friday in the NCAA Tournament. The time of that game will be determined later.
Michigan is in. The Wolverines are going to the First Four to play Tulsa, with Notre Dame then waiting for the winner in Brooklyn.
Remember Florida Gulf Coast? The Eagles made a surprising run to the Sweet Sixteen in 2013 with then-coach Andy Enfield. They were Dunk City back then. FGCU won the Atlantic Sun again and will be in the First Four against Fairleigh Dickinson. The winner plays top seed North Carolina in the East.
It would be a better bowl game, but Texas and Texas A&M are lined up to meet in the second round of the West Region in Oklahoma City. The former Big 12 rivals broke off their regular meetings in football and basketball when the Aggies left for the Southeastern Conference four years ago. The divorce was messy with plenty of lingering animosity.

Kevin Willard Says ACC and B1G Will be 'Tourists' in NYC (nj.com; Duggan)
After winning a throwback Big East Tournament championship game against Villanova on Saturday night, Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard protected his conference's turf.
Asked to put the game, which was played in front of a raucous sold-out crowd at Madison Square Garden, in perspective, Willard took a jab at other conferences that plan to bring their tournaments to New York in the future.
The ACC Tournament will be played at the Barclays Center in 2017 and 2018, whilethe Big Ten Tournament will take place at Madison Square Garden in 2018.
"I'm going to get in trouble for saying this, but I don't care: You know, everyone always asks questions about, is this tournament in trouble?" Willard said after the Pirates' 69-67 win over Villanova. "The ACC and the Big Ten, they want to come in to New York. The Big East — this is the home. We are the home. We will always be the home. They are going to be tourists. I've said it before. They're going to come in. They're going to get a slice of pizza. Hopefully a bacon, egg and cheese and a coffee, and then they're going to leave. But at the end of the day, the Big East will still be here. It's a basketball conference."

1. Which bubble team has the best case to be included in the NCAA tournament field? Which team should worry the most?
Andy Katz: Wichita State. No bad losses when healthy and a champion of a respected league. Monmouth should sweat. Too many losses to teams not in the field.
Dana O'Neil: To me, Michigan has the best case. The Wolverines have four wins against teams in the RPI top 25 and no bad losses. As for the team that should worry the most, I'd say Syracuse. The Orange's losses to Georgetown and St. John's, plus the quick exit from the ACC Tournament will make for a hard sell to the committee.
Myron Medcalf: I think Monmouth deserves serious consideration for a berth. Wins over USC, Notre Dame and UCLA. Plus, King Rice's squad bullied its league with the exception of that 1-2 record against rival Iona. Monmouth should get in. But Michigan should worry. Wins over Texas, Maryland, Purdue and Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament don't seem sufficient enough to offset the team's struggles throughout the season, although the Wolverines don't have a bad loss.
2. If you were on the committee, would you take into account the games Jim Boeheim missed with suspension when considering Syracuse?
Katz: Yes. Syracuse was a different team without him. But it shouldn't be the deciding factor since the Orange struggled down the stretch.
O'Neil: Frankly, I think it's a moot point. It's not like Syracuse was undefeated or stellar with him as the coach, and if the Orange don't make the tournament it will because of their basketball resume, not the presence or absence of their head coach.

800 Pound Rock Falls and Kills 12 Years Old Boy Admiring Falls in Adirondacks (PS; O'Toole)
A 12-year-old boy and his uncle hiking in the Adirondacks were admiring the Roaring Brook Falls Sunday afternoon when a large rock fell and struck them, Essex County Coroner Frank Whitelaw said.
The boy died and his uncle was injured after the approximately 800- to 900-pound rock dislodged and plummeted from 25- to 30-feet above, Whitelaw said.
"It was a freak accident," Whitelaw said.
The boy and his uncle had just hiked a quarter-mile to the base of Roaring Brook Falls. They had their backs to a "rock slide" as they stood on a small pile of rocks and faced the falls, Whitelaw said.
The rock struck the boy in the back and crushed him against a downed tree, Whitelaw said. Forest rangers and Keene Valley's rescue squad performed CPR on the boy for about 45 minutes. Whitelaw then pronounced the boy dead.
The boy's uncle had cuts to his face, hands and legs, and was treated at the scene. Although his injuries were minor, Whitelaw said the uncle "is in really rough shape emotionally. He is extremely distraught."
