As listed in Chases Annual Events, International Tuba Day was created to recognize tubists in musical organizations around the world who have to go through the hassle of handling a tuba. What hassles do tubists have? Tuba players obviously have hassles due to the size and weight of their instruments, but what is actually more of a hassle for tuba players is the prevalence of stereotyped attitudes among people towards tubists and their role in a musical organization.
Think for a minute: What does the tuba mean to you? Unfortunately, many non-tuba players think of the tuba as just being one of those big, loud instruments that go "oompah" in the back of parades - having no real importance and being easy to play - they're just there to look nice. As for tuba players, many people view them in the old stereotyped way: they have no real musical talent, no personality, just big, fat bodies with puffy cheeks and powerful lungs.

In Defense of Jonny Flynn (TNIAAM; Weinheimer)
Was Jonny Flynn an NBA Draft bust or was he simply a victim of misfortune?
With the NBA Playoffs in full swing and the Golden State Warriors cruising like they've been all season, the Minnesota Timberwolves' front office are constantly being reminded of and berated for drafting Jonny Flynn over Steph Curry with the 6th overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft (Curry went 7th). With Curry as the league's premiere scorer on a team that had the best regular season in NBA history and is trying to win a second NBA Championship, Flynn's reputation as a bust only grows.
Yes, Steph Curry has obviously panned out much better than Jonny Flynn in the NBA (and frankly, better than anyone could've ever dreamed of). Yes, Flynn is no longer in the league while Curry has the first of his many presumptive MVP awards under his belt. Hindsight is 20/20.

Zombie Triche Will Walk With Boeheim's Army (TNIAAM; Keeley)
Now we know why former Syracuse Orange star Brandon Triche always seems to be wearing a hat. Now that he's part zombie, the only way to take him out if to destroy his brain. You'll have to catch him first.
Triche is recovering from a torn ACL injury that cut short his time playing in Italy, the second ACL issue of his career. This time, however, he's healing thanks to a little help from "a cadaver graft of an Achilles tendon," which will allow him to be ready to play for Boeheim's Army in the upcoming TBT.
"He's perfect for us for so many reasons. Brandon Triche is someone who embodies what Syracuse basketball is all about," said Kevin Belbey, the general manager of Boeheim's Army. "He's hardworking. He's team first. He's a leader. He's a guy who grew up in Central New York. He's someone who bleeds orange through and through. He's one of the first people I thought of to be a part of this."
"I was kind of pissed I couldn't play last year. I was like, 'Man, I really want to play,'" Triche said. "There's a lot of exposure. It's on ESPN and there are a lot of high-level guys playing. The best part is you're playing with familiar guys. It's like you're back in college, only with older guys."

Perseverance Park Has a New Sculpture and it Needs a Name (PS; Tulloch)
In March, the city released the first concept images of the new Perseverance Park design, slated for completion by the end of 2017.
New York City-based designer Jerry van Eyck and London-based public artist Cecil Balmond lead the team of artists and landscape designerswhich created the new public space at Perseverance Park at the corner of Fayette and Salina streets. Previously, the area was the Common Center bus stop.
The Syracuse Urban Renewal Agency, which owns the park area, hired Eyck and Balmond to design the new space. SURA is an arm of city government headed by Mayor Stephanie Miner and staffed by city employees.
The city paid the team $288,000 to produce a schematic design. The total cost of the project is estimated to be about $3 million, according to SURA board minutes.
The park's design is based on several Syracuse-specific themes, especially salt and snow. The blueprint for the park mimics the way salt spreads out into waves and lines when certain frequencies pulse through it. The benches will rise like snow banks from the ground.
