Welcome to National Suspenders Day!

James Bond and Gordon Gekko wore them. Larry King was famous for his. What are they? On the “heels” of Wear Something Gaudy Day and Dress Like a Dork Day, October 20 is National Suspenders Day!

While the origins of this fashion-inspired holiday are unknown, the modern day suspenders were “Invented” in the 1820s by Albert Thurston. These once popular clothing accessories, sometimes referred to as braces, also served an important purpose.

Constructed from straps of fabric or leather, suspenders slip over the shoulders and attach to trousers with clips or buttons to keep trousers from falling down and to keep them in their proper place. While suspenders may not be the “in” thing today, suspenders can be worn by men, women and children.

In honor of National Suspenders Day, now is the perfect time to dust off the old suspenders and strap on a pair! And just in case you’ve been celebrating National Brandied Fruit Day a bit too much today, at least you won’t have to worry about your pants falling down!

Syracuse basketball can't keep wins, but it can keep Big East, NCAA banners (PS; Waters)

According to the NCAA, the Syracuse men's basketball team didn't win a single game in the 2005-06 season.

But Syracuse can still claim the 2006 Big East Tournament championship.

In its March 2015 report following a lengthy investigation, the NCAA's Committee on Infractions ordered Syracuse to vacate 101 wins. Those games took place in five different seasons.

On Monday, an NCAA official confirmed to Syracuse.com the adjusted win-loss record for Syracuse in each of those five seasons. The 101 vacated wins included every win in both the 2005-06 and 2011-12 seasons.

In vacating 101 wins in accordance with the NCAA's sanctions, Syracuse lost every win in two different seasons and a Big East Tournament title.

Those were special seasons for the Orange. Syracuse won the Big East Tournament championship in 2006 and advanced to the NCAA tournament's Elite 8 in 2012.

However, in a bizarre twist, the NCAA's sanctions did not include the removal of any trophies or banners.

That means while Syracuse's official record for the 2005-06 season will go down as 0-7, Syracuse can keep its Big East Tournament trophy and continue to display a Big East Tournament champion banner at the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center.

3 Syracuse men's basketball storylines to watch for at Orange Madness (DO; Grossman)

Syracuse is coming off a 23-14 (9-9 Atlantic Coast) season that saw the Orange get bounced in its first game of the ACC tournament and nearly miss the NCAA Tournament. SU earned a No. 10 seed but made it all the way to the Final Four before falling to North Carolina, 83-66.

SU lost its top three scorers from last year, but has three new highly anticipated players set to debut for the Orange this year.

Orange Madness in the Carrier Dome at 7 p.m. will provide a first look at this year’s team. Here are three storylines to watch for.

How big is Paschal Chukwu really?

Outside the fanfare of a 3-point competition and dunk contest, the biggest spectacle on the Carrier Dome floor Friday night is likely to be Syracuse’s newly eligible 7-foot-2 center. Chukwu transferred from Providence last year but redshirted due to NCAA transfer rules.

He spent the year practicing, polishing himself into the rim protector SU believes he can be. Chukwu’s expected to contribute in Syracuse’s 2-3 zone by now, and Friday offers him the chance to show the fans, if nothing else, he can defend from the interior of Jim Boeheim’s system.

It’s a problem the Orange faced at times last year. A problem that one of the tallest players in program history should be able to help alleviate, not to mention Dajuan Coleman is still returning as the expected starting center. Chukwu’s still got five inches on him, though.

Carmelo Anthony talks race, social activism in cover story for ESPN The Magazine (PS; Carlson)

Former Syracuse star Carmelo Anthony is coming off a gold medal victory, is climbing the list of professional basketball's all-time leading scorers and has a competent team around him for the first time in years.

But the story of Anthony's offseason this year, perhaps more than anything else, is his evolution into a role leading discussions on issues of race and social justice in the United States, particularly among sports fans and athletes.

It's that role, more than any on-court achievement, that landed Anthony on the cover of ESPN The Magazine's NBA preseason preview, doing a question-and-answer session with reporter Howard Bryant that is headlined "The Truth According to Carmelo Anthony."

— ESPN PR (@ESPNPR) October 18, 2016
In it, Anthony talks about how the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody sparked his action, the conversation he had with Colin Kaepernick following the quarterback's decision to kneel during the national anthem, as well as what it feels like to be called unpatriotic after winning the United State a gold medal.

Syracuse Basketball Player Previews: Tyus Battle (TNIAAM; Szuba)

After losing senior guard Trevor Cooney to graduation and planned-to-be shooting guard Malachi Richardson to the NBA, the off-guard position became wide open for the 2016-2017 season.

Battle will vie for the starting two guard position with graduate transfer Andrew White. It is possible for both players to start, but Battle and White will both spend time at the off-guard position.

Battle brings great athleticism to Syracuse that should translate to both ends of the floor. He has an innate ability to get to the basket and finish around the rim. Oh and he can dunk. Likereally well. Look out.

The challenge for Battle will be to knock down the occasional long ball. He can hit the mid-range with relative ease but he’s best suited attacking the rim. He’s likely to see over 20 minutes a game at the two. How much he plays beyond that will depend on how well he plays defense and Syracuse’s need for White at the forward.

Upstate NY fall colors: Some areas hit peak, but rain and wind diminish the show
(PS; Coin)

Peak fall colors are spreading across much of Upstate New York this week, but a couple of days of heavy rain will dampen the colors and knock down many of the leaves.

The regions approaching peak color include the Finger Lakes, Greater Niagara, Hudson Valley and Thousand Islands-Seaway, according to the weekly report of I Love NY.

Heavy rains are expected Thursday and Friday, with as much as 4 inches in a swath through Upstate. That could knock down many leaves that have reached their peak color, just as many were torn off trees when strong southwest windsblew through Upstate.

Here's what to expect this weekend:

Adirondacks: Leaves are past their peak colors in much of the region, including Indian Lake, Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Whiteface Mountain and Tupper Lake.

Capital-Saratoga: Fulton County spotters predict 100 percent color change, while Albany and Rensselaer counties are just past peak.

Chautauqua-Allegheny: Little Valley and Allegany State Park are at 60 to 70 percent, while Genesee, Niagara, Erie and Orleans counties are at about 40 to 50 percent.

Central New York: Madison and Broome counties will be at about 80 percent color change, and Oneida and Herkimer counties are at or just past peak.

Finger Lakes: Peak colors, with change of 75 to 85 percent, are expected throughout the region, including Watkins Glen, Ithaca, Geneseo and Corning.

Hudson Valley: Colors should be near 100 percent in Columbia and Orange counties, while Rockland County, including Bear Mountain State Park, will be closer to 85 percent.

Thousand Islands-Seaway: Spotters predict peak to past-peak colors, with 85 to 100 percent of leaves changing by the weekend. Top areas include Alexandria Bay and Oswego County.
