Welcome to Pay-a-Compliment Day!

Pay-a-Compliment Day is for giving "genuine and soulful compliments" to others. It was created by Adrienne Koopersmith, on February 6, 1995. On that cold February day, Koopersmith was riding the bus in Chicago, when she noticed someone who wasn't at a bus stop was frantically waving at the bus she was on, hoping that it would stop; the bus driver stopped and let the person on. When Koopersmith exited the bus, she complimented the driver on how nice it was that he had stopped. Koopersmith then went home and decided to make the holiday. Since she was warmed by the bus driver's actions, she wanted that warmth to be part of each February 6 for years to come.

Syracuse basketball defeats Louisville 78-73: Brent Axe recap (PS; Axe)

Sean McDonough opened the ESPN broadcast by noting that Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim said this is his worst offensive team in 42 years.

So how did the Syracuse University men's basketball team come to an offensive awakening on Monday night at the KFC Yum! Center after shooting 30 percent against Georgia Tech and scoring just 44 points against Virginia to go on to a 78-73 win over Louisville on Monday night?

There were two key reasons.

One was Syracuse outscored Virginia 20-9 in points off turnovers.

The Orange were especially deadly in this category in the first half, out-scoring Louisville 16-0 on turnovers.

It led to one of Syracuse's best displays in the first-half all season, scoring 39 points on the Cardinals. In its last three games, Syracuse's halftime totals were 22, 21 and 21. The Orange took the lead with 11:52 remaining in the first-half and held it for 30 minutes and 32 seconds.

The other change that allowed for an offensive flow, as noted by syracuse.com's Jason Murray, Syracuse let Oshae Brissett and Marek Dolezaj set the high ball screen instead of Paschal Chukwu. This small, but effective, change really opened up ball movement and allowed Tyus Battle and Frank Howard to attack in the paint and combine for 47 points on the night.

With their ‘backs against the wall’ after loss to Syracuse, Cards must keep fighting (courier-journal.com; Greer)

Two weeks ago, interim Louisville coach David Padgett was answering questions on national television about his surging team that was riding a four-game winning streak and sitting in second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

It feels like that was a year ago.

Since then, Louisville (16-8, 6-5 ACC) clattered back to Earth, losing four games in five and extending a losing streak to three after a 78-73 loss to a middling Syracuse team on Monday evening. And for the second time in six weeks, Louisville is facing a pivotal moment in its up-and-down season, another crucial test of will after a string of stumbles.

"It has to come from every single one of us, the will to fight and swing instead of just having our backs against the wall and stopping," senior center Anas Mahmoud said. "You can tell we have it in us. We were down 12 at some point (to Syracuse), and people were not giving up. It's just got to happen every single possession. You can't wait until you're down 12 points and then start trying to come back. You have to fight every single possession and fight every single day until the end of the season."

ACC Roundup - Syracuse Takes The ‘Ville (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

Good thing we don’t gamble because between the Super Bowl and Syracuse’s win over Louisville, we’d be broke.

We heard Philly had a number of players down with the flu which convinced us New England would win, and that Syracuse’s lack of depth and offensive weakness would not do well with Louisville’s defense and stable of big men.

Instead, Louisville lost its third in a row and Syracuse managed to shoot 47.2% and just six of those were threes so it’s not like the Orange just bombed away.

Syracuse still didn’t get a huge offensive game from its frontcourt - Oshae Brissett, Marek Dolezaj and Paschal Chukwu combined for 29 - but it was enough to help take some pressure off the backcourt.

One note in Louisville’s defense: Ray Spalding had to come off the bench after injuring his ankle against Florida State. He still had 18 points and nine boards in 28 minutes.

CNY's 75 all-time greatest high school basketball players, in order (PS; photo gallery; Weidner and Miller)

Nearly a year ago, we set out to compile a list of the best high school basketball players to ever come out of Central New York. We brainstormed with some of the top minds in the history of local hoops.

We enlisted the help of Hall of Fame coaches, athletic directors, players, sports writers and referees. We debated for months over who’s in, who’s out and where they rank.

The result is an impressive collection of the top 75 Section III players, in order.

What's the criteria to make this list? We considered high school performances, what the players did in college and, in many cases, pro basketball and beyond.

We know some will disagree over who we included or left off and where they’re ranked.

That's what makes this so fun. Let us know what you think in the comments section or email us at hssports@syracuse.com.

Syracuse University researchers use the Syracuse Center of Excellence to improve drone safety (DO; Strauss)

Sasi Prabhakaran stepped into a large, enclosed area outfitted with motion sensors and cameras down a small hallway on the first floor of the Syracuse Center of Excellence.

He placed a small, insect-like drone in the center of a cage and backed away.

The machine, almost mimicking a dragonfly, suddenly whizzed into the air, as eight cameras lining the top of the cage recorded its every movement.

The cameras’ data filtered back to Amit Sanyal — an associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, electrical engineering and computer science — and his Ph.D. students, who were raptly watching a computer screen.

“Here, they are building (on) the research side of the drone industry,” said Prabhakaran, who completed postdoctoral research at Syracuse University. He is currently the CEO of Akrobotix, a drone company.

Prabhakaran was referring to the Syracuse Center of Excellence, a research facility about a mile north of Main Campus. The center opened in October 2016 and is partially funded by New York state. It’s a futuristic-looking structure built on a remediated waste site near the tangle of Interstate 690 and Interstate 81 bridges adjacent to downtown.

I played with or against a dozen of the top 75, watched another 2 dozen.
I'm biased, playing with Craig Kowadla at Westhill, but there is no way he is only the #52nd best player from this area.
He belongs in the top 15 IMO.
He scored 1,966 points playing 3 quarters.
He was a machine.
