American Circus Day takes place on the anniversary of the first circus performance in America, which occurred on today's date in Philadelphia in 1793. The modern circus had been created just decades before, by Philip Astley in England. He had opened a horse riding school in London in 1768, where he taught during the day and performed riding tricks in the afternoon. His building had a circular arena called a circus, which was later known as a ring. Equestrian feats were the focus of early circuses, but in 1770, Astley added acrobats, jugglers, rope-dancers, and clowns to his show, to perform between the main horse-related acts.
British equestrian John Bill Ricketts came to America and debuted the circus in Philadelphia on April 3, 1793. The circus was held in a roofless arena that had 800 seats. George Washington attended one of its early performances, later that month.

Latest on the basketball recruitment of 6-foot-8, Class of 2018 forward Frankie Policelli (PS; Ditota)
Frankie Policelli's popularity with Division I basketball coaches continues.
Maryland is the latest to offer the 6-foot-8 New Hartford native with the left-handed shooting stroke. Before that, Illinois made an offer. So did Texas Tech. All told, Policelli, a Class of 2018 wing, has 20 college basketball offers.
"He keeps on getting new offers," his dad, Frank, said today by phone. "It's hard to settle on anything. Maryland is recent. Illinois is recent. If somebody comes up with an offer tomorrow, you have to explore it."

Policelli played this past season for Long Island Lutheran, which lost a controversial game to Archbishop Stepinac on March 24 after a clerical error penalized LuHi with a technical foul and awarded Stepinac late free throws that sealed its 76-72 win in the New York State Class AA Federation semifinals. LuHi, the No. 1 ranked team in Class AA, finished its season 22-3.
Policelli decided last summer to leave New Hartford for the better basketball and wider exposure of Long Island Lutheran. He took two official visits -- one to George Washington, the other to Stony Brook -- last fall and has three visits remaining. His dad said he likely would use all three of those official visits.

Syracuse basketball in G League playoffs: Richardson, White, Gillon, Southerland, more (PS; Ditota)
The G League playoffs continue tonight with single elimination games that culminate in a best-of-three finale beginning on April 8.
Survivors with Syracuse basketball roots that advanced past first-round games include Malachi Richardson, John Gillon, Andrew White, Chris McCullough and James Southerland. Syracuse native Tyler Cavanaugh was in action, too.
The schedule:
Monday, Richardson, recently acquired by the Toronto Raptors from the Sacramento Kings, plays for the Raptors 905 vs. the Westchester Knicks. That game starts at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on NBA TV. The 905 defeated the Grand Rapids Drive last Friday 92-88. Richardson scored 15 points in 17 minutes in that game. He was 6-for-11 overall and 3-for-6 from the 3-point line.

FRANK HOWARD

Our first player on the block is one of the most polarizing in Syracuse basketball history. Howard has a second home in the Jim Boeheim dog house. That’s exactly where he has resided over the last couple of season.
But that wasn’t the case in 2017-18. Howard tripled his scoring efforts, became THE man on campus as the point guard, and really provided this team with a steadying veteran presence. While the only reason this man didn’t receive an A grade, was because of the turnovers.
Howard had a ton of unforced turnovers this season that certainly cost the Orange in a few games. But on the other hand, his three point shooting and terrific passing helped the Cuse win a few that maybe they shouldn’t have.
The third year was clearly the charm for Howard in his Junior campaign. Now as the the Senior on the squad next season, it seems like Frankie will try to keep the momentum alive. He’ll likely return as the starting point guard if incoming freshman Jalen Carey doesn’t pry it from his dead fingers.

It always seems too early to launch a preseason poll in college basketball.
1. Kansas Jayhawks
Bill Self's squad should defend its Big 12 title streak and make another run in the NCAA tournament. He'll have more talent. Yeah, it sounds crazy, but Malik Newman -- if he returns -- will enter next season as a preseason All-American after his dominance of the NCAA tournament landscape. Lagerald Vick and Udoka Azubuike should also return, joining a top-10 recruiting class that features a pair of five-star guards: Devon Dotson and Quentin Grimes. Wait. There's more. Self will also add Memphis transfers K.J. Lawson (12.3 PPG, 8.1 RPG in 2016-17) and Dedric Lawson (19.2 PPG, 9.9 RPG, 2.1 BPG) and Cal transfer Charlie Moore (12.2 PPG, 1.1 SPG), who are all eligible to play next season. Oh, and Romeo Langford, a top-five recruit who is unsigned, could still pick the Jayhawks, too. That's a helluva talent pool for Self.

To stay here, the Orange would need Tyus Battle -- a projected late first-round pick on ESPN.com -- and Oshae Brissett to return. If that happens, Jim Boeheim will have the personnel to start next season the way last season ended with wins over Arizona State, TCU and Michigan State in the NCAA tournament. He gets Frank Howard back. Five-star prospect Darius Bazleychose to turn pro and enter the G League, but Boeheim is Boeheim. Syracuse will figure it out.

Definitely gone: Devonte’ Graham, Svi Mykhailiuk
Decision time: Malik Newman, Lagerald Vick, Udoka Azubuike
Why they’re here: For next year’s Jayhawks, it’s all about the newbies. They’re adding two five-star guards, Quentin Grimes and Devon Dodson, and four-star big man David McCormack. The thing KU fans probably are most excited for, though, are the transfers. The Jayhawks have three established college players ready to hit the ground running after a year of pushing the starters on the scout team.
Point guard Charlie Moore averaged 12.2 points and 3.5 assists as a freshman at Cal. Brothers Dedric and K.J. Lawson starred at Memphis, though their experiences with the hometown team were certainly tumultuous at times. Dedric, a 6-9 forward, averaged 19.2 points, 9.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.1 blocks for Memphis in 2016-17; K.J. checks in at 6-8 and averaged 12.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists.

Allegiant to offer nonstop flights from Syracuse to Nashville (PS; Moriarty)
Allegiant Air will offer nonstop service between Syracuse and Nashville, Tenn., twice weekly beginning June 14, the airline said Tuesday.
"We are excited to grow again at Syracuse Hancock International Airport, giving Upstate travelers a convenient, nonstop option to visit charming Music City," Lukas Johnson, Allegiant senior vice president of commercial, said in a statement. "We look forward to providing great low fares and friendly service to one of the southeast's most popular destinations."
The Las Vegas-based discount carrier said it will launch the service with promotional one-way base fares as low as $49, or $98 roundtrip. (Tickets must be purchased by tomorrow - Wednesday, April 4 - for travel by Aug. 13. The promotional fares are not available on all seats.)
The new seasonal service will operate Thursday and Sunday between Syracuse Hancock International Airport and Nashville International Airport. Allegiant spokesman Zach Kramer said the service will run through mid-August.
Flight times may vary and will be posted on the airline's website, Allegiant.com, he said.
With this addition, Allegiant will offer nonstop service to five destinations from Syracuse. The others are Myrtle Beach, S.C., and three destinations in Florida - Fort Lauderdale, Sanford (near Orlando) and St. Petersburg. It announced last month that it will begin offering twice weekly nonstop flights to Orlando Sanford International Airport on May 30.
