Welcome to Knife Day!

Knife Day is the day to appreciate the knives that folk use on a daily basis. This day is a celebration of this marvellous tool that has been with humans since the dawn of time. The evolution of knives has been a remarkable feat – from knives made of bone, stone and flint, to modern creations using titanium, bronze, iron and steel. Nobody can deny the knife is one of man’s most useful tools – for cooking, eating, fishing, hunting, and not to forget the oh so handy Swiss Army knife. To make the most of Knife Day, why not test your knife chopping skills in the kitchen, or buy that knife set you’ve always wanted. Invite family and friends over to compare and swap knives, or get together to clean and sharpen your knives. Then there’s nothing like having a cake and enjoying a slice by the knife. And instead of wishing one another to have a nice day, why not just say: “Have a knife day!”

History suggests Syracuse basketball's experience trumps more premium talent - The Juice Online (the juice; Dagostino)

Just last week, Duke took its preseason exhibition trip to Canada, showing off some impressive talent in the process. While the 3rd-ranked incoming freshman, Cam Reddish, sat out for the Blue Devils, coach Mike Krzyzewski was still able to run out the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked freshman in this year’s class in R.J. Barrett and Zion Williamson.

My in-depth, professional analysis of those two guys? Wow. I mean, like…really wow.

Williamson defies physics, with a 6-foot-7, 285-pound frame that can get off the floor at the free throw line and land under the basket having already dunked a ball through the hoop. Barrett is long and smooth. And both find that small piece of my heart that loves a fellow lefty.

Despite losing the likes of Marvin Bagley III, Wendell Carter Jr., Grayson Allen, Gary Trent Jr. and Trevor Duval from last year’s roster, Duke seems to be the favorite to be ranked No. 1 when college hoops season opens up. It’s the third straight season Duke has been atop the polls. They have been ranked in the Preseason Top 10 in each of the last 10 seasons. Duke won two championships (2010 and 2015) in that span.

Coach Krzyzewski has gone from a coach who developed stars over 2-3 years to embracing the one-and-done culture of college basketball and churning through a roster year after year…

Stop worrying that Syracuse basketball doesn’t have more 2019 recruits yet - The Juice Online (the juice; Irvine)

It’s that time in August when basketball recruiting news shifts from summer tournaments and evaluations to official visits and commitments. It’s also the time when Syracuse fans begin their perennial worryfest that the Orange doesn’t have enough verbal commitments for the following year’s freshman class.

Syracuse got an early start on the 2019 class. Four-star Brycen Goodine committed back on September 13, 2017. Goodine was so early he even beat two members of the 2018 class – Robert Braswell and Jalen Carey. But since then, it has been all quiet on the commitment front.

Is this normal? To provide context, I am reprising and updating an article I published back in 2016.

There are currently 131 days before the start of the calendar year in which the 2019 class will enroll at Syracuse. Since 2002, 49 percent of Syracuse’s commitments (including those that did not work out, such as Moustapha Diagne and Darius Bazley) have come later than this.

So, yes, it’s pretty normal.

Syracuse Basketball: Ranking the 2018-19 non-conference opponents (itlh.cmo; Patrick)

With the non-conference opponents for the Syracuse basketball 2018-19 season all announced, which of these teams will be Orange’s toughest matchup?

For the Syracuse basketball program, the non-conference schedule has normally been a time for the team to establish a winning mentality before they begin to go against tougher opponents from the ACC.

The Orange were 10-2 against non-conference teams last season. Much improved from their 8-5 record against opponents outside of their conference during the 2016-17 season.

This year, Syracuse has the chance to go unbeaten against non-conference teams for the first time since the 2013-14 season. A start like that for the Orange would certainly look impressive to the NCAA Tournament selection committee in March.

Of Syracuse’s 15 non-conference matchups this year, 12 will be played on the Orange’s home court inside the Carrier Dome and two will take place at a neutral site.

Syracuse is 24-4 at home against non-conference opponents in the last three seasons, so having the majority of this year’s non-conference schedule take place at the Carrier Dome should help the Orange get off to a good start.

As for which opponents outside of the ACC Syracuse will be facing in the 2018-19 season, each fall into a specific category of difficulty. Some matchups should be pretty easy, while others will test the true talent of the Orange’s current roster.

College Basketball: Which freshmen will make their mark on the ACC this season? – 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte (espncharlotte.net; Caruso)

It seems like college basketball is so far away but it is quickly sneaking up on all fans. The ACC had quite a few impactful freshmen last year and it shouldn’t be any different this season, as several new names will have an immediate on the conference.

Which freshmen will make their mark on the conference? Here are a few to watch out for.

Biggest impacts:

RJ Barrett – Duke
Forward/ 6’7/ 202 pounds

Barrett has already made his mark for the Blue Devils after their recent trip to Canada, in which he averaged over 30 points per game. Barrett is such an intriguing prospect with his size and versatility on the floor, as he can play several positions on the floor. Not only will he be difficult to slow down when attacking the rim, but he also displayed his ability to rebound, distribute and defend.

Zion Williamson – Duke
Forward/ 6’7/ 285 pounds

Fans will see Williamson repeatedly on Sportscenter this season with his athletic ability and power. Williamson will also play big in scoring and rebounding, on both ends, for the Blue Devils much like he displayed in Canada. Williamson will be a true paint scorer, as well as a versatile prospect that can defend inside and out. Coach K may also need him to be a big contributor on the boards, especially if the Blue Devils want to play small ball. Expect Williamson to average a double-double this season.

Nassir Little – North Carolina
Small Forward/ 6’6/ 220 pounds

Little comes in highly-regarded for his ability and motor on both ends of the floor, so much that NBA executives are already looking to peg him as a top draft pick. Little brings an intriguing ability of size, strength, energy, and scoring threat on the floor that it will be interesting to see how Roy Williams uses him on the court. He is an unselfish team player but knows how to contribute on the floor outside of just putting the ball in the basket. That is not to say that Little can’t score, as he can light up the boxscore along the outside as well as put the ball on the deck and score.

#OperationFunnelcake hashtag on Twitter

About 40 journalists from syracuse.com visited the New York State Fair on Opening Day with a mission: Eat and drink everything served up by more than 150 food vendors.

That's exactly what we did. This is the fifth consecutive year we embarked on what we call Operation Funnel Cake, sponsored this year by Northside Collision. We visited every food vendor at the fair in the opening hours. We then reviewed at least two items from each stand

Here's a look at us along the way via social media:
