Welcome to National Pumpkin Day!

National Pumpkin Day celebrates pumpkins, a cultivar of the squash plant that is native to North America. Its name is derived from the Greek word "pepon", which means large melon. Pumpkins have long since been associated with the harvest season, and both Halloweenand Thanksgiving. During Halloween many people pick or buy pumpkins—most often the Connecticut Field pumpkin—and carve them into jack-o'-lanterns. Vegetables such as turnips have long been carved in Ireland and Britain, and the practice of carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns stemmed from the story of Stingy Jack. Pumpkins were one of the squashes long eaten by Native Americans, which they introduced to Europeans shortly after the settlers arrived in the Americas. In fact, pumpkin pie was served at one of the Pilgrim's first Thanksgivings in the early 1620's, and is now a staple of Thanksgiving meals. A smaller strain of the Connecticut Field pumpkin, the Small Sugar pumpkin, is often used for pumpkin pie, but most Americans buy pie filling or puree in cans instead of getting it from fresh pumpkins. Although most Americans only use fresh pumpkins for carving, there has been a growing interest in pumpkin flavored foods in recent years, which can be attributed to Starbucks' introduction of pumpkin spice latte in 2003.

Freshman Buddy Boeheim post game interview

YOUNG GOLDEN KNIGHTS FALL IN EXHIBITION AT SYRACUSE - College of Saint Rose Athletics (gogoldenknights.com)

The College of Saint Rose hung in throughout what arguably will be its toughest test of the season with tonight's 80-49 setback in an exhibition at Syracuse. The host Orange entered the evening ranked #16 in the Associated Press Preseason Poll and returned all five starters from last year's "Sweet 16" squad.

Conversely, the Golden Knights entered the cavernous Carrier Dome with eight freshmen listed on their roster for interim head coach Mike Perno, who assumed the top seat on the bench after longtime mentor Brian Beaury retired earlier this month.

"I thought our guys competed really hard, which was our primary goal. We shared the ball really well, got a lot of good looks, and if we get those same shots going forward, we'll be in a good place," said Perno.

Senior guard Shane Herrity scored 10 points and senior forward Matt Cerutti finished with eight points and 12 rebounds to lead Saint Rose. Also, sophomore forward Jeff Allen tossed in nine points and freshman guard Tyler Washington scored seven.

For Syracuse, sophomore forward Oshae Brissett registered a double-double behind 22 points and 14 rebounds. Junior forward Elijah Hughes and sophomore forward Buddy Boeheim tossed in 19 apiece.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose officially opens its season on Saturday, November 10 vs. Georgian Court.

Doc's Morning Line: Good luck, Darius Bazley, you're going to need it. (cincinnati.com; Daugherty)

Darius Bazley doesn’t know what he wants to do, and he’s getting paid $1 million over three months to do it. I don’t quite understand that. But it’s a damned fine gig. Props to his agent, Rich Paul.

Maybe you recall Darius Bazley. He’s the basketball player from Princeton HS who last March blew off Syracuse, announcing he’d be playing in the NBA’s developmental G-League. He was the first high school player to do that. Only, he didn’t end up doing that. Not sure why.

He signed in May with Paul, who also represents LeBron James. Paul just got Bazley a job as an intern with New Balance shoes, which hasn’t marketed basketball shoes for more than 20 years, but is returning to the game.

As Paul explained to the AP, “He's able to learn a business that actually aligns with what he likes. He'll learn what goes into making a shoe. He'll learn about a storyboard; why they picked a certain athlete that they pick. And so – rollout plan, how to execute it."

Ah, well, OK.

I don’t know Darius Bazley. Never spoken to him. But really now. Does anyone believe he’s vitally interested in what goes into making a shoe? Is he going to wake up every morning eager to learn about a “storyboard’’?

Paul is cavalier about Bazley’s professional basketball career, which up to now amounts to zip. “He's going to train on the court, obviously find pickup games here and there,’’ said Paul. Paul also allowed that college is the “right thing’’ for most players:

"Because you need to learn how to play the game," Paul said. "And you need to learn how to mature as a man."

Evidently, Darius Bazley already owns those attributes. Either that or he thinks storyboarding is really cool.

“The challenge would be the actual play(ing) part,’’ Paul said.

Yeah. Could be.

ACC waiting on Madison Square Garden ... still (newsobserver.com; DeCock)

When the ACC tacked on two years to its tournament rotation last month, adding Washington in 2021 and Brooklyn in 2022 onto previously announced trips to Charlotte this March and Greensboro in 2020, the abbreviated nature of the extension was no accident.

The ACC, like the Big Ten, continues to covet Madison Square Garden and wants to maintain maximum flexibility going forward should an opportunity open to get into that arena.

“I think everybody in our league, around that table, feels like it’s important for our tournament to be in New York periodically,” ACC commissioner John Swofford said Wednesday. “It’s just a question of where.”

While the Big East’s contract with the Garden is believed to contain options for either side, the earliest another conference could potentially get into the Garden for a year, if at all, is probably 2024.

It's more fun to watch Juli in the background of the 2nd half of the video, interacting w/ various players.
