Welcome to Dinosaur Day!

Today we celebrate those large, extinct reptiles: dinosaurs. Scientists believe they first appeared about 245 million years ago, at the beginning of the Middle Triassic Epoch, and existed for about 180 million years, going extinct about 66 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous Period. The period when they lived is called the Mesozoic Era. During this time they went through many changes, and various species of dinosaurs replaced other species. Some dinosaurs were bipedal, meaning they walked on two legs, and some were quadrupedal, meaning they walked on all fours. Some switched back and forth. Some were covered with feathers, while others had what was almost like body armor. Some ran fast, and others were slow; most were herbivores, but some were carnivores. There were at least 700 species of dinosaurs, and possibly more than 1,000.

Syracuse’s Recruitment of Kiyan Anthony is Picking Up Steam (orangefizz.net; Aitken)

Since he’s been in middle school, Syracuse has been the presumed destination for Kiyan Anthony. With his dad leading the Orange to the 2003 national title, that prediction makes a lot of sense. It’s exciting too, given he’s a consensus 4-star recruit and top-50 player in the class of 2025. However, it usually isn’t that simple in the modern age of college basketball.

There are lots of other schools trying to win over Anthony. Plus, there’s NIL money to consider. So far, he’s gotten offers from Memphis, with former NBA star Penny Hardaway leading the charge, plus Arizona State. Beyond schools with official offers, Kentucky, Indiana, Florida State, Auburn, and Tennessee have all demonstrated interest.

A lot has changed over the last week, however. Kiyan Anthony has played three games in the EYBL circuit, this time in Indianapolis. He’s impressed too, scoring 24 points per game. In the crowd was Adrian Autry and the Syracuse coaching staff. That’s a good sign, and an even better sign is what followed. Before the games, On3 gave SU a 45% chance at leading Anthony, which was still the highest, but not great. Now, On3 has upped its prediction to 90%.

Honestly, 90% might be a bit too high. Kiyan Anthony has called Mike Woodson, the head coach of Indiana, “my Godfather.” When talking about Florida State, he commented, “I feel like I’d take a second visit to them.” The chances are still great that Syracuse secured Anthony, but it’s not close to final yet.

One last bit of encouraging news is some attention from LeBron James. His son, Bryce, played in the same games as Kiyan last week. After watching the two play together, James posted a picture of the duo on Instagram with the words “Them ONES!!!”

Why Syracuse Basketball has made Solid Progress in the Transfer Portal

Former Syracuse basketball player could be first to play in NBA Finals in 44 years (PS; Herbert)
A former Syracuse basketball player is nearing a rare feat in Orange hoops history.

Oshae Brissett is a backup forward for the No. 1 Boston Celtics, who are heavily favored to beat the 6th-seeded Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals. If the Celtics win the ECF series, which starts Tuesday, then Brissett could be the first SU alum to play in the NBA Finals in — wait for it — 44 years.

Former Syracuse basketball player Marty Byrnes played one minute in Game 6 of the 1980 NBA Finals as his Los Angeles Lakers beat the Philadelphia 76ers for the NBA championship. Dion Waiters is the only ex-Orangeman since Byrnes to be part of a team’s roster in the NBA Finals, but Waiters did not see any action when his Los Angeles Lakers won the 2020 title.

Brissett could see even more playing time than Byrnes did, too, as he’s appeared in five of the Celtics’ 10 playoff games so far, averaging 3.2 minutes and 1.4 points during the postseason. Brissett was a bigger part of Boston’s rotation during the regular season, averaging 11.5 minutes over 55 games, and still makes appearances when All-Stars Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown need a break.

If the Celtics advance to the 2024 NBA Finals, Boston and Brissett will face either the Minnesota Timberwolves or the Dallas Mavericks. And if Brissett steps onto the court, he’ll be the first person out of Syracuse University to do so during the finals in 44 years.

Ryder Frost reacts to Syracuse basketball offer (247sports.com; McAllister)

Class of 2025 small forward Ryder Frost had quite the day on Monday. He picked up offers from Georgia Tech, Minnesota, NC State, Nebraska, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Syracuse. This after schools watched him over the weekend at UAA Session II for the Middlesex Magic. The first offer of the day came from Syracuse.

"Coach Engelstad reached out Sunday and said that he and coach Autry wanted to give me a call Monday," Frost said. "Coach Autry and I talked and he offered me on the call. So cool. Just crazy pumped. Doesn't feel real."

The reason Frost was so pumped and had such a positive reaction to the offer from the Orange?

"It's such a historic program," Frost said. "It's a basketball school and just an amazing opportunity for me as a player and person."

Listed at 6-6, 205 pounds, Frost is garnering attention for his high basketball IQ and elite shooting ability. Over the weekend, he had some monster performances including a 32 point outing with nine made three pointers and a 22 point performance with six made threes. That is what led to the flurry of offers.

Syracuse, for example, had not been in contact before this weekend and yet felt comfortable enough extending an offer right away after new assistant Dan Engelstad watched him play live. The next step for both sides is to get Frost on campus for a visit. Nothing has been scheduled yet but those discussions as to when have already begun.

"Yes would love to visit very soon," Frost said. "Hopefully after school ends and over the summer. Not 100% sure, but would love to see campus and meet the coaches and players."

Frost is currently rated a three star prospect and the 60th best small forward in the class, but could be due for a ratings bump with his recent strong play. Frost currently plays high school ball for Phillips Exeter in New Hampshire after previously playing for Beverly High School in Massachusetts.

Memorial Day weekend is within sight and, with it, the unofficial start of summer.

The arrival of warm weather means that the crowds of music lovers will once again be streaming into the Empower FCU Ampitheater at Lakeview as the venue’s concert season begins.

This week sees a doubleheader of shows, with Irish singer-songwriter Hozier taking the stage on Tuesday followed by Rock and Roll Music Hall of Famers Judas Priest on Wednesday.

If you like your rock music indoors, In This Moment performs at the Landmark Theatre on Friday night.

For a different musical sound all together, the Sterling Stage Folkfest features four days of folk, roots, and jamband music starting on Thursday.

The highlight of the holiday weekend is the CNY Memorial Day Watchfire at the New York State Fairgrounds on Sunday. Honor America’s heroes at the moving annual event.

Camillus Community Band​

The Camillus Community Band will be performing their final concert of the season in the West Genesee High School Auditorium at 7:30 pm on Monday. The band, under the direction of Andrew Perry, is comprised of roughly 70 residents of Camillus and West Genesee alumni. They perform a variety of wind ensemble focused music. This concert features guest soloist Edgar Tumajyan from the Syracuse Orchestra. Admission is free.

Hozier​

The summer concert schedule at the Empower FCU Amphitheater at Lakeview begins Tuesday with Hozier, an Irish singer-songwriter who mixes folk-rock with blues and soul. This is his first Syracuse performance. His hits include “Too Sweet” and “Take Me to Church.” Hozier recently released his third album and averages 58 million monthly listeners on Spotify. Tickets are sold out but you can try VividSeats, StubHub, TicketNetwork or SeatGeek for tickets.

Judas Priest​

English heavy metal band Judas Priest is the next act to take the stage at the Empower FCU Ampitheater at Lakeview. Their Wednesday concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Led by singer Rob Halford, the band has been performing for more than 50 years. The group was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022 and won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2010. Tickets can be purchased here.

Update: Temps forecast to hit 90 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday (PS; $; Stevenson)

Central New York is nearing summer with a hot week, with temperatures forecast to reach almost record breaking highs by mid-week.

Temperatures are expected to reach high 80 degrees Monday and Tuesday and get as high as 90 on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

The high forecast for Wednesday is near the record for that date of 92 degrees set in 1911. The average temperature for the day is 60.2 degrees.

On Monday, temperatures will rise well into the 80s areawide. With dew points in the upper 50s to low 60s, it will feel a little muggy, according to the weather service. Very warm temperatures will continue into Tuesday and Wednesday with isolated to scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening hours.

The weather service said high pressure will move off the east coast Tuesday night, causing a continued warming trend through Wednesday with southwesterly winds. Most locations should rise well into the 80s with a few locations close to 90 on Wednesday.

Last year, 2023, was the third-warmest year in Syracuse in at least 120 years.

Six of the 10 warmest years in Syracuse have now occurred since 2002, according to the Northeast Regional Climate Center, which aggregates data from the National Weather Service. Meteorologists say a warming planet is making it more likely that we will continue to break records.
