Iwo Jima Day marks the anniversary of the date in February 1945 when the Battle of Iwo Jima began, with the invasion of Iwo Jima island by the United States Armed Forces. The day is officially observed in Massachusetts and unofficially marked across the United States. Some of the bloodiest fighting of the Pacific Theater of World War II took place at Iwo Jima.
The Battle of Iwo Jima lasted five weeks, with the United States capturing the island at its conclusion. Although it was believed from the start that the United States would win, it was thought that the battle would last days, or maybe a week, but not five weeks. The United States had larger numbers of people and arms, as well as air supremacy, and Japan couldn't retreat or be reinforced. About 70,000 Marines fought in the battle, compared to 21,000 Japanese forces. What was not known by the United States at first was the extent that Japan had built up their defenses, consisting of fortifications in the mountains, camouflaged artillery, and underground tunnels.

4 Signs You WILL See at College Gameday (barstoolcuse.com; Barrett)
It’s been awhile but, we did it…College GameDay is coming back to the Dome and in a big way. I mean how could it not? We’re one of only two teams to beat the Blue Devils this season and the rivalry has been heating up in a big way ever since we kicked the Big East to the curb.
Make no mistake, GameDay is no joke. International celebrities Seth “Greenie” Greenberg and Duke sympathizer Jay Bilas will be on the scene with Dick Vitale in all his glory taking over the airwaves, sucking Zion off and coming in hot with his guttural trademark ,“DOOKIE!”. Also a certain former NCAA tourney MVP whose name rhymes with LaMello has been sitting on his ass for quite some time and may be in need of some publicity, so be on the look-out for that.
With all that aside, one of the staples of College GameDay are the signs brought by the fans. I expect our student body to bring the heat, so here’s some signs to look out for.

UPDATE: In front of Syracuse assistant Gerry McNamara, Tre Mitchell scored eight points, grabbed 11 rebounds, dished out six assists and blocked two shots in just 12 minutes of action. His limited minutes were due to his team blowing out their opponent 113-75. As the opposition played zone, Mitchell was utilized at the free throw line with the offense running through him, according to Woodstock head coach Tony Bergeron.
Syracuse basketball assistant coach Gerry McNamara is taking advantage of an off day on Monday by visiting a top 2019 recruiting target. Coach McNamara is at Woodstock Academy Monday to watch four star center target Tre Mitchell as the Woodstock Gold Prep squad faces Rise Academy for a 4 p.m. tip, according to a source. Woodstock is 32-1 on the season and is looking for their 33rd win in the game. McNamara is there to watch Mitchell perform and to show their recruitment of him is serious. Syracuse offered Mitchell nearly one week ago. In the most recent game prior to Monday night's, Mitchell scored 31 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in a 96-80 win.
Mitchell is rated No. 79 player in the 2019 class by the 247Sports Composite. He is the 20th best center as well. Mitchell stands at 6-foot-9 and weighs 235 pounds. He also holds offers from UConn, Notre Dame, Illinois, Iowa State, Louisville, Pittsburgh and Xavier, among others. The four star big is also considering reclassifying to the 2020 class.

Louisville Basketball: 3 reasons the Cards are a Sweet 16 team (bigredlouie.com; Bien-Amie)
Ignore the recent late game struggles of Louisville Basketball against Duke and Clemson. It will not derail a possible Sweet 16 run in the NCAA tournament.
Louisville basketball has surpassed expectations as they were predicted to finish 11th in the ACC according to league media. They are currently 18th in the country according to the AP poll and tied for 4th in the ACC. Many pundits predicted Louisville would be in the NIT but now Louisville could end up as far as the Sweet 16.
Looking towards postseason implication, Louisville can make a run towards the sweet 16. According to Joey “Brackets”, Louisville is projected to be a five seed in the Midwest bracket. Matchups are bound to change but as the bracket is currently constituted, that would match them up with Minnesota and then face the winner of Nevada versus Indiana or Oklahoma.
Louisville is currently sitting at 18-8 overall and 9-4 within the conference with impressive wins against North Carolina, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina State, who were all ranked. Louisville has competitive losses against legitimate National Championship contenders in Tennessee and Duke. They also took Marquette to overtime, who’s a top ten team in the nation.
Louisville Basketball has faced the 4th hardest schedule in the country with a strength of schedule percentage of .606. Only Penn State, Duke, and Kansas has faced a harder strength of schedule. This will bode well for them once they reach the NCAA tournament.
Louisville can make an appearance in the Sweet 16 for three legitimate reasons.
1. The strongest reason for a possible Sweet 16 berth is Chris Mack’s NCAA tournament history. At Xavier, Mack made the tournament eight times and led Xavier to the sweet 16 four times. He also made a trip to the Elite Eight in 2016-2017 season. He is almost guaranteed to achieve a victory when March Madness begins.

No. 3 UVa downs No. 20 Virginia Tech (roanoke.com; Doughty)
If Virginia’s basketball players hadn’t looked at the scoreboard on their way off the court Monday at halftime, the mood in their locker room would not have indicated the Cavaliers were winning.
Coach Tony Bennett was not happy.
“With what he said to us at halftime, it was hard to remember that we were ahead,” UVa guard Ty Jerome said. “He really gave it to us. We were fortunate to have the lead, the way we were playing.”
Third-ranked Virginia saw No. 20 Virginia Tech tie the score twice in the opening minutes of the second half and it was still a five-point game before Jerome hit a 3-pointer with 9:17 left.
That made it an eight-point margin and the Cavaliers led by as many as 11 down the stretch as Virginia eventually prevailed 64-58.
It was the second victory in three days for Virginia, coming off a 60-54 victory over Notre Dame on Saturday in Charlottesville. It was the second Monday in a row upon which UVa had beaten a ranked opponent on the road.

Clemson Basketball: Tiger face must-win situation against Florida State (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)
The Clemson basketball team faces a must-win situation at home in LittleJohn Tuesday night against the Florida State Seminoles.
After winning four-straight games, including an impressive win over a top-20 Virginia Tech team, the Clemson basketball team has fallen off and lost two in a row.
The Tigers pulled their conference record up to .500 and were looking to really break deep into the NCAA Tournament field. But, with two losses- one to a bad Miami team and one to a ranked Louisville team- on the road, they’re now facing what seemingly is a must-win situation.
Clemson basketball, in my opinion, just doesn’t have the non-conference resume to go 9-9 in the ACC and still make the NCAA Tournament.
I really believe the Tigers will need to go 10-8 in the ACC to lock up a tournament spot or, should they go 9-9, they will need to have a deep run in the ACC Tournament.
So, to go 10-8, Clemson has to go 5-1 in the final six games.
That would be nearly impossible to do without a win over Florida State at home Tuesday night. Here’s a look at the Tigers’ last six conference games.
- vs. #17 Florida State
- vs. Boston College
- @ Pittsburgh
- vs. #8 UNC
- @ Notre Dame
- vs. Syracuse
You’ve got to find a way to go 2-1 in the three questionable games (Florida State, UNC and Syracuse).

NC State sees easier matchups
All season long NC State has rebounded phenomenally well for a team that plays four guards. But Saturday at Duke the Wolfpack got thrashed on the glass, rebounding just 5-35 misses for 14 percent. State lost the battle at the other end as well, ultimately allowing Duke 17 second chance points. Coach Kevin Keatts summed it up this way: “We’ve done a better job in most games of getting offensive rebounds,” Keatts said, “And then we didn’t have it (against Duke). We didn’t get the offensive rebounds. We typically get about 12 of those a game and we didn’t get those. On the other end we gave up 14, which is certainly not a good formula to win.”
With Wyatt Walker picking up three fouls in just eight minutes of court time and DJ Funderburk fouling out in less than 17 minutes of play, State spent 15 minutes against Duke with five guards on the floor. But Keatts wouldn’t use that as an excuse. “I thought we competed,” the coach said. “I thought we lost some of the toughness plays. We’ve got to get a little tougher because we’re not the biggest team. I thought we got beat up on the glass and in the paint.”
NC State shot 50 percent Saturday and that is going to win a lot of games. But Duke really limited the Wolfpack’s three-point opportunities, holding the Pack to just 6-19. State got to the free throw line just 11 times – a season long problem. Also, the Pack committed 12 turnovers, and more importantly those led to 22 Duke points.

Zion Mania Jumps The Pond (DBR; King)
Didn’t see this coming: Zion mania has reached Great Britain.
The Daily Express of London has this piece up and in classic British fashion - nothing personal, we love the UK, but the British press habitually mangles stories about college basketball in the US - gets it somewhat wrong.
They quote Zion OMG Williamson as saying this as NBA stars, like everyone else, marvel:
“Why they talking about me? I’m in college!
“I guess it’s dope. Those are two of the best players in the league. I’m hoping to be there competing against them next year.
“I mean it’s definitely an honour to hear [LeBron James] thinks I’m a decent player.
“At the same time, hopefully I’ll be competing against him next year, so I can’t really be too star struck.
“Because at the same time, if I’m competing against him, I’m trying to win.”
The Express characterized this as a warning, which it’s clearly not. It’s an earnest statement of respect and a declaration of effort.
As we say though the Brits periodically get things muddled when it comes to college basketball. A couple of years ago someone wrote about “the University of Duke.” Maybe Williamson will finally put it on the map.

One of the greatest rivalries in sports renews on Wednesday night as North Carolina travels to Duke. Cam Johnson leads a Tar Heel team long on experience with fellow seniors Luke Maye and Kenny Williams. The Tar Heels have also received major contributions from superstar freshmen Coby White and Nassir Little. It will be a tough task as Duke has four dynamic freshmen who have been unflappable thus far. Zion Williamson, R.J. Barrett, Cam Reddish and Tre Jones have stood up to the highest levels of competition and will be looking forward to this marquee matchup. Duke's Javin DeLaurier and Jack White, along with North Carolina's Luke Maye, Kenny Williams and Cam Johnson get you ready for the big game!

Inaugural season for Redhouse Arts Center director Hunter Foster includes ‘Rent,’ ‘Romeo & Juliet’ and ‘Fences’ (PS; Walrath)
With Broadway-credited artistic director Hunter Foster at the helm, the Redhouse Arts Center plans to take on the theme of family in 2019-2020 season, exploring how its different iterations inform the American and human experience.
The season includes a number of names even causal theater-goes will recognize, as it opens with Jonathan Larson’s “Rent," followed by “God of Carnage” by Yasmina Reza, the premiere of “A Syracuse Christmas Carol” by LJ Flecho and Michael O’Flaherty, Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” “Fences” by August Wilson and closing with Alison Bechdel’s “Fun Home.”
The theme of family was chosen not only to keep the variety of shows cohesive, said Executive Director Samara Hannah, but also to engage the Syracuse community in a way that represents Redhouse’s goals.
“A part of what I think we’re trying to demonstrate to people is, you know, theater isn’t what you thought it was 20 years ago or 30 years ago. What it is today is just a family place,” said Hannah. Though not all shows in the season are friendly for the entire family, they all explore the theme in a different ways, says Foster.
