Welcome to National Doughnut Day!

National Doughnut Day started in 1938[1] as a fund raiser for Chicago's The Salvation Army. Their goal was to help those in need during the Great Depression, and to honor The Salvation Army "Lassies" of World War I, who served doughnuts to soldiers.

Soon after the US entrance into World War I in 1917, The Salvation Army sent a fact-finding mission to France. The mission concluded that the needs of US enlisted men could be met by canteens/social centers termed "huts" that could serve baked goods, provide writing supplies and stamps, and provide a clothes-mending service. Typically, six staff members per hut would include four female volunteers who could "mother" the boys. These huts were established by The Salvation Army in the United States near army training centers.

About 250 Salvation Army volunteers went to France. Because of the difficulties of providing freshly baked goods from huts established in abandoned buildings near to the front lines, the two Salvation Army volunteers (Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance) came up with the idea of providing doughnuts. These are reported to have been an "instant hit", and "soon many soldiers were visiting The Salvation Army huts". Margaret Sheldon wrote of one busy day: "Today I made 22 pies, 300 doughnuts, 700 cups of coffee."

MM 6.5: Top Maryland men’s basketball target commits to Syracuse (testudotimes.com; Brown)

Maryland men’s basketball lost a key recruiting battle Thursday as 2021 four-star small forward Benny Williams announced his commitment to Syracuse.

The Terps had been recruiting Williams hard, but ultimately fell short to the Orange alongside Georgetown and Miami in the final four.

Williams was ranked was the No. 1 player in Maryland, No. 10 small forward and No. 47 overall player in the 2021 class, according to the 24/7 Sports Composite.

Mark Turgeon and his staff are preparing for a large haul in the 2021 class, casting a wide net in recruiting for players all across the floor. The Terps have extended offers to 33 players already in this cycle, along with 12 at the small forward position.

The Terps picked up their first commitment in the class with four-star power forward Julian Reese — brother of incoming women’s basketball recruit Angel Reese — joining the fold in May. The St. Frances Academy product has Maryland ranked as the No. 30 class in the nation.

4-star 2021 SF Benny Williams picks Syracuse over Terps, Hoyas (nbcsports.com; Cadeaux)

The Syracuse men's basketball program picked up its first commit of the 2021 class on Thursday and it came at the expense of the two big local schools.

Four-star prospect Benny Williams committed to the Orange on Thursday, the small forward announced on Twitter. 247Sports was the first to break the news.

I’m committed to...

— Benny Williams (@_bennywilliams) June 4, 2020

Williams, a consensus top 60 recruit in the 2021 class, chose Syracuse over Maryland, Georgetown and Miami. The small forward is ranked the 47th overall player in the 2021 class by 247Sports and 53rd by ESPN.

Missing on Williams is a crushing blow for the Terps, as the forward would have been the second four-star to commit to Maryland in the 2021 class, joining power forward Julian Reese. The Hoyas have yet to land a commitment for the 2021 recruiting cycle.

"I'm excited to play for coach [Jim] Boeheim in front of the best fans in the country in the greatest arena in college basketball," Williams said in his commitment video.

The 6-foot-8 forward, who plays his high school ball at St. Andrew's Episcopal in Potomac, Md., had taken two unofficial visits to Syracuse prior to committing, according to 247Sports.

Elijah Hughes became the go-to guy for the Syracuse Orange during the 2019-20 basketball season. The 6'6" forward led the ACC in scoring with 19 points per game and finished second on the team in assists, with 109 on the season. Check out Hughes' NBA Draft Tape right here.

Early this week, Clemson basketball received significant news: after testing the NBA Draft waters, Aamir Simms will return for his senior season.

A 6-foot-8 forward/center, Simms has long been an important fixture of Clemson basketball; however, he took his performance to a new level as a junior. During the 2019-20 season, Simms averaged 13 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. For his efforts, Simms was named a third-team All-ACC.

Aamir Simms retweeted this so safe to say he will be back.Only player in school history to lead team in scoring, reb and assists in same year.RT @JonRothstein: Clemson's Aamir Simms tells me that he is withdrawing from the 2020 NBA Draft.

— Tim Bourret (@TimBourret) June 1, 2020

Simms did more than just rebound and score, though. As the fulcrum of Clemson’s half-court offense, Simms morphed into one of the toughest covers in the ACC. The Tigers played small, for the most part; Simms was surrounded by four other shooters or secondary play-makers. (Tevin Mack fit in pretty well as a small-ball 4.)
