Syracuse Basketball: In-depth recruiting analysis on new 4-star target Shon Abaev (itlh; Adler)
On Monday evening, Syracuse basketball offered a scholarship to 2025 four-star wing and consensus top-60 national prospect Shon Abaev from Florida, he disclosed via his X page.
The talented 6-foot-8 shooting guard/small forward had a tremendous junior season during the 2023-24 campaign and is off to a fast start this spring on the AAU circuit, according to national analysts and scouts.
Abaev is a standout for the Calvary Christian Academy in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In grassroots basketball, this spring and summer, he is suiting up for the Pembroke Pines, Fla.-based SOH Elite in the Under Armour Association ("UAA") league.
To date, per 247Sports, Abaev has picked up around 20 scholarship offers from a range of high-major programs.
New Syracuse basketball 2025 four-star recruit Shon Abaev is a highly sought-after prospect.
Abaev's full offer sheet, according to recruiting Web sites, includes schools such as Oregon, Tennessee, Arizona State, Auburn, Creighton, Dayton, Florida, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Kansas, LSU, St. John's, Southern California, UCF and USF, among others.He has taken official visits to both Oregon and Tennessee, per media reports and recruiting services. I'll be curious to see if Abaev ends up going on a visit to the Hill at some point in the future.
As a junior, per MaxPreps, Abaev averaged 18.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.8 steals per game, while connecting on 43 percent from the field, 33 percent from beyond the arc, and 76 percent from the free-throw line.

Syracuse basketball coaches, recently, have doled out scholarship offers to several high school prospects in the 2025 class.
In total, according to media reports and recruiting services, the Orange staff has offered more than 20 players in the high school junior cycle, however, some of those offers were made a while back.
While it's a little bit later in the game for 2025 prospects to be receiving a sizable number of offers at this stage in their respective recruitments, I think it's important to note some context here.
For one, Adrian Autry in March wrapped up his first year as the team's head coach. Also, not too long ago, former Syracuse basketball star and associate head coach Gerry McNamara departed the Hill to lead Siena in his first head-coaching gig.
To help fill the void left by GMac moving on, SU Athletics recently hired former Mount St. Mary's head coach Dan Engelstad as the Orange's third assistant coach. Based on these developments and perhaps other factors, it's not a huge surprise to see the 'Cuse staff evolve its 2025 recruiting focus and hand out some new offers.
Here are some of the new Syracuse basketball recruits in the 2025 class.
This list below may not be entirely exhaustive, but lately, the Orange has offered at least four "new" prospects in the 2025 cycle. They are:Acaden Lewis
The 6-foot-3 Lewis, a four-star guard, helped guide the Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., to a pair of titles in the 2023-24 season as well as a top-20 national ranking.
In grassroots basketball, he is off to a hot start while competing for the 17U squad of the Oxon Hill, Md.-based Team Durant in Nike’s EYBL league.
Lewis, who is highly interested in visiting the Orange, picked up numerous awards and accolades for his stellar junior season at Sidwell Friends. The top-70 national prospect's offer list includes West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Villanova, Florida State, Georgetown, Virginia, Brown, Bryant, George Mason, George Washington, Georgia, Howard, Nebraska, Oregon, Penn State, Providence, St. John's, Vanderbilt, Norfolk State and UMBC.

Dante Allen
The 6-foot-4 Allen is a top-100 national prospect in the 2025 class. As a junior, he won a state championship while starring for the Riviera Preparatory School in Miami.
On the AAU circuit, the four-star player is a standout with 17U team of the Miami-based Nightrydas Elite in Nike’s EYBL league. At the time of this writing, Allen was ranked as high as No. 69 nationally by ESPN.
Allen's offer sheet also includes squads such as Michigan, Villanova, Memphis, Miami, Florida Gulf Coast, UCF, LSU, Illinois, Creighton and Georgetown.

Syracuse men’s basketball: reports indicate a new portal candidate emerges for the Orange (TNIAAM; Wall)
With the Syracuse Orange missing out on guard Dakota Leffew over the weekend, we haven’t heard much about Adrian Autry connecting with any other potential transfers despite having three open scholarships.
There is a report from this Minnesota website which has connected the Orange with Jackson State guard Ken Evans, Jr. The 6’4” guard was the 23-24 SWAC Player of the Year after averaging 18.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. Evans shot 40.8% from the field, 39.2% from 3, and he’d have two more seasons of eligibility remaining.
Evans is reportedly drawing interest from schools including St. John’s, Louisville and Ole Miss, but his recruiting has been under the radar compared to other transfers. It’s possible that as other guards find homes, this will change but so far the report and a social media post from incoming Syracuse Eddie Lampkin are the clues that something could be brewing here.
I still think the Orange need another scorer on next year’s squad and Evans would fit that bill. He brings a lot of offensive upside, but would he and JJ Starling be able to defend well enough to share the backcourt, or is Evans open to a role as a 2nd unit scorer?
Another late portal entry of note is Colgate point guard Braeden Smith. The Seattle native was the Patriot League Player of the Year last season after he averaged 12.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game. The 6’ point guard had 14 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists in the game against Syracuse last season and he’d give the Orange quite a duo at the point with Jaquan Carlos.

Syracuse Basketball has the Number-13 commit class in the country so far. Adrian Autry has brought in three transfers: Eddie Lampkin, Jyare Davis, and Jaquan Carlos. The Cuse also have two freshmen coming in: Five-Star Donnie Freeman - best recruit since Carmelo Anthony - and Four-Star Guard Elijah Moore.

A settlement is reportedly in the works for a massive antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA. Negotiations in House vs. NCAA could result in a revenue sharing model for the Power Four conference. According to reports from ESPN and Yahoo! Sports, each school in the Power Four would distribute 15-20 million dollars to their student athletes as part of the revenue sharing model for television deals. This situation would dramatically change the college sports landscape as we know it.

Head coach Adrian Autry didn't lead his team to the NCAA Tournament in his first season, but finishing 20-12 overall and 11-9 is not something to scoff at. Unfortunately, now Autry must deal with the highs and lows of the offseason, especially with losing his best player Judah Mintz to the NBA Draft who averaged 18.8 points per game and 4.8 assists.
Syracuse lost four other key pieces to the transfer portal, but Autry has done his best to replace those spots with three transfers from the portal so far. The Orange do have two starters returning which helps a lot, especially with three potential starters coming in from the portal. One of the biggest gets for Autry is big man Eddie Lampkin from Colorado who can add size to this Syracuse team.
It will probably have to be a good mix of veterans and players coming in from this year's recruiting class for Autry. It will be a puzzle and Autry will have to see which pieces fit together best for his team to succeed.

What Duke basketball fans can expect from Cameron Indoor Stadium upgrades (fayobserver.com; Baxley)
Cameron Indoor Stadium is getting an upgrade ahead of Duke basketball’s 2024-25 season.
Daktronics, along with EwingCole architecture, have partnered with Duke to provide and install a new videoboard to improve the game-day presentation with videos and statistics for Blue Devils fans next season.
Entering Jon Scheyer’s third season as head coach, the Blue Devils are projected to have a national-championship contender with returners Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster surrounded by a six-player recruiting class headlined by Cooper Flagg.
Duke also added a pair of players via the transfer portal in Syracuse transfer Maliq Brown and Purdue transfer Mason Gillis.
With Duke’s new three-display centerhung configuration hanging from the rafters at Cameron, fans throughout the gym will get to see replays of the action and live statistics with ease.
“For us to be a part of this project at such a historic venue as Cameron Indoor Stadium is an honor,” Corey Williams, Daktronics sales representative, said in a Duke-issued statement.
“To help enhance the game-day experience for the fans and work closely with our longtime partners at Duke makes this a very rewarding endeavor. We’re looking forward to seeing how the new centerhung adds to the already amazing atmosphere.”

Thunderstorms, flash flooding possible today in Upstate NY (PS; Coin)
A strong cold front sweeping into Upstate New York today could bring scattered thunderstorms, some with enough rain to cause limited flash flooding.
“Some of these storms have the potential of producing strong and gusty winds,” the National Weather Service said. “Heavy downpours could lead to local urban and small stream flood issues.”
A few thunderstorms have already started up; one brought pea-sized hail to Oneida County at about 6 a.m.
The storms will be strongest this afternoon and evening as the cold front crashes into the warmest, most humid part of the day. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid 70s, with some pockets of 80 degrees in the Southern Tier. Those will drop sharply into the 50s by sunset.
A cluster of storms is expected to fire up in the Southern Tier in midafternoon just ahead of the cold front. Those storms will move east and fade this evening as temperatures drop.
While rainfall totals aren’t expected to be much more than an inch, it could be intense enough to cause some flash flooding, especially in urban areas. The risk is higher in isolated areas that get hit repeatedly by a line of storms.
Wednesday and Thursday are likely to be dry and partly sunny. Rain sneaks back into the forecast on Saturday.
Upstate NY town triumphs: Listed among U.S. best 5K, half marathon, cultural scene, and more (PS; Hernandez)
One Upstate New York town seems to have it all, at least when it comes to some of America’s best road races, cultural events and a picturesque town square.
Corning, just south of the Finger Lakes, has been racking up awards in USA Today’s 10Best Reader’s Choice Awards series.
Known as the “Crystal City,” it is home to the glimmering Corning Museum of Glass with the most comprehensive collection of glass in the world, and the Gaffer District. This Southern Tier city was voted:
- One of the best 5ks
- One of the best half marathons
- One of the best small town cultural scenes
- One of the best public town squares
Both races are two in a full series over a fall weekend in Corning. The 5k takes place on the Saturday leading up to the longer half marathon and full marathon on a Sunday. There is also a Wineglass 8k that happens on Memorial Day weekend to kick off summer and annual GlassFest.
Runners and their adoring fans will want to stick around the area to take in award-winning Centerway Square, which ranked number 5 this year in best town squares. The brick-paved pedestrian plaza placed second in the 2023 contest.
The Gaffer District along the town’s main corridor is filled with artisan shops, family-owned restaurants like Toast & Grind or Hand + Foot, and one of a kind gift shops.
The city’s award-winning Centerway Walking Bridge doubles as a “suspended park” between the Gaffer District and the Corning Museum of Glass across the Chemung River. The glass museum offers more than 50,000 artifacts and installations.

Syracuse buildings to be lit green for Lyme disease awareness (PS; Alba)
Nearly a dozen buildings in Syracuse will be lit green Wednesday for Lyme disease awareness.
The Central New York area is an “epicenter of tick-borne disease” with a 439% jump between 2008 and 2018, according to the CNY Lyme & Tick-Borne Disease Alliance.
Educators at the alliance in May and for the rest of the year will be meeting with groups and organizations to teach about Lyme disease, treatment and prevention, the group said.
About 476,000 people are diagnosed with Lyme disease each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
