Welcome to Christmas Card Day!

Christmas cards, and the man who is credited with coming up with the concept for a commercial Christmas card, Sir Henry Cole, are celebrated today. Because he didn't have time to write all his family and friends at Christmas time, Cole, a worker at the Public Records Office in London, commissioned artist John Calcott Horsley to design a card for him, which Horsley did while living at Orestone Manor, near Torquay, in the United Kingdom. This first card, created in 1843, had a picture of a family celebrating Christmas together while drinking, flanked by images of people giving food and clothing to the needy. Below, the phrase "A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU" was inscribed. As the cards worked well for Cole, he had a thousand of them printed, which were sold for a shilling each, making them the first mass produced Christmas cards. In 2001, one of the original cards, which was signed by Cole himself, fetched over $30,000 at auction. It is believed that about a dozen of the original cards survive today. One of them can be viewed at the National Art Library inside of the Victoria and Albert Museum, a museum where Henry Cole was the first director.

Late Rutgers Rally Hands Syracuse its First Loss (SI; McAllister)

Rutgers used a 11-0 run late in the second half to push past Syracuse as the Orange lost their first game of the season to the 21st ranked Scarlet Knights 79-69 in Piscataway. Syracuse held a lead with 5:40 left to play when Rutgers made their surge, aided by poor shot selection by Syracuse.

Syracuse was up and down offensively all game, struggling to score for stretches and missing open looks from the outside. They were good attacking the basket, especially in the second half. That was what allowed them to make a run and take the lead. But they were scoreless for nearly four minutes after that and Rutgers took advantage.

The first half saw both teams struggle to shoot the ball. Rutgers got out to a double digit lead on a few occasions, but Syracuse continued to battle back. A Joe Girard three at the end of the first half, his lone made basket in the game, trimmed the lead to four entering halftime.

Five Takeaways from Syracuse's Loss at Rutgers (SI; McAllister)

1. Girard Continues to Struggle

Joe Girard has one solid shooting game out of four that Syracuse has played. He had another poor outing against Rutgers. He finished 1-8 from the floor and 1-6 from beyond the arc. To make matters worse, his defense was well below par. Rutgers routinely attacked Girard to initiate offense, and he could not stop penetration nor stay out on shooters. Allowing opponents to get inside while also allowing open perimeter shots is about as bad as it gets defensively. Head coach Jim Boeheim said as much after the game. Girard needs to figure things out. He is nowhere near the same kind of player he was last season. Yes he had defensive lapses last year, but not to this extent. And he provided much more offensively. If he is not careful, he is going to lose his starting job to Kadary Richmond with Buddy Boeheim returning.

2. Syracuse Missed Bourama

Syracuse missed both Buddy Boeheim and Bourama Sidibe in this one, but man did they REALLY miss Bourama. Rutgers outrebounded Syracuse 43-26, including 13 offensive rebounds. Rutgers centers Cliff Omoruyi and Myles Johnson, who are both 6-11 and north of 240 pounds dominated inside combining for 18 rebounds. Marek Dolezaj was overpowered and at an unfair advantage. Not having Sidibe really hurt Syracuse's ability to be competitive on the glass and provide rim protection when Rutgers' guards attacked the basket.

Embracing Expectations: 4 Thoughts on Syracuse (onthebanks.com; White)

Ending a 13 game losing streak to the Syracuse Orange, Rutgers stayed out of the loss column with a fun win, 79-69.

Ron Fire: Ron Harper Jr. was scalding hot for most of the game. He scored fifteen in the first half and then finished with 26. He was unconscious from 3 going 5 for 8. This is All Big Ten Ron Harper. The kind of player who can take a good team and make them great. If Geo Baker comes back healthy in time for the Big Ten season, we are in for a world of fun. And his buddy Montez Mathis kept up the pace scoring 19.

The Defense Misses the Crowd: When Syracuse tried to take over the game in the 2nd half, it’s because Rutgers defense went away—something that rarely happens under Steve Pikiell. This game definitely missed the juice that the RAC gives. Imagine a moment when Syracuse was trying to push, but the RAC was rocking? I wonder if that Orange run would have happened. Myles Johnson, however, fueled Rutgers defense down the stretch, basically deciding the Orange wouldn’t have free reign.

Rutgers comes up big late in win over Syracuse (nypost.com; Braziller)

Fans or no fans, the RAC is still a nightmare for visitors. Just ask Syracuse, which saw its momentum disintegrate into a one-sided loss in the quiet arena Tuesday night.

This game followed the script of many of Rutgers’ program-record 18 home wins of a year ago. Lockdown defense. A big late run. An opponent helpless as a winnable game dances out of reach in the final minutes. The only thing missing was the noise of a sold-out crowd.

It didn’t matter that there were no fans present or that star senior Geo Baker was sidelined with an ankle injury. Rutgers, ranked 21st, is still awfully difficult to beat in Piscataway and deep enough to withstand Baker’s absence for now. The Scarlet Knights ran away from Syracuse down the stretch for a 79-69 victory in the annual ACC-Big Ten challenge.

“We showed some really good toughness,” Rutgers coach Steve Pikiell said. “It took everybody doing everything, the little things. … We knew we’d be tested, and we were.”

Against its first power-conference opponent, Rutgers was struggling late in the second half. A double-digit lead was gone. Syracuse was up three on the strength of a 16-7 run.

Another meteor? More booms heard, fireballs spotted in Upstate NY (PS; $; House)

Did you hear a boom last night in Upstate New York? Did you see a streak of light cut across the night sky?

If so, you aren’t alone.

Witnesses from Virginia to New York to Quebec reported fireball sightings to the American Meteor Society on Monday night. One sighting came from Oswego County.

A video taken by a doorbell camera in the city of Oswego shows a flash of light in the night sky. The flash was followed by a loud, resounding boom. The video, taken at 9:21 p.m. near Miller Street, was provided by a witness and posted on the meteor society’s website.

The reports came less than a week after a meteor exploded over Central New York. The house-shaking, sonic boom sounded like an explosion, startling residents in Central New York and beyond.

Three of Monday night’s fireball reports came from Upstate New York. They were spaced about three hours apart, according to the society’s logs: 7:31 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and 9:20 p.m.

The biggest string of fireball reports happened at 7:31 p.m. The meteor society received 155 reports from witnesses — mostly in Ontario and Quebec — who saw a fireball in the sky, according to the meteor society’s logs. Witnesses in the Catskills and Albany area also reported spotting a fiery light in the sky.

An hour later, a second fireball event was reported to the meteor society. Most of the 28 witness reports were in Pennsylvania. But one fireball sighting was made southeast of Cortland, according to the society’s logs.

The fireball sighting in Oswego was the last submitted to the meteor society last night. So far, only one witness reported hearing a boom and seeing a flash of light.

The "average" ACC loss yesterday was by 11+ points. Syracuse lost by "only" 10.
(Yeah, that doesn't even sound convincing).

BTW, let me just get this out of the way: my Hokies have the dubious distinction of losing by the biggest margin of all - 20 points.
