Welcome to National Tortilla Chip Day!

Today we celebrate and eat tortilla chips, chips made from pieces of corn tortillas that are fried or baked until they are crispy. Usually made from white corn, they can be made from blue corn as well; blue corn chips may be a healthier option, with less starch and 20 percent more protein. They may be eaten alone, with many kinds of dips, or as the base of nachos.

Jose Martinez of San Antonio, Texas, is often credited as being their creator. He was the owner of the Tamalina Milling Company and came up with mass-produced masa, a type of corn flour used to make tortillas. He made tortilla chips with some excess masa. Another person credited with the creation of tortilla chips, or with at least bringing them into the public consciousness, is Rebecca Webb Carranza, former president of El Zarpape Tortilla Factory of Los Angeles. In the 1940s, she fried misshapen tortillas and served them at a family party, where they were a hit. She began marketing them to the public, and by the 1960s the company was selling them as "Tort Chips."

The next day: Syracuse shows true colors in blowout loss to Duke (DO; Dabbundo)

Syracuse delivered yet another lifeless performance this season on Monday night, the four-year anniversary of John Gillon’s buzzer-beater to beat Duke. Riding a three-game win streak heading into the game, it was the worst the Orange have looked since just two weeks prior, when SU was embarrassed in a 17-point road loss to Clemson. And two weeks before that, the slowest-paced offense in Division I, Virginia, picked apart the Orange’s zone for 81 points.

The blowout losses are piling up while the Orange have just one win against a team ranked inside the KenPom top 40 in the last two seasons. Not only do the 2020-21 Orange have a low ceiling, but the floor is in serious danger of collapsing in the final two regular season games. Its defense may have already reached the bottom Monday night.

Duke torched the Syracuse zone for 10 first-half 3s, a zone with an aura of deep NCAA Tournament runs that appears — like every other defensive scheme — to be dependent on personnel and effort.

Jim Boeheim said the forwards, not the guards, are at fault for the defense allowing 52 first-half points. But postgame, Buddy Boeheim said it was everyone’s fault — and he’s right. Syracuse didn’t just lose on Monday. They were embarrassed. ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi called the game between Syracuse and Duke — two teams with similar resumes that are on the outside looking in at the NCAA Tournament — a “play-out” game. Syracuse (13-7, 7-6 Atlantic Coast) needed the win, and instead, it delivered one of its worst halves of the season and never gave itself a chance in a 85-71 loss to Duke (11-8, 9-6) at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Syracuse Battling Pac-12, ACC for 2022 Guard (SI; McAllister)

Class of 2022 guard Quadir Copeland, originally from Pennsylvania but now at Life Center Academy in New Jersey, has seen his recruitment really ramp up over the last year to year and a half. He has picked up several offers as more programs become aware of his skill. In his junior season, Copeland is showing off some of that as his team adjusts to new pieces.

"We're an all new team," Copeland said. "So it's still going slow. Not real slow, but we're still getting to know each other and learn each other's game. I think right now we're 8-6. We're a high school and we're playing against all prep schools. Definitely no excuses, but we're still getting used to each other. Still learning. It's like a whole new team. But the season is good. I love all my teammates and we definitely have some good players. We just have to learn to put it all together.

"I'm averaging 17 points, I don't know my rebounding or anything but I'm definitely averaging like 17 points per game. I've been shooting it better than I was last year."

Syracuse basketball first-half defense is awful again in Duke blow-out (itlh; Adler)

After his team fell, 85-71, to a surging Duke squad on Monday night in Durham, N.C., snapping a three-affair success streak, head coach Jim Boeheim certainly wasn’t altogether happy with the defensive performance put forth by Syracuse basketball, particularly in the first half.

In the Orange’s last two Atlantic Coast Conference clashes, at home against Notre Dame and then on the road versus the Blue Devils, the ‘Cuse defense has allowed 46 points and 52 points, respectively, in the first half. That won’t do.

Yes, Syracuse basketball (13-7, 7-6) made an epic comeback last Saturday afternoon on the Hill against the Fighting Irish, erasing a 20-point deficit in the second half to secure an eight-point triumph.

But falling behind by more than 20 points on the road to Duke (11-8, 9-6), a team that is playing quite well of late, proved simply too much for the Orange to overcome.

Clemson Fills Open Date with Game at Syracuse on March 3 (clemsontigers.com)

Clemson’s game at Syracuse (originally scheduled for Jan. 12) has been scheduled for March 3. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. and will air on ACCN.

Mike Waters "On The Block" 2-23 (ESPN; radio; Axe)

Syracuse.com Men’s Basketball Reporter Mike Waters joins Brent to review last night’s loss to Duke, discuss one player who they feel is a “barometer” for the team as a whole, and more.

Axe: Both Syracuse basketball teams having trouble out of the gate (PS; $; Axe)

Every sporting event has to start somehow.

Football has the kickoff. Hockey and lacrosse have the faceoff. Baseball has the first pitch.

NASCAR races begin when someone yells, “Gentlemen, start your engines.”

A horse race starts when the gates fly open. In boxing, the ring announcer gets you “ready to rumble” with an over-the-top introduction.

In basketball, the tipoff starts the game. For some reason, that just hasn’t registered with either the Syracuse University men’s or women’s basketball team, as both teams have been struggling in the first half.

Are the clocks set correctly at the Carmelo K. Anthony Center?

Because this is getting weird.

The men’s team has trailed at halftime in five of its last seven games. Syracuse had a 4-3 record in that stretch but saw some wild extremes in it.

Hokies come up short against Georgia Tech - Virginia Tech Athletics (hokiesp[orts.com)

Inside Cassell Coliseum, the No. 16/15 Virginia Tech men's basketball team suffered a 69-53 setback versus Georgia Tech on Tuesday night. The defeat marks the Hokies' first loss since early February and ends Tech's three-game winning streak at home against the Yellow Jackets.

The Hokies fall to 14-5 overall and 8-4 in conference play. Georgia Tech moves to 12-8 on the season and 8-6 in the ACC. The Yellow Jackets win marks their third straight victory and second consecutive success against the Hokies (76-57 - Feb. 4, 2020).

Georgia Tech received key contributions on offense from senior Moses Wright who recorded his fifth double-double this season with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Michael Devoe added 12 points and senior Jose Alvardo tallied 13 on 50% shooting.

The Yellow Jackets got after it on the defensive end as they forced Tech to commit 16 turnovers and then scored 19 off those mistakes. Georgia Tech limited the Hokies offense as Tech shot just 41% from the field and 35% from behind the arc.

Despite the loss, forward Keve Aluma notched his sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 boards. Sophomore Nahiem Alleyne added 12 points and guard Tyrece Radford scored 11 in his return to play.

Duke basketball could put three on ACC All-Freshman Team (balldurham.com; Giles)

Three Duke basketball rookies are making cases for ACC All-Freshman honors.

Barring ridiculous performances in these final two weeks of the regular season, the three-year streak of at least one Duke basketball freshman on the All-ACC First Team will likely end. In fact, no first-year players anywhere are likely to receive this recognition when the conference announces awards in early March.

Why not? Well, the top shelf of the nation’s newcomers seems to be down a notch. After all, Duke and UNC welcomed two of the three highest-rated 2020 classes. Plus, Florida State has Scottie Barnes, a five-star who ranked No. 7 overall on the 247Sports 2020 Composite.

Surely, all the canceled games and lack of exhibition play are factors in the equation as well, seeing that these limitations have most noticeably affected young squads. Of course, Jalen Johnson’s “foot injury” and recent permanent departure from the Blue Devils didn’t help either in this regard.

Nevertheless, although no rookies boast extraordinary season averages entering the homestretch of ACC play, some are taking steps toward stardom as of late.

Three of them are in Durham.

All three have been vital contributors to their team’s turnaround, which was on full display at home on Monday night as Duke (11-8, 9-6 ACC) extended its win streak to four by outgunning Syracuse (13-7, 7-6 ACC). So let’s rank the three based on their individual chances — from least to most likely — to represent the Blue Devils among the five players on the ACC All-Freshman Team…

Upstate NY cities named among best ‘climate havens’ as the world grows hotter (PS; $; Coin)

In a world wracked by the extremes of climate change, Upstate New York might become one of the best places to live.

That’s according to technology and science writer David Pogue, a correspondent for CBS News Sunday Morning. In an interview with nonprofit news outlet Next Avenue about his new book, “How to Prepare for Climate Change,” Pogue said cold, snowy Syracuse and Buffalo could be shelters from the storms.

“I looked at fifteen ‘climate haven’ cities in the sense that they have no wildfires, no hurricanes and unlimited clean, fresh water,” he told Next Avenue. “And they tend to be in the Great Lakes area.”

Other climate havens, he said, are Cleveland; Cincinnati; Duluth, Minnesota; and Madison, Wisconsin.

While Pogue specifically mentioned Syracuse in the interview, it’s not among the cities detailed in the book. He does devote a page to Buffalo, though.

“The city’s prime spot on Lake Erie means that fresh water will never be a problem, that wildfire risk is minimal, and that water sports, fishing and lovely parks are all part of the portfolio,” he writes in the “Where to Live” chapter.

Syracuse topped a similar list in 2013, when online real estate service Trulia named Syracuse the safest city in America from five major natural disasters: hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, forest fires and earthquakes. Buffalo landed fourth on that list, which was also dominated by Great Lakes states.

“Most metros were high risk for at least one of the five natural disasters, even though no metro area is high risk for everything,” the Trulia team wrote. “The metros at medium-to-low risk for all five disasters span Ohio (Cleveland, Akron, and Dayton), Upstate New York (Syracuse and Buffalo), and other parts of the Northeast and Midwest, away from the coasts.”

In his climate change book, Pogue noted that the cost of living in relatively low in Upstate New York, citing Buffalo’s as 82% of the national average. He notes the city’s seven Frank Lloyd Wright buildings and the system of parks designed by Frederic Law Olmsted, who also designed New York City’s Central Park and Boston’s Emerald Necklace.
