Welcome to National Electricity Day!

National Electricity Day takes place on the anniversary of the date in 1752 when Benjamin Franklin flew a kite in a thunderstorm, with the intent of proving that lightning was caused by a discharge of electricity (some sources say he flew his kite on June 10). His experiment led to further understanding of positive and negative charges, the proving that lightning was an electrical discharge, and to the invention of the lightning rod—which provided a safe way to discharge electricity and a way to prevent fires. Lightning rods are still used today to protect buildings, ships, and people.

The Orange practice at the Greensboro Coliseum March 10, 2020, as they prepare for the ACC Tournament . Syracuse will play the winner of the Virginia Tech-North Carolina game. Assistant coach Adrian Autry works with the team.

What’s the biggest change SU basketball will see under Autry? (PS; $; Waters)

Syracuse’s transition from the Jim Boeheim era to Adrian Autry’s head coaching debut is going to be a theme throughout this offseason and into the 2023-24 campaign.

After all, this isn’t your average coaching change. Boeheim’s tenure lasted 47 years, going back to 1976. Things are going to have a very different feel as the SU basketball program embarks on a new regime.

That’s where we begin with this week’s Mike’s Mailbox.

Let’s get to those questions.

Q: What do you foresee will be Adrian Autry’s biggest change as it relates to coaching Syracuse?

Ray

Mike:
The obvious answer, and the one that’s going to be talked about the most, is defense. As he takes over for Jim Boeheim, Autry has said he will play more man-to-man defense after years in which Syracuse became synonymous with the 2-3 zone.

But there’s another change that I’m expecting and that’s tempo.

Syracuse Basketball: Projected starting line-up and rotations for 2023-24 (itlh; Adler)

In the upcoming season, Syracuse basketball will look to return to national relevancy, after the Orange sported a combined 33-32 mark over the past seasons and missed the NCAA Tournament in both campaigns.

It remains to be seen how the ‘Cuse will fare on the court during the 2023-24 term, with Adrian Autry at the helm of the program after replacing the Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim this past March.

To me, Autry and his assistants have done a fantastic job this off-season, retaining eight 2022-23 players after point guard Judah Mintz recently elected to return for his sophomore year, bringing in four transfers and signing one three-star high-school commit to fill out the 2023-24 roster with the maximum 13 scholarship players.

In all fairness, question marks are there for the Orange in the upcoming stanza. Two of the team’s top-three scorers from a season ago, senior center Jesse Edwards and senior shooting guard Joe Girard III, transferred to West Virginia and Clemson, respectively.

How well the ‘Cuse will shoot from the perimeter is something to monitor. Over the past two years, the Orange has proven sub-par on defense and on the glass, and Autry will attempt to shore up both of those key areas in 2023-24.

One thing, from my perspective, is relatively clear. The team’s 13-player roster is deep, athletic, long, versatile, intriguing and promising. SU coaches will have an abundance of line-up possibilities at their disposal in 2023-24, and as they seek to play at an up-tempo, fast pace, employing both man-to-man and zone defensive schemes, fatigue certainly shouldn’t prove an issue.

Syracuse Basketball: Fast-rising 4-star PG recruit joins prep powerhouse (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball recruiting target Mikey Lewis, one of the hottest prospects around the country in recent months due to his stellar play on the AAU circuit, will spend his senior year at one of the nation’s top prep schools.

According to a social media post, the 2024 four-star point guard is transferring to Prolific Prep in Napa Valley, Calif., which was a top-10 national team in the 2022-23 season and participated in this spring’s prestigious GEICO Nationals.

As a junior in the 2022-23 stanza, the 6-foot-3 Lewis was fantastic for Accelerated Prep in Lakewood, Colo. During this spring’s grassroots basketball circuit, he has proven one of the top scorers for the 17U group of the Oakland, Calif.-based Oakland Soldiers in Nike’s EYBL league.

’ ! Super excited to announce the addition of 2024 Mikey Lewis.
Mikey is a Bay Area native, terrific student and big time two-way player. He has led the @Soldiers_Salute on the @NikeEYB the last two seasons. Mikey also led the Grind Session in pts and stls this year pic.twitter.com/DmpCHpoKw4

The Orange coaching staff offered a scholarship to Lewis in late April. He has said in more than one interview that he wants to visit the ‘Cuse, and also that Syracuse basketball is among the suitors he hears from the most these days.

WATCH: Pitt's Aidan Fisch reflects on his viral senior night moment, dream run through March Madness (P&G; Hiles)

While most know him for the last-minute basket he scored in late February against Syracuse, the story of former Pitt basketball player Aidan Fisch consists of more than his viral senior day moment. Throughout his collegiate journey, the Murrysville native went from fan to team manager to walk-on to scholarship athlete on an NCAA tournament qualifier. Lobster salad falls out of the roll at Barado's on the Water, Central Square, N.Y. (Jared Paventi | jaredpaventi@gmail.com)Jared Paventi | jaredpaventi@gma

Seafood and summer vibes at Barado’s on the Water (Dining Out Review) (PS; Paventi)

Excuse Barado’s on the Water for believing that a fish taco shouldn’t be boring. In the northeastern United States, the rote fish taco means grilled tilapia or a fried fish, chopped up and stuffed into a tortilla. Barado’s elevates the game by using grilled mahi mahi, skewing more toward the San Diego-style tacos we remember eating on an all-too-long-ago work trip.

The fish was prepared just right and cut into large chunks before being stuffed into flour tortillas with cilantro-lime slaw and homemade pico de gallo salsa. The slaw served a dual role, adding a crunchy texture and pairing with the salsa to give each bite an assertive cilantro flavor. A drizzle of chipotle mayo added some smoke and a slight bit of heat.

It’s not a Mexican or Cali-Mex restaurant, but these fish tacos were well executed and a nice diversion from the ordinary preparation.

This elevated approach appears throughout the menu at Barado’s on the Water. Fried haddock ($18.95) with housemade tartar sauce features on the menu, but so does baked haddock with citrus beurre blanc and a cracker topping ($22.95). You can get fried calamari ($14.50), but you could also get hand-cut eggplant fries ($13.95).

Black bear spotted in village of Tully, schools keep kids inside, alerts community (PS; Stevenson)

The Tully school district alerted families Wednesday that a black bear has been spotted in the middle of the village of Tully.

The bear was seen near a local coffee shop/restaurant, Bloomin’ Cup at 13 Clinton St., and in the surrounding area, according to an alert the district sent to parents. The bear was about a third of a mile from the district’s two schools at 20 State St.

The district reported it was keeping students inside for the time being.

Law enforcement and the state Department of Environmental Conservation have been notified, according to the alert.

The DEC received a call Wednesday morning from a homeowner in Tully who saw a bear, a yearling, in her yard eating bird seed, according to a DEC spokesperson.

The homeowner said she banged pots and pans to scare the bear away, he said. The bear was reluctant to leave at first, but eventually left and has not returned.
