Welcome to National Peanut Butter Day!
Today we celebrate peanut butter, a food that is a blend of ground shelled peanuts, vegetable oil (usually hydrogenated), and a little bit of salt. Additives are often added to keep the oil from separating, and to make the peanut butter creamier; sugar is often added as well. However, natural peanut butter only contains peanuts and an oil—often peanut oil. Natural peanut butter must be refrigerated after opening and can last about six months; other peanut butter does not need to be refrigerated and also can last about six months. Peanut butter is sold smooth or chunky, smooth being the most popular type. A lot of peanuts are used to make one jar of peanut butter—about 850 peanuts for an 18-ounce jar! The reduced-fat version only has 60% of the peanuts as the regular, which are replaced with maltodextrin and soy protein. The calorie count is the same, but there is just less fat. Besides being high in fat, peanut butter contains a decent amount of iron, niacin, and protein. Peanut butter is so popular that more than half of all peanuts end up being used to make it.
Peanut butter was developed in 1890 by a St. Louis physician, as a protein substitute for those with poor teeth. George A. Bayle Jr. mechanized the creation and began selling it. In 1903, a patent was given to Ambrose W. Straub for a peanut butter machine. At the 1904 St. Louis World Fair, also known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, peanut butter was promoted as a health food. In 1922, L. Rosefield of Rosefield Packing Co. in Alameda, California, found a way to prevent the separation and spoilage of peanut butter. He began marketing his creation as Skippy in 1932. Sliced bread was invented in 1928. It was around the early 1930s when peanut butter became a favorite sandwich spread, especially with children, and began being paired with grape jelly to make peanut butter and jelly—or PB&J—sandwiches.

Jamir Watkins, Florida State dominate Syracuse basketball in second half (PS; $; Ditota)
Jamir Watkins had a simple strategy for how he would attack Syracuse’s defense Tuesday night in the JMA Wireless Dome.
“Really just get in gaps and try to create for myself and my teammates,” the 6-foot-7 Florida State guard said. “I knew the game was gonna open up once I started getting layups.”
The game opened up for FSU in general and for Watkins in particular. He got a lot of layups against a Syracuse team that could not guard him.
The Seminoles outscored the Orange 50-33 in the second half to leave the dome with an 85-69 road win over SU.
Watkins scored 27 points in a variety of ways. He went 2-for-3 from the 3-point line. He went 8-for-15 overall and 9-of-12 from the free throw line. He also collected 11 rebounds.
He did all that damage in about 29 minutes.
“We knew he was one of the guys they go to,” SU coach Adrian Autry said. “He did a good job of getting into the lane and being big and strong and physical. He had 27 points and 11 rebounds. He was a handful today and we didn’t go a good job with him.”
Watkins was the Seminoles catalyst, but the Orange struggled to guard FSU in general in the second half.
Florida State shot 58 overall in the second half. The Seminoles shot 3-of-6 from the 3-point line and made 11 of the 12 free throws they attempted.

SU basketball offense stalls in 85-69 loss to Florida State: ‘We played terrible’ (PS; $; Waters)
The free-flowing, 3-point shooting offense that had highlighted each of Syracuse’s last two victories disappeared into Florida State’s spider’s web defense in an 86-69 loss to the Seminoles at the JMA Wireless Dome on Tuesday night.
In recent wins over Pittsburgh and Miami, Syracuse had shot the ball better than it had all season from 3-point range. The Orange had shot a combined 22-for-49 from beyond the arc in the two key ACC victories and averaged 15 assists.
Florida State took that all away on Tuesday night.
The Seminoles sent a seemingly endless supply of long, athletic defenders at the Orange, bottling up and bogging down Syracuse’s offense.
“Offensively, we were stalled,’’ SU coach Adrian Autry said. “We couldn’t score.’’
Syracuse went 1-for-14 from 3-point range and turned the ball over 16 times in the disappointing loss. The Orange, which as a team had been shooting 74% at the free throw line, missed a season-high 11 foul shots, finishing the game 22-for-33 from the charity stripe.
“We picked the worst time to not make anything,’’ Autry said. “We couldn’t make free throws, 3-point shots.’’
But more than anything else, Florida State took a Syracuse offense that had been clicking on all cylinders and clogged it up like diesel fuel in an unleaded car’s gas tank.
“We couldn’t get anything out of our offense,’’ Autry said. “This was the worst it’s been the whole year. We just couldn’t get the ball to move.’’

Freeman named McDonald’s All-American, SU’s first out of high school since Richardson (PS; $; Carlson)
Syracuse basketball recruit Donnie Freeman was named to the McDonald’s All-American team on Tuesday, becoming the Orange’s first high school recruit to play in the prestigious game since Malachi Richardson in 2015.
Darius Bazley, who signed with Syracuse but never played for the Orange, was a McDonald’s All-American in 2018.
Current Syracuse guard JJ Starling was a McDonald’s All-American in 2022 but came to the Orange as a transfer from Notre Dame. Only 24 boys and 24 girls are selected to play in the game each year.
Freeman will become the 22nd McDonald’s All-American to play for Syracuse when he suits up for the Orange.
The list includes Tony “Red” Bruin, Pearl Washington, Michael Brown, Rodney Walker, Stephen Thompson, Derrick Coleman, Billy Owens, Conrad McRae, Adrian Autry, John Wallace, Michael Lloyd, Carmelo Anthony, Eric Devendorf, Jonny Flynn, Donte’ Green, Fab Melo, Michael Carter-Williams, Rakeem Christmas, DaJuan Coleman, Malachi Richardson and JJ Starling.
A 23rd player, Rick Harmon, was named to the game as an alternate and played at Syracuse.
Freeman’s nomination coincides with the 6-foot-9, 205-pound forward’s rise up the rankings of various national recruiting websites.
He has been focused on adding weight to make as big an impact as possible for Syracuse next season and delivered an impressive performance in front of the coaching staff at the recent HoopHall Classic.
He climbed to No. 19 on ESPN’s list of the country’s top recruits, the highest Syracuse player since DaJuan Coleman was ranked No. 14 in 2012.

Syracuse men’s basketball: takeaways from sloppy outing against Florida State (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)
The Syracuse Orange basketball squads were the last men’s and women’s pairing in NCAA Division 1 to both be undefeated on their home court. That came to an end Tuesday night against Florida State, as SU missed shots at the line and from the arc alike in an 85-69 loss.

Down, but Not Out
I feel like I need to say this from the jump: As poor as the Orange played, this loss isn’t as season-altering as it may appear.Sure it kills some momentum after Quadir Copeland’s buzzer beater against Miami, but in the grand scheme of bracketology, I firmly believe this loss will age fine. FSU was hampered by injuries in their non-conference schedule and now that the ‘Noles are much closer to full strength, they’ve used their bench extremely well to create turning points in close games.

... but what followed was great clock management by the visitors, who wore out the Orange defense, then snatched on careless turnovers in the midcourt. A 13-2 run put them in control for good.
Assuming another Tar Heel victory, SU should be aiming for 8-3/9-2 the rest of the way. That puts them in good position to need only one or two ACC Tournament wins to be on in serious consideration for the big dance.

Syracuse Basketball: Top takeaways as Florida State hands ‘Cuse first home loss (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball suffered its first setback at the JMA Wireless Dome during the 2023-24 season on Tuesday night, as Florida State wore the Orange down in a 16-point win for the Seminoles.
The ‘Cuse (13-6, 4-4 in the ACC) had won two straight but fell flat against FSU on the Hill. Save for sophomore point guard Judah Mintz, who had a game-high 28 points, the Orange got little help on the offensive end as Florida State erupted in the second half after trailing by one point at the break.
The Seminoles (12-7, 6-2 in the ACC) may not have an overly stellar record to date in the current term, but this is a good squad that is playing well these days and is in the thick of the race for the No. 2 spot in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s pecking order, behind third-ranked North Carolina.
Utilizing a deep bench, FSU heavily relied on a full-court press that appeared to weigh on the Orange, which committed a flood of turnovers and had a one-dimensional offense consisting solely of Mintz in the second half.

ACC Roundup - Pitt & Virginia Tech Win Plus Florida State Stays Hot (DBR; King)
In Tuesday’s ACC Action, Pitt knocked off Georgia Tech 72-64, Florida State continued its revival with a win over Syracuse, 85-69 and Virginia Tech took down BC 76-71.
Give Pitt credit - it would have been easy to lose after the emotional win at Duke, but they didn’t. Blake Hinson came back to earth, shooting 3-8 and just 1-4 from deep, but Carlton Carrington had a big game with 19 points. Ishmael Leggett had 14 while Jaland Lowe and Guillermo Diaz Graham had 12, although he fouled out in 17 minutes.
Federiko Federiko didn’t foul out but he also struggled and that’s at least partly because Georgia Tech’s Baye Ndongo is a load. The freshman star finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
It wasn’t enough though as the Yellow Jackets lost again. Other than their brilliant game at Clemson, Tech has now lost seven of the last eight.
That’s pretty much the opposite for Florida State as the ‘Noles have now won six of their last seven.
It was a tight game with 8:48 to play when FSU started to pull away. It didn't help that the Orange shot just 1-14 from three point range. Judah Mintz shot 10-15 and racked up 28 points while Jamir Watkins led Florida State with 27.

In the Finger Lakes, a group of distinctive restaurants is split up and sold to new owners (PS; $; Cazentre)
Anyone who travels through and/or dines out in the Finger Lakes has probably noticed those restaurants with the distinctive red and green awnings in several cities and towns across the region.
Now Pete Mitchell, the founder of the five Parker’s Grille and Taproom locations, is selling off all but one of them, along with two other restaurants he owns in the area, Halsey’s in Geneva and 84 Fall in Seneca Falls.
Mitchell said decided to sell because he is 67 and wants to “scale back.” He’s selling the locations not as a group but to separate owners. Some have experience managing the restaurants and one is a self-described “loyal customer” who bought three of them.
“It’s time for me to let go a bit,” Mitchell said from his winter home in Florida. “The restaurants are like children. I love them all. But I know the people taking over and I know they understand how to take care of them.”
Mitchell opened the first Parker’s in Geneva in 1996, then added locations in Auburn (2000), Seneca Falls (2011), Newark (2012) and Penn Yan (2021). All are styled as neighborhood bar and grills. Along the way, he opened Halsey’s, with a “casually elegant” menu, in 2007 and 84 Fall, a tapas bar, in 2017. Each is located in the heart of the downtown section of its home city.
Mitchell sold the Parker’s location at 86 Fall St. in Seneca Falls in December to Jim Hendrickson, the son of one of his former managers and a veteran bartender at Parker’s himself. Hendrickson renamed it Parker’s on Fall.
“The Parker’s formula works well,” Hendrickson told the Finger Lakes Times in a recent report. “My thought is if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.”
Meanwhile, manager Michaela Nicpon is finalizing the deal to buy the Auburn location at 129 Genesee St.

Dave Matthews Band tour dates include 2 nights in Upstate NY (PS; Herbert)
Dave Matthews Band is returning to Upstate New York on its 2024 tour dates.
DMB will perform two nights at the Broadview Stage at SPAC (Saratoga Performing Arts Center) in Saratoga Springs on Friday, July 5, and Saturday, July 6. No opening act has been named for either show; both will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets for the concerts will go on sale to the general public Friday, Feb. 16, at 10 a.m. through Live Nation. Presale tickets are available now for members DMB Warehouse Fan Association members at warehouse.davematthewsband.com.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Dave Matthews Band’s debut album, “Under the Table and Dreaming.” The jam/rock band’s hits include “What Would You Say,” “Two Step,” “Don’t Drink the Water,” “Crush,” “Ants Marching” and “American Baby.”
The Dave Matthews-led group released its 10th studio album, “Walk Around the Moon,” last year.
