Presidents' Day is officially known as Washington's Birthday, and is a holiday to honor the first president, George Washington, who was born on February 22, 1732. It is a federal holiday, as well as a state holiday in many states. In 1800, the year after Washington's death, the day became an unofficial day of remembrance. The centennial of his birth was a particularly important day of celebration, and the Washington Monument went under construction in 1848. Congress and President Rutherford B. Hayes made Washington's Birthday a holiday in 1879. Originally only federal offices in Washington D.C. were closed, but this was expanded to all federal offices in 1885. At this time the holiday was observed on Washington's actual birthday.

An insurmountable rebounding deficit leads to Syracuse’s loss at Georgia Tech: ‘That was the game right there’ (PS; $; Waters)
The last cut hurt the worst. Or the last rebound.
Georgia Tech dominated the boards in its 65-60 win over Syracuse on Saturday at the McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta. The Yellow Jackets collected a whopping 49 rebounds to Syracuse’s 28.
And the last one, the last missed shot that found its way into the hands of a Georgia Tech player, probably hurt the worst.
Georgia Tech held a slim 62-60 lead when Kyle Sturdivant went to the free throw line with 23 seconds remaining in the game. Sturdivant sank the first attempt, but missed the second.
The ball bounced off the rim. Players from both teams tried to corral the miss, but Georgia Tech guard Miles Kelly swooped in and wound up with the ball.
Syracuse’s chance to tie the game vanished. After being fouled, Kelly went to the free throw line and put the game out of reach with two shots.
“It comes down to rebounding,’’ Syracuse coach Adrian Autry said after the game. “The difference. 49 to 28. That was the difference. That was the game right there. We have to do a better job battling on the glass.’’
Rebounding is not a new issue for the Orange. It’s been a season-long struggle on the boards, but the problem has been exacerbated in ACC play and even more so in Syracuse’s last six games.

The play still stands out in Rex Trobridge’s mind 60 years later.
The Syracuse basketball team was playing Pittsburgh at Manley Field House in the 1963-64 season. Trobridge, a 6-foot-9 center, was a sophomore. He had been part of Syracuse coach Fred Lewis’ first recruiting class; a group that also included the legendary Dave Bing and a spindly, bespectacled walk-on named Jim Boeheim.
By the start of his sophomore year, Boeheim had earned a scholarship, but he still barely looked the part of a basketball player at 6-foot-4 and 168 pounds.
But there was Boeheim, in the game against Pittsburgh, getting set to draw a charge against Brian Generalovich, a former member of Pitt’s football team who packed 210 pounds on his 6-4 frame.
“He might’ve gone around Jim, but instead, he decided to go over him,’' Trobridge said of Generalovich.
Boeheim took the charge, but the collision sent him into the third row of the bleachers behind the basket where many of Syracuse’s football players sat.
“He was a competitor,’' Trobridge said of Boeheim. “A fiery competitor.’'
Trobridge told the story in an appearance on the Inside Syracuse Basketball podcast. The podcast is the first of a series of five interviews with people who span Boeheim’s time at Syracuse; from his playing days in the 1960s to his beginnings as SU’s head coach in 1976 and throughout the rest of his career.
The series will lead up to Syracuse’s game against Notre Dame this Saturday when the university will recognize Boeheim, whose career came to an end after 47 years last March.
“It’s really quite remarkable,’' Trobridge said of Boeheim’s long career at Syracuse. “I can’t think off the top of my head of a coach who has coached for 47 years; much less at the school where they began. His overall time was over 60 years from when he walked on in September of 1962 and then never left.’'

Syracuse men’s basketball: three takeaways from the loss to Georgia Tech (TNIAAM; Wall)
The Syracuse Orange couldn’t build on the momentum from beating North Carolina as they dropped a winnable road game to Georgia Tech last night. Let’s look at the takeaways.
Offense stagnates
A lot of people are going to point to the 4-25 from 3 as the reason the Orange lost, but after dominating in the paint against UNC, Syracuse fell in love with the mid-range shot in Atlanta. The Orange went 14-18 at the rim, but only 2-4 from further out inside the paint. They were 2-13 on shots from the midrange and if you aren’t hitting there, it makes the long-range shooting woes even worse.
Syracuse didn’t make a field goal after that Bell 3 gave the Orange a 55-54 lead. It was the type of look the team needed to try and get earlier in the second half. Teams are willing to pack the lane to let Syracuse take open jumpers, so once again it’s on the coaching staff to find some new ways to get points, which leads to the next takeaway.
Shallow depth
Coming into the season I felt like the Orange could overcome these halfcourt offensive concerns with pressure defense. We’ve seen how well this team is when it comes to causing turnovers but with no depth, the full-court press isn’t an option now. Syracuse forced 17 turnovers last night and you can’t help but wonder if they could have run away with the game if they had turned up the defensive pressure even more.
It’s not an excuse, but being down three players we expected to be in the rotation (and part of the press package), has had an impact on the season. While it might be too late for this squad, Adrian Autry should keep in mind next season that the press doesn’t have to be a last resort.
Rebounding
Individually the number of rebounds for the Syracuse players don’t look terrible. Collectively the Orange ended up on the short end of a 49-28 rebounding battle, and gave Georgia Tech 12 offensive boards, including four in the final four minutes of the game. Those extra opportunities allowed the Yellow Jackets to close the game on an 11-5 run and make the slim Syracuse post-season hopes even slimmer.

Syracuse Falls Apart Against Georgia Tech (orangefizz.net; Horning)
March Madness hopes are gone. Syracuse lost 65-60 to Georgia Tech on the road on Saturday after the Orange played their best game of the season against No. 7 North Carolina on Tuesday. Embarrassing.
The inconsistency of SU continues to show game in and game out. Whatever the case may be, the Orange couldn’t get anything going offensively against the Yellow Jackets. And neither could they.
The game was a slugfest, one that Syracuse still had a chance to secure down the stretch, but couldn’t take advantage. Forward Chris Bell knocked down a three-pointer with six minutes left in the game to put the Orange up by one. That bucket was the last one that head coach Adrian Autry saw go in between the red circle. The Orange failed to make a basket and went 0-6 in the last six minutes of the game.
SU shot 37% from the floor in the game. How about Syracuse’s three-point shooting? It made just one three-pointer in the first half, and three in the second half. The Orange converted 16% from beyond the arc.
The funny thing is Georgia Tech didn’t shoot much better. GT made 39% of its shot attempts and 28% from downtown. Even though Syracuse shot poorly, it still had a chance down the stretch to win the game against a bad Georgia Tech squad.
SU posted its lowest point total Saturday night since the two losses against Tennessee and Gonzaga in the Maui Invitational. The Orange only scored 56 and 57 points, respectively, in those contests.

The Wolfpack have gone 11-3 at home. NC State averages 75.5 points while outscoring opponents by 4.7 points per game.
The Orange are 7-8 in ACC play. Syracuse averages 75.4 points while outscoring opponents by 1.1 points per game.
NC State scores 75.5 points per game, 1.2 more points than the 74.3 Syracuse allows. Syracuse averages 6.9 made 3-pointers per game this season, 0.1 fewer makes per game than NC State gives up.
TOP PERFORMERS: Horne is shooting 43.4% from beyond the arc with 3.0 made 3-pointers per game for the Wolfpack, while averaging 17.2 points. Casey Morsell is shooting 41.3% and averaging 11.9 points over the past 10 games for NC State.
Judah Mintz is averaging 18.3 points, 4.5 assists and 2.1 steals for the Orange. JJ Starling is averaging 18.4 points over the last 10 games for Syracuse.
LAST 10 GAMES: Wolfpack: 5-5, averaging 74.5 points, 33.9 rebounds, 12.8 assists, 8.4 steals and 3.6 blocks per game while shooting 44.9% from the field. Their opponents have averaged 75.0 points per game.
Orange: 5-5, averaging 74.0 points, 29.9 rebounds, 13.5 assists, 9.4 steals and 2.9 blocks per game while shooting 45.5% from the field. Their opponents have averaged 76.9 points.

Tech Defense Stymies Syracuse Down The Stretch in 65-60 Win (ramblinwreck.com)
A stifling Georgia Tech defense held Syracuse without a field goal for the final 5:50 of the game and the Yellow Jackets downed the Orange, 65-60, on Saturday evening at McCamish Pavilion.
After digging out of an early 9-2 hole and leading by as many as 10 points in the second half, Georgia Tech (11-15, 4-11 ACC) found itself down 55-54 after Syracuse’s Chris Bell hit a 3-pointer with just under six minutes to go in the game. The deficit was the Yellow Jackets’ first since they trailed 21-19 with seven minutes to go in the first half.
However, Tech’s defense stymied Syracuse over the final 5:50, forcing the Orange to go 0-for-6 from the field and outscoring SU by an 11-5 margin down the stretch.
Baye Ndongo gave the Jackets the lead for good on a put-back that put Tech up 59-57 with 3:16 to go, and Tech stretched the advantage to four points at 62-58 on an old-fashioned three-point play by Miles Kelly with 32 seconds left on the clock.
Syracuse made two free throws on its ensuing possession to pull back within two points at 62-60 and, on the other end, Tech’s Kyle Sturdivant made the first of two foul shots to extend the lead to 63-60.
Sturdivant missed the second shot, but Kelly made perhaps the biggest play of the game when he corralled the miss to keep possession with the Jackets. He was fouled and made both free throws to cap a three-point trip down the floor for Tech, sealing the win for the Jackets by putting them up by five with 18 seconds to play.

NC State Moves Up to 5th in the ACC Standings After Victory Over Tigers (packinsider.com; Bradham)
After defeating the Tigers in dramatic fashion down in South Carolina this evening, NC State moved up 2 spots in the ACC Standings, sitting at 5th. Throughout the events of the day, Pitt also moved up 2 spots to 4th, and Wake Forest and Clemson both fell 2 spots, landing at 6th and 7th respectively.

Luxury townhomes and single-family homes planned for town of Onondaga (PS; $; Doran)
Construction is expected to begin in the new few months on a series of luxury townhomes and single-family homes in a new development off Onondaga Road in the town of Onondaga.
The $5 million Woodridge Heights will be built in three phases on land off Onondaga Road in the Split Rock area of Onondaga, near Onondaga Community College, said Mark A. DeAngelis Jr., vice president and principal of Mark Antony Development and Mark Antony Homes.
In all, it will have 60 townhomes and 12-single family homes. The site plan has been approved by the town of Onondaga and construction is expected to begin this summer, he said.
The first phase of Woodridge Heights will have eight townhomes and eight single-family homes. The townhomes range from 1,600 to 2,400 square feet and can have two, three or more bedrooms. They will sell for between $450,000 to $700,000 depending on the size, he said. The single-family homes will start at about $600,000.
The development will have a homeowners’ association, and the fee for that will include lawn maintenance and snow removal, he said.
Demand is expected to be high for these homes, DeAngelis said.
“A lot of people in the western suburbs want to downsize and get out of their older, bigger homes,” DeAngelis said. “The townhomes offer them something a bit smaller and if they want to go south for the winter, they can leave and have their property maintained during the winter.”
Mark Antony Homes concentrates on building homes on the western side of Onondaga County and has built about 1,000 homes in the area.
