Pi Day celebrates the pi symbol (π) and its importance to mathematics. The symbol is a Greek letter, and it is used in mathematics to represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. The first digits of this ratio are 3.14159, and the number continues infinitely without pattern. It has been calculated to over one trillion digits after the decimal point. Most calculations only need the first few digits. Even the spherical volume of the whole universe can be calculated by using just 39 digits after the decimal point. The symbol "π" was first used in 1706 by William Jones. It gained in popularity after being used by Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1737. The first large and official celebration of the day took place at the San Francisco Exploratorium in 1988. It was organized by Larry Shaw, a physicist at the Exploratorium. At the inaugural event, people marched around a circular space and ate fruit pies. In 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution supporting Pi Day.

How Syracuse’s 20-win season came crashing down in 18-point loss to NC State: ‘It wasn’t supposed to end like this’ (PS; $; Waters)
The harsh reality of Syracuse’s 83-65 loss to North Carolina State in the ACC tournament’s second round cascaded over JJ Starling in the game’s final seconds.
Syracuse had entered the conference tournament with wins in five of its last seven games. The Orange had beaten NC State twice in the regular season. A win over the Wolfpack would have sent onto a quarterfinal match with the vaunted Duke Blue Devils.
But all the warm, fuzzy feelings of Syracuse’s strong finish to the regular season chilled under NC State’s second-half onslaught. The Wolfpack took control of the game with a 21-to-2 run and wound up scoring 48 second-half points.
And there was Starling, along with his teammates, on the court as the final second ticked off the scoreboard’s clock.
“It’s really over,’’ Starling recalled thinking. “It wasn’t supposed to end like that. We know we’re a much better team than what we showed today. And then just watching time wind down and NC State fans are cheering.’’
Starling paused for a moment.
“It just hurts,’’ he said.
The loss hurt so bad, because this Syracuse team had accomplished so much good during a trying and tumultuous season.
Before the season even began, Syracuse lost Chance Westry, a 6-foot-6 transfer from Auburn, who suffered a season-ending injury in practice. Naheem McLeod, a 7-foot-4 center, started the first 14 games before missing the rest of the season with a foot injury.
Then, Adrian Autry, in his first season as Syracuse’s head coach, made the decision to dismiss junior forward Benny Williams from the team.
Syracuse suffered blowout losses to Tennessee, Gonzaga, Virginia, North Carolina, Duke and Wake Forest. But each time a loss seemed to put the Orange on the precipice of collapse, it would bounce back.
“From my view, I thought each month, each week, we improved at something,’’ Autry said. “I thought we had really steady improvement. I thought they wanted to get better. They had a lot to prove. I had a lot to prove. We all had a lot to prove.’’

Condensed Game: NC State throttles Syracuse to advance in ACC Tournament (247sports.com; Clark)
NC State (19-14, 9-11 ACC) secured its second win in as many days with a blowout 83-65 victory over Syracuse in the ACC Tournament Wednesday night.
Junior guard Jayden Taylor led the way for the Wolfpack with 18 points for the second straight game, while shooting 50 percent from the field, and pulling nine rebounds.
Graduate guard Michael O'Connell finished with 16 points and graduate forward D.J. Burns added 15 points. After missing the first game of the tournament due to a hip injury, graduate guard DJ Horne came off the bench to score 16 points. Junior forward Mohamed Diarra also had an impressive all-around performance, totaling eight points, 14 rebounds, six assists and a block.
State, which went on a 20-2 run in the second half to blow the game open, was also solid defensively, forcing 19 Orange turnovers.
Next, the No. 10-seeded Wolfpack takes on No. 2 Duke Thursday at 7 p.m. on ESPN. The Blue Devils took the lone meeting between the two teams a few weeks ago by a score of 79-64.

Turnovers: F–
Is there any lower grade possible than an ? Can I give a Z for this category? All throughout the season, when the Orange turned the ball over a lot, they lost. When they played a clean game they won. In a postseason environment, this is the stuff that stands out. It shouldn’t be surprising that this is what plagued the ‘Cuse in the ACC tournament.
The Officiating:
Usually, this isn’t a focus of the report card. But today it was just to bad to ignore. The officials seemed to only call a foul if it was Chris Bell. DJ Burns was throwing elbow after elbow in the paint and the Orange were knocked a number of times in the paint. It got so bad that at one point, Adrian Autry couldn’t even argue anymore.
Quadir Copeland: D
A lack of consistency has been the issue all season long for not just Copeland but the entire team. Tonight, when it mattered most, Quadir just simply didn’t have it. Like always, he showed signs of stardom with a few flashy layups and spins but the mistakes outweighed any of those plays. Copeland turned the ball over SIX TIMES. That is just unacceptable.
Judah Mintz: C+
This was about as classic of a Judah Mintz game as it gets. The flashes were there and he was able to score in double figures, but the issues that have held Mintz back were clearest tonight. He turned the ball over a number of times and complained throughout the entire game. You can absolutely make the argument that Mintz had a right to complain after getting knocked around but a technical foul in a game like this just can’t happen. Mintz had a chance to prove why he should have been first team all-ACC and didn’t.

Demolition of dilapidated former Syracuse Developmental Center to start soon (PS; $; Boyer)
A 600,000-square-foot eyesore on a West Side Syracuse hill should be gone by the end of the year.
The city of Syracuse has selected a Utica-based demolition company to knock down the former Syracuse Developmental Center to clear a site for a project that will bring 500 units of newly constructed affordable housing. City officials expect the contractor will have the site fenced off and equipment mobilized by the end of this month, with demolition work beginning in April.
The winning bid of $10.2 million was far below the $29 million in state funding that Gov. Kathy Hochul committed to the city to cover demolition costs and infrastructure development at the site, which is adjacent to the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. The size of the bid means considerable state funds will be available for the city to build out water and sewer lines, access roads, sidewalks, landscaping and street lighting along site access roads.
“This gives us breathing room,” said Eric Ennis, Syracuse’s deputy commissioner of business development.
Ritter & Paratore Contracting Inc. submitted the lowest of nine demolition bids opened in early January, but that did not automatically mean it would get the contract. City staff did an extensive review of the bids to determine which was the “lowest responsible” proposal to make sure the company’s plan was realistic and that it had the resources and experience to do the work correctly.
After several weeks of review, Ritter & Paratore passed muster and a contract was signed.
Because the SDC buildings are set back far from South Wilbur Avenue, residents should not expect disruptions such as road closures, Ennis said. In addition, the city will have a third-party environmental firm on site monitoring air quality to make sure the neighborhood is safe.
Ritter & Paratore has experience with several big demolition projects in Syracuse.
It’s largest city job came in 2013, when it did demolition work at the former Kennedy Square public housing project on the city’s Near East Side.
In 2016, the company tore down a partially collapsed five-story building at 331 S. Salina St. downtown as part of an emergency demolition ordered by the city. Four years earlier, it knocked down the former Otisca Building that had once been a brewery on Butternut Street on the North Side. Ritter & Paratore also did an emergency demolition in 2010 on a North State Street building that partially collapsed and forced the temporary closure of a section of Interstate 81.

Syracuse alum to host 2024 Olympics opening ceremony with 2 newcomers (PS; $; Herbert)
Syracuse University alumnus Mike Tirico will host the Olympics opening ceremony for the fourth time in a row, joined by two newcomers to the international sporting event.
Tirico revealed Tuesday on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” that he will host NBC’s broadcast coverage of the 2024 Paris Olympic Opening Ceremony on July 26 alongside former NFL star Peyton Manning and TV host/singer Kelly Clarkson. It will be the first time the Hall of Fame quarterback and former “American Idol” winner participate in the Olympics broadcast.
“Peyton hosted the Country Music Awards. Kelly’s one of the greatest of all time. So the three of us are going to do an album,” Tirico joked to late-night host Jimmy Fallon before announcing the Summer Olympics coverage team.
According to NBC, the Paris games’ opening ceremony will be the first of its kind, held outside of a stadium on a nearly four-mile stretch along the Seine River in the French capital. The Parade of Nations will feature athletes on boats, passing hundreds of thousands of spectators and landmarks before climaxing at the iconic Eiffel Tower.
The 2024 Olympics opening ceremony will start Friday, July 26, at 7:30 p.m. local time in Paris, or 1:30 p.m. ET. The games will be broadcast on NBC and the Peacock streaming service.
Tirico said that this year’s Olympic medalists will receive special gold, silver or bronze medals that each include “a little piece of the Eiffel Tower in it.” Tirico said early favorites include gymnast Simone Biles and the U.S. track-and-field, basketball and soccer teams.
Tirico also invited Fallon to do NBC’s coverage of the Olympics closing ceremony, plus played “Olympictionary” with Manning and Clarkson.
