The Recruiting 'Battle' Duke Wants to Win (balldurham.com; Sweet)

Fresh off Team USA gold, Coach K is back at Duke gearing up for the upcoming season and beyond. On his agenda, making up for lost time on therecruiting trail.Accompanied by assistants Jeff Capel and Jon Scheyer, Coach K paid a visit to New Jersey’s Gill St. Bernard School, home of highly sought after 2016 recruit,Tyus Battle.

At age 11 Battle earned his nickname, Kid Mamba, because Kobe Bryant is his favorite player and people think he plays a little like the Black Mamba. Unlike Kobe though, going straight to the NBA out of high school isn’t an option for the 6’6, 180 pound shooting guard. That is very good news for Coach K and the Blue Devils.
According to Adam Zagoria of
ZagsBlogs.com, Gill head coach, Mergin Sina said Duke had a very “impressive presentation.” “You get a guy like that coming into Gill, obviously he’s a legendary coach. He was really good. He knew Tyus to a ’T,’ which always helps. He had a good evaluation of Tyus. He explained all the things that he could work on to get better, and some of the things that are going to make him successful.”

Syracuse University Makes Playboy's Top 10 Party Schools List for the First Time (PS; Herbert)

The Princeton Review isn't the only publication that thinks Syracuse University students are partying more these days.
Playboy has placed Syracuse on its list of the top 10 party schools for the first time in the adult magazine's nine-year history of ranking colleges. SU just barely made the cut at No. 10, inching towards the top spot the
Princeton Review gave the Central New York school earlier this year.

"Orange is the new booze," according to Playboy:
"Syracuse kids bleed orange as much as they bleed booze and are shameless in their exploits.
Sex in the library? Recommended. Braving the hedonism of MayFest, the annual spring marathon of music and drinking? Advisable," the magazine wrote. "And with a respectable football team in the Atlantic Coast Conference, drinking beer for breakfast on Saturday is common practice."

Oprah with Mary Nelson

How Oprah Winfrey Came to Syracuse's South Side to Donate $100K (PS; Tobin)

Oprah Winfrey stunned Syracuse's South Side Monday afternoon when she made a surprise visit to Mary Nelson's Youth Center and wrote the center a $100,000 check.

Neighbors along South Salina Street and friends of the center whooped and cheered as news spread of Winfrey's donation, made on the spot from her black SUV limousine.
Winfrey's earlier visit of the day, to Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, took months to negotiate and solidify. Her visit to the youth center was shaped over just four days by Nelson and Winfrey - who each recognized opportunity in circumstances unfolding before them.
