Syracuse Alumni Team Adds Demetris Nichols to Roster, Could Add Andy Rautins and Paul Harris as Well (sujuiceonline.com; Cheng)

The Syracuse Alumni Team has received a commitment from former wing Demetris Nichols for The Basketball Tournament this summer.

The Tournament is a 5-on-5, single-elimination, winner-take-all basketball tournament with a grand prize of $1 million. A team can only become eligible by voting for their team on the TBT website. Currently, the Syracuse roster features Josh Pace, Brandon Reese, Eric Devendorf, Rick Jackson, Donte Greene, Hakim Warrick and Baye Moussa Keita.

“We’re definitely not done yet. We got a commitment from Demetris Nichols as well,” Devendorf said. “We’ll probably try to get a couple of more guys, maybe two more guys. Maybe Paul Harris or Andy Rautins. The voting doesn’t end until June 1, so we have time to figure that out.”

Nichols played at Syracuse from 2003-07, and was named First Team All-Big East in his senior season. He played with three NBA teams including the Cavaliers, Bulls and Knicks before beginning his international career in the 2009 season.

Despite the voting being open for another six weeks, the Syracuse team was the first to receive the necessary votes to become eligible. SU was placed in the northeast region and will play on July 17 -19 in Philadelphia.

Help the TBT Syracuse Alumni Team Design Their Uniforms (TNIAAM; Keeley)

So you know by now that a team consisting of Syracuse Orange basketball alumni are taking part in The Basketball Tournament where they'll try to win a $1M purse. The twist of the tournament is that it's heavily reliant on fan support, to the point where a team only qualifies to play if they receive enough votes.

The SU team was the first squad to qualify based on how much fans came out to support them. Now we've got a chance to go to the next level. Syracuse fans can have a say in the actual uniforms the team will wear on the court.

Team GM and former SU team manager Kevin Belbey reached out to let us know that once the team reached 1,000 Fans, they will be allowed to customize their own uniforms. The team currently sits at 980, so that should come to pass pretty soon. When it does, they're gonna need some suggestions.

Basically, it's a legit chance to design your dream Syracuse uniform and actually see it happen.

Here's some examples of custom uniforms worn last season to give you an idea of what's possible:

How Albany, Not Syracuse, Got a Homeland Security College (capitalnewyork.com; Bakeman)

A couple of years ago, State Senator John DeFrancisco approached the Cuomo administration with an idea to establish the nation’s first college specializing in homeland security.

The Syracuse Republican pitched the college as a joint venture between SUNY and Syracuse University, which boasts well-regarded schools of law and public policy.

Fast forward to January 2015, when Cuomo proposed allocating $15 million in the state budget to build such a school—in Albany.

“I have no idea what the hell was on his mind at the time,” DeFrancisco told Capital. “What his reasons for it are, you are going to have to ask him, but it was very disappointing to say the least.”

The recently approved state budget did, in fact, include the funds for a new College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity at SUNY’s University at Albany. A new building that will house the college is slated for construction on the W. Averell Harriman State Office Building Campus, a 330-acre plot near UAlbany in the capital city’s uptown that houses 16 state agency buildings.
