Three Takeaways From SU Loss to UNC (TNIAAM; Burke)

In Jim Boeheim's return from a nine-game suspension, Syracuse suffered an 84-73 loss to North Carolina on Saturday, dropping to 0-4 in the ACC in the process.

Here are three takeaways from SU's loss:

1. Cooney, continuing to heat up, can do that

Even as Syracuse has struggled, Trevor Cooney has begun to heat up in recent weeks. In the five games leading up to Saturday's contest, he shot 45.2% from 3. Still, Cooney hadn't yet had a breakthrough performance, having not eclipsed 19 points in a single game this season.

But that changed Saturday night, when he scored a game-high 27 points and went 5-of-12 from beyond the arc. At times, it was almost as if he were single-handedly keeping Syracuse in the game, making a number of shots that helped swing momentum in the Orange's favor.

Cooney's 27-point outing marked his best scoring performance since tallying 28 points in last year's contest at North Carolina, though it's worth noting he took five more shots in that game than he did Saturday.

Cooney entered the season expecting his shooting percentage to go up significantly, given that he would be surrounded by several other 3-point threats, something that would — theoretically, at least — free him up for more open looks. After a slow start to the season, he's starting to achieve those expectations; following Saturday's game, he is now shooting 36.3% from 3.

Back From Suspension, JB Looks Forward (the juice; Nick Salamone)

Emerging from the tunnel to a loud standing ovation from a crowd of 26,811, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim was home.

After serving his nine-game NCAA imposed suspension, Boeheim made his first coaching appearance since Dec. 2. Energy in the Dome was high as fans welcomed their coach back from exile.

Despite the outpouring of emotion from the fans, Boeheim was all business as he first waved to the crowd before greeting UNC head coach Roy Williams.

For Boeheim, the suspension was old news and part of a past that he is not dwelling upon. Making it clear that he was not going to get into discussing the team’s performance during his absence, Boeheim stymied any attempt to ask about his month away from the program.

“I’m done,” Boeheim said. “I’m only thinking about basketball. That’s it.”

In what must have been a frustrating return to the bench for the veteran coach, Syracuse dropped its fourth straight game in ACC conference play, losing to UNC 84-73. For most of the game, SU contained the No. 6 team in the nation, ending the first half tied at 33-33.

Iconic Bull Still Stands After Steakhouse Burns in Verona (PS; Moses)

The large steer that guards the front yard of the Stampede Steakhouse in Verona is still standing after an early morning fire destroyed the iconic restaurant.

The Verona Fire Department responded just after 4 a.m. to find a fully involved structure fire at Stampede Steakhouse, the former Joel's Steakhouse, at the corner of routes 31 and 365, according to The Oneida Daily Dispatch.

The restaurant was a total loss, according to the report.

Many customers took to the restaurant's Facebook page to grieve the loss of what many called their "favorite restaurant." Many customers shared the same wish: "We hope you rebuild."

Jim Boehiem: “We’re doing a lot of good things, but not enough good things to get wins.”

Jim Boehiem on Roberson: He’s got to take advantage of opportunities. Only just recently discovered jump shot.

Jesse Dougherty ‏@dougherty_jesse
Boeheim said the last two games were the first time in Roberson's college career that he consistently made jumper. Good sign for Orange.

If Moyer wants to recruit successfully he needs to hit the gym and take advice from Coleman, the first Coleman that is.
