Welcome to Saint Erho's Day!

The legend of St. Urho originated in Northern Minnesota in the 1950s. However, there are differing opinions as to whether it began with the fables created by Sulo Havumaki of Bemidji, or the tongue-in-cheek tales told byRichard Mattson of Virginia. Either way, the legend has grown among North Americans of Finnish descent to the point where St. Urho is known and celebrated across the United States and Canada, and even in Finland.

St. Urho's Day is celebrated on March 16th, the day prior to the better known feast of some minor saint from Ireland, who was alleged to have driven the snakes from that island.

The legend of St. Urho says he chased the grasshoppers out of ancient Finland, thus saving the grape crop and the jobs of Finnish vineyard workers. He did this by uttering the phrase: "Heinäsirkka, heinäsirkka, mene täältä hiiteen" (roughly translated: "Grasshopper, grasshopper, go to Hell!"). His feast is celebrated by wearing the colors Royal Purple and Nile Green. St. Urho is nearly always represented with grapes and grasshoppers as part of the picture.

SU Spring Football Preview: A Look at the Linebackers (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Recruited for a blitz-heavy scheme, Syracuse's linebackers now have to completely change their role in the defense.

With all the hubbub about the Syracuse Orange basketball team making the NCAA Tournament, you might have forgotten that the FOOTBALL team is still in spring practice. I can't necessarily blame you for letting it slip your mind. I just don't agree with it, as you may have figured.

We continue going position-by-position to talk about the pressing issues and questions that may plague us throughout the spring.

Nearly everybody from last year, which helps. Starters Zaire Franklin,Marqez Hodge and Parris Bennett are all back this spring, though Hodge has been missed time with an injury over the past month. There's some additional experience returning with Kyle Kleinberg and Alryk Perry, plus walk-on junior Terell Drayton. Redshirt freshmen Troy Henderson and Shyheim Cullen are also on campus and participating in practice this spring.

3 Star RB Ivory Kelly-Martin (IL) Interested in Syracuse (writingillini.com;Woodcock)

First reported by Beth Long of Rivals, Ivory Kelly-Martin lists Illinois as one of this six teams he has on his mind right now. He goes on to explain to Long a little more about his upcoming schedule.

“Some of the schools that are up there are Arizona, Iowa, Illinois, Syracuse, Western Michigan and New Mexico,” Kelly-Martin said. “But I still have a lot of research to do. I’m also still working on visits as they come up because of my track schedule which is going to make it a little harder especially with schools that are farther away.”

According to Rivals, IKM is a 3-star running back out of Oswego, Illinois. He is rated as the 35th best running back in the nation and the 8th best player in the state of Illinois.

From what I have read and seen on IKM tape he looks to be a little underrated. As a running back he looks like he is patient through the hole and when he makes a decision he automatically hits another gear.

Tri-West RB/LB Peyton Hendershot Has Offers From UC, SU, Ball State, BGU, UM(o), WMU and Illinois State (indystar.com; Glascow)

When your basketball roster is full of football players, intensity is rarely an issue, except maybe when it goes too far.

Such is the case with Tri-West (22-6), which will face Evansville Bosse (18-10) in Saturday’s Seymour semistate for a berth in the Class 3A championship.

Nine of the 12 Bruins also play football, including junior forward Peyton Hendershot, a receiver/linebacker who has offers from Cincinnati, Syracuse, Ball State, Bowling Green, Miami (Ohio), Western Michigan and Illinois State.

“We have a bunch of characters, and it can get crazy any night because you can’t really control them,” said Hendershot, who won a football state title with Tri-West in 2014. “But if we’re all zoned in and juiced up, there’s no one who can stop us.”

Brebeuf might agree following last Saturday’s regional final at Greencastle. The Braves dominated No. 2 Park Tudor earlier in the day, but Tri-West ran them off the floor in a 14-point blowout.

QB Starter Biggest Question Mark for ND Entering Spring Football (chicagotribune.,com; Skrbina)

As if having a pair of quarterbacks fighting for a starting role in Malik Zaire and DeShone Kizer wasn't enough heading into Notre Dame's spring practice, coach Brian Kelly added a third name to the ledger Tuesday.

"All eyes would be on the quarterback position," Kelly said. "I think that's an understatement.

"We really like Brandon Wimbush as well."

Based on game experience, Kizer enters practice Wednesday as the front-runner to earn the nod. However, Kelly cautioned that Zaire, who missed 11-plus games after shattering his right ankle against Virginia in Week 2, is every bit healthy enough to challenge Kizer.

Kizer started 11 games and threw for 2,884 yards and 21 touchdowns against 10 interceptions while running for 520 yards and 10 more scores.

Then there's Wimbush, who earned some mop-up snaps last season but has what Kelly called the strongest arm on the team.

"We'd love to be able to come out of the spring with a No. 1 quarterback," Kelly said. "We know the nature of guys we have here are probably not going to let that happen.

Embattled Syracuse Mayor Minor Hires Albany PR Consultant (PS; Knauss)

Amid high-profile verbal battles over the Syracuse Inner Harbor and other issues, Mayor Stephanie Miner has quietly hired a $175-an-hour political consultant from Albany to bolster her administration's public relations team.

Sherman Jewett, 44, a veteran Democratic operative, will work as a part-time consultant to the city to fill a void left by the December retirement of Tim Carroll, Miner's director of mayoral initiatives. Jewett will remain in Albany.

He started with the city in late January, but Jewett's hiring is not widely known even at city hall. Miner awarded Jewett a no-bid contract through an obscure arm of city government, the Syracuse Urban Renewal Agency, which Miner controls without oversight from the city council.

Several councilors said they were unaware of Jewett's role until contacted by a reporter today.

Alexander Marion, the mayor's press secretary, said contracting through the urban renewal agency "enabled us to hire a consultant in an expedient, efficient manner.'' A normal city contract would be subject to approval by the Common Council.

Despite Jewett's pricey hourly rate, as a part-time consultant he will earn less than the full-time mayoral aide he replaces. Carroll had a salary of roughly $94,000 plus benefits.
