Welcome to National Deep Dish Pizza Day!

Also known as Chicago-style pizza today we celebrate National Deep Dish Pizza Day. Deep dish pizza was created in Chicago in 1943 by Pizzeria Uno’s founder Ike Sewell. Deep dish pizza has a buttery cornmeal crust than can be as tall as 3 inches on the sides. That way the crust acts like a bowl to hold in all the yummy ingredients. The pizza is made upside down so the cheese goes in first, then toppings, then sauce. Popular Chicago deep dish restaurants include Pizzeria Uno (and Due) Gino's East (pictured above), and Lou Malnati's.

Oswego East's Ivory Kelly-Martin Chooses Iowa (chicagotribune.com; Narang)

...
Kelly-Martin joins a strong contingent of Chicago-area recruits to commit to Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz in the past year. Current seniors who signed with Iowa in February include Phillips linebacker Amani Jones, Naperville Central receiver Emmanuel Rugamba, Crystal Lake Central defensive end Romeo McKnight, Niles North running back Barrington Wade and Sycamore linebacker Nick Niemann.

A.J. Epenesa of Edwardsville, the top-rated defensive end in the national junior class by 247Sports.com, committed to Iowa on Jan. 17.

Kelly-Martin helped Nazareth win state championships the past two seasons. In the 2015 title game against Lincoln-Way West, he rushed for 170 yards and four touchdowns, including a title-game record 96-yard scoring run.

Kelly-Martin, whose other offers included Illinois, Wisconsin, Northern Illinois, Arizona and Syracuse, had 190 carries for 1,972 yards and 33 touchdowns as a junior.

LeBlanc said he could tell Kelly-Martin was leaning toward Iowa after receiving an offer during an unofficial visit to Iowa City on March 6. Kelly-Martin visited Iowa for another unofficial visit this weekend.

"He was more excited about the Iowa visit than some of the other schools that he visited," LeBlanc said. "I knew he was going there this weekend, so when I saw him this (afternoon), he had a big smile on his face.

Kentucky Assistant Andy Buh Will be Named Maryland's New Defensive Coordinator (washingtonpost.com; Stubbs)

Kentucky assistant coach Andy Buh will take over as Maryland’s defensive coordinator, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Maryland officials have yet to confirm the hiring of Buh, who served as outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Kentucky. He would replace Scott Shafer, who left his post as defensive coordinator for personal reasons on Friday. That came just three months after Shafer had become one of the first hirings by new Maryland head coach DJ Durkin. With spring practice entering its fourth week, Durkin is expected to address the media regarding Buh following Tuesday morning’s practice in College Park.

At their request, this network is being blocked from this site. was the first to report the news of Buh’s departure from Kentucky on Monday.

A native of Escondido, Calif., Buh played for two seasons at Nevada before starting his college coaching career at a graduate assistant there in 1997. He has since enjoyed a quick and steady rise as a strong defensive mind throughout the national coaching ranks over the past two decades. Durkin and Buh are tied by their time spent together as defensive assistants at Stanford for three seasons beginning in 2007. Buh spent his final two seasons there as co-defensive coordinator under then-Cardinal coach Jim Harbaugh. Buh then spent stints as a linebackers coach at Wisconsin and as a defensive coordinator at Nevada and California, before joining Mark Stoops’s staff at Kentucky prior to last season.

The move follows Friday’s stunning news that Shafer, the former Syracuse head coach who in January had earned the most lucrative contract of any coordinator on Durkin’s staff, was stepping down in the middle of spring practice. Buh will become the fourth defensive coordinator in College Park dating back to last February, when Brian Stewart stepped down and accepted an assistant coaching job at Nebraska. He was followed by Keith Dudzinski, who was promoted prior to former Maryland Coach Randy Edsall’s firing in October but not retained by Durkin as he assembled his defensive staff in December and January.

Purdue Embraces Virtual Reality Training for QBs (wfla.com; AP)

Purdue quarterbacks have been using a different type of training technique lately.

“When we get to do reps in the comfort of my own living room, like a live game rep, it’s only going to increase our efficiency and decision-making when we’re on the process of being on the field,” said Purdue quarterback David Blough.

Quarterbacks on Purdue’s football team have been utilizing what new technology has to offer. Virtual reality goggles are the latest form of training for the players.

Quarterback coach Tim Lester has used the goggles when he was coaching at Syracuse.

“We used them last year at Syracuse, it made a big difference,” Lester said. “We had a young freshman, a true freshman, that had to play due to injury and saw huge improvement for him.”

Once the quarterback puts the goggles on, there are four different quarters the players can choose from. Each quarter has 20 plays that rotate each time the quarter is played. From that point, it’s as if they’re in the game.

How Syracuse University Went From a Dry Campus to One of the Nation's Top Party Schools (DO; Gedetsis)

A tall blond girl stumbles toward the Carrier Dome. Her arms wrapped around two of her friends, she cocks her head back and screams, “We are the No. 1 party school!”

No one blinks an eye.

This wasn’t always a common sight. In the 1870s, consuming alcohol off campus could get you expelled. Over its 146-year history, Syracuse University has transitioned from a strictly dry campus to one of the nation’s top party schools.

Michael Hevel, a professor at the University of Arkansas who is currently working on a book about the history of alcohol on college campuses, said he suspects less has changed than people may think. He said he has found that despite campus rules, drinking has always been part of campus life, just not one in full view.

“I don’t really think there’s too much new about the party school atmosphere,” Hevel said. “I think that one of the things that history shows is that it’s not a new problem. It’s something educators have dealt with for a long time.”
