Welcome to Sun Screen Protection Day!

Sun Screen Day educates and brings awareness to the importance of using sunscreen to protect yourself and your children from harmful UV rays from the sun. This day is held on May 27th, just in advance of the summer and vacation season.

Ultraviolet rays from the sun is a serious risk to your health. With the steady depletion of the ozone layer above the earth, more and stronger UV rays get through.

Overexposure to the sun can cause a number of health problems. It can cause skin cancer, and sunspots. It can also result in premature aging of your skin.

De La Salle's Allen Stritzinger One of State's Top Undecided Recruits (freep.com; Dorsey)

At the Spartan Camp, it is very possible Stritzinger will workout at multiple positions. Defensive coordinator Harlon Barnett will take him through the paces and see whether cornerback or safety is the position he has the most potential to excel at in college. Barnett is very thorough and hands on when it comes to the secondary. Strizinger could also get a look on offense.

Stritzinger has been to MSU on several occasions, and the success the program has had under the direction of head coach Mark Dantonio is something he likes. Playing for a disciplined program that routinely competes for Big Ten championship is something he wants to do in college.

"The program at Michigan State is very established and they run things smooth," Stritzinger said. "I have had a great time there (visiting)."

While Stritzinger could get a Michigan State scholarship with a strong camp performance, do not expect him to make a decision soon. As of now, he is looking to let the process play out and focus on his senior year before he makes a decision.

In addition to football, Strizinger excels in track. He is one of the top hurdlers in Michigan and has qualified for the State meet in both the 110M and 300M events. Last weekend Stritzinger, won the Catholic Title in the 300M with a sub 40-second time.

Key Grad Transfer DE Gabe Sherrod DElays Arrival to July (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Delaware State defensive end Gabe Sherrodannounced back in February that he'd be transferring to the Syracuse Orange football program for his final year of eligibility. So since then, we've just been playing the waiting game of when he'll sign.

Based on a report by Syracuse.com's Stephen Bailey this morning, it appears we'll be waiting a little bit longerthan initially hoped.

As Sherrod told Bailey, he's completing one final Delaware State course online in early summer, and will arrive at Syracuse in time for the July 3 summer session. Assuming all goes well there, potential crisis easily averted for the Orange.

Sherrod, as we've detailed before, could be an immediate difference-marker for the Syracuse defense, which looks to retool after a season full of struggles. They'll do so with an inexperienced, thin front line no matter what. But obviously the 6-foot-4, 255-pound Sherrod helps quite a bit. The Maryland (Perryville) native was second in the FCS last year with 25 tackles-for-loss, and shows a ton of speed when on the outside. He has a quick first step, long arms and can even sniff out screens while playing in the flat. In short, he's exactly what SU needs.

2016 SU Opponent Preview: Wake Forest (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

We're less than 100 days from the start of theSyracuse Orange football season. That's excellent news for us, since it actually makes season previews a bit more tangible now. Lately, we've been exerting energy previewing our opponents, which are... yup, still incredibly difficult. Each week (roughly), we'll take a look at a team on Syracuse's 2016 schedule. Today, we continue with the:

Wake Forest Demon Deacons
School: Wake Forest University
Mascot: Demon Deacons
#BRAND Slogan: "You Will. We Will. Wake Will."
Alternate #BRAND Slogan Suggestions: "No, really. We won the ACC Football Championship in 2006." "Wake Up Our Athletic Department."
Recommended Blog: Blogger So Dear
Conference: ACC

Coach: Dave Clawson, 3rd year. Since arriving in Winston-Salem, Clawson has seemingly improved the talent level of the Deacons, but those results haven't really shown up in the win-loss record. Despite making strides, especially on the defensive end, Wake is still just 6-18 since his tenure began, with just two league wins in that timeframe (by a combined score of 9-3...). While the Deacs are a difficult job, we'll see if it's difficult enough to withstand a potential third straight losing year for Clawson.

How Will State Acquire Properties Needed for I-81 Project? (PS; McAndrew)

New York is going to have to acquire private properties in Syracuse no matter which option the state picks for replacing the Interstate 81 viaduct and redesigning the interchange with I-690.

If it rebuilds a wider, straighter elevated section of I-81 running through Syracuse, the state Department of Transportation has estimated New York may have to acquire and knock down up to 30 to 35 buildings.

If the DOT recommends replacing the viaduct with a street-level boulevard, it has estimated the state may have to buy 5 to 10 buildings.

A tunnel option - which DOT says it is also developing for consideration - would also likely require the state to buy properties, but DOT has not determined how many, DOT spokesman Gary Holmes said Thursday.

So how will the state go about acquiring these properties, what rights do property owners have, and how much is this going to cost taxpayers?

The department will hold a series of public meetings next week where I-81 Viaduct Project Director Mark Frechette and Eileen Moore, from the DOT's Right-of-Way group, will provide general information on the process involved in identifying, inspecting and acquiring property rights for transportation projects...
