Welcome to National Macaroon Day!

National Macaroon Day honors the Macaroon, a flourless cookie. It is popular among the Jewish community, especially during Passover, when Jews can not cook with flour. But, the popularity of the Macaroon doesn't stop there. It is also enjoyed around the world.

Macaroons are made from ground nuts and leavened egg whites. Coconut and potato starch is common in Macaroon recipes. Macaroons were believed to have been first made in an Italian monastery in 1792. While monks are well known for their vows of silence, they just couldn't keep quiet about this tasty treat.

Celebrate National Macaroon Day by baking and eating macaroons. If your schedule is tight today, stop by a bakery and select some for both work and for home.

Orange Watch: The 2016-17 Guide to Syracuse Orange Athletics Postseason Locations (the juice; Bierman)

Item: With the school year over and summer conditioning sessions underway for many Syracuse athletes on campus after one of the most successful ‘Cuse sports calendars in university history, we take a positive, upbeat look at the best-case scenarios for the “Big Three” programs next season. If Dino Babers can coax a minimum of six wins out of his first SU football edition to earn the school’s first bowl bid since 2013, if Jim Boeheim can continue to close out his career in style with a multi-week NCAA run, and if John Desko can get the Orange back to the Final Four also first the first time since 2013, then start planning, here’s the logistics of how those postseason events play out.

Syracuse Football

For 2016, the ACC has 10 tier one and tier two bowl games, plus a couple of secondary choice bowls, so if Babers and the Orange qualify for an extra game in his initial season, there will be no shortage of options where the conference and its TV partners can send SU for its bowl game.

The ACC tie-in games (other than the College Football Playoff series) are being played the week post-Christmas, with three games kicking off play Dec. 26 involving a league team in St. Petersburg (St. Petersburg), Detroit (Quick Lane) and Shreveport, La (Independence).

The next day, Dec. 27, is the Military Bowl at Annapolis, followed on Dec. 28 by the New Era (New York) and the Russell Athletic (Orlando). The Belk Bowl (Charlotte) is Dec. 29 followed by the Sun Bowl (El Paso) and Orange Bowl (Miami Gardens) on the 30th.

The Jan. 2 Gator Bowl (Jacksonville) is also in play this season, but final matchups will be determined after the four CFP teams are selected.

After a trip to the national semifinals for the sixth time in school history, what do you do for an encore? Why repeat the feat, and eye a trip to suburban Phoenix the site of the 2017 Final Four, of course.

SU Scholarship Situation Heading Into 2016 (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

We're always talking about Syracuse Orangebasketball scholarships around here, but rarely dive into football. SU football gets 85 scholarships to hand out each season, and recently, they've fallen short of that number more often than not due to attrition, under-recruiting, etc.

They'll do so again in 2016, it seems.

At current, Syracuse has 82 scholarships committed, if you include the incoming 2016 kids, plus grad transfers Amba Etta-Tawo (already signed) and Gabe Sherrod (will sign for July). That's four under the limit. Of those 82, 14 are expected to run out of eligibility this fall. That leaves just 17 slots open for the recruiting class of 2017.

Attrition, of course, always plays a part. And since we've already seen plenty of it since Dino Babers arrived, we'll probably see more still between now and National Signing Day next February. But as of right now, the Orange simply don't have a ton of roster spots to deal with if they want to address the burning depth issues on the defensive line and in the secondary. The program's also short-handed at QB. All of these positions need to be dealt with, but perhaps at the cost of another position given the low number of spots.

And that figure could still potentially get lower, too.

Bomb Explodes After Prison Guard Finds Package at His House (dailycaller.com; Harper)

A New York prison guard was severely injured when a bomb went off at his home Sunday.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the corrections officer, who has not been identified, “was severely injured and received serious burns to his body upon opening a suspicious package at his home in Oneida County.” Authorities said a package was left by the mailbox at his home in Floyd. When he opened it Sunday morning, it exploded.

“I heard the loud boom, and I was scared,” resident Patricia Westcott told The Associated Press. “It did sound like a bomb.”

The man, 52, works at the New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

I am SO hoping all the alums buy in, in a big way. I know some are not on board yet.

Just out of curiosity if you feel comfortable answering, is it because of the Hicks situation that some are not all on board yet? Or simply taking a wait and see approach?

The Hicks thing could be one. The so-called 'running off' of recruits/commits might be another. And as you say, I think some may be taking a wait and see approach. Mixed bag, really. We'll see how he approaches and includes the alumni. Pugh was a good (public) start. No idea what reaching out he has done privately.
