Welcome to National Bourbon Day!

While bourbon whiskey has its roots in Kentucky, and continues to be primarily produced there, it is now manufactured in distilleries all over the United States. Manufacturers must meet the following requirements in order to advertise their whiskey product as "bourbon":

It must be produced in the U.S. from a grain mixture (called "mash") made up of at least 51 percent corn. It must be distilled to a maximum strength of 160 proof, bottled at a strength of at least 80 proof, and barreled for aging at no more than 125 proof. It must be aged in new, charred oak barrels. To qualify as "straight bourbon," the spirits must meet the above requirements as well as being aged for at least two years and containing no added coloring, flavoring or other spirits.

Don Chaney Jr. is just the third 8th grader Dino Babers offered; another won the Heisman Trophy (PS; Mink)

There will be many more Syracuse football recruits to write about in the coming months, let alone the coming years.

But there was one more interesting nugget I wanted to pass along regarding Class of 2020 running back Don Chaney Jr., the eighth grader from Miami offered by Syracuse last month.

Chaney was just the third eighth grader Syracuse football coach Dino Babers offered in his 30-plus year career.

Who were the previous two?

One won a Heisman Trophy (despite what the NCAA acknowledges).

The other was a four-star running back who signed with Oklahoma, had a productive four-year career and signed as an undrafted free agent with the Denver Broncos.

Babers offered Reggie Bush out of Helix High School in La Mesa, Calif., when he was an assistant coach at Arizona during the 1998-1999 school year.

Syracuse Football Recruiting: 2017 RB C.J. Holmes Lists Orange in Top Seven (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Over the weekend, 2017 Connecticut (Cheshire Academy) running back C.J. Holmes released his top-seven schools on Twitter. The Syracuse Orange were included on the 4-star talent's shortlist:

Joining the Orange on the list above were your typical heavyweights of college football: Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Tennessee and UCLA. Obviously SU will have their work cut out for them if they hope to land the skilled back.

As 2017 QB commit Tommy DeVito revealed, however, the Orange do have a secret weapon: him.

Since pledging to Syracuse, DeVito's been working on Holmes and others to try and convince them to come up to SU. While the deal's far from "sealed" on DeVito or any of his buds here, it certainly helps to have some help (especially from a quarterback) landing players like Holmes and Eddie Lewis, among others.

Syracuse Football 2016 Preview: Ranking Top Five Opposing Quarterbacks (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Top Five Opposing Quarterbacks

1. Deshaun Watson, Clemson Tigers

Damn, I wanted to find a way to way to put someone else up top, but it's virtually impossible given how good Watson was as just a sophomore in 2015 -- and how good he could be in 2016. Leading Clemson to theCollege Football Playoff National Championship last year, Watson threw for over 4,100 yards and ran for another 1,100, to go with 47 total scores. With another season under his belt and another top recruiting class incoming for the Tigers, it's difficult to envision a step backwards (yes, even from these astronomical figures). Watson finished third in Heisman Trophy voting in 2015, and comes into 2016 as one of the early favorites. The Tigers will go as far as he'll take them.

2. DeShone Kizer/Malik Zaire, Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The above may seem like cheating, but the Irish really can't go wrong with either of these options, even if they haven't decided which of them will be under center this fall. Zaire looked like a Heisman hopeful early in 2015, and Kizer, though it took him a few games to get consistent, could also play the part if the end of the season was any indication. Both can run, Kizer's shown himself able to refine his accuracy (ended the year at 63 percent) and most importantly, both know the offense already. My money's on Kizer, but that's really just guesswork right now.

As Syracuse hospital's losses continue, new owner pledges to invest $60M (PS; Mulder)

St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center continued operating in the red during the nine month period ended March 31, reporting a loss of nearly $20 million, according to its parent company Trinity Health.

Trinity Health, a big Catholic health system which bought St. Joe's July 1, said in anunaudited quarterly report it will invest $60 million in St. Joe's over the next four years and may increase that amount to $90 million if the hospital meets certain operating goals.

Trinity said St. Joe's generated revenue of $495.5 million during the nine-month period, but its expenses exceeded revenue by $19.7 million.

Trinity reported revenue of $12.1 billion for the nine-month period, an increase of $1.5 billion, or 13.9 percent, compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. The acquisition of St. Joseph's and Saint Francis Care in Connecticut accounted for much of the increase.

It's 8:15am and I can already use a bourbon on bourbon day. And I hardly ever drink.
