Welcome to Flitch Day!

"A custom of giving a flitch of bacon to any married couple who would swear that neither of them, in a year and a day, either sleeping or waking, repented of their marriage." This custom turned into a celebrated holiday.

What is a Flitch?
A flitch is measurement of bacon, equaling half a pig. (Flitch = side)
In the United States: A side of unsliced bacon was once known as a flitch- it is now known as a slab. An individual slice of bacon is a slice or strip.
What is this Holiday for?
An old English custom from long ago eventually turned into the holiday called Flitch Day, which is celebrated on July 19th. Every year on this day, since about 1104, any married couple who could prove they had been faithful and loving to one another for one year was awarded half a pig, known as a flitch of bacon. However, very few couples would actually "bring home the bacon!"

Sources: ESPN-backed ACC Network set for '19 (ESPN; McMurphy)

The long-awaited ACC Network will launch by August 2019, according to league sources.

The Atlantic Coast Conference and ESPN have agreed to a 20-year deal and rights extension through the 2035-36 academic year, sources said.

The ACC also extended its conference grant of rights deal nine years through 2035-36, a source said.

The conference's grant of rights makes it untenable financially for a school to leave, guaranteeing in the 20 years of the deal that a school's media rights, including revenue, for all home games would remain with the ACC regardless of the school's affiliation.

The ACC's new grant of rights also automatically extends Notre Dame's contract with the conference as a member in all sports but football through 2035-36, a source said. If the Irish forgo football independence in the next 20 years, they are contracted to join the ACC.

Rutgers vs. Syracuse, Pitt or BC? Chris Ash 'all for' regional rivalry (nj.com; Dunleavy)

Chris Ash did not shy away from teaming with a neighboring program during satellite camp season and he isn't afraid to schedule regional rivals in the future.

Rutgers has not played Boston College, Syracuse or Pittsburgh since those schools left the old Big East for the ACC. The coming season marks the third time in the last four years that Rutgers has opened the season on the West Coast.

"Regional rivalries – if we can find one – would be great," Ash told NJ Advance Media. "The travel out to Washington isn't necessarily a preference because it's a big trip, a hard trip."

Rutgers has future non-conference series arranged with Temple and Virginia Tech, but former coach Kyle Flood balked behind the scenes at a possible series with Syracuse.

Regional matchups can carry extra stakes because of recruiting crossover.

"If we could find a non-conference Power Five rivalry game that we could play that would excite fans and players, that would be great," Ash said. "Especially if it does not require long-distance travel like clear across the country does, I would be all for things like that."

Forecasting a Clemson-UNC rematch in ACC football title game (dailynews.com; Teel)

The top-heavy Atlantic Division, indecipherable Coastal and several national-caliber skill players figure to headline ACC football 2016. Now how to sort them on the ballot at this week’s preseason media gathering?

Much like Florida State with Jameis Winston in 2014, Clemson with Deshaun Watson is the natural prevailing story. Defending league champions, the Tigers have a returning first-team All-America quarterback in Watson and myriad talent elsewhere.

Since the ACC went to divisions in 2005, reporters attending the conference’s media days — we meet Thursday and Friday in Charlotte, N.C. — have picked Clemson or Florida State to win the Atlantic, and no other team has prevailed since Boston College in 2008.

Syracuse Needs To Give Dino Babers Ample Time - Today's U (todaysu.com; Holcomb)

As the cliche goes, the Sistine Chapel wasn’t finished in a day. Actually it took Michelangelo four years to paint the famous Sistine Chapel ceiling.

Syracuse should give new football coach Dino Babers just about as much time to re-build the Orange football program.

Babers has undeniably given Syracuse football some fresh life. For the first time in years, we are hearing about top three-star recruits choosing the Orange, and in some cases, they are even electing to play at Syracuse over perennial powerhouses such as Michigan and Michigan State. Three-star recruit Allen Stritzinger chose the Orange over both of those schools despite being from Michigan.

There’s even some excitement surrounding this year’s team. Running back Dontae Strickland appears to be on the verge of a breakout season and could be one of a few talented sophomores on the roster.

Fans can definitely contribute the new passion to Babers’ hiring. Coming from the coaching tree of Art Briles, Babers brings his fast-paced, up-tempo offense to the Carrier Dome. When he installed that type of offense at Bowling Green, it was both fun to play in and watch. Bowling Green finished fourth in yards per game and fifth in passing yards per contest last season. Quarterback Matt Johnson threw for 4,946 yards and 46 touchdowns a year ago.

State will spend $1.1 million to move Super DIRT Week to Oswego (PS; Moriarty)

Moving the five-day racing extravaganza Super DIRT Week to Oswego Speedway will cost New York taxpayers $1.1 million.

That's how much Empire State Development, the state's economic development office, will provide to help the speedway host the five-day event, which organizers say could attract up to 70,000 fans and competitors this fall.

The grant will be used to truck in 9,600 cubic yards of dirt to turn the speedway's 5/8-mile asphalt track off East Albany Street into a dirt track and then truck it out after the event, which is scheduled for Oct. 5 to 9.

The state's money also will pay for upgrades to the speedway's back grandstands (they're called the Lakeview Grandstands because you can see Lake Ontario from the top row); extending electrical utilities to an RV camping area across the street from the speedway; improving perimeter fencing, ticketing centers and facility lighting; and providing shuttles from offsite parking lots.

Man, one thing I sure miss living down here in Texas is super modified dirt racing. Used to go to Fonda Speedway almost every weekend during the racing season when I was a kid. Loved it.
