Welcome to Ada Lovelace Day!

Ada Lovelace Day was founded by Suw Charman-Anderson in 2009 and aims to raise the profile of women in science, technology, engineering and maths by encouraging people around the world to talk about the women whose work they admire. This international day of celebration helps people learn about the achievements of women in STEM, inspiring others and creating new role models for young and old alike.

The inspiration for Ada Lovelace Day came from psychologist Penelope Lockwood, who carried out a study which found that women need to see female role models more than men need to see male role models. “Outstanding women can function as inspirational examples of success,” she said, “illustrating the kinds of achievements that are possible for women around them. They demonstrate that it is possible to overcome traditional gender barriers, indicating to other women that high levels of success are indeed attainable.”

Who’s Ada?
Ada Lovelace is widely held to have been the first computer programmer. Close friends with inventor Charles Babbage, Lovelace was intrigued by his Analytical Engine and in 1842, she translated a description of it by italian mathematician Luigi Menabrea. Babbage asked her to expand the article, “as she understood [it] so well”, and this was when she wrote several early ‘computer programs’. Ada Lovelace died of cancer at 36, her potential tragically unfulfilled. Learn more about Ada…

After 19-point loss to Wake Forest, honeymoon period is over for Dino Babers (commentary) (PS; Bailey)

Facing a 3rd and 8 from Syracuse's own 8-yard line, trailing Wake Forest 14-9 on SU's last possession of the third quarter, head coach Dino Babers dialed up a trap to junior inside receiver Erv Philips.

Philips was stopped 3 yards short.

Had there been more than a couple hundred Orange fans among the brave crowd of 3,000 in BB&T Stadium on the edge of Hurricane Matthew on Saturday, well, their "boos" certainly would have been audible.

"It was just one of those situations where you're throwing the ball into that stuff and until the rain stopped, it really wasn't a high percentage (play)," Babers said after the game.

Babers called an extremely conservative game, especially for his standards, in the Orange's 28-9 loss to the Demon Deacons — SU's first defeat to WFU since entering the ACC in 2013. The Orange ran the ball 40 of 66 plays (this includes sophomore quarterback Eric Dungey's five sacks and a few scrambles), and after the game, Babers regretted not pounding the rock more in the first half.

Whether it was appropriate or not given the weather and a banged-up offensive line, the loss did more than solidify a bleak bowl outlook midway through the season. It marked the end of the honeymoon era in Babers' tenure.

Hokies try to keep one thing in mind as they move up rankings: success can be fleeting (roanoke.com; Bitter)

If he hadn’t become a football coach, Virginia Tech’s Justin Fuente probably would have followed a business path, so it’s no surprise that when he’s got time to crack open a book, he draws strategies from that world.

“According to business people I’ve read, whether it’s big corporations, you always continue to try to find ways to articulate their message and their culture,” Fuente said. “You can’t stop that. If you stop or relax or quit, then in my opinion, it begins to deteriorate.”

The Hokies, who vaulted up to No. 17 in the Associated Press poll and No. 19 in the coaches poll Monday, matching their highest ranking since right after the Ohio State win in 2014, are hoping to avoid any backslide after their hot start.

Last weekend’s 34-3 win in the rain at North Carolina validated their debut in the rankings, although Fuente is more concerned about Virginia Tech (4-1, 2-0 ACC) continuing to play like it has with a potential trap game at Syracuse (2-4, 0-2 ACC) on tap this Saturday at 3:45 p.m.

How will he address that? By reinforcing the message he and his coaching staff have preached since getting to Blacksburg.

“We try and articulate the message that those things are all fleeting,” Fuente said. “It truly is 12 one-game seasons. All those things can disappear if we don’t take care of our business.

“At least the way that it kind of rings the truth for me is the understanding of why we’re in this situation, the things that we’ve done. And if we stop doing things, then we’ll no longer find ourselves in this situation.”

Virginia Tech's Justin Fuente familiar with Syracuse attack (richmond.com; Barber)

Justin Fuente knows what to expect from Dino Babers’ offense at Syracuse. While at Memphis, Fuente coached against Babers’ Bowling Green team last season.

Fuente’s Tigers won a shootout 44-41 at Bowling Green, though the Falcons piled up 579 yards of offense.

He sees the same rapid-paced style of offense from Babers’ first Syracuse team.

“They’re from the Baylor tree of going fast, throwing the ball all over the yard,” Fuente said.

The Orange (2-4, 0-2 ACC) rank 12th in the nation in passing offense, averaging 336.3 yards per game through the air. They run 83.2 plays per game going into Saturday’s matchup with the No. 17 Hokies (4-1, 2-0).

“I think they could be pretty dangerous,” junior linebacker Andrew Motuapuaka said. “You’ve got to make sure you get lined up pretty quickly, tempo has to be on point and make sure we’re executing and getting them off the field as soon as possible.”

Syracuse Football: Early Scouting Report for Week 7 (insidetheloudhouse.com; Edsen Jr)

In Week 7 of the Syracuse (2-4) football season they return to the Carrier Dome for the first time in nearly two months. While their opponent the Virginia Tech Hokies (4-1) are on a three game winning streak.
The Syracuse football team is finding ways to lose to beatable opponents. Now they’re faced with the task of finding a way to beat a top-25 opponent in Virginia Tech.

The Orange haven’t been in the dome since the South Florida game on September 17th. Something the team will be hoping for is a raucous home crowd. Which hasn’t been the case all season for Syracuse.

The team is on pace to have the worst attendance at the dome in history. The odds are stacked against Syracuse to get an improbable win, but at least weather won’t be a factor.

Syracuse vs. VT depth chart: Fredericks exits doghouse (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

The Syracuse Orange depth chart finally seems to be catching up with what’s happening on the field. There are a few changes here and there for SU’s matchup with the Virginia Tech Hokies. But you’ll notice the major one at the running back spot.

Syracuse's Week 7 depth chart: Jordan Fredericks listed as co-RB2. Brisly Estime officially PR1. pic.twitter.com/VJ8zvEaeoq

— Stephen Bailey (@Stephen_Bailey1)
October 10, 2016
Jordan Fredericks, long a resident of some sort of Dino Babers doghouse, finds himself back on the two-deep for the first time since week one or so. While “Fat Back” was the team’s leading rusher in 2015, he’d been used sparingly all season until this past week against Wake Forest. He had three touches for 31 yards vs. the Deacons -- and not just in garbage time, as had been the case in previous games.

In other changes, Brisly Estime is the primary punt returner. It’s a role that he’s gradually taken back over the last few weeks, but it’s finally set in stone now.

Other than that, everything’s pretty much the same from last week. Injuries have still taken their toll on this offensive line, and it’s likely that continues.

Anything else you find curious about this week’s depth chart. Share away in the comments.

Man who robbed CNY McDonalds caught with 2 live pipe bombs in his car, police say (PS; Doran)

A Clay man has been charged in connection with an early-morning robbery at a McDonald's restaurant in North Syracuse, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies also found two live pipe bombs in the man's car, according to Sgt. Jon Seeber, a spokesman for the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office.

Brandon Sobotka, 24, of Briarledge Road, North Syracuse, was charged today with first-degree robbery, two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and one count fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon,Seeber said.

Police said a sheriff's patrol supervisor observed Sobotka running from the McDonald's restaurant at 3806 Brewerton Road in North Syracuse at about 2:55 a.m.

Sobotka - armed with what appeared to be a handgun - had entered the restaurant and demanded money from a restaurant worker, police said.

After taking an undisclosed amount of money, Sobotka fled from the restaurant and got into a vehicle that was parked across the street and tried to flee, police said. As he left, the sheriff's patrol supervisor stopped the vehicle on nearby Wally Road and took Sobotka into custody.

Officers discovered a pellet gun and two incendiary devices inside Sobotka's vehicle, police said. Seeber said the devices were two active pipe bombs. The investigation is continuing into why he had them, deputies said.

Dope

It's not just the idiot posters on here... there are idiot bloggers and idiot internet know it alls who are saying the same thing.

I just chalk it up to normal human behavior of wanting immediate gratification. Not everyone is willing to have patience and realize this is going to take awhile. And I think that is all that was being commented upon.

"According to the internet" is not a good basis for an article. Similar to citing Wikipedia.

Paul Esden, math was never my best subject, but since when is the period from September 17th (USF) to October 15th (Va Tech) "nearly two months"? :rolling:

i guess the same logic would mean a game Sept 30 and Oct 7 would be nearly 2 months.

make the kids employees, now the scholie becomes taxable and the players become like normal kids who end up in debt.
