Syracuse Football: Top 5 orange peels from SU’s victory over CMU (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

There were a lot of exciting moments in the Syracuse football team’s thriller over Central Michigan. ITLH breaks down the top Orange peels from Week 3
That’s what I’m talking about! Finally the Orange is the New Fast came back to life against the Central Michigan Chippewas. I won’t break my wrist patting myself on the back, despite saying last week was a bad day at the office.

Although in the first two quarters it certainly looked like another Middle Tennessee State kind of game. Inept offensively and the Cuse defense keeping the team in the game as long as they could. But everything changed with a record breaking third quarter for the Orange.

The Orange lit it up and, get ready for it, threw the ball downfield! It was a revelation not only among the fanbase but all over social media. I don’t think it was a coincidence that the Orange took shots and good things happened for them.

Before we start looking ahead to the first road game of the season for the Orange against a gargantuan SEC opponent in LSU, lets try to enjoy this victory for SU. Because lets be honest, if the Orange would’ve lost this game, the season would’ve been over. Well in terms of hopes of a bowl berth. You can’t lose back-to-back home games against Central Michigan and Middle Tennessee State and still win six games, not when you’re Syracuse.

Ben Brickman went from serving in the Marines to walking-on at Syracuse (DO; Tanger)

Ben Brickman stood off to the side of the Ensley Athletic Center on an early August afternoon. In front of him sat children of Fort Drum families. They had just finished a skills clinic, run by Syracuse football team, and were now waiting to hear from some of the players before getting autographs.

Alongside Brickman was quarterback Eric Dungey and linebacker Zaire Franklin. The two are arguably the most known SU players and they frequently handle public appearances. Both shared personal stories they had in the past: Franklin on how he wanted to quit football as a kid, Dungey on the respect he has for all military personnel stemming from his own brother’s involvement.

Then Brickman, a former Marine, shared part of his story. He told the kids that he knew what some of their parents were going through, because he also spent months away on deployment serving in Afghanistan.

He didn’t share everything, though. How two kids whom he met at the start of his junior year of high school convinced him to join the Marines. How his friends, the lance corporal and the staff sergeant, were killed in action. And how a 25-year-old wide receiver, who never played football in high school, walked on to a Power 5 program.

“He was a kid,” his father, Stephen Brickman, said. “He came back serious. He came back a man.”

Brickman remembered a purple sky.

LSU Film Room: Tigers can't 'set the edge' vs. Mississippi State; Arden Key neutralized (theadvocate.com; Dellenger)

Welcome to Film Room, our weekly analysis of LSU’s last football game.

Have a seat. No talking. No tweeting. No texting. Pay attention.

How They Happened (big-play analysis)

Rub route: On second-and-13 on the opening series, LSU QB Danny Etling hits DJ Chark for a 67-yard touchdown pass, but the play is negated by offensive pass interference.
View attachment 109966

  • This is what's called a "rub route." Some would call it a "pick play." It's designed for a receiver to, as discretely as possible, disrupt a defensive back's path in covering another receiver. That receiver here is Stephen Sullivan (black line). That DB is Mississippi State's Mark McLaurin (red circle) and that other receiver is Chark (red circle).
  • The play works to perfection. McLaurin picks up Chark, in motion from left to right before the snap, in man coverage. Sullivan effects the route, tangling up two defensive backs, McLaurin and his own man, Tolando Cleveland, to leave Chark wide open. Almost every college football team in America runs some sort of a rub play. Clemson's game-winning TD pass against Alabama in last year's national championship game is a good example. Sometimes it's called for offensive pass interference and sometimes it's not.

'People are going to throw stones at you': Beaten and battered, QB Danny Etling and LSU leaders says it's time to rally (theadvocate.com; Dellenger)

His postgame interview session complete, Danny Etling slowly rose from the metal chair in which he sat, grimacing as he stood tall before slowly walking toward the exit — a look of pain on his face with every step.

Like his team, he was beaten and battered.

This was a rough night.

“They beat us down,” center Tommy Clapp said.

There were plenty reasons LSU lost 37-7 Saturday to Mississippi State.

The Tigers’ usually lock-down defensive backfield gave up two long touchdown passes on busted coverages, a defender nowhere near the receivers. Massive running lanes opened for State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald, resulting in a 6.3-yard average per carry.

LSU’s two senior receivers dropped critical passes that would have been long first-down gains, and the Tigers rolled up 112 yards in penalties.

There’s another: LSU’s offensive line, one that starts four upperclassmen, couldn’t consistently create big running lanes and failed to protect Etling.

LOOK: LSU fans have meltdown on TigerDroppings.com after loss to Mississippi State (seccountry.com; Rill)

LSU fans have certainly had happier times.

On Saturday night, the Tigers lost at Mississippi State, 37-7, and for a team that was expected to be among the best in the country, it was a crushing blow early in the season.

Now, LSU is ranked No. 25 in the AP poll. Another loss would leave it unranked. And fans suddenly don’t know quite how good their team is and what to expect for the rest of the season.

The fans’ uncertainty is shown just by taking a look at a popular Tigers message board. USA Today Sports columnist Dan Wolken tweeted out a screenshot of the forum at TigerDroppings.com shortly after LSU’s loss on Saturday night. And, well, people have certainly been more optimistic there before. Take a look:

Much of the blame seems to be heading toward coach Ed Orgeron, who has coached just three games since losing the interim tag during the offseason. Some Tigers fans may be regretting the school’s decision to keep Orgeron as coach.

Others appear to be disappointed that LSU didn’t hire Tom Herman, who is now the coach at Texas. Some think Orgeron is limiting first-year offensive coordinator Matt Canada’s offense. And others are asking if the pessimism now is worse than it was several years ago.

LSU certainly needs to turn it around next week when it hosts Syracuse. Perhaps a decisive win will help cheer up Tigers fans.

'Game of Thrones' star spotted in downtown Syracuse (PS; Lohmann)

The "Game of Thrones" star who is in Central New York for a new film was spotted at Original Grain, a downtown health-food restaurant.

Nathalie Emmanuel, who plays Missandei in the hit HBO show, is in the Syracuse area to film "Holly Slept Over."

She's co-starring in the romantic comedy with Ron Livingston, who is well known for his leading role in the 1999 movie "Office Space."

@Nathalieemmanuel thanks for stopping by! This is an OG squad [?] #OG[?]

A post shared by Original Grain (@originalgrainsters) on Sep 17, 2017 at 10:35am PDT

Filming begins today at an undisclosed home several miles outside of the village of Manlius, according to a producer.

The film is the first being shot by the team behind the Liverpool School of Cinema. That includes producers Will Phelps, Glen Trotiner and Jeremy Garelick.

The restaurant is closed today, so it's not clear from the restaurant's Instagram account how recently she visited.

She said earlier Sunday that the first scene for the film was "officially in the can," per her Instagram page.

The majority of filming will take place at the Manlius home, Phelps said. Shooting may take place a day in downtown Syracuse and a day in Liverpool, but that's not definite yet, producer Will Phelps said.
