Welcome to Myths and Legends Day!

All over the world there are extraordinary stories—stories that once upon a time were believed to be true but are today limited to the sphere of ancient myths and legends. The question remains, are those myths and legends stories something that existed in the minds of our ancestors, or were they based on true events? Did someone really ask syracusefan.com message board users how to break the spell of a witch? It is true that most of those ancient myths and legends stories appear to the scientific world as fictitious products of vivid imaginations whose goals were purely to explain phenomena beyond their comprehension. Yet is it not arrogant to accuse our ancestors of being uncivilised and ignorant in one breath, then offer them praise and admiration over their monuments, buildings, art, sculptures, and societies in the next? This only proves that our modern society has two contradictory attitudes toward our past.

Swinney expects Bryant to start vs. Syracuse (espn; Hale)

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said he expects quarterback Kelly Bryant to get the start Friday night against Syracuse.

Bryant was sidelined with an ankle injury in the second half of last weekend's 28-14 victory over Wake Forest. He practiced fully on Monday, Swinney said.

"Kelly is our starter. That doesn't change. We'll see him go practice today," Swinney said. "He didn't miss a rep yesterday."

"He looked real good. He looked ready," wide reciever Ray-Ray McCloud said.

Bryant didn't commit to playing when he spoke after the game, saying he needed to see how the ankle injury responded.

If Bryant can't go Friday, either redshirt freshman Zerrick Cooper or true freshman Hunter Johnson will get the nod for No. 2 Clemson (6-0).

Clemson Football vs. Syracuse: Game Announcers, TV Info, Start Time (rubbingtherock.com; Boardwine)

Clemson football will travel to the Carrier Dome to take on the Syracuse Orange on Friday. Here’s all the info you need to watch, listen, or stream live.
Clemson football improved to 6-0 with a 28-14 win over Wake Forest on Homecoming Saturday.

The Tigers are currently ranked No. 2 in the AP Poll and are looking to get to the bye week undefeated.

Their opponent, Syracuse, comes into the game 3-3 with a win over ACC foe Pittsburgh last week.

Here is all the information you need to know to watch, listen, or stream the game live on Friday.

Clemson Football Game Information:

Who: #2 Clemson Tigers (6-0, 4-0) at Syracuse Orange (3-3, 1-1)
Where: Carrier Dome (Syracuse, New York)
When: Friday, October 13th at 7 p.m.
Where to watch: ESPN
TV Announcers: Dave LaMont (Play-by-Play), Mack Brown (Color), Jen Lada (Sideline)

Radio Announcers: Don Munson (Play-by-Play), Tim Bourret (Color), Reggie Merriweather (Sideline)
Where to stream: WatchESPN
Betting Line: Clemson -21.5

Analysis:

This is such a weird game. Clemson football will be playing in a dome (and we know how loud it can be up there….lol) for the first time this season against a Syracuse team with a putrid defense.

It’s also on a Friday, which makes everything that much stranger.

Overall, I’d expect the Tigers to take control of this one early and play a lot of guys.

This is one of those games that you look to build depth with. In my opinion, you will see all three quarterbacks play and a lot of substitution to be done across the field.

Tuesday Update: Concerns at kicker, substitutions and Syracuse (tigernet.com; Hood)

The injury to quarterback Kelly Bryant and the student ticket situation have dominated the message boards and headlines since Saturday’s win over Wake Forest. Lost in all that is the fact the after Friday night’s game at Syracuse, seven of the 12 regular season games will have been played.

CLEMSON FOOTBALL: Swinney remembers ‘dogfight’ at Syracuse (eacourier.com; Lentz)

The No. 2 Clemson Tigers (6-0, 4-0 ACC) travel north this week to take on the Syracuse Orange (3-3, 1-1 ACC) in a rare Friday night (7 p.m., ESPN) game.

Friday night will mark the sixth meeting of the two teams dating back to 1996, when the Orange defeated the Tigers in the Gator Bowl 41-0. But since the Orange joined the ACC in 2013, the Tigers are a perfect 4-0 against Syracuse — winning by at least double digits in all four games.

For Swinney, memories of the Tigers’ last trip to Syracuse — which saw the Tigers hang on to a 37-27 victory — are all too fresh.

"They embarrassed us a couple of years ago up there,” Swinney said. “We jumped on them pretty quickly and the next thing you knew we were in a dogfight. We couldn't score enough points. They went through us that night. We were fortunate to win the game."

The Tigers will face a different head coach from the last time they took on the Orange in New York.

Dino Babers, who took over the program last year from former coach Scott Schaefer, enters his second season and has brought with him a clear identity of what Syracuse football should be — a team that plays fast and competes.

"They have a clear identity. They had a big transition from a coaching standpoint,” Swinney said. “Dino has a plan, there is a clear identity there. He's an excellent leader there. He's going to do a great job there. He has given them an identity that they need.

How Syracuse Beats Clemson – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Edelstein)

Syracuse has lost every regular season game against Clemson ever. The only victory SU has over the Tigers came in the Gator Bowl on New Year’s Day in 1996 when the Orange walked away with a 41-0 W in Jacksonville, Florida.

The Tigers are also the defending national champions this season. And yeah, that’s last year. Some of Clemson’s best players have left the orange, white and purple for the NFL. Deshaun Watson—who tore Syracuse apart last season in a 54-0 rout of Syracuse—is now under center for the Houston Texans. Mike Williams is catching passes for the Los Angeles Chargers. Cordrea Tankersley, Wayne Gallman, Carlos Watkins, Jordan Leggett and others have all moved on from their South Carolina college home.

But… Clemson is still ranked. At No. 2.

Also, the Tigers are 6-0 to start the season. And despite playing three other ranked opponents so far this season (No. 13 Auburn, No. 14 Louisville and No. 12 Virginia Tech), Clemson has not given up more than 21 points in a game. Meanwhile, the Tigers are scoring an average 35 points a game (nearly 31 if you leave out the 56-3 domination of Kent State to lead off the season).

But, for Syracuse fans, put the paper in the shredder! Of course the Orange has a chance! That’s why we play the games.

And here’s how Syracuse can come out on top: wear out the Clemson defense. Rapid fire offensive plays.

We know this by now: fast is Dino Babers’ strategy.

Right now, Syracuse’s offense is just slightly faster that in was last year. The Orange currently averages 21.26 seconds per play compared to the 2016 average of 21.28 seconds per play. (That’s a difference of 0.02 seconds per play—that’s a difference five times shorter than a blink of an eye.)

ACC football power rankings: Week 7 (tomahawknation.com; Weiler)

...
9. Virginia (4-1, 1-0, up one spot)
After its 28-21 home victory over Duke on Saturday, UVA seems destined to make a return to postseason play in Bronco Mendenhall’s second year as coach.

Up next: Needing just two more wins to ensure bowl eligibility, the Cavaliers will trek to Chapel Hill to take on lowly North Carolina this weekend.

10. Duke (4-2, 1-2, down two spots)
A disappointing loss at Virginia on Saturday sent Duke’s expectations crashing back down to Earth after a surprising 4-0 start.

Up next: The Blue Devils’ task gets no easier this weekend when an underperforming but extremely talented Florida State team heads to Durham.

11. Syracuse (3-3, 1-1, up one spot)
The Orange’s postseason chances were buoyed by a 27-24 home win over Pittsburgh which saw quarterback Eric Dungey rack up 365 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Up next: Syracuse stays at home this week for a much more challenging matchup, a Friday night showdown against Clemson.

12. Pittsburgh (2-4, 0-2, down one spot)
Saturday’s sobering loss at Syracuse is just the latest disappointing failure for Pat Narduzzi and Pittsburgh this season

Up next: The Panthers’ ACC slate gets harder from here, beginning this weekend with a home game against a red-hot NC State team.

Projecting the College Football Playoff Rankings: Don't sleep on ACC, Notre Dame (cbssports.com; Palm)

Over the next few weeks, ahead of the first College Football Playoff Rankings release on Oct. 31, we will be predicting what the top 25 would look like if the CFP Selection Committee started early. It is a warmup act for the warmup act, which are the CFP Rankings releases before the final one.

Note: Predictions in this post are based only on results to this point, so they do not reflect the final forecast for the playoff, which can be found here.

Here, we will try to emphasize the same criteria the committee uses. That will be difficult because, as we have learned, the committee can be all over the map. Sometimes, it decides that head-to-head matters; sometimes, it doesn't. Sometimes, strength of schedule matters; sometimes, it doesn't. Sometimes, relative dominance matters; sometimes, it doesn't. Sometimes it's about game control -- whatever that is -- or recency bias or ... ah, you get the idea.
...
...
1
CLEMSON
The Tigers have played the best schedule of anyone to this point and have wins over three other teams on this list, two of which came on the road.
2

ALABAMA
Alabama is coming off a comfortable, if not dominant, win at Texas A&M. Nick Saban did not seem impressed.
3

GEORGIA
The Bulldogs dominance continued with a lopsided win at Vanderbilt. They are the only team to beat Notre Dame.
4

TCU
TCU added a nice win over West Virginia this week to an already very good resume.
5

PENN ST.
The Nittany Lions handled slumping Northwestern on the road the way a top rated team should.
6

WASHINGTON ST.
The Cougars showed no hangover from their big win over USC last week in dispatching Oregon in their first road game of the season.
7

WASHINGTON
The Huskies best win to this point is at Colorado, but the Buffaloes are trending down. No team has a higher average margin of victory though.
8

WISCONSIN
The Badgers have yet to beat a team that is currently above .500. Purdue (3-2) visits next and is arguably the toughest opponent UW will have faced so far.
9

AUBURN
The Tigers are the highest rated one-loss team on this list. They are about to begin a stretch of three straight road games, but then the rest of the season will be played at home.
10

NOTRE DAME
Notre Dame's win at Michigan State looks a lot better now than a week ago. Its loss to Georgia looks better every week also.
11

MIAMI (FLA.)
The Hurricanes finally ended a long losing streak to Florida State. Unfortunately, the Seminoles look pretty toothless right now.
12

VIRGINIA TECH
The Hokies will battle Miami for supremacy in the ACC Coastal eventually. First, they need to take care of business in a couple of games at home.

Virginia Tech looks for first ACC football victory at Boston College (roanoke.com; Bitter)

As Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster tells it, Justin Fuente was already getting his team mentally ready for Saturday’s game against Boston College more than a week ago.

That’s not to say the Hokies looked ahead before Clemson, just that Fuente knew there’d be an aftermath to their titanic showdown with the Tigers that they’d have to deal with, win or lose.

“I’m going to mention this right now, because we’re going to play this game whether we win on a last-second field goal or we get beat on a last-second field goal that’ll rip your heart out,” Foster remembered Fuente saying. “We’ve got to turn the page and move forward, because this game only counts as one. And the next game we play is going to count exactly the same as this one.”

Things didn’t go as planned last weekend for the Hokies, who suffered the same setback every other ranked team has when challenging No. 2 Clemson, falling 31-17 in a game that wasn’t as close as the score indicated.

But that’s in the past now, and No. 16 Virginia Tech (4-1, 0-1 ACC) seeks its first conference win when it travels to play struggling Boston College (2-3, 0-2) at Alumni Stadium on Saturday night.

2017 College Football Predictions (fivethirtyeight.com)

How this works: Our model uses the College Football Playoff (CFP) selection committee’s past behavior and an Elo rating-based system to anticipate how the committee will rank teams and ultimately choose playoff contestants, accounting for factors that include record, strength of schedule, conference championships won and head-to-head results. It also uses ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) and the committee’s rankings to forecast teams’ chances of winning. (Before Oct. 31, when the CFP will release its first rankings, the AP Top 25 poll is used instead.) The teams included above either have at least a 0.5 percent chance of making the playoff or are in the top 25 in at least one of the three rankings we use in our model: FPI, the Elo-based rating or CFP/AP. Every forecast update is based on 20,000 simulations of the remaining season. Full methodology

On the hunt for CNY's best pizza 2017: Twin Trees III (PS; Pucci)

Pictured here is a Buffalo chicken pizza, cut into Twin Trees' signature "West End" strips. For those not familiar, this is not to be confused with the Chicago or party cut pizza, which is a round pie cut into roughly equal squares. Some folks love the interior strips, while others (like myself) live for the crustier so-called "butt end" slices.

The Buffalo chicken pizza was served with a large cup of blue cheese dressing for dipping, which was a big bonus in our book.

The crust
As much as Twin Trees is known for how it cuts its pizza, the pizza shop has earned a reputation for its unique crust. It's far from a thick-crust Sicilian, but it's thicker, softer and puffier than your standard New York-style pizza, landing somewhere in the middle--a place where Central New Yorkers have enjoyed being since Twin Trees got its start in the 1950s.
