Welcome to Hug Holiday Day!

Hugging is a simple way to express many different types of affection, from friendly, to intimate, to familial. It’s an action largely limited to primates — while we can find instances of other animals in positions that resemble hugging, there aren’t any other species that do it so frequently, and for so many reasons — and so, in many ways, hugging sets us apart from the rest of the animal kingdom. It’s not just a differentiator, though: studies show that hugging releases oxytocin, known as the “cuddle hormone,” which can help to strengthen social bonds. So, on Jun. 29, we celebrate Hug Holiday. Get your hug on today!

What if every ACC team goes bowling in 2018? (sbnation.com; Kirk)

In case you’ve been out of it for the last half-decade or so, the ACC is really, really deep football league these days.

While picking my way through each game of the season in advance of preseason bowl projections, I noticed I had almost every ACC team right around .500 or better. That’s despite Clemson soaking up tons of wins, at least on the bulletin board, and standout projections for Miami, Florida State, and Virginia Tech — meaning, this doesn’t just look like one big pile of parity.

Vegas win totals for the conference show every team is expected to at least contend for postseason spots, with 10 teams projected at 5.5 wins or better and the two stragglers, North Carolina and Pitt, still within a win each of bowling. (Pitt’s number was updated since that initial list posted.)

So it’d only take couple non-conference upsets or so in order to have enough wins flowing through the ACC to get everybody close to the postseason and have a nice New Year’s Six showing, if nobody falls well short of expectations.

That’s definitely not the outlook in the Big 12 (which has Kansas), Big Ten (Illinois, Rutgers, etc.), Pac-12 (Oregon State), SEC (Ole Miss is already bowl-banned anyway), or any non-power leagues.

College sports betting: What will it look like? Can Syracuse cash in? (PS; Mink)

Imagine a sports betting utopia where you could be sitting in the Carrier Dome for a Clemson-Syracuse football game placing bets on your phone on whether Dino Babers calls a run or a pass or quarterback Tommy DeVito finishes a quarter with 100 passing yards.

Rapid, in-play bets would flash on a video board in the stadium, giving fans a new way to watch their favorite teams.

"That is," said Neale Deeley, who has more than a decade of experience in the gaming industry, "a very common way of gambling these days."

In the month since the Supreme Court legalized sports betting, state politicians are working to pass regulatory legislation to tax an industry worth hundreds of billions of dollars each year. New York, home of Syracuse University, likely won't get another crack at passing comprehensive legislation until 2019.

ACC Football Rx: 2018-19 ACC Bowl Selection Process (accfootballrx.com; HM)

1. College Football Playoff (four teams)
The Capital One Orange Bowl and the Goodyear Cotton Bowl are national semifinal sites for the 2018 season. There is no limit on how many teams from one conference can appear in the CFP. If any ACC team is in the top four of the final CFP rankings, it will play in one of the national semifinal games.

2a. ACC Champion - Not In Top Four CFP Ranking
If the ACC Champion is not in the top four of the final CFP rankings, it will appear in either the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl or the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl.
2b. At-Large New Year's Six
Additional ACC teams could also be selected for the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl or PlayStation Fiesta Bowl as at-large representatives.

3. Camping World Bowl
The Camping World Bowl has the first pick of an ACC team after the CFP and New Year’s Six Bowls are filled.

4. Tier One Bowls (all equal selection status)
  • Belk Bowl
  • Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl or TaxSlayer Gator Bowl
  • New Era Pinstripe Bowl
  • Hyundai Sun Bowl
5. Additional Bowls (up to five selections, listed in selection order)
  • Military Bowl Presented by Northrop Grumman
  • Walk-On’s Independence Bowl
  • Quick Lane Bowl
  • Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl or Heart of Dallas Bowl
  • Birmingham Bowl
*If not filled by other conferences and additional ACC teams are available.

NC State, Carter-Finley Stadium ranked No. 4 stadium experience in ACC by ESPN (24x7 sports; Smith)

Saturdays are special at Carter-Finley Stadium. Wolfpack Nation is well aware of this fact, but the rest of the country is starting to catch on.

Earlier this week, ESPN.com writer David Hale ranked nearly every game day atmosphere in the ACC based off multiple games. Hale clarified that he didn't include Pittsburgh or Boston College due to never attending games at either stadium. Having been to both to cover games, neither would have likely cracked the top 10 anyway.

As for the entire list, here's a look at how Hale broke it down:

1. Clemson
2. Virginia Tech
3. Florida State
4. NC State
5. Miami (better big game)
6. Louisville (better on avg)
7. Georgia Tech
8. Virginia
9. Syracuse
10. Wake

Ranking all the ACC quarterbacks, and other random college football notes (triblive.com; DiPaola)

...
1. N.C. State, senior Ryan Finley

Hard to pick anyone else as the ACC's best quarterback. This will be Finley's sixth season in Raleigh, and his three top receivers and three OL starters return. He threw for 3,518 yards last season, tops among the conference's returning quarterbacks.

2. Syracuse, senior Eric Dungey.
