Welcome to National Candy Corn Day!

Candy Corn Day celebrates candy corn, the corn kernel shaped candy often eaten during Halloween and throughout the autumn months. The candy is multicolored, with a broad yellow end, tapered orange middle, and white tip, and is usually made from sugar, corn syrup, confectioner's wax, coloring, and binders. It began being manufactured in the 1880's by the Wunderlee Candy Company, and was originally called "Chicken Feed." At that time candy corn was marketed to rural residents. Around the turn of the 20th century, the Goelitz Confectionery Company—now known as Jelly Belly—began making candy corn. Today's recipe for candy corn is basically the same as it was when it was invented, except at that time the candy was made by hand, which is no longer the case

Likely Bowl Games For Syracuse Football – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Leonard)

SU football is bowl eligible for the first time since 2013. You’ve probably already seen that same exact sentence like 20 times in the past couple days and already know that but it’s just fun to type so I did it again.

Now let’s have some fun. Let’s figure out just what bowl SU could be playing in based on how they finish the season. Keep in mind, @Wake Forest, Louisville, Notre Dame (Yankee Stadium) and @Boston College are left on the docket.

Basically, two should-be wins and two tough games in Notre Dame and #24 BC on the road.

4-0

Let’s shoot for the stars and start with the most fun scenario. Say SU runs the table and finishes 10-2, leaving them roughly 12th or 13th in the country or something like that. A New Years six bowl is then a possibility. That’s right.

Chansky's Notebook: Parity Only In The Middle - Chapelboro.com (chapelboro.com; Chansky)

The ACC should be renamed the Big 1 and Little 13.

Here are a couple of head-scratchers about ACC football eight weeks into the season. Why are Virginia, Boston College and Syracuse the only conference teams so far to secure bowl bids, besides Clemson, which obviously is in a league of its own?

That’s because the rest of the ACC contenders are beating up each other while the Tigers and freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence look headed to a national championship duel with top-ranked Alabama. Clemson has home games left with Louisville and Duke and a trip to Boston College, which still could be for the Atlantic Division title.

Virginia, which held off 1-6 Carolina Saturday, is 6-2 overall and in first place in the ACC Coastal at 4-1 after being picked to finish last in the division. UVa has Pitt at home and road trips to Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. If the Cavs can win those three games, they will play for the ACC championship in Charlotte. What a story that would be!

Just look at the ACC football standings after the first eight weeks of the season. While any one of four teams could still win the Coastal, the Atlantic Division is being dominated by 8-0 and second-ranked Clemson, which has blistered N. C. State at home and then almost run Florida State out of Tallahassee. Boston College, like Syracuse has a 3-1 conference record and 6-2 overall, is the only team with a shot at Clemson. The underrated Eagles visit the Tigers on November 10 but also have games left with Virginia Tech, FSU and Syracuse.

Wake Forest vs. Louisville Condensed Game | 2018 ACC Football (msn.com; video)

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons beat the Louisville Cardinals 56-35 in Week 9 ACC football play. Wake Forest running back Matt Colburn II rushed for 243 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Demon Deacons to the win.

Babers explains QB decision, previews Wake Forest (DO; Schafer)

Two days removed from No. 22 Syracuse’s 51-41 win over North Carolina State, head coach Dino Babers reflected on last week’s quarterback competition. Neither Eric Dungey nor Tommy DeVito knew who was starting unti gameday, Babers said.

“They had to go through an entire week of not only competition but also they needed to get graded on the game their exams had to be great,” Babers said. “It was extremely thorough. It was extremely fair.”

Dungey started, and gathered 443 total yards of offense. The senior quarterback’s second-highest passing mark of his career helped the Orange clinch their first bowl game since 2013.

On Sunday afternoon, SU appeared in both the USA Today Coaches Poll and the AP Poll, for the first time since 2001.

“The national exposure of the game and how we played in the game, I think that there’s no doubt that that helped us maybe with the rankings that recently came out,” Babers said. “I don’t think that necessarily we’re exactly where we’re going to end up being or exactly where we need to be. There’s room for improvement the team understands that the coaches understand that.”

As the season progresses forward, Syracuse has slowly racked up injuries, particularly in the secondary. Injured cornerbacks, Scoop Bradshaw (undisclosed) and Chris Fredrick (ankle) played on Saturday, but their substitute Ifeatu Melifonwu left with an apparently hamstring injury.

How Syracuse drew 40,000 people to the Carrier Dome (DO; Graham)

Syracuse hosted its biggest football crowd of the 2018 season Saturday night when North Carolina State came to the Carrier Dome.

Luring 40,769 people to a football game wasn’t luck or happenstance, but in part the culmination of months of work and a week-long blitz from Anthony Di Fino, Syracuse associate athletics director for business development. Prior to the game, Di Fino highlighted two main groups SU targeted to fill the Dome: Students and residents of nearby cities and towns like Rochester, Watertown or Utica.

“To market a game in six days, that to us is the toughest part,” Di Fino said. “Being able to turn around and say, ‘OK, this is primetime.’”

The first step for Di Fino and his team is getting people to the game. That’s done in part with steady ticket-sales advertising from the moment the schedule is released, to more specific game-week appeals, Di Fino said. In the week leading to the North Carolina State game, SU Athletics spent on digital ads targeted to nearby cities and towns — Di Fino named Rochester, Utica, Watertown and Binghamton as examples.

In recent years, Syracuse struggled pulling crowds from these areas as the Orange stumbled to three-straight 4-8 finishes. While Di Fino views the football team as independent from what he does — he aims to put on the best game day experience possible, regardless of the game on the field — he ultimately cannot separate the two.

ACC Football Power Rankings Week 9: Coastal Chaos; plus Clemson and the 13 Dwarves - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

No. 1 Clemson

Clemson just keeps gaining more and more force each week as it ramps up for what seems like another inevitable collision with Alabama. The Tigers curb-stomped FSU in one of the worst defeats in program history; in that performance, quarterback Trevor Lawrence continued to shine. The freshman has now completed 65 percent of his passes (8.4 yards per attempt) for 16 touchdowns and two interceptions.

Watch out, Louisville.

Next up: Louisville

No. 2 Syracuse

There’s nothing quite like a Saturday shootout in the dome, especially now that Syracuse is ranked inside the AP Poll for the first time since 2001. NC State and Syracuse combined for over 1,110 yards of total offense and 92 points, which is sorta insane. But, hey, let’s still go ahead and highlight a defender: Andre Cisco, who continues to be awesome.

ACC Rankings Week Nine (gobblercountry.com; Johnson)

Atlantic

1. Clemson Tigers: The Tigers have submitted three dominating victories since their close call against Syracuse. Their most recent performance was the devastation of FSU, 59-10. Trevor Lawrence went off for 314 yards and four TDs. The Clemson defense held the Seminoles to 247 total offensive yards, including an astounding -21 rushing yards. The Tigers will look to continue their domination of the ACC against Louisville this weekend.

2. Syracuse Orange: The Orange handed the ‘Pack their second consecutive loss during a shootout between Eric Dungey and Ryan Finely. Dungey threw for 411 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Strickland and DeVito also saw the field and the team combined for 480 total passing yards. With the win head coach Dino Babers has qualified for bowl eligibility for the first time during his tenure at Syracuse. Next week the Orange will face Wake Forest away.

3. N.C. State Wolfpack: NCST suffered their second consecutive loss when Syracuse defeated them 41-51. Ryan Finley threw for 473 yards, three TDs, and one INT, but it wasn’t enough to carry the Wolfpack. This weekend the ‘Pack will be off but will next look to secure bowl eligibility against Wake Forest.

4. Boston College Eagles: Well, that loss to Purdue doesn’t look so bad after the Boilermakers upset Ohio State. BC bolstered their resume when they defeated the Hurricanes, 27-14. This squad is simply a different team with A.J. Dillon on the field. Dillon rushed for 149 yards and a TD while the Eagle’s defense held the U scoreless during the second half. The victory places BC into bowl eligibility. Dillon and the Eagles must be licking their chops seeing how the Hokies rushing defense looked this past week against GT. BC invades Blacksburg on Saturday.

ACC power rankings, Week 10: Clemson gives Florida State historic loss (fansided.com; Haringey)

...
7 SYRACUSE ORANGE
Last week: Win vs. NC State, 51-41
Last rank: 8

The Orange continue to have one of their best seasons in recent memory. Their win over the Wolfpack makes them a lock to head to a bowl this season. That’s a terrific accomplishment by Dino Babers and his staff.

Sean Riley and Nykeim Johnson both went over 100 receiving yards in this one. Their ability to terrorize the NC State secondary opened up the entire field for Eric Dungey and company. Anytime you throw for 480 yards you’re going to have a great chance to win.

6 VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES
Last week: Loss vs. Georgia Tech, 49-28
Last rank: 5

The Hokies drop a spot this week after an ugly home loss to Georgia Tech. Virginia Tech looked totally unprepared for the triple option attack the Jackets brought to town. That’s inexcusable for an ACC opponent.

The offense played reasonably well, but this wasn’t the explosive unit we’re used to seeing. They simply didn’t have enough of the ball to put up big numbers. They ended up with just 323 yards of total offense on the night. It was a team loss for the Hokies.

5 MIAMI HURRICANES
Last week: Loss at Boston College, 27-14
Last rank: 4

Malik Rosier just wasn’t good enough to get Mark Richt’s team a victory at Boston College. He was good on the ground, but he couldn’t throw the ball consistently enough to keep his offense on schedule. That, combined with an inability to match Boston College’s physical offensive line cost Miami an opportunity to score an important win.

DeeJay Dallas’ inability to get going also kept the Miami offense in neutral. He finished the game with just 30 yards rushing on nine carries. The Hurricanes just didn’t do anything well on offense in this one. As such, they drop a spot in this week’s power rankings.

ACC power rankings: Does anyone (other than Clemson) play defense anymore? (newsobserver.com; Giglio)

On to the “Only* ACC Power Rankings That Matter:”

1. Clemson

Record: 8-0 (5-0 ACC)
Last game: at Florida State (W, 59-10)
Next game: Saturday, vs. Louisville

With a healthy Trevor Lawrence, the Tigers have won their past three ACC games by a combined score of 163-20. Is that good?

2. Syracuse

Record: 6-2 (3-2 ACC)
Last game: vs. N.C. State (W, 51-41)
Next game: Saturday, at Wake Forest

Don’t look now, but a double-digit win season (the first since 2001) is in play for the Orange.

3. Boston College

Record: 6-2 (3-1 ACC)
Last game: vs. Miami (W, 27-14)
Next game: Saturday, at Virginia Tech

A healthy A.J. Dillon (149 rushing yards in the win over Miami) makes a large difference.

College football rankings: SEC, ACC surging with bevy of teams in top 25 of new CBS Sports 129 (cbssports.com; Patterson)

All year we've looked forward the changing of the calendar from October to November and the arrival of Week 10, annually one of the most significant in the college football season. It's here that we traditionally get matchups that will forever twist and turn championship races, including the pursuit of a spot in the College Football Playoff.

It's here in Week 10 that we traditionally get Alabama vs. LSU, this year again in primetime on CBS as the series returns to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This year's LSU team, ranked No. 4 in the latest edition of the CBS Sports 129, our comprehensive ranking of all 129 FBS teams, gives the Tigers their best chance to beat the Tide in years. The winner of that game has the edge in the SEC West, and it follows another division title tilt as Georgia's visit to Kentucky (3:30 p.m ET on CBS) will determine the leader in the SEC East.

In total, the SEC holds one-third of the top-15 spots in this week's balloting of the CBS Sports 129 with Florida checking in at No. 14 behind the division title contenders. Mississippi State rounds out the SEC's representation in the top 25 of the rankings after a 12-spot jump to No. 21 following its win against Texas A&M.

Syracuse had the biggest move of the week, vaulting from outside the top 50 to No. 23. The Group of Five also has some of its most prolific representation at the top that we've seen all year. UCF has been a mainstay in our rankings, but Houston, Fresno State and Utah State all cracked the top 20 after big wins in Week 9.

What are our experts' top bets for CFB Week 10? (SI; Staff)

Sometimes the biggest games on the boards aren't the most interesting from a gambling perspective. Our experts' best bets for Week 10 of college football all deal with the middle classes of major conferences.

Georgia Tech (-4.5) at North Carolina

Sat. 11/3, 12:15 p.m. ET

Pick: Georgia Tech -4.5

It’s an achievement that has gone a bit under the radar, but Georgia Tech has won three of its past four games and averaged 59.3 points per game in those victories. The Yellow Jackets’ single defeat in that stretch came against a Duke team that had only one loss entering the contest, so you can fairly say that Georgia Tech has been playing well as of late. Well, look for head coach Paul Johnson’s team to keep rolling this week.

The Yellow Jackets couldn’t possibly have a better matchup, as the Tar Heels are the lousiest team in the ACC this season. North Carolina’s only win of the year was a 38-35 win over mediocre Pittsburgh in the team’s home opener. This team also happens to have an atrocious rushing defense, which is going to make things pretty difficult against Georgia Tech’s triple-option offense. The Tar Heels are allowing 191.3 rushing yards per game this season, which is more than only 30 teams in FBS. That means that the Yellow Jackets should be able to run all over them in this game, and that’ll be the case whether it’s TaQuon Marshall or Tobias Oliver at quarterback. Georgia Tech did just that in last year’s 33-7 win over North Carolina as a 10-point home favorite, and the team will do it again on its way to its seventh win and cover in 10 games against the Tar Heels. — Zachary Cohen

Syracuse's next brewery, its 11th, to open downtown in 2019 (PS; Cazentre)

It's got a slightly off-kilter name, plans for some out-of-the-ordinary beers and what appears to be a pretty good location.

When it opens early next year, Talking Cursive Brewing Co, will become at least the 11th beer-making business operating within the city limits of Syracuse. (That's if a different one doesn't open sooner).

It will bring the total number of breweries in Onondaga County to more than 20.

The brewery and tap room will take a space in the Creekwalk Commons, at 301 Erie Blvd. W. That's next to a Cafe Kubal location and across the street from the iconic National Grid (Niagara Mohawk) building.

Co-owner and brewer Andrew Brooks is hoping to open in early February, in time for the annual Syracuse Winterfest downtown. The exact date is still uncertain.

Brooks, of Manlius, will operate Talking Cursive with his wife, Patricia, and business partner, Susan Kimmell of Constantia.

It will start with 15 taps -- serving both its own and "guest" beers, plus other New York craft beverages. There will also be a small kitchen serving a limited food menu -- baked potatoes, ale-braised hot dogs, charcuterie plates etc.

Syracuse 7th in the Fansided power rankings???

great job by Custis.. my other question would be how many times are they being targeted down the field with passes. I get the sense we throw to him 2-4 times a game on these throws but no idea how many the others guys are, and no one knows how many times he is the first option and we dont even try the throws.
