Welcome to National Hot Sauce Day!

Today we celebrate and enjoy hot sauce! It is used in Bloody Marys, and put on foods such as eggs, enchiladas, and chicken wings. There are many variations and brands of it, but the one thing common to all hot sauce is the presence of chili peppers. Other common ingredients are salt and vinegar, and some have fruits and vegetables. Hotter peppers—those that are higher on the Scoville scale—are usually used to make hotter sauces, although pure capsaicin extract and mustard oil can increase the heat of a sauce as well. Ingredients vary by region, as does how hot sauces tend to be. Hot sauces aren't just liked for the flavor and heat they add to food; they also have many health benefits.

Habanero, cayenne, jalapeño, and chipotle peppers are commonly used to make hot sauce in America. Habanero and scotch bonnet peppers are favorites for hot sauce in the Caribbean, while chipotles are a favorite to make the sauce in Mexico. Raw chiles are often used instead of hot sauce in Thailand, although Sriracha is a hot sauce made there, and it has become popular around the world. Hot sauce in China is usually thicker and called chili sauce; brine solutions and pickling are also often involved in Chinese hot sauces.

Is Tommy DeVito’s silent approach the right one for SU football? (PS; Axe)

You know when a quarterback breaks the huddle and waves his arms to get a crowd to quiet down?

Syracuse football quarterback Tommy DeVito did the social media version of that maneuver this week.

Call it the #SyracuseShush.

Brick By Brick... We Build
— Tommy DeVito (@tommydevito007) January 21, 2020
“The 2019 season was not what we envisioned as a team; we did not reach our goals, and we hit rock bottom," DeVito wrote. "This off-season is about growth and development. 2020, there will be no hype. There will be no talk about Syracuse Football. There will be no expectations, but for us to lose. The only people that know what we have is us. The 2020 Syracuse Football Team. No more talking... Beware of the quiet man. New Year, New Team, One Dream.”

The “Fight Club” approach is a stark contrast to the months-long parade that followed a 10-win season in 2018 for SU football.

Ticket sales boomed. Hype videos flowed off the Syracuse football social media accounts. Orange legends Tom Coughlin, Larry Csonka and Floyd Little brought a historic jolt to the spring game. A party was held at the Turning Stone’s Lava Club to unveil new uniforms.

Syracuse football officially adds star power to bolster 2020 roster (itlh; Esden Jr)

Syracuse football has announced some additions to the 2020 roster. Here are all the details and who is worth keeping an eye on heading into next season.

With the spring semester starting the Syracuse football squad has announced nine new additions to the 2020 roster.

Some of them bring some much-needed star power to some key positional units ahead of next season.

On the offensive line, the Orange announced the addition of Chris Bleich via the transfer portal from Florida.

The 6-foot-6, 321-pound offensive lineman is currently scheduled to sit out the 2020 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Although per Stephen Bailey of Syracuse.com, Chris is applying for an immediate eligibility waiver based on two key items. Primarily it involves a “family hardship” and on the other hand, Bleich claims he “didn’t have a choice” but to play through injuries with the Florida Gators.

Prior to the current Dino Babers regime, Syracuse was the first school to offer Chris Bleich a scholarship when he was in high school six years ago.

We’ll have to wait and see if Bleich is successful in his pursuit for a waiver to play next season, but regardless he brings a veteran presence. Chris played in 12 games during his two seasons for Florida including eight starts at guard this past year.

Syracuse will be losing one starter off of last year’s offensive line (Evan Adams) who conveniently played guard. In theory, Chris Bleich could plug and play to fill that hole in the trenches.

Where are the top 24 NY football recruits headed in 2020? (PS; Mink)

Another wave of recruits will make their college choices in two weeks.

Though the February signing date has been overrun by the early signing period in December as the definitive date on the recruiting calendar, this is the time of year when schools round out their classes.

More than 75 percent of all prospects have signed, according to 247sports.com. And New York is not immune to that. Of the top 24 high school football players in the state, all but four already signed.

Syracuse has pulled in one recruit from New York this cycle in Rochester-area tight end Steve Mahar.

Steep competition recruiting the best in the state is still a battle SU faces, and the numbers once again show there are a limited number of elite prospects each year. For this exercise, we pulled all data and measureables from the 247sports.com composite rankings.

Here is where the top players in New York are headed:

1. Tirek Murphy - Purdue

  • Position: Running back
  • Height: 5-foot-11
  • Weight: 220 pounds
  • Stars: 4
  • High school: Christ the King
The No. 1 prospect in the state, Murphy signed with Purdue. He brings a college-ready frame and blends speed and power with the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.

Syracuse and Purdue have a home-and-home scheduled for the 2022 and 2023 seasons, with the first meeting scheduled to take place at the Carrier Dome.

2. Lamy Constant - Unsigned

  • Position: Running back
  • Height: 6-foot
  • Weight: 186 pounds
  • Stars: 4
  • High School: Canarsie
Constant remains unsigned after decommitting from West Virginia last month.

Early ACC Football Predictions for 2020 (athlonsports.com; Lassan)

Clemson is a heavy favorite to win the ACC in 2020

Clemson's dominant run in the ACC isn't likely to end in 2020, as coach Dabo Swinney's team is a heavy favorite to repeat as the conference champion. But the rest of the conference has plenty of intrigue in both divisions and how the early pecking order looks for next season. Louisville, Florida State and Wake Forest are locked into a close battle for the next three spots, followed by another close cluster between NC State, Syracuse and Boston College. As usual, the Coastal is one of the most difficult divisions to sort out in the very early predictions. For now, Virginia Tech holds a slight edge over North Carolina. However, the next tier of teams - Pitt, Miami and Virginia - isn't far behind. Look for Georgia Tech to improve in coach Geoff Collins' second year at the helm.

It’s never too early to think about predictions or rankings for the 2020 college football season. With that in mind, Athlon provides its early power rankings for the ACC for 2020:

Early ACC Predictions for 2020

Atlantic Division

1. Clemson

The Tigers will open 2020 as an overwhelming favorite to win the ACC. Coach Dabo Swinney’s team has won five consecutive conference titles and claimed two out of the last four national championships. With quarterback Trevor Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne back to lead the offense, Clemson should expect its sixth straight trip to the CFB Playoff. Lawrence will have a retooled line in front of him and won’t have receiver Tee Higgins, but there’s enough returning experience up front and plenty of talented playmakers to fill the void on the outside. Coordinator Brent Venables consistently churns out elite defenses and the 2020 version should be another standout group. An elite recruiting class adds to the depth and talent in the trenches, which is set to return Tyler Davis, Justin Foster and Xavier Thomas. Isaiah Simmons is a huge loss at linebacker, and the secondary has to replace cornerback A.J. Terrell and safeties Tanner Muse and K’Von Wallace. Clemson’s schedule is once again favorable, but a road trip to Notre Dame awaits on Nov. 7.

2. Louisville

The Cardinals showed marked improvement in coach Scott Satterfield’s first year. After a 2-10 record in 2018, Louisville won eight games and finished second in the Atlantic Division with a 5-3 conference mark. With another offseason for Satterfield and his staff to build the program, contending for a finish in the top 25 should be within reach. The Cardinals finished second in the ACC by averaging 6.68 yards a snap and will be explosive once again. Quarterback Micale Cunningham, running back Javian Hawkins and receiver Tutu Atwell form one of the top trios in the ACC. The biggest loss on offense is standout left tackle Mekhi Becton, but three other starts up front are back for 2020. Improving a defense that allowed 33.4 points a game and did not have a player selected for all-conference honors is the No. 1 priority this offseason. This group must get better versus the run and the pass, while also generating more pressure (27 sacks). With most of the two-deep returning, the pieces are in place for this unit to take a step forward in 2020. Road trips to Notre Dame, Syracuse, Clemson and Virginia dot the schedule, but Louisville gets key swing games versus Kentucky, Florida State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest at home next fall.

3. Florida State

Florida State made the best hire of the offseason by landing Mike Norvell to replace Willie Taggart as the program’s next coach. Norvell won’t return the program to the top of the ACC in one offseason, but he’s starting to put the pieces in place for the Seminoles to improve significantly over the next couple of years. Florida State finished 4-4 in conference play in 2019 and lost four of its games by seven points or less, so small improvement could lead to an eight-win debut. Norvell has to find a quarterback to direct his high-powered offense, and James Blackman will be pushed by Jordan Travis and two incoming freshmen for the starting job. Cam Akers leaves big shoes to fill at running back, but Khalan Laborn and Texas A&M transfer Jashaun Corbin (if awarded a waiver) is potentially a solid one-two punch. Tamorrion Terry (60 catches) passed on the NFL for another season in Tallahassee and should be the go-to target for whichever quarterback wins the job. Improving the offensive line is Norvell’s top priority this offseason. The addition of FIU transfer Devontay Taylor will help, but this unit has struggled mightily the last two years. New defensive coordinator Adam Fuller inherits a group that allowed 27.8 points a game in 2019. The path to improvement is already off to a good start, as lineman Marvin Wilson decided to return for 2020 and defensive back/linebacker Jaiden Lars-Woodbey returns to the lineup after missing most of the season due to injury. The Seminoles won’t lose much in the way of key pieces off the defense, so Fuller’s arrival could help this group take a step forward next fall. An intriguing non-conference matchup is slated at Boise State on Sept. 19, and the road schedule features trips to Syracuse, NC State, Miami and Louisville. A crucial swing game for positioning in the Atlantic against Wake Forest takes place in Tallahassee.

4. Wake Forest

For the first time in program history, the Demon Deacons have made four consecutive bowl trips. Even though Jamie Newman left as a transfer to Georgia, coach Dave Clawson’s team should extend that streak to five in 2020. After throwing for 1,984 yards and 16 touchdowns as the team’s starter in 2018, Sam Hartman is back under center as the team’s No. 1 quarterback. The sophomore should be one of the ACC’s top signal-callers next season, and the return of Sage Surratt provides a big-time playmaker at receiver. Clawson has to restock the receiving corps outside of Surratt, as Kendall Hinton (73 catches), Scotty Washington (35) and tight end Jack Freudenthal (32) depart. Kenneth Walker III (579 yards) should keep the ground game performing at a high level with Cade Carney out of eligibility, and Maryland graduate transfer Terrance Davis is a key pickup with both tackles – Justin Herron and Jake Benzinger – out of eligibility. Wake Forest’s defense will have to replace linebacker Justin Strnad and cornerbacks Essang Bassey and Amari Henderson off a unit that gave up 29.1 points a game and 5.8 yards a play. However, first-team All-ACC Carlos Basham (11 sacks) passed on the NFL to return for 2020. Key swing games against Florida State, Louisville and NC State take place on the road. However, Clemson, Miami and Syracuse come to Winston-Salem next year.

5. NC State

Coach Dave Doeren’s seat is starting to warm in Raleigh after a 4-8 record in 2019. After back-to-back nine-win seasons (2017-18), the Wolfpack won just one contest in ACC play and lost six of its seven conference matchups by more than 14 points. A revamped coaching staff was a step in the right direction this offseason, as Tim Beck was hired to call plays on offense, with Tony Gibson handling the defensive side. Devin Leary (1,219 yards and eight touchdowns) gained valuable experience at quarterback as a freshman last fall, but Bailey Hockman, Ty Evans and incoming freshman Ben Finley are also in the mix under center. Whichever quarterback wins the job has a solid supporting cast in place, as Zonovan Knight and Jordan Houston power the ground game and four of the team’s top five receivers back for 2020. The offensive line surrendered only 18 sacks in 2019 and is slated to return intact. The Wolfpack lose a couple of pieces up front and in the secondary, but the linebacker unit features promising players in Payton Wilson and Isaiah Moore. An early-season matchup against Mississippi State is a good barometer test, and Doeren’s squad gets key swing games against Boston College, Duke, Wake Forest and Florida State in Carter-Finley Stadium.

6. Syracuse

After a disappointing 5-7 record in 2019, coach Dino Babers isn’t sitting idle. Two new coordinators (Sterlin Gilbert for offense and Zach Arnett for defense) will help get this program back on track after a five-game regression in the win column. After averaging 40.2 points a game in 2018, Syracuse recorded only 28.3 a contest last fall. The development of quarterback Tommy DeVito is crucial to propel the offense in 2020, but the line has to take a massive step forward after allowing 50 sacks last season. Jarveon Howard and Abdul Adams are a capable duo on the ground, but the passing game is going to miss receiver Trishton Jackson (66 catches). Changes on defense were a must after Syracuse surrendered 30.7 points a game in 2019, but Arnett is inheriting a group that loses key linemen Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman, linebackers Andrew Armstrong and Lakiem Williams and defensive backs Christopher Fredrick and Evan Foster. Safety Andre Cisco should be among the top players in the ACC at his position. Rutgers, Colgate, Western Michigan and Liberty is a favorable non-conference slate, and Syracuse hosts Georgia Tech, Louisville and NC State in key swing games. However, the Orange play at Pitt, Clemson, Boston College and Wake Forest next season.

What's Clemson's 2020 Schedule Going to Look Like? (SI; Senkiw)

for gbo

The ACC is the only Power 5 conference that’s yet to release its football teams' schedules for the upcoming season.

The long wait is just about over.

The league is set to announce the entire 2020 slate Wednesday on “Packer and Durham” show at 9 a.m. on ACC Network.

While the 5-time reigning conference champ Clemson has known which ACC schools it will play and where for some time, Wednesday it’ll know when.

Here’s a look at who and where:

The home conference games are against Louisville, N.C. State, Syracuse and Virginia.

The road conference games are at Boston College, Florida State, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech.

The Tigers non-conference slate looks like this: Akron (Sept. 19), at Notre Dame (Nov. 7), The Citadel (Nov. 14) and South Carolina (Nov. 28).

There will only be one off week in 2020, and the ACC championship game is scheduled for Dec. 5 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.

Here are five questions about Clemson's 2020’s full schedule to ponder:

Who will Clemson play the first two weeks?

With the out-of-conference games already scheduled with a date, it means the Tigers will play two ACC opponents the first two weeks of the season.

What it’ll look like can be deduced from the rest of the ACC non-conference slates.

Syracuse, N.C. State, Louisville and Georgia Tech are the only ACC teams on Clemson’s schedule that don’t have a Week 1 game already scheduled.

The Cardinals are the only team that doesn’t have a Week 2 contest set.

Maybe the likeliest scenario is that the Tigers start the season against Georgia Tech in Atlanta and then host Louisville the following week.

Prognosis for VT 2020 (RX; HM)

Prognosis for VT 2020

So once again the Virginia Tech Hokies football team was in the off-season news for the wrong reason - this time, because Coach Justin Fuente interviewed with Baylor. Assuming they can get past that, do the Hokies have a realistic chance to have a bounce-back season in 2020?

There are two things we need to consider to answer that question: Truth and Youth.

Truth

Fuente's four years: 33-20, 20-12 ACC, two top-25 seasons.

Previous four years: 29-23, 16-16 ACC, no top-25 seasons. https://t.co/2jFeo8JCDH
— David Teel (@DavidTeelatDP) January 19, 2020
Those who are critical of Coach Fuente's tenure in Blacksburg might want to explain this stat.

Or maybe Fuente's problem is that people remember the peak years under Coach Beamer, but they forget how his career ended at Virginia Tech. Yes, Fuente is struggling - but his 0.622 win percentage is better than the 0.558 program was mired in when he arrived. At least VT was able to taste a 10-win season already (and only one season with fewer than 8 wins) under Coach Fu; the four years prior to his arrival, the Hokies did no better than 8 wins, and only got that far once.

If everyone is Irish for a weekend in March, why can’t we be Scottish for a weekend in January? Burns Supper is a tradition in Scotland to honor the birth of poet Robert Burns. At the Brae Loch Inn, where they’ve been celebrating Burns suppers since it opened in 1946, that means two nights of Celtic music, Scotch whisky tastings and food. On Friday, complimentary Scottish appetizers will be served, while the restaurant will prepare a proper six-course Burns feast on Saturday, complete with bagpipes, Highland and Irish step dancing and other entertainment.

Where: Brae Loch Inn, 5 Albany St., Cazenovia.

Posted in Jimmy G thread but warrants mention here too:

Interesting comments from Dino in today’s NYP re: Jimmy that sheds some additional light on our offense and play calling responsibilities.

Regarding my "2020 Early Look: Best Games by Week"... obviously Syracuse at Boston College jumps to the top of Week #1... at least among conference games played on Friday night, Sept. 4th... among ACC fans living in the Northeast... I'm confident about that.
