Welcome to National Apple Strudel Day!
  1. A strudel is a type of layered pastry with a — most often sweet — filling inside, often served with cream. It became well known and gained popularity in the 18th century through the Habsburg Empire.
  2. Strudel is most often associated with Austrian cuisine but is also a traditional pastry in the whole area formerly belonging to the Austro-Hungarian empire.
  3. The oldest Strudel recipe (a Millirahmstrudel) is from 1696, a handwritten recipe at the Viennese City Library, Wiener Stadtbibliothek. The pastry has its origins in the similar Byzantine Empire or Middle Eastern pastries.
  4. Strudel is a loanword in English from German. The word itself derives from the German word Strudel, which in Middle High German literally means “whirlpool” or “eddy”.
  5. In Hungary it is known as rétes, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia as štrudla or savijača, in Slovenia as štrudelj or zavitek, in the Czech Republic as závin or štrúdl, in Romania as ștrudel, and in Slovakia as štrúdľa or závin.

Embarking on an unprecedented season has SU officials thinking contingency plans (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

The Syracuse Orange Football players started returning to campus last week for voluntary workouts.

The next step is to expand the number of players they're working with until the full training camp which could start in July if an NCAA proposal goes through.

The season opener is set for September 4 on the road at Boston College with the home opener slated for September 19th against Colgate.

All dates to remember, because the course of the coronavirus will determine if and when they'll happen---and whether we see unique situations unfold.

Make no mistake Syracuse Athletic Director John Wildhack and Syracuse Deputy Athletic Director Herm Frazier are thinking of every potential problem and a solution to every one of them.

"From the get-go, the number one priority is the health and safety of our student-athletes and our staffs. If there's a need, if we have to delay etc., that type of thing, if there's a truncated season, there's ways we can do that" said Wildhack.

Those may be the first issues and solutions that come to mind, a season that needs to be pushed back or limited in games.

But what about the feasible and potentially most havoc-wreaking scenarios?

Syracuse legend David Tyree on Clean Juice, The Catch, NFL kneeling - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Former Syracuse Orange and New York Giants star David Tyree calls in to discuss his new business venture, kneeling during the national anthem in the NFL, and his miracle helmet catch in Super Bowl 42 with Wes Cheng on The Juice on the Cuse podcast hosted by SNY.tv. TJO editor in chief Brad Bierman then calls in to chat about preseason awards for Andre Szmyt and Cisco.

SNY.tv Syracuse Podcasts · The Juice on the Cuse 6-16-20: With Syracuse/Giants legend David Tyree

Here are the highlights from the show:

Wesley Cheng: I can’t believe it, but the 2007 Super Bowl to now, it’s been 13 years since your incredible helmet catch. You’ve done so much since then. You’ve written a book called “More Than Just The Catch.” You’ve worked in the NFL front office. You’re about to start a business. But do people still stop you on the street and ask about the catch all this time later?

David Tyree: They do. And I have the ability to whisk away into the shadows. My life has seen such purpose beyond football and ‘The Catch.’ I’ve realized that ‘The Catch’ was about establishing a platform where I could serve other people. From an inspirational standpoint, that catch has meant so many things to so many different people. That’s the coolest thing about it. Now being a part of that history for the New York Giants and the NFL community, it goes so far above and beyond. It’s a privilege and an honor. It’s not something you can plan for. It’s a gift from God and I do my best to steward it. Big shout out to all the football fans, Cuse fans, Giants fans, and football fans all together to be a part of the conversation.

2020 Week 1 - Conference Games

FBSchedules commented on "The 12 FBS teams that kickoff 2020 with a conference opponent"

Week 1 of the 2020 college football schedule is jam-packed with 82 contests. Of these, a mere six feature two conference foes squaring off... All six contests feature Power 5 matchups – three apiece from the ACC and Big Ten. Of these, three are cross-division games (one between “permanent” rivals) and three are divisional matchups. Four of the six are scheduled as non-Saturday games, two each on Thursday and Friday nights...
Oh, what conference cable TV channels hath wrought!

The ACC Games:

CLEMSON at GEORGIA TECH – Thursday, Sept. 3
These permanent cross-division rivals also kicked off last season together... Prior to that, the Tigers hadn’t opened with an ACC opponent since 2007 when it hosted #19 Florida State... For the Yellow Jackets it was 2016... Georgia Tech leads the all-time series 50-32-2 but Clemson has won five straight.
NC STATE at LOUISVILLE – Thursday, Sept. 3
NC State hasn’t opened with an ACC opponent since 2005 when it hosted #8 Virginia Tech... It hasn’t won such a game since besting Maryland (an ACC member until 2013) in the 1989 season opener. For Louisville, it’s been since 2014, also its inaugural season as an ACC member, when it kicked off with a 31-13 win vs. Miami at home. The Cardinals lead the all-time series 7-3 but the two have split the last four...
SYRACUSE at BOSTON COLLEGE – Friday, Sept. 4
The last time Syracuse started with a league foe was in 2005, a 15-7 home loss to then fellow Big East member West Virginia. The Orange have never won a season opener that featured an in-conference opponent as members of the Big East (1991-2012) or the ACC (2013-present)... For Boston College, it kicked off with a victory over a league foe as recently as last season, downing Virginia Tech 35-28 at home. Its last such loss came in 2016, a 17-14 defeat vs. Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland. Syracuse leads the all-time series 31-21 but the two have split the last four, the visiting team winning on each occasion...

Cuomo on reopening malls: Will shoppers follow the rules? (PS; Tampone)

While it’s possible New York’s malls could develop good plans to reopen safely, the real question is whether people would follow the new rules, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday.

“There is a big variance between what is theoretically possible and what can actually happen in reality,” he said. “Well, we’ll have the rules and we’ll enforce the rules. Yeah, I understand that. But that’s also theoretical.”

Cuomo said the state is looking at reopening malls and understands local officials want to move faster. A group of Syracuse-area Assembly members held an event today to push for the reopening of Destiny USA.

Cuomo said he’s as eager as anyone to reopen.

“No one is more aggressive than I am,” he said. “But I’m not foolish either.”

Cuomo noted that the state’s data-based approach to reopening has been proven right. The virus has continued to decline even as businesses have restarted.
“Look at our progress,” he said. “Look at how we’re doing on reopening. We are exactly where we said we would be on the phases. The data is good.

“At one point, you can’t argue with the results.”

Malls and other nonessential businesses in New York first closed in March to help slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. A phased reopening began in Central New York and several other regions in May.

How often have we opened a season with an in-conference opponent?

Just once since we joined the Big East in 1991:

2005 vs West Virginia

Small sample size theatre.

That quote implies it has happened numerous times, when it’s actually just a function of being such a rarity to open vs a conference foe.

First of all we never belonged to a conferance till we joined the Big East and 2nd of all we have only had 1 game when we played a in conferance team in an opener. I suspect this was by design so that we could get our feet wet before conferance play began.I believe that was by design by most conferance teams.

No doubt, opening with a conference opponent was very uncommon before the creation of conference networks. I guess it's just a small sample size thing.

if there is a yr to dump $20 on SU its this yr.. no reason we cant beat everyone but Clemson, and who knows what school be the 1-2-10 who have an issue and lose key players in big games.

Problem is, if we lose to Clemson, they would have to lose 2 other league games for us to have a chance to win the league.
