Welcome to Mickey Mouse Day!

Mickey Mouse made his screen debut in the short film Steamboat Willie, on November 18, 1928. Today is seen as being Mickey's birthday, as well as Mickey Mouse Day. He was the creation of Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. Disney needed a character to replace Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, after he had lost the rights to Oswald to Universal Studios. He asked Iwerks to draw up the new character, and various animals were rejected before a mouse was settled upon. The final choice of a mouse may have been influenced by Disney, who was inspired by a mouse he had seen while working at Laugh-O-Gram Studios. Iwerks originally called the mouse Mortimer Mouse, but was convinced by his wife to change the name. Mickey shared many characteristics with Oswald, but had some differences. For example, Mickey's ears were drawn as circles, in contrast to Oswald's elongated bunny ears. Iwerks designed Mickey's body and ears out of circles so that he would be easy to animate. Over the years there have been various tweaks to Mickey's design, whether it be with his body shape or type of eyes. He is also usually seen wearing white gloves, red shorts, and large yellow shoes.

Syracuse football players focus on Louisville: What they're saying with three games left (cnycentral.com; Hauswirth)

It's been a season to forget for the Syracuse University football program, one outweighed with negatives and very few positives.

At 1-7 overall and 1-6 in ACC play, the Orange has nothing to lose at this point.

Syracuse is preparing to meet the Louisville Cardinals in a primetime game Friday night with a national television audience.

Syracuse and Louisville will meet Friday at 7 p.m. on ESPN.

It's a Cardinals team that shares the misery of the Orange in this unusual 2020 season -- two programs combining for only three wins on the season.

Similar to Syracuse, Louisville has been hit hard by injuries and opt outs, mixed with blowout losses and blowout wins, too.

Orange football players met with the media Tuesday night, a weekly occurrence during the college football season, discussing what's left to accomplish with three games remaining in the season.

Below are the top three headlines from each player that spoke Tuesday night, including freshman tailback Sean Tucker, senior defensive end Kingsley Jonathan and senior tight end Aaron Hackett.

What Syracuse is saying about Louisville football leading up to Saturday's game (C-J; Yates)

It's been a rough season for Syracuse.

Sitting at 1-7 and amid a 5-game losing streak, the Orange are in a tough spot — similar to Louisville. The Cardinals sit at 2-6 after a loss to Virginia.

U of L coach Scott Satterfield said Syracuse's 16-13 loss to Boston College was one of the better games the Orange have played this year.

Syracuse coach Dino Babers is keying in on the Cardinals' "explosive offense":

Q. What do you see from Louisville and its dynamic offense?

Babers: "They're explosive. They're so explosive. For them to have their (Javian Hawkins) down and Tutu (Atwell) who just runs by everybody, doesn't matter what the other jerseys are. To have those guys down and still put points up on the board, it's really, really impressive. You have to take your hat off to (Scott) Satterfield. He, my goodness, it's an explosive offense. He's done a nice job with the personnel he has. They continue to find ways to score points. I've been impressed with what they've been able to the two seasons they've been there."

Q. What unique challenges does Tutu Atwell create?

Babers: "You can't tackle him 1-on-1. He's quick. He's shifty. He's small. He's faster than everybody else. Say every positive thing you want to say about the young man and then offensively, they use him in a way that really puts the defense on edge. This guy is good. (Malik Cunningham) is extremely good. Their defense, people don't give them enough credit, but they play a difficult scheme on defense. Their special teams are electric. This is a highly, highly skilled football team and Tutu is probably, along with that quarterback and tailback, the three highest skilled players on that team."

Opponent Breakdown: Syracuse Orange Defense (cardchronicle.com; Wynne)

Dino Babers did something this past year that I think plenty of offensive coaches don’t always have the guts to do. He fired his Defensive Coordinator and he did whatever it took to get a guy that ran the specific system he wanted to run his defense. It took him a while to get his guy but the system has worked well even in a year where injuries have decimated that side of the ball. Syracuse might not be where they want to be on defense, but they’re much more competent this year and they have a system that has shown to be good at getting negative plays.

The most veteran group on this entire team is the Defensive Line. Joshua Black is a long time starter who is now playing Defensive End in the new three-man front. He joins McKinley Williams and Kingsley Jonathan to form a pretty good group up front. They’ve done a good job of being disruptive up front but they haven’t adapted enough to get to the passer. It’s a similar issue we’ve seen with Louisville as they moved to a new scheme. The guys they have don’t really fit things well but they’re showing flashes.

Mikel Jones is going to be a star in the ACC, in my opinion. He is the weakside backer for the Orange and he is a great play maker. Jones was a four star recruit until it became obvious that he was picking Syracuse and he’s lived up to his recruitment. He leads Syracuse in interceptions, tackles, QB hurries, and forced fumbles. He will be such a key player as a guy who can really run and close down backside running lanes.

Riley Dixon booms 71-yard punt; Latavius Murray nominated for award (Syracuse and CNY in the NFL) (PS; Herbert)

New York Giants punter Riley Dixon made a rare entry into NFL highlight reels this week with a 71-yard punt.

The former Syracuse football player kicked the longest punt of his pro career Sunday when he boomed the ball over the head of Philadelphia Eagles returner Jalen Reagor. Dixon was reportedly standing around the Giants' 10-yard line when he punted the ball, which hit the Eagles' 15-yard line before rolling to a stop on the six.

Dixon, in his fifth NFL season, previously had a long of 68 yards in his rookie season with the Denver Broncos. His 71-yard punt is the second longest in the league this season.

Jonathan Up for Witten Man of the Year Award - Syracuse University Athletics (cuse.com)

A leader on and off the field, senior defensive lineman Kingsley Jonathan has been named a semifinalist for the Jason Witten Man of the Year Award.

Jonathan, who originally hails from Lagos, Nigeria, is heavily active in a number of initiatives to better his fellow student-athletes and the Syracuse community. One-of-20 semifinalists, the award is the first college football honor to focus primarily on a player's leadership both on and off the field.

Jonathan has been an advocate for his fellow student-athletes with the NCAA as part of the NCAA Division I Autonomy process. He's 1-of-15 Division I athletes with voting power in NCAA rule changes. He's just the fourth ACC football student-athlete in the history of this process to represent all athletes. He also is part of the ACC Search Advisory Committee, where he's one-of-five student-athletes on the advisory board in the search process for the next commissioner. He is also a member of the Syracuse Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Final Games, Improvements and Unpredictability: SU Player Takeaways – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Shults)

On Tuesday night, Syracuse tight end Aaron Hackett, running back Sean Tucker and defensive lineman Kingsley Jonathan talked to members of the media. For Tucker, as a freshman, this season has been much different than for seniors Hackett and Jonathan.

Now with a new quarterback in freshman JaCobian Morgan, Tucker says practice has been the most important element to the offense being on the same page.

“It’s just the reps and meetings and practice,” Tucker said. “It’s a lot of opportunities, for like us and our quarterbacks.”

Tucker started the season as an afterthought in the running back room. Now, the Maryland native is averaging over five yards per carry and seems to be on track to be an integral part of SU’s offense throughout his collegiate career.

On the Same Page

Hackett said that prior to the season, the team had sit-down meetings to discuss what everyone had to do to ensure Syracuse was able to avoid COVID-19 exposure this season. So far, SU hasn’t had a positive coronavirus case within its football program in months, and has played every game on time.

Fuente vs Beamer - how does Fu stack up? (RX; HM)

Fuente vs Beamer - how does Fu stack up?

I thought I was done with this after the "Fuente hot seat" article, but apparently not. Hokie fans are hungry for a return to the ACC Championship Game, if not the playoffs. You have to love a passionate fan base. They don't call it fan-tasy for nothing!

Of course, dreams don't win championships. What is realistic for Virginia Tech football? In Blacksburg, the Gold Standard is Frank Beamer. Even though he didn't actually win a national championship at Virginia Tech, he did play for one - and a bunch of other "New Year's Six" Bowls, too! How does Fuente compare to Beamer? We'll look at five criteria often used.

Win-Loss Record.
If Fuente has any hope of staying in Blacksburg as long as Beamer did, he'll need to compare favorably in terms of wins and losses. Does he? Let's take a look at the last four years under Frank Beamer versus the first four years under Justin Fuente:

Wake Forest-Duke football game off due to combination of positive coronavirus cases, injuries (myfox8.com)

Wake Forest University’s Nov. 21 football game against Duke has been called off.

Wake Forest University released the following information on Tuesday night:

Wake Forest has notified the ACC and Duke University that the Demon Deacons will not be able to play on Nov. 21 due to a combination of positive cases, quarantine of close contacts and injuries. In abundance of caution, Wake Forest will not hold team activities or practice on Wednesday and Thursday.

ACC rescheduling football games after Miami players test positive for COVID-19

“Our number one priority is the health and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches and staff,” Director of Athletics John Currie said. “I’m so proud of how our team has faced the unprecedented challenges of 2020. We are blessed with world class medical care and guidance thanks to Wake Forest Baptist Health and Dr. Chris Miles, and we look forward to resuming activities as soon as is appropriate.”

College football odds, picks for Week 12 in ACC: Hugh Freeze, Liberty set for shootout with NC State (cbssports.com; Patterson)

The news that South Carolina relieved Will Muschamp of his duties as head football coach has dominated the college football conversation, not just for what it means for the Gamecocks but also the expectations for a coaching carousel season that's loaded with uncertainty given the ongoing pandemic and rapidly approaching Early Signing Period.

So what does South Carolina's coaching search have to do with the ACC in Week 12? Well, it's the stage for one of the hottest coaching candidates of the season and the conference has played a key role in how he and his team have been viewed across the national landscape. Hugh Freeze leads undefeated Liberty to Raleigh on Saturday night to play NC State in a game that provides the opportunity for the Flames to improve to 3-0 against the ACC in 2020. Liberty has won the previous two games, against Syracuse and Virginia Tech, on the road, and to complete the three-game sweep against Power Five opponents would be quite a statement. It would not only continue to draw attention to Hugh Freeze as a potential target for a Power Five job but Liberty as one of the top teams in the country outside of the Power Five.

Syracuse University plans to reopen Jan. 25 despite coronavirus surge. Fingers crossed (PS; Mulder)

Syracuse University still plans to resume in-person classes Jan. 25 despite a recent surge of coronavirus cases that forced it to prematurely close classrooms.

It will be challenging, but not impossible, for SU to stick with its reopening plan if coronavirus activity in Onondaga County is as widespread in January as it is now, said Mike Haynie, an SU vice chancellor. “The bigger question is, 'Is our campus community willing to sacrifice and do the things necessary to come back safely?”

SU ended in-person classes Nov. 11, two weeks earlier than scheduled, because of a big wave of positive cases.

“Local conditions on the ground are going to be one of the factors that drive our decision-making moving forward,” he said. “We plan, we stick to that plan, but we are also willing to adapt and pivot from that plan if necessary.”

Haynie blamed the school’s decision to halt in-person classes early on Halloween gatherings that fueled a surge of coronavirus cases.
