Welcome to National Sardines Day!

No other edible fish is as prevalent as the sardine, and sardines are one of the most eaten foods in the world. The small, oily fish, which we celebrate today on National Sardines Day, belongs to the Clupeidae family. The name sardine dates back to the fifteenth century, likely coming from the island of Sardinia in the Mediterranean Sea, an area around which sardines were once prevalent. Sardines are still abundant in the Mediterranean, as well as in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

Sardines can be eaten fresh—being grilled, smoked, or pickled—but they usually are canned because the fresh variety perishes quickly. Prior to canning, they are washed, beheaded, either steam-cooked or deep-fried, and then dried. They are often packed in butter, mustard, water, olive oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, chili sauce, or tomato sauce. The end result is a convenient, inexpensive, and versatile food. They are put on toast and crackers, used to top salads, and part of main courses.

Dino Babers: What must be different in 2021 for Syracuse offense (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers still believes his offensive scheme can work in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Five years into his tenure at the helm of the Orange, Babers has seen his veer-and-shoot system grind to a halt down the stretch of the 2020 season.

SU (1-8, 1-7 ACC) has scored just one touchdown over the last two games, didn't convert a third down until the final play of its 30-0 loss at Louisville on Friday night, and will likely be outmatched in the final two contests of the year versus North Carolina State and No. 2 Notre Dame. Through nine games, Syracuse ranks 121st of 127 teams that have played at least one game this year with 16.2 points per contest.

"If you look around, this offense is still around the country and it's still doing fantastic things," Babers said during a virtual press conference on Monday. "I think there comes a point where you do have to adapt and improvise based off your situation and your conference. ... And I think like any good teacher -- and a teacher and a coach is the same thing -- you need to go back and study your gameplan and make sure you're doing everything that is not only cutting edge but is giving your students their best chance to be successful."

NC State opens as 15-point favorite against Syracuse (backingthepack.com; Muma)

There may not be another team in college football that’s been hit as hard by attrition as Syracuse this year, and at this point, it doesn’t look like the Orange have anything left in the tank. If the whole team wanted to opt out now, I wouldn’t blame them.

NC State opened as a 15-point road favorite against Syracuse, and that alone tells you plenty about what the Orange have been through. Syracuse has lost six straight games, including a 30-0 defeat at Louisville on Friday night.

Syracuse first-string quarterback Tommy DeVito hasn’t played since early October, and the team has a rough situation at offensive line as well. The Orange have only scored more than 24 points in a game once this year—that came in a 38-point outburst against Georgia Tech, which is also the only game Syracuse has won.

The Orange have been limited to 14 points or fewer in three consecutive games, so this is a good opportunity for NC State’s defense to build on its performance against Liberty.

Five facts about NC State's Week 10 opponent: Syracuse (247sports.com; Clark)

1.) Syracuse (1-8, 1-7 ACC) is last in the ACC in scoring offense.

The Orange have been awful offensively all season, averaging 16.2 points per game, which ranks dead last in the conference. The Cuse have scored less than 20 points in five of its nine games, and its season-high points-wise is 24, which it scored in a home loss against Duke last month. Syracuse is coming off its worst offensive performance of the season in a 30-0 loss to Louisville. The Orange managed 137 yards on 41 offensive plays.

2.) The Orange have been ravaged by injuries.

Sound familiar? It should after what the Wolfpack went through in 2019, and to a lesser extent what's happened this season. Redshirt junior quarterback Tommy Devito's missed the last five games, while the Orange are also without its top three running backs, and five to six offensive linemen have consistently missed time.

The Vulnerability of a Syracuse QB: Are Game Reps Worth Potential Injury? (SI; Payne)

There are two games left, but the Syracuse Orange 2020 football season is effectively over. In addition to nine defeats (six of them coming consecutively), there's been a lot lost along the way. Most notable has been the injuries forcing three different quarterbacks from games this season. Two of which required changes behind center the following week.

The most recent of those sidelining hits came Saturday when true freshman signal-caller JaCobian Morgan was blindsided by a Louisville pass rusher. The third quarter smash ended Morgan's night and caused some to speculate whether the 18-year-old would require hospitalization. Syracuse head coach Dino Babers provided the latest update on Morgan's health during his Monday press conference.

"Really don't know yet," Babers said. "We really push it back to as late on Monday as possible because the longer time they get to heal, the better the diagnosis is. So I really won't know until the very end of this day, starting into tomorrow."

Syracuse coach Dino Babers previews NC State: Three observations from weekly zoom call (cnycentral.com; Hauswirth)

There's now two games left in Syracuse University's 2020 regular season, as the Orange prepare for the North Carolina State Wolfpack this weekend.

NC State, now 6-3 overall and 5-3 in ACC play, is coming off a thrilling win over No. 21 Liberty after blocking the potential game-winning field goal attempt by the Flames.

On the flipside, the Orange is coming off its sixth consecutive loss, falling on the road at Louisville, 30-0.

North Carolina State is at 14.5-point favorite entering Saturday's tilt with Syracuse, a Noon start televised on the ACC Network.

Syracuse is, of course, playing shorthanded with opt-outs and injuries up and down the roster.

At 1-8 overall and 1-7 in ACC play, it's been a season full of growing pains and unforeseen conflicts that have resulted in one of Dino Babers' worst seasons as a head coach.

Syracuse’s Dino Babers trying to stay positive, not easy (AP; Kekis)

Syracuse coach Dino Babers says he’s focused on trying to remain positive late in this down season, and it’s not an easy task in the aftermath of the Orange’s sixth straight loss and word that one of the team’s most renowned players of yesteryear has entered hospice.

“It’s going to be very hard. It is a test,” Babers said Monday. “Just like the crucible is a test of wills, it’s a test, and it’s testing my faith. And I plan on winning the test by staying positive, knowing that there’s going to be a light at the end of the tunnel, that this is not all for naught.”

The Orange (1-8, 1-7 Atlantic Coast Conference) lost 30-0 at Louisville on Friday night and over the weekend the team learned that Hall of Famer Floyd Little had entered hospice in his struggle against cancer.

It’s a blow to Babers and his family, who have developed a special bond with “Uncle Floyd.”

“Floyd’s always been like the bridge for me to the past at Syracuse,” Babers said, his voice breaking. “He’s opened doors for me … with the legacy that’s going to continue on. He’s a special guy.”

Aftermath: Louisville Vs Syracuse (cardinalsportszone.com; Barbour)

Louisville Football needed a big win against a struggling Syracuse team Friday night. The Orange were undermanned, starting a true freshman QB and missing numerous players on defense and the offensive line. UofL, on the other hand, was finally playing with their full deck of Cards, minus Javian Hawkins, who opted out to prepare for the NFL Draft, and the injured Marshon Ford. A win turned out to be in the Cards as UofL squeezed the Orange 30-0.

It was far from a perfect performance on offense, but it was still a very encouraging one. Offensively, Malik Cunningham played a good game. Unfortunately, he did have two interceptions, but Malik did throw for 219 yards and a touchdown. He also had 21 yards rushing and a TD on the ground.

45 years ago: Peter Frampton recorded ‘Baby I Love Your Way’ at Upstate NY concert (PS; $; Herbert)

Here’s a rock-and-roll flashback: 45 years ago, Peter Frampton recorded his hit song “Baby, I Love Your Way” at a small Upstate New York concert.

The English guitarist and singer-songwriter, previously known for his work with Humble Pie and the Herd, performed to less than 1,000 fans at SUNY Plattsburgh’s Memorial Hall on Nov. 22, 1975. Tickets were sold for $2 to students and $4 to the general public.

Frampton had already released the solo album “Frampton,” featuring the songs “Show Me the Way” and “Baby, I Love Your Way,” but he hadn’t reached superstar status in the U.S. yet. He recorded several concerts that year and included the Plattsburgh recording of “Baby, I Love Your Way” on his multi-platinum live album “Frampton Comes Alive!”

“Frampton Comes Alive!” put Frampton and his famed talk-box on the map, topping the Billboard 200 charts for 10 weeks and becoming the best selling album of 1976. The live versions of “Baby I Love Your Way,” “Show Me the Way” and “Do You Feel Like We Do” all reached the top 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The album sold more than eight million copies in the U.S. and was the best selling live album for more than 20 years.

“Everybody in the world has ‘Frampton Comes Alive,’” Mike Myers joked in the 1993 movie “Wayne’s World 2.” “If you lived in the suburbs you were issued it. It came in the mail with samples of Tide.”
