Welcome to Arabic Language Day!

Arabic (العربية) is a Semitic language, like Hebrew and Aramaic. Around 260 million people use it as their first language. Many more people can also understand it as a second language. It is written with the Arabic alphabet, which is written from right to left, like Hebrew. Since it is so widely spoken throughout the world, it is one of the six official languages of the UN, the others being English, French, Spanish, Russian and Chinese.

ACC recruiting rankings: Where is Syracuse after early NSD? (247sports.com; Shults)

Syracuse football signed the majority of its 2021 recruiting class on Wednesday, including top defensive commit Duce Chestnut, top offensive commit Enrique Cruz, and quarterback Justin Lamson. In total, 19 players inked national letters of intent to join the Orange.

One of the biggest areas of focus for Syracuse was the offensive line. This past season, Syracuse’s 38 sacks given up were the worst in the Atlantic Coast Conference. And while freshman running back Sean Tucker was one of few bright spots for the 1-10 Orange, Syracuse also gained the fewest yards on the ground per game out of any ACC team.

So far, Syracuse has signed five offensive linemen.

“These guys are big guys, when you watch them on tape they can bend and they can really move,” head coach Dino Babers said. “But the key is making sure we still have the physicality that we want. And we've got to work hard on getting that. That group, the O-line group, the D-line group, the entire football team but really those big cats to make sure that they’re as physical as they can be. Because that's the key to the football game.

Syracuse football 2021 class is a ‘really good batch,’ Dino Babers says (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers is optimistic about his 2021 cycle.

Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers, in speaking about his 2021 recruiting class, says that he would love to sign top-25 cycles, and that’s a goal, but he adds, “don’t underestimate the little guy.”

Wednesday represented early national signing day for the Orange, and Babers landed official national letters of intent from 19 high-school players.

The ‘Cuse previously had 21 verbal commitments in this class. An article from 247Sports reporter Stephen Bailey says that defensive lineman Jaelin Moss plans to sign in February of 2021, while defensive end Hayden Nelson has de-committed from the Orange.

As of Wednesday late afternoon, rated the ‘Cuse 2021 class at No. 49 nationally, whereas 247Sports says the team’s cycle is No. 53 across the country and No. 12 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Of those guys who have inked their NLIs, 11 are offensive players and eight suit up on defense, per a review of recruiting Web sites. When Moss signs, that will push the total to nine defensive players.

Babers, in a Zoom call with media members, noted that the 2021 class features two of the top-five prospects in New York state, and it’s the second-highest-ranked cycle so far in Babers’ tenure on the Hill, he says.

Syracuse Football Top 25 Players of All-Time: No. 9 Marvin Harrison (itlh; Peelman)

Syracuse Football has had a long history of success. We look back at some of the best players to play at Syracuse University. Up next, No. 9: Marvin Harrison.

Syracuse Football has had a heck of a lot of great players in its history. You know we’re getting to the best of the best on this list of the Top 25 Syracuse Football Players of All-Time when you start coming up on names you’ve heard of. Names who are in the Pro Hall of Fame due to to their superstar play. Marvin Harrison, who is next on our list, fit that bill to a tee. Though most will remember him for his time with the Indianapolis Colts, most don’t really know about how dominant he was at Syracuse first.

Harrison was a speedy wideout who could catch just about any ball that came his way. Whether it was over his head, along the sideline, over the middle in coverage, he would make the play. He was a quarterback’s best friend and could be relied on to not only make a big play, but also constantly move the chains and get the team down the field. In every sense of the word, he was a superstar.

After redshirting his freshman year on campus, Harrison quickly joined the starting rotation in 1993, his sophomore year, replacing star wide receiver Qadry Ismail, also on this list, who made the jump to the NFL. Harrison quickly made a name for himself with 41 receptions for 813 yards (3rd overall in Big East), and seven touchdowns (2nd overall in Big East), according to Sports-Reference.com.

Syracuse Football Top 25 Players of All-Time: No. 11 Don McPherson (itlh; Peelman)

Syracuse Football has had a long history of success. We look back at some of the best players to play at Syracuse University. Up next, No. 11: Don McPherson.

Most fans when they think of quarterbacks who played for Syracuse Football the first name that often comes to mind is Donovan McNabb. There’s nothing wrong with that as McNabb was an incredible athlete in his time at Syracuse, but it does take away from just how good his predecessor Don McPherson was.

McPherson played for Syracuse Football from 1984-1987. He was great passing the ball, but what a lot of people don’t remember is he also rushed the ball a ton as well and often to great success. A good way to describe him is a more polished form of Eric Dungey (also on this list). The only knock on McPherson’s career is his lack of a good pro career after Syracuse.

Though McPherson didn’t start games until his sophomore year, he quickly made a name for himself. In his sophomore year, he completed 85 passes for 1,469 yards and 12 touchdowns, with only five interceptions, according to Sports-Reference.com. He also rushed 157 times for 489 yards (3.1 yards per carry) and seven touchdowns.

In his junior year, he picked up right where he left off, completing 142 passes for 1,827 yards, 12 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also rushed 191 times for 523 yards (2.7 yards per carry) and six touchdowns.

Syracuse Football Top 25 Players of All-Time: No. 12 Joe Morris (itlh; Peelman)

Syracuse Football has had a long history of success. We look back at some of the best players to play at Syracuse University. Up next, No. 12: Joe Morris.

Syracuse Football legend Joe Morris was one heck of a running back. This man was a bruising running back that just made play, after play, after play. During his time at Syracuse from 1978-1981, he set records that no one at Syracuse may ever touch again.

The crazy thing about Morris is that he followed in the footsteps of former Syracuse Football greats Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, and Larry Csonka, yet he did not let the pressure of being Syracuse’s starting running back phase him. When offered the number 44 jersey like those of his predecessors by Coach Dick McPherson (Coach Mac), he turned it down as he felt unworthy, instead opting for the No. 47 jersey instead, according to the Rochester Business Journal. As it turned out, he didn’t need it, as he more than made a name for himself in that No. 47 jersey anyways.

Morris made SU opponents fear the running game. When Morris was healthy, you knew Syracuse was going to run the ball consistently and effectively. It was like you knew the train was coming and you couldn’t stop it.

ACC commissioner John Swofford defends football, says title game complaints ring 'hollow'

ACC commissioner John Swofford pushed back against the notion that the conference had given Clemson and Notre Dame last weekend off as a way to protect their College Football Playoff chances, telling ESPN the complaint "rings pretty hollow."

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has been critical of the ACC's decision to give both teams an open date the week before the ACC championship game, based on a reshuffling of its league schedule as a result of several postponements.

To date, both Clemson and Notre Dame have played 10 total games. That is the same number as Alabama and Florida, who will play Saturday in the SEC championship game. Through last weekend's games, the ACC has played 85 of 96 scheduled games. No league has played as many games as the ACC.

2020 ACC FB TV Coverage (RX; HM)

2020 ACC FB TV Coverage

Well, there are no more 2020 regular-season games on 6-day hold, so let's look at the full season to see how good the exposure was for ACC football this year...

Networks
ACC football games can be on pretty much any of the ESPN family of television networks, but this season there weren't any on ESPNU, ESPNews, ESPN Deportes, or even ACC Network Extra. No, they all appeared on either ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ACCN, or the ACC's RSNs (Regional Sports Networks).

ESPN/26
ACCN40
RSN16

19 games on ABC is great for exposure. By comparison, the Big Ten had only 14 games on ABC and Fox combined (albeit in a shorter season), while the SEC had only 12 broadcast games (mostly CBS, with one game on ABC). The ACC Network had the bulk of the games, and the conference continues to pay for old mistakes in the form of 16 games on the RSNs - some of which fans weren't able to watch!

Bad News: the ACC's #1 non-conference opponent, Notre Dame, is stronger than they were when the 5-games per year scheduling agreement began.

Good News: recruiting at UNC, Pitt, UVA, and Boston College are all up, too.

Could proud independent Notre Dame ever join the ACC permanently? (ESPN; Adelson)

For what feels like centuries, we have debated perhaps the greatest mystery in the known universe: What would happen if (gasp!) Notre Dame ever joined a conference?

We finally have our answer.

College football did not spin off its axis when the best-known independent football program in the country joined a conference for the first time in school history, an arrangement for the 2020 season necessitated by the pandemic. If anything, the one-year football partnership between the Fighting Irish and the ACC could not have gone more perfectly for both sides.

Notre Dame went undefeated in the regular season; is ranked No. 2 and is well-positioned to play in the College Football Playoff; had its highest ratings on NBC in 15 years; and is getting ready to play for the first conference championship in school history.

Notre Dame has everything it wants, so why would it stay in the ACC long term? (yahoo.com; Wetzel)

Clearly, Notre Dame’s short-term, pandemic-inspired, shotgun marriage with the ACC has been a success for both sides.

The Irish, briefly facing a gutted 2020 schedule, are 10-0 and likely headed to the College Football Playoff no matter what happens in Saturday’s ACC title game against Clemson.

Meanwhile, the ACC has found a rival for Dabo Swinney’s Tigers while enjoying the massive television bump Notre Dame football can provide — Saturday’s audience should be a record for the title game.

That’s left plenty of people wondering if this should be a more permanent union — namely, should Notre Dame join the ACC for good?

No. Notre Dame shouldn’t.

And just as importantly, the ACC shouldn’t want them.

These two are far better off in the friend zone, linked but not joined. The benefit they provide each other is considerable, but with limits.

Every conference wants a program such as Notre Dame — a great brand that generates television ratings and ticket sales. The Big Ten tried to get them for decades. The Irish are so coveted, the ACC has been willing to accept most of the school’s other athletic teams in exchange for an annual five-game schedule agreement in football.
