Pink Flamingo Day is dedicated to the kitschy lawn ornament that became a pop culture icon during the second half of the twentieth century. The pink flamingo was designed by Don Featherstone in 1957, while he was working at Union Products in Leominster, Massachusetts. In 2006, Union Products stopped producing the flamingos, and the following year Leominster's mayor, Dean Mazzaralla, proclaimed June 23, Pink Flamingo Day. The copyright for the flamingos was purchased by HMC International in 2007, and in 2010 it was purchased by Cado manufacturing, which continues to produce the flamingos. Sadly, Mr. Featherstone passed away in 2015, one day before Pink Flamingo Day.

South Carolina DL DJ Jackson: Official visit to Syracuse 'really bumped them up on my list' (247sports; $; Bailey)
Syracuse football made a strong impression on Class of 2022 defensive lineman DJ Jackson during his official visit over the weekend. A 6-foot-2, 270-pound rising senior at Sumter High School in South Carolina, Jackson got a chance to bond with members of the coaching staff including head coach Dino Babers, defensive coordinator Tony White and defensive line coach Vinson Reynolds.
He was hosted by a pair of veteran defensive linemen in Josh Black and Curtis Harper, touring campus and learning about academics during the day before going out with SU players in the evening. Jackson ultimately left Central New York with a firsthand experience to pair with the heavy recruiting pitch SU's staff has delivered since early March.

Allowing NCAA student-athletes to maximize NIL rights for financial gain is going to be a fascinating process to watch play out as a whole new world of opportunity opens up for them.
While it’s interesting to think of current athletes at Syracuse University that will have opportunities to cash in on commercial endorsements, jersey sales, social media interactions and whatever else falls under new NIL regulations, I’ve been thinking about some star SU athletes of the past that would have benefitted from NIL rights.
Here is one man’s Top 10 list:

Mangakahia, the fastest player to 1,000 career points in Syracuse women’s basketball history, was a next level women’s basketball star. She electrified in her style of play as SU’s all-time leader in assists, leading the country in that statistic twice during her career, and a two-time All-ACC First Team selection.
Her battle against Stage 2 breast cancer in 2019 offered an inspirational story that put her on a new level with fans.
Mangakahia is also a keen user of social media who could have established a profitable presence in that space while at SU.

Seven Yellow Jackets Tabbed Preseason All-ACC by Phil Steele (ramblinwreck.com)
First-team running back Jahmyr Gibbs (Dalton, Ga./Dalton) headlines Georgia Tech’s seven representatives on Phil Steele College Football Preview’s 2021 preseason all-Atlantic Coast Conference team, which was published on Tuesday.
In addition to being tabbed as a first-team running back, Gibbs is also third-team selection as a kickoff returner. The other Yellow Jackets named to Phil Steele’s preseason all-ACC team include four more third-team honorees – junior linebacker Quez Jackson (Fort Valley, Ga./Peach County), senior offensive lineman Ryan Johnson (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy), long snapper Cade Long (Hickson, Tenn./Baylor School) and junior defensive back Juanyeh Thomas (Niceville, Fla./Niceville) – and a pair of fourth-team picks – sophomore defensive lineman Jordan Domineck (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins) and junior linebacker Ayinde Eley (Olney, Md./Good Counsel).

ACC commissioner gives statement on Tuesday's CFP meeting (theclemsoninsider.com; Staff)
The College Football Playoff’s board of managers met on Tuesday in Dallas to explore more into the expansion of the playoff.
The CFP board authorized the management committee to begin a summer review phase that will engage other important voices about expanding the playoff from four teams to 12. This will include many people on campuses, such as student-athletes, athletics directors, faculty athletics representatives, coaches, and university presidents and chancellors.
The board will reconvene in September to discuss what they learned in this phase of the expansion process.
ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips gave the following statement about Tuesday’s CFP Board of Managers Meeting on behalf of the conference.
“The ACC appreciates the work by the sub-group of the CFP management committee as we continue the evaluation of future postseason formats. Today’s presentation to the full Board of Managers was an important step in the process, and we now move into the listening and feedback stage. As a league, we look forward to the continued conversations surrounding what’s best for postseason college football, and most importantly, the student-athletes that participate. It’s undeniable how successful the CFP has been since its formation, and it’s important we ensure any future evolutions will only enhance the college football regular season and postseason.”

Lake Ontario 55-inch monster muskie: ‘It came out of the water and tail danced like a tarpon would’ (PS; $; Figura)
The last time fishing buddies Frank Kohlbach, Jason Tessier and Chet McCarty had fished together was on May 1, the opening day of the walleye season.
“All three of us take out kids out fishing all the time,” Kohlbach said. “So, on Father’s Day, we told our families we wanted to fish together.”
The three anglers, all from Sandy Creek, got out Sunday on Lake Ontario’s Eastern Basin in Kohlbach’s boat, targeting walleye. They caught some walleye, but the fish of the day was a monster, 55-inch muskie – a fish that at one point “came out of the water and tail danced just like a tarpon would.”
The muskie was caught at around 1 p.m. when the three were trolling with eight poles out, using eight planner boards. The muskie hit a Flicker Minnow 11 purple flash, Kohlbach said.
“With all those poles and planer boards, I don’t know it didn’t get tangled up. We were lucky,” Kohlbach said.
Kohlbach said fortunately he and his friends had been fishing together a lot the past two years, and “we’re really dialed in as a team.”
To land the muskie, McCarty handled the pole, Tessier drove the boat and Kohlbach grabbed the net.
