Welcome to The Fall Equinox!

The First Day of Fall, also known as The Fall Equinox or Autumnal Equinox, takes place when the Sun crosses the celestial equator—an imaginary line in the sky directly above the earth's Equator—from North to the South. When the autumnal equinox occurs in the Northern Hemisphere, the vernal equinox occurs in the Southern Hemisphere. During this time the sun shines directly on the Equator, and the length of day and night is nearly equal. Days continue to shorten in the Northern Hemisphere as the earth's axis begins to tilt away from the sun, and days lengthen in the Southern Hemisphere as the opposite occurs there. With this, fall, which is the transition period from summer to winter, is started in the Northern Hemisphere. Temperatures begin to cool and leaves fall from deciduous trees.

The word "autumn" has Etruscan roots, and was used by the Romans before becoming the Latin word "autumnus". It was used sparingly in the Middle Ages, and came into wide use in the 16th century. Referring to the season as "harvest" was prevalent prior to the 16th century, and the use of the term "fall" has Germanic roots and became a widespread term used in England in the 16th century—deriving its name from the phrases "fall of the leaf" and "fall of the year." Although the term is now used less in England, it was brought by immigrants to North America and has remained in wide use there.

Orange Zone "In the Huddle" Syracuse football players call Friday's game a "personal" one (cnycentral.com; video; Singh)

Syracuse (2-1) wraps up their three game homestand against Liberty (3-0) on Friday 8 p.m. inside the Carrier Dome.

Returning players from last year’s team are calling this game a "personal" one. In 2020, Liberty came into the Carrier Dome and beat Syracuse 38-21 to win their first game ever against an ACC opponent.

Syracuse players, Mikel Jones, Kingsley Jonathan, Sean Tucker, and Marlowe Wax address the media on Tuesday after practice. The Syracuse University Athletics Department said that both quarterbacks, Tommy Devito and Garrett Shrader were not available to speak to the media.

In this segment of inside the huddle we hear what SU football players are saying as they prepare for week four of the 2021 season. It’s the final week before conference play starts.

Axe: SU football shouldn’t just restore No. 44. It needs a reboot (PS; Axe)

The rumbles are getting louder to restore the most hallowed number in the history of Syracuse University football.

The latest source of inspiration to put the legendary No.44 back in action comes from watching Syracuse running back Sean Tucker.

Tucker runs with a unique combination of power and speed that puts him in his own category. He has accumulated 993 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns in his young Syracuse career. Tucker is averaging nearly 5.3 yards per carry and has tacked on 261 receiving yards and a touchdown.

He certainly looks the part so far of what a revived No.44 could be for SU football.

Tucker agreed he would look good in Syracuse’s most hallowed number, recently posting an SU fan’s social media mockup of him in the 44 jersey to Instagram.

Well that's certainly a good sign, @Gumby_cuse. pic.twitter.com/Rz7MJBhvGT
— NunesMagician.com (@NunesMagician) September 20, 2021

“I’d be honored to wear it if I got the opportunity to wear it,” Tucker told syracuse.com earlier this month. “I’d definitely wear it for the legacy. Just the fact that you’d have three Hall of Famers, NFL players wear it. The greats — Jim Brown, Floyd Little and Ernie Davis. It would be a great honor to wear it.”

You know what?

It’s time for No.44 to come out of the rafters of the Carrier Dome.

It’s also time for Syracuse to embrace what the No.44 can be beyond the running back position.

Legendary Syracuse running back Floyd Little, Syracuse’s only three-time All-American and part of a holy trinity of 44′s with Jim Brown and Heisman winner Ernie Davis, said many times before his death earlier this year that he would rather see his old number on the field rather than collecting dust.

Syracuse Football Stock Up/Stock Down: Week Three – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Eads)

Syracuse moved to 2-1 over the weekend with a blowout win over I-90 rival UAlbany. These kinds of games are often referred to as stat sheet stuffer opportunities. For our purposes, these kinds of games are considered easy stock up fantasies. Let’s decipher whose stock is actually up and not just a one hit wonder performance. If you missed week two’s nominees click here.

STOCK UP

DL CODY ROSCOE

Yeah, the McNeese State transfer was on this list last week but his stock continues to ascend like an airplane. Roscoe followed up a seven tackle performance against Rutgers with a three sack outing against the Great Danes. The Texas native is getting more and more reps with Kingsley Jonathan still on the sideline. Defensive Coordinator Tony White has plenty of options to work with in the trenches.

QB TOMMY DEVITO

This isn’t based on the fifth year quarterback’s performance but rather optics. The New Jersey native didn’t play a single snap in the second half after earning the start on Saturday. This should lead critics to believe that DeVito will be the starting quarterback on Friday night against Liberty.

RB JARVEON HOWARD

The Mississippi native saw little no time before Saturday but he took advantage of the carries allotted to him against the Great Danes. Howard ran six times for 76 yards, a bulk of the output coming on a 50-yard burst. The Orange need to develop depth behind Sean Tucker for the treacherous ACC slate. Perhaps Howard is SU’s RB2 going forward.

WR DAMIEN ALFORD

The Canadien saw extended action against UAlbany with Taj Harris on the sideline. All the second year freshman did was house call his first career reception. Alford flashed his length and big play ability, burning the corner and reeling in a beautifully thrown deep ball from DeVito. Does the six-foot, five pass catcher get more reps as the season progresses? Maybe it’s just what the doctor ordered for this ‘Cuse offense.

WR DEVAUGHN COOPER

The Utep and Arizona transfer is probably someone you’ve never heard of. If you were a champ and kept Saturday’s game on for the second half, you saw Cooper slicing and dicing the UAlbany defense. The Los Angeles native caught the first three passes of his Syracuse career and racked up 26 yards in the process. His skillset is something that could be used in the slot on short yardage situations. Cooper’s game is comparable to former SU receiver Nykeim Johnson.

Series History: Syracuse and Liberty have played the last two seasons. Those were the only games in the series to date. The Orange won the first meeting 24-0 at Liberty. The Flames got revenge last season with a 38-21 triumph in the Dome. Friday night's game will be the rubber match.

Live Stats: LINK

Odds
: Point spread: Liberty -6, Over-under: 52.5 points

ESPN Matchup Predictor: Syracuse has a 46.8% chance to win.

Syracuse enters the 2021 season following back to back losing campaigns. After a 10 win 2018 season, the Orange has gone 5-7 and 1-10 in the last two years. Getting back to a bowl game would be significant for the program's direction. A season opening win over Ohio was a step in the right direction. However, Syracuse missed a chance to start the year 2-0 with a loss to Rutgers in the home opener but bounced back with a 62-24 win over Albany.

Liberty has started the season 3-0. The Flames opened the season with a 48-7 win over FCS Campbell. The next week, in Liberty's lone road game to date, the Flames topped Troy 21-13. Last week, Liberty beat Old Dominion 45-17. The Flames are led by quarterback Malik Willis. Through three games, Willis is completing 71% of his passes, has thrown for 613 yards with seven touchdowns, no interceptions and rushed for 225 yards with four more scores.

Here's why Syracuse football's linebackers will be key against Liberty - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

Syracuse is coming off a rout of an FCS opponent, just as they have in four previous seasons under Dino Babers. The Orange have cruised in those five games, with Saturday’s 62-24 manhandling of Albany equaling just about the average margin of victory of 39.4 points.

But, in each of the four previous campaigns with an FCS opponent on the slate (there was no FCS opponent on the 2020 schedule), the Orange have struggled in their subsequent game when returning to FBS play. Here’s the year-by-year breakdown:

  • 2016 – Colgate 33-7 win, Louisville 62-28 loss
  • 2017 – Central Connecticut State 50-7 win, Middle Tennessee State 30-23 loss
  • 2018 – Wagner 62-10 win, Florida State 30-7 win
  • 2019 – Holy Cross 41-3 win, North Carolina State 16-10 loss
  • 2021 – Albany 62-24 win, Liberty ???
In 2016, SU ran into the national coming out party of star quarterback Lamar Jackson. Going to have to file that as an acceptable loss in Babers’ debut campaign. Two years later, the Orange pulled away in the second half for one of their ten wins against a talented, but disappointing Florida State team that finished 5-7.

But those 2017 and 2019 games…

Against Middle Tennessee State in 2017, the Orange held a 16-9 lead just past the midpoint of the third quarter, but gave up scores on the next three drives. Special teams mistakes were costly during that span, as a fumbled punt return led to the first touchdown and a missed field goal kept points off SU’s side of the scoreboard before the second score.

In 2019, N. C. State’s defense proved to be too tough for the Orange, whose first eight possessions resulted in a missed field goal and seven punts. Syracuse finally broke through with a pair of scoring drives late in the game, but it was not enough to overcome a stifling Wolfpack run defense.

Which brings us to Friday night’s contest against Liberty under the new lights that debuted this week. The Orange welcomed the Flames last year, as well, and proved to be welcoming hosts after scoring the opening touchdown. Liberty needed just two plays to get into the end zone to knot the game, starting a 35-7 run that effectively ended the game late in the third quarter before coasting to a 38-21 win over SU.

The Flames did a lot of damage on big plays, as they had touchdown runs of 75 and 52 yards to go with a 36-yard scoring pass. Liberty hung 520 yards on SU under the direction of quarterback Malik Willis, who completed 16-of-20 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown while adding ten carries for 70 yards and another score on the ground.

Syracuse Football Preparing to Face the Liberty Flames Under Friday Night Lights (bcsnn.com)

It'll be Friday night lights, a national audience as one of just four nationally televised games on Friday night, and the toughest test yet when Liberty comes to town on Friday night.

The Flames are the stiffest competition yet, according to national pollsters, as they're just one place from cracking the top-25 of the AP poll heading into the game.

The Orange are looking to continue their past success on Friday nights. 'Cuse has won five of their last seven Friday games and holds a 6-3 Friday record under head coach Dino Babers. The streak includes 'Cuse's 27-24 win against No. 2 Clemson in 2017 and the 2018 Camping World victory against West Virginia as its most notable wins over that time. Syracuse has two Friday night games on the 2021 slate, including a Oct. 15 matchup against Clemson in the Carrier Dome. The Orange are 15-6 (.714) in weekday games since beating Kansas State in the 2010 Pinstripe Bowl.

While it will be a shorter week of preparation for the Orange, Coach Babers knows his players will be excited for the opportunity.

"The players need to be fresh. The key thing is to make sure we get our practice in on Monday and we'll get our practice in tomorrow and then back off of these guys and try to get them to the game on Friday as fresh as they can be because they'll be playing in front of their friends," Babers said. "It's that Friday night game, everybody that plays a Saturday night game gets to watch while they're sitting in the hotels. All of their buddies will see them, all their high school buddies, all their college buddies, coaches across the country, other coaches calling coaches, head coaches calling head coaches. It's a fabulous opportunity to put our program in the limelight."

Syracuse goes for its second-straight win after defeating UAlbany, 62-24, last Saturday. The Orange offense averaged 9.4 yards per play, which is the second-highest single-game total in program history, while the defense limited the Great Danes to just 135 yards of total offense. Still, Coach Babers feels his team can improve.

"We're really excited about being 2-1," Babers said. "I thought there were parts of the game that were extremely clean and then, obviously, some things were not so clean – penalties and whatnot. But I do believe our young men played extremely hard."

Liberty looks for repeat victory at Syracuse Friday night (wfxrtv.com; DeGuzman)

Liberty is on a short week preparing for a Friday night showdown at the Carrier Dome against Syracuse, marking the third straight year that the two have met on the football field.

And this meeting may be the biggest game for the Flames so far in the series.

“I don’t consider this a huge rivalry game right now, but I will say it is a great opportunity,” head coach Hugh Freeze said. “I’m sure they’re not happy that we were able to beat them at their place last year. So, I’m sure we will get their best attention. “

Liberty caught the attention of the nation when the Flames defeated Syracuse at the Carrier Dome in 2020, which marked the program’s first ever win over an ACC opponent. But Freeze is preparing for a tough challenge from the Orange defense that’s ranked fourth in the country.

“It’s the same, same coordinator, same defense. They are just playing really well,” Freeze said. I’m sure last year when we played them, they were hurt with the COVID world, all the things that came with that, but they are fast. They are playing at a very high level right now defensively, it’s going to be a great test for us.”

Syracuse will look to contain Liberty quarterback Malik Willis, who accounted for six total touchdowns in Saturday’s win over Old Dominion. Half of four passing scores were caught by redshirt freshman C.J. Daniels.

“This Syracuse game is like fire in our eyes. I’m not saying that we’re taking this game more seriously than the other games but it’s a power five opponent and that’s our goal,” Daniels said. “We want to go out and show what we can do on live television.”

Liberty is favored to win Friday’s game, according to oddsmakers. But the Flames head coach isn’t buying into that mindset.

“That’s rat poison,” Freeze said. “I don’t know. I don’t have a comment on us being favored, I don’t feel like that. I just don’t see it that way.”

ACC Football Power Rankings, Week 4: Week 3 was a disaster (saturdayblitz.com; Pryor)

14. Florida State Seminoles (0-3, 0-1 ACC)

Considering the Seminoles have not started 0-3 since 1976, Florida State has officially hit rock bottom. After a gritty performance against Notre Dame, the Seminoles have been the complete opposite. FSU thought that garnett and gold would intimidate Jacksonville State — it did not.

The Seminoles did not look like they wanted to even be there against Wake Forest this weekend. Florida State never led and was shut out in the second half. It is obvious we put too much stock in how they played against the Irish, and Mike Norvell has his work cut out for him.

13. Miami Hurricanes (1-2)

The Hurricanes cannot blame the Alabama beatdown hangover on their 38-17 loss to Michigan State. The Hurricanes continually shot themselves in the foot offensively. D’Eriq King was responsible for all four of Miami’s turnovers, throwing two interceptions and losing two fumbles.

The wide receivers could not separate from Michigan State’s defensive backs, and the offensive line did not block very well in the running game.

Defensively, the line was pushed around by the Spartans’ offensive line.

12. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (1-2, 0-1)

The Yellow Jackets gave the Clemson Tigers all they could handle in their 14-8 loss on the road at Death Valley East. However, the game said as much about Clemson’s shortcomings as it does about Geoff Collins’ job turning the Yellow Jackets around.

The Yellow Jackets played well defensively and the offense outgained Clemson and did not make any critical mistakes. It is hard to know how many games Georgia Tech is going to win this season, but games like this are a confidence builder.

11. Syracuse Orange (2-1)

Unfortunately for Syracuse, they cannot play the Albany Greyhounds every week. The Orange’s 62-24 route of Albany is the way head coach Dino Babers and the Orange would love to play every Saturday. However, the ‘Cuse rarely has a talent advantage the way it did this past weekend.

If there is anything we learned about Syracuse, it’s that Garrett Schrader that gives the Orange the best chance to win games. Unlike Tommy DeVito, Schrader is a plus athlete in the running game which Syracuse needs because their offensive line is so bad.

10. Duke Blue Devils (2-1)

Duke played well for most of their 30-23 win against Northwestern at Wallace Wade on Saturday. The Devils played well in the first half but were shut out in the second half of their win. Head coach David Cutcliffe has to be pleased with the play of quarterback Gunnar Holmberg.

If nothing else, Holmberg is playing significantly better than Chase Brice was this time last season. No shade on Brice. With Mataeo Durant running as well as he has so far this season, Duke can improve from the disaster that was 2020.

9. Louisville Cardinals (2-1)

The Cardinals won a thriller of a game against the UCF Knights 42-35 Friday night at home. This game featured four lead changes and over 900 yards of offense. They have rebounded after getting trounced by Mississippi to open the weekend.

Malik Cunningham stole the show with 265 passing yards, 99 rushing yards, and three total touchdowns. Without Javian Hawkins and Chitarius Atwell, Cunningham has to be as lights out as he was on Friday for the Cardinals to be successful.

ACC Football: It’s still your father’s football conference (augusta.com; German)

Nice try ACC, you sold us a bill of goods, and we foolishly accepted it.

Two teams in the preseason Top-10, with a promise that Miami was back, Florida State turning the corner. For years it’s been all about how much better the SEC and Big Ten were and that ACC football was simply something to do until November.

Clemson’s offense is still adjusting to life without Trevor Lawrence, but still the Tigers have major credibility in college football. And for the rest of the conference, well, let’s just say the more things change, the more they stay the same.

And it didn’t take long for ACC football to rear its ugly head.

Clemson lost to SEC opponent Georgia right out the gate in week one. The Tigers kept it close , but the flagship program of the conference did lose to the second- or third-best squad from the backyard bully conference.

North Carolina, the proposed league’s next super team, looked inept in its season opener at unranked Virginia Tech, a loss that didn’t look good then and still doesn’t.

Miami, turning the corner, the league proclaimed. OK. The Hurricanes got bludgeoned by Alabama in game one, followed that up with a completely underwhelming win over Appalachian State. The corner that Miami turned was a brick wall named Michigan State, with the ‘Canes getting clobbered by the Spartans.

As for the other Sunshine State team, on the edge of returning to prominence FSU, the edge was more like the ledge, and the Seminoles fell to the street Saturday, losing to a more talented Wake Forest squad, 35-14.

And it wasn’t that close.

But enough bashing FSU and Miami. Pittsburgh scored 41 points on Saturday, and lost to MAC foe Western Michigan, 44-41. Virginia puts up 39 points against UNC and loses by 20, surrendering nearly 700 yards of total offense, in a contest that resembled more of a video game than big-time college football.

If the conference is ever going to overcome the belief that it’s purely a one-trick pony, that trick being basketball, then some other teams have to step up.

For a decade, Clemson has been the only football program separating the ACC from the AAC. While the Tigers are struggling, they still are the one program that’s keeping the conference relevant.

The conference can say what they want, but until Miami and FSU return to being “The U” and “the ‘Noles,” then it probably doesn’t matter what the rest of the league does.

Until that happens, it is just “much ado about nothing” regarding ACC football.

2021 Opportunities to Save Face (RX; HM)

You forgot the Syracuse-Liberty game. Liberty is the toughest team any ACC schools plays OOC this week; best opportunity to make the ACC look good.

2021 Opportunities to Save Face

ACC football teams have not fared well against other P5 conference teams this season (3-7 so far, including 4 losses to SEC teams). At this point, is there anything the ACC can do to "save face"? Glad you asked - yes, there is! Before we discuss that, let's look at the remaining non-conference games...
Sep. 25:Missouri @ Boston College
Kansas @ Duke
Oct. 9:Notre Dame @ Virginia Tech
Oct. 30:N. Carolina @ Notre Dame
Nov. 13:Notre Dame @ Virginia
Nov. 20:Georgia Tech @ Notre Dame
Nov. 27:Clemson @ S. Carolina
Kentucky @ Louisville
Florida State @ Florida
Georgia @ Georgia Tech

Rx: What can the ACC do to save face in 2021?

This weekend is more important than you might think - especially the Missouri/BC game. Boston College is one of two unbeaten ACC teams, but the Eagles haven't been ranked yet - probably owing to the fact that they haven't beaten any P5 opponents yet. That could change this Saturday when an SEC newbie comes to Chestnut Hill... Missouri may not be one of top teams in the SEC, but they do come with a winning record overall (2-1, the loss being at Kentucky). A Boston College win would definitely help the image of the conference.
Meanwhile, Duke hosts Kansas this weekend in a came that won't really help if the Blue Devils win - but it will surely hurt the reputation of the entire conference if they lose. Please, Duke, just take care of your business!
After this weekend we get the next of 4 more games against Notre Dame (Florida State having lost a close one in the opening weekend). Virginia Tech is good enough to beat the Irish - and the game is in Blacksburg - but I have to wonder if the coaching staff will make the right decisions in a close game... Three weeks later, the Tar Heels take their rejuvenated offense to South Bend for their upset bid. While I definitely give UNC a chance to get the job done, I also remember an old basketball adage: defense travels (not necessarily offense).
Two weeks after the UNC game, Notre Dame visits Virginia. The Cavaliers are pretty good - and well coached - and it's a home game for UVa, but if they have a hope of winning it lies in the possibility that the Irish may underestimate them. The final ACC vs. Notre Dame game is the following week, when Georgia Tech visits South Bend. The Irish are clearly more talented than the Yellow Jackets, so again, if there's to be an upset, GT needs to catch Notre Dame looking ahead to Stanford (yeah, not likely).
That leaves Rivalry Week, with the usual foursome of ACC/SEC games. Clemson will be favored at South Carolina (although the way the Tigers' offense has played so far, even that game is not a "gimme"). The other three ACC teams will probably all be underdogs, though I'd give Louisville a decent chance to upset Kentucky at home. Georgia Tech is also at home (but Georgia is looking like one of the two best teams in the whole country). Florida State has to go to "The Swamp".

Prognosis:

How many P5 OOC games do we think the ACC can reasonably win? I'd like to think BC and Duke get a sweep this weekend and at least one of VT/UNC/UVa can pull the upset over Notre Dame. Then, if Clemson and Louisville can get wins over their SEC rivals, we'd be looking at 5 more P5 wins, and a final regular season record of 8-12. That's still a losing record, but (a) it would be respectable, and (b) it would put the league in a position to get back to .500 or better with a good bowl record. At this point, that's probably the best the ACC can hope for this season...

35 food trucks will offer samples and full menus at the Food Truck Battle Sept. 25 at the NYS Fairgrounds. Jacob Pucci

'Biggest gathering of food trucks in CNY history' rolls into NYS Fairgrounds this weekend (PS; Cazentre)

It’s billed as a Syracuse vs. Rochester showdown, but it’s really all about showcasing the best of the food trucks from the Finger Lakes to the Mohawk Valley.

The Food Truck Battle is 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 25) at and around Chevy Court on the New York State Fairgrounds. It features 35 trucks, from places like Ithaca and Utica as well as Syracuse and Rochester and all points in between. (See full list below)

It will be the “largest single day gathering of food trucks in CNY history,” according to organizer Nick Sanford, who is also owner of Toss & Fire Pizza and president of the Syracuse Food Truck Association, the event’s sponsor.

“It’s been a tough time for a lot of our food trucks with Covid and then supply and staffing issues,” Sanford said. “So originally it was a battle between Syracuse and Rochester, but now we’ll just highlight everyone.”

There will be a competition, though, with a panel of judges making their picks of the top offerings and a People’s Choice prize.

Trucks will offer low-cost samples ($3 to $5 each) plus full menus for purchase.

“This is a good opportunity for people to check out different trucks and get samples from each,” Sanford said. “You’ll probably see trucks you haven’t seen before.”

There are also craft beer vendors, 60-plus craft merchandise vendors in the nearby Science & Industry Building, and a kids’ zone with face painting, caricatures, balloon twisting and a bounce house.

And there’s a full lineup of live music. At the Chevy Court stage: Evan & Caitlin (11 to 11:45 a.m.); Just Joe (noon to 1 p.m.); Jess Novak (1:45 to 2:45 p.m.) Mike Powell & Wade (3:30 to 5:15 p.m.); and Sophistafunk (6 to 8 p.m.). Ryan Mackie is in the Crafters Village (Science & Industry) all day.

Wandering entertainment provided by the Unity Street Band, Jeff the Magic Man, Scooch from the Syracuse Mets and Coco’s Big Shoe Clowns.

Admission tickets are $5 and a portion goes to three local charities: (Food Bank of Central New York, Helping Hounds Dog Rescue and Clear Path for Veterans).

Buy tickets in advance. Tickets are cash only at the gate. There are ATMs on site. All trucks take cash or credit for food.

Masks are required for everyone when indoors (in restrooms and the Science & Industry Building) and otherwise all state and county rules are in effect

In "Opportunities to Save Face" I was focused on P5 games only. I agree that Liberty is a tough opponent, but even if Syracuse wins (and I hope they do!), it won't count as P5.
