Welcome to World Sea Turtle Day!

World Sea Turtle Day honors and highlights the importance of sea turtles and recognizes sea turtle conservation and protection efforts around the world. It is held on the birthdate of noted sea turtle biologist Archie Carr, who founded the Sea Turtle Conservancy and helped create the community that works to protect sea turtles today.

Only a fraction of the sea turtles that once populated the Earth remain on it today. Sea turtles have been killed for their meat, eggs, skin, and shells. Their feeding and nesting habitats face destruction, and they are under threat from pollution. In particular, they are threatened by plastic dumped into the oceans.

Class of 2024 offensive tackle Terez Davis visits Penn State for the Maryland game on Nov. 12. Davis is making an official visit to Syracuse June 16-18. Joe Hermitt | jhermitt@pennlive.com

Syracuse football 2024 recruiting: Who's visiting this weekend? (PS; $; Leiker)

Syracuse football has doubled its 2024 class size in the past two weeks, adding four new commitments during a busy June of official visits.

At least two more prospects visit this weekend before the Orange hosts another weekend of camps (7-on-7 Passing Camp and Big Man Camp) on June 24.

Noah Rosahac, who already committed to SU in early April, Terez Davis and Jayden Brown have all shared via Twitter they’ll be in the Salt City for official visits. They will likely be joined by at least a few more players who have not made public announcements.

Rosahac (6-foot-5, 270 pounds) is a three-star interior offensive lineman from Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. He’s the No. 32 player in the state and No. 78 nationally at his position. He also plays defensive tackle and was a first-team all-state selection in 2022.

Besides Syracuse, Rosahac had a total of nine other scholarship offers, including Virginia Tech and Temple.

Davis, a 6-foot-6, 260-pound offensive tackle, verbally committed to Maryland on June 9 but confirmed three days later he was still making an official visit to Syracuse.

Matching up: Tigers have the edge over Orange without Tucker (theclemsonsinsider.com; Burnett)

Clemson and Syracuse meet for the final September duel in the Carrier Dome. The Orange are coming off one of their best seasons in recent memory but have to field the loss of their most prolific playmaker.

On the other side, the Tigers are building off the talent from last season and chemistry with a young quarterback that took over the starting spot late in 2022.

Quarterback

Advantage: Syracuse, barely.

The Tigers will have high expectations for Cade Klubnik after showing promise at the end of 2022. Considering his talent as a five-star recruit and what he’s shown on the field, the sky is the limit for the youngster but he still has to show it.

Syracuse returns starter Garrett Shrader, who burst onto the scene during a resurgence year for the Orange. Accounting for 26 touchdowns and throwing just seven interceptions, his mix of accuracy and mobility presents problems for opposing defenses.

Running back

Advantage: Clemson

If Sean Tucker was still in college, this would go to the Orange, but he isn’t and the Tigers have the edge here. LeQuint Allen will likely take over as starter but he had just 41 carries in 2022.

Clemson has Will Shipley back for another season. The standout sophomore season he had included 15 rushing touchdowns, a number he will be poised to top in 2023.

Wide receiver

Advantage: Syracuse

Both teams return their top receiver. For Clemson, it’s Antonio Williams who had 604 yards last season. For the Orange, it’s Oronde Gadsden II and the 6-foot-5 receiver made 61 catches for 969 yards in 2022. The junior deep threat is an issue for all secondaries, especially undersized ones.

The Tigers also lost Joseph Ngata, their second-leading receiver. Syracuse barely takes this one.

Tight end

Advantage: Clemson

There is a lot of excitement around Jake Briningstool taking over the starting spot for Clemson. He had 285 yards in 2022 and shined in his moments. Syracuse barely uses their tight ends in the passing game, with their leading receiver at the position last season gaining just 31 yards. This one goes to the Tigers by default.

Offensive line

Syracuse football predicted to finish 10th in ACC by Phil Steele (TNIAAM; Ostrowski & Wall)

College football analyst Phil Steele’s annual preseason rankings were recently released, and he gave some mixed messages about the 2023 Syracuse Orange.

In the first year of the ACC’s new schedule model, Steele predicts that the Orange will finish 10th in the conference, tied with Boston College and Virginia Tech. The veteran prognosticator has Clemson winning the ACC while he expects Virginia and Georgia Tech to finish at the bottom. It should be noted that offensive line experience is a big part of Steele’s model, so it shouldn’t surprise fans to see Syracuse where he has them.

Steele does feel that Syracuse will start 4-0 and make a bowl game for the second consecutive season- something the Orange haven’t done since 2012-13. He projects that Dino Babers’ squad will face the 63rd-toughest schedule in the country, which is a bit easier than 2022’s (and 2024’s projects to be a much easier OOC slate).

The rankings also include a breakdown of position groups. To no one’s surprise, the Orange linebackers rank the highest among ACC schools as Steele has them 5th in the conference and 30th nationally. After that, he feels the quarterback group (“The Ex-SEC’s”) are 6th best in the conference and 26th nationally.

Chestnut and Carter Make All-Transfer Team (orangefizz.net; Simone)

They say the transfer portal giveth, and it taketh away. For Syracuse, the latter part was certainly true this offseason.

The trend of players making a name for themselves early in their careers at smaller programs and graduating to high end schools caught up with the Orange this winter when Duce Chestnut heading to LSU and Ja’Had Carter departing for Ohio State.

Earlier this week, On3 released an “all transfer team,” which highlighted the best transfers at every position this offseason, SU fans won’t be surprised to know that both Chestnut and Carter were on it.

With Garrett Williams heading to the NFL, that duo was set to anchor a secondary that has become a backbone for the Syracuse program. Andre Cisco, Ife Melifonwu, Trill Williams and now Garrett Williams have all entered the NFL in the last three seasons.

Syracuse Orange: Six names worthy of the SU Athletics Ring of Honor (itlh; Fiello)

Syracuse University recently announced two new names for the Syracuse Orange Ring of Honor in the JMA Wireless Dome.

According to a press release from the Syracuse Athletics Department, SU basketball legend and former NBA great Dave Bing and former Syracuse football head coach Ben Schwartzwalder will both be honored during the 2023-2024 athletics calendar.

For those wondering, this is a different honor than the jersey retirement/placed in the rafters. Established in 2020, only 6 other Syracuse Orange names have this honor (Jim Boeheim, Pearl Washington, Roy Simmons Jr., Jim Brown, Floyd Little and Ernie Davis).

I have absolutely zero issues with these being the first 8 due to their impact on the history of SU Athletics. But I also have a list of 6 people whom I think their impact led to such a legacy that they should also be added. This list is in no particular order but simply 6 names I think worthy of the honor.

Dick MacPherson

The first three names on this list are football legendary names who definitely influenced my fandom so maybe I’m biased but I still believe them worthy. And I’ll start with former Syracuse Orange football coach Dick MacPherson.

I love Coach Mac. The legendary number 44 and the 1987 football season are two huge reasons I’m the fan I am today. And since that was one of his 10 seasons as head coach and they went undefeated that season, I think that alone deserves special recognition.

In Jim Brown’s last game, the score was Brown 43, Syracuse 18, Colgate 7 (Your Letters) (PS)

To the Editor:

Jim Brown’s death brought back vivid memories of his last game at Archbold Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 17, 1956.

I had a standing-room ticket and watched the game, with a good pair of binoculars, from the top of the stands at the west end of the stadium, astride the north sideline. In the first half, Colgate defended the goal right below me.

Brown promptly scored his first 14 points. Lining up to take the ensuing kickoffs, the Red Raiders (as they were known then) displayed purpose and proud athletic resolve and, soon enough, got back into the game.

At that point, the scoreboard at the far end of the field read Syracuse 14, Colgate 7, and showed that one minute — exactly 60 seconds — remained in the first quarter.

Lining up to kick off, the Raiders again showed purpose and resolve, confident they could make the game competitive. Their confidence lasted exactly 10 seconds.

Taking the kickoff, Brown headed for his right sideline, racing straight toward me., scoring his third touchdown. The clock showed 50 seconds remained in the first quarter.

A decidedly different, deeply dispirited Raider team assembled for the kickoff. The game, as a contest, ended with 45 minutes, 50 seconds remaining on the clock.

Papers reported and record books give the final score as Syracuse 61, Colgate 7. Odd though this may look, the game I saw ended Brown 43, Syracuse 18, Colgate 7.

Get to Know Your Orange Man: #72 OL Mark Petry (TNIAAM; Wall)

It’s time to start preparing for the upcoming Syracuse Orange football season. We’re going through the roster to take a look at each Syracuse player as we get ready for a critical season for the Orange.

Up next for offensive lineman week is...

Name: Mark Petry

Position: Offensive tackle

Year: Redshirt Junior

Height: 6’4”

Weight: 281

Hometown: Hochheim am Main, Germany

High School: Graf-Stauffenberg-Gymnasium

Prior School: Ellsworth Community College

2022 Stats: Played in three games last season. After seeing mop-up duty against UConn and Wagner, Petry stepped in to replace Enrique Cruz after his ejection at Boston College.

2023 Projections: Petry has bulked up from last year’s weight of 269 and he’ll likely enter camp as a back-up at the tackle spots. He’ll be counted on for the PAT/FG blocking units, and based on what we’ve seen with the Orange’s injury “luck”, we expect him to see time next fall.

How’d He Get Here?: Came to Syracuse after one season at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa. Chose the Orange after committing to Eastern Michigan.

ACC News

Bankruptcy-saddled Bally Sports no longer wants to televise its package of ACC football and men’s basketball games, leaving Raycom open to find a new outlet for games starting in September.

Diamond Sports Group, the parent company of the regional Bally Sports networks around the country, missed a payment to Raycom this spring, according to a motion filed in federal bankruptcy court on Wednesday and obtained by The News & Observer.

Stuck with $8 billion in debt, Diamond filed for bankruptcy protection on March 14.

In Wednesday’s motion, Diamond’s lawyers requested the court end the deal with Raycom, the Charlotte-based television production company that holds the rights to select ACC football and men’s and women’s regular-season basketball telecasts. That deal, the final remnant of the ACC’s once-robust partnership with Raycom, is scheduled to run through April 30, 2027.

“(Diamond) and Raycom have discussed their current arrangement and have determined to amicably part ways and allow Raycom to freely pursue a new partnership,” the motion states.

After Diamond missed the payment, Raycom requested Diamond file the motion with the court, according to the court document.

“Raycom Sports supports Diamond’s determination to end the uncertainty over the status of the rights agreement for the benefit of ACC fans,” Raycom Sports said in a statement released to The News & Observer.

The move will allow Raycom to find a different channel to show the games, which include one football game per week and two men’s basketball games per week.

ESPN agreement with ACC

The rights to televise all other ACC games are owned by ESPN through its comprehensive media deal with the league. One possibility, of course, would be for Raycom to sell its games to ESPN and have them on one of its networks, which includes the ACC Network. Since the bankruptcy court judge has yet to rule, Raycom is not yet free to complete a deal with a new provider. But a ruling to end the agreement is likely since, according to the court document, lawyers from Raycom and Diamond worked together to draft the motion to end their deal. On May 31, the ACC announced television plans for the upcoming football season’s first three weeks. The majority of those games will be on an ESPN channel, such as ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ACC Network or streaming via ACC Network Extra/ESPN+.

Diamond Sports drops Raycom-produced ACC games from Bally Sports RSNs (awfulannouncing.com; Lucia)

A variety of ACC basketball and football games will have new homes in each sport’s upcoming season.

Per NextTV, the package of Raycom-produced ACC basketball and football basketball games will no longer be on the Diamond Sports-owned Bally Sports RSNs. Raycom indicated its desire to move on from the Bally RSNs prior to Diamond’s bankruptcy filing in March, and the company was amenable and ceased paying Raycom.

A motion was filed on Wednesday to reject the contract with Raycom for the ACC games.

On Wednesday, Diamond’s lawyers filed a motion signaling an official rejection of the ACC contract.
Unlike the awkwardly hostile language between Major League Baseball and Sinclair/Diamond, the separation with Raycom sounds amicable.
“Recently, Raycom requested that the Debtors promptly reject the Raycom Agreement so that Raycom could initiate the process of seeking a new partner for broadcasting future ACC events,” reads the court motion. “The parties’ respective counsel have worked closely with one another in preparing this motion, and Raycom supports the relief requested in this motion.”

Raycom Media, the parent company of Raycom Sports, was purchased by Gray Television several years ago.
The package of Raycom-produced games on the Bally Sports RSNs began to dwindle last summer, when several early round women’s basketball and baseball tournament games were shifted to ACC Network.

As for possible homes for this package, which include a dozen or so football games, two dozen women’s basketball games, and over 40 men’s basketball games, looping it back into the ESPN umbrella as an ESPN+ exclusive makes sense. Because of Gray’s ownership of Raycom, I can’t see the package being sold to one of Gray’s rivals like Nexstar or Scripps for use on The CW or ION. Gray could also hold on to the package to air on the stations it owns, but they could run into conflicts with national programming on affiliates.

Bally Sports Networks Lose ACC Football and Basketball (barrettsportsmedia.com; Bondurant)

While a lot of the focus with the Diamond Sports Group bankruptcy has surrounded deals Bally Sports had with professional teams, a contract the network had to air ACC football and basketball games has been rejected.

Yahoo reported Thursday that Diamond Sports Group and Gray Television’s sports production unit Raycom had reached a deal to end their carriage of select ACC football and men’s and women’s basketball games even prior to the Chapter 11 filing in March.

Bally Sports aired 43 men’s basketball and 25 women’s basketball games during the 2022-23 season.

The decision to part ways now allows the conference to seek out a new partner to carry games in those sports that wouldn’t otherwise get coverage by ESPN.

ACC football: Projecting the league's five-best candidates for Offensive, Defensive Player of the Year (247sports.com; Hughes)

North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye ran away with ACC Offensive and Player of the Year honors last season but faces stiff competition in his pursuit of repeating as the league’s MVP in 2023. The conference has no shortage of talented quarterbacks, and Florida State’s Jordan Travis and Clemson’s Cade Klubnik have plenty of opportunities to impress voters during their respective quests for the College Football Playoff.

Pitt’s Calijah Kancey took home Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 and left for the NFL this offseason. Runner-ups Yasir Abdullah (Louisville) and Drake Thomas (NC State) also turned professional, creating a wide-open race for DPOY in 2023.

The conference returned four players who received at least one DPOY vote in 2022, including Florida State EDGE Jared Verse, who led the conference in sacks (9.0) and finished second in tackles for loss (17.0) in his first season in Tallahassee. UNC linebacker Cedric Gray led the Power Five in tackles last season (145), while Miami safety Kamren Kinchens tied for the national lead with six interceptions. They both should figure heavily into the race next season.

Here are the ACC’s five best candidates for offensive and defensive player of the year next season:

OFFENSE: WILL SHIPLEY, RB, CLEMSON

Shipley was the first player in ACC history to earn first-team all-conference honors at three different positions in 2022, collecting first-team honors in the running back, all-purpose and specialist categories. He rushed 210 times for 1,182 yards and 15 touchdowns and caught 38 passes for 242 yards. He was the only player in the nation to record at least 1,150 rushing yards, 200 receiving yards and 300 kickoff return yards.
Shipley could be poised for an even bigger year in Riley's updated offense.
"I am going to be used in different ways," Shipley said of Riley's offense in the spring. "I can add a whole new dimension to this offense, and I'm excited about it. We've already seen me become more of a receiver thus far in spring."

JORDAN TRAVIS, QB, FLORIDA STATE

Travis was one of college football season's biggest surprises in 2022. He entered the year with a tenuous grasp on the Seminoles' starting job and ended the season as one of the nation's best signal-callers. In his first year as the full-time starter, Travis threw for 3,314 yards and 24 touchdowns against five interceptions. He added 417 yards and seven scores on the ground while leading the Seminoles to a 10-3 finish, the program's first winning record since 2017.
Travis has no shortage of weapons in 2023. The Seminoles boast arguably the ACC's top duo of wide receivers in Johnny Wilson and Keon Coleman. Transfer tight ends Jaheim Bell and Kyle Morlock were two huge additions in their own right, while we hear freshman wideout Vandrevius Jacobs impressed during spring ball.

CADE KLUBNIK, QB, CLEMSON

2022 P5 Revenue (USA Today) (RX; HM)

2022 P5 Revenue (USA Today)

USAToday, which has been doing financial analysis of college sports conferences for many years, posted SEC, Big Ten each top $2 billion in athletic department revenue, outpacing Power Five foes in which they report 2022 revenues. Here are some of the key points:

Using median values for their schools’ revenues, rather than the averages, the conferences ranked in the following order:
SEC: $159.1 million.
Big Ten: $150.1 million.
ACC: $134.4 million.
Pac-12: $117 million.
Big 12: $110.7 million.

Quick observations:
  • This is median revenue, or the amount that the school made in the middle of the range.
  • The median ACC school trailed the media SEC school by $25 million, but was only $16 million behind the Big Ten median. The ACC was a whopping $17 million ahead of the Pac-12 median and $24 million ahead of the Big XII median (remember, Texas and Oklahoma affect the average but not the median).
However, these numbers are incomplete; they don't include things like student fees and some other sources. So USA Today posted another set of numbers, this time included all revenue streams:

...Going based on revenue actually generated by athletics departments, which includes conference and NCAA revenue shares, the medians change — and the gaps grow:
SEC: $159 million, with a range of $203 million for Alabama, to $110.7 million for Mississippi State.
Big Ten: $147.1 million, with a range of $251.6 million for Ohio State, to $85.6 million for Rutgers.
ACC: $125.2 million, with a range of $151.9 million for Clemson, to $94.8 million for Georgia Tech.
Big 12: $106.9 million, with a range of $239.3 million for Texas, to $91.4 million for Oklahoma State.

Getting to P3 (RX; HM)

Getting to P3

A while ago we looked at a possible realignment endgame:
Since then, JRSEC, a moderator on CSNBBS, suggests how it could happen:

...I can envision all presidents and the commissioner with an ESPN rep who would say 5 schools have expressed a desire to join another conference within the ESPN family of rights and if you decide to let them we will backfill with schools of your choice, reevaluate your existing contract and are prepared to give you a raise, or place you all in a conference together where you will merit a raise and no one will suffer lack of access to the post season. If you vote no things will remain as they are.

This way the decision is a consensus decision by all parties and the schools involved may not even be disclosed... If no remaining school suffers an economic loss, or loss of access granted normally then no damages have occurred. And if all agree to act for more money any movement approved by the rights holder may transpire and courts are not involved... everyone gains something... only ESPN can handle this.
What JR describes here could certainly work, but it involves paying ALL 15 ACC SCHOOLS MORE MONEY. What will NEVER work is the idea of a few schools leaving the others behind early.

__________

How might that work?

With the addition of BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF to the Big XII, that brings the number of schools currently in the "power" club up to 69. For the sake of argument, let's say a true breakaway requires the top 72 teams - so three more are ultimately "called up" (possibly USF, San Diego State, Temple and/or UConn?). The number of teams in each conference would then depend on the number of conferences when the dust settles.
  • 72/4 = 18 teams each in a P4
  • 72/3 = 24 teams each in a P3
  • 72/2 = 36 teams each in a P2
Now, I may not know everything, but I just don't see any way that P2 scenario happens. For that matter, even if only 60 teams make it to the P2 (thus leaving behind 5 schools to form a class-action law suit), that's still 30 teams each, which is way too many!

Canada wildfire smoke is drifting into Upstate NY again (PS; Coin)

Wildfires continue to burn in Canada, and a shift in the wind direction is bringing some of it back to Upstate New York skies.

“As we get into Friday and over the weekend, there will be a north to northwest flow, and that could bring down some smoke and haze,” said Accuweather meteorologist John Gresiak.

It’s unlikely we’ll see the unprecedented poor air quality of last week, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. NOAA’s 24-hour forecast shows some smoke in the skies above Upstate starting this morning, but with little of it reaching the ground.

Today’s air quality is expected to be moderate, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation. The measurement of tiny particles in the air from smoke will be 55 micrograms per cubic meter. At its worst on June 7, that number was above 400, the highest ever recorded in Central New York.
