Welcome to National Kitten Day!

National Kitten Day celebrates kittens and highlights the plight of those that are homeless in an effort to save as many as possible through adoption. It was created in 2012 by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige as an adjunct holiday to National Cat Day, and it was first held the following year. For its first two years, it was celebrated in December, but it was then moved to July. For a few years in the mid-2010s, it was sponsored by BLUE Naturally Fresh Cat Litter, which appears to have been a collaboration between The Blue Buffalo Company and Naturally Fresh cat litter.

https://www.si.com/college/syracuse...3-training-camp-position-preview-running-back (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football is expected to kick off training camp in the next month or so with the season less than two months away. All Syracuse continues its series previewing each position headed into training camp with the running back position.

PREVIOUS POSITION PREVIEWS

Quarterback

WHAT WE KNOW

LeQuint Allen's status is a giant question mark. As of a couple of weeks ago, this preview would have been pretty straightforward. However, the revelation that Allen was suspended by an unfair student-led process had changed that perspective. Allen is currently suspended for the season due to a fight in which he alleges he was punched twice first before landing one himself in self defense. The punishment after the school's process was a two semester suspension, which means he would not be able to play during the 2023 campaign. Allen showed significant flashes during the Pinstripe Bowl last year and was poised for a breakout season as a key offensive weapon for Syracuse. Whether that remains the case is currently known. There is a court date later this month as Allen has sued Syracuse University in an attempt to get reinstated.

WHAT WE DON'T

Who can step up if Allen cannot go? The good news is there are options even if each has its own set of questions. Juwaun Price returns after spending last season as the third running back behind Sean Tucker and Allen. He has a lot of experience from his time at New Mexico State, where he averaged 5.1 yards per carry with 10 touchdowns during his redshirt freshman season. A year in the program with playing experience is a solid combination, but he has not been the primary back at the power five level. Incoming freshmen Muwaffaq Parkman and Ike Daniels provide a lot of upside but are unknown. Productive junior college running back Deston Hawkins is another option, but has not played at this level, so how that translates remains unknown.

Syracuse football is expected to kick off training camp in the next month or so with the season less than two months away. All Syracuse starts its series previewing each position headed into training camp.

WHAT WE KNOW

Garrett Shrader is the starter. There is no question who will be leading the Orange out of the tunnel in week one and running the offense from the jump. Shrader has been the starter the last two years and got significantly better from year one to year two. Entering year three with Syracuse, another such jump would make him one of the best signal callers in the country. Shrader has always been dynamic with his legs but he took strides as a passer last season, showing improved accuracy in the intermediate and deep passing games. There is still room for more improvement in each area, however, which is what Syracuse is looking for this year. In addition, with the loss of key players from last year's squad on both sides of the ball, look for Shrader to take on even more of a leadership role this year.

WHAT WE DON'T

Who is Shrader's backup? In the spring, there was a strong competition between Carlos Del Rio-Wilson and Justin Lamson. Lamson has since transferred, leaving Del Rio-Wilson as the favorite to be Shrader's understudy. That said, Syracuse did bring in another former four star recruit who transferred in from an SEC program. The same situation as Shrader and Del Rio-Wilson. That would be former South Carolina quarterback Braden Davis. Davis is very talented, has a big frame at 6-5, 205 pounds, and has a strong arm. He is talented enough to push Del Rio-Wilson for the backup spot. Del Rio-Wilson is the favorite as he has been with the program for a full year and started a game, but this will be an open competition.

Boiler Alert Talks Ethan Morton and Syracuse (hammerandnails.com; jumbo and Purb)

Ryan and I are back at you as we continue our review through the 2023-2024 men’s basketball roster and discuss what each player needs to work on throughout the offseason in order for Purdue to continue to improve. Today we are looking at Ethan Morton. He’s one of my favorite players but I’m smart enough to know that he has some flaws and maybe that Matt Painter has exacerbated those flaws. Ryan agrees with me and we talk about what can be done. A lot of people forget that Morton scored over 2,000 points in high school. He’s got offensive talent that he hasn’t showcased at Purdue.

Next, we discuss the revenge game against Syracuse. Purdue played in a wild game against the Orange last year when they lost in the final seconds of the game after committing boneheaded penalty after bonehead penalty. Purdue snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in that one. Let’s hope they get some taste of revenge in Ross-Ade this year. Ryan let’s us know who is returning on offense and defense.

ACC News

How Will ACC Football Compare to the Rest? (orangefizz.net; Griffin)

2023 will in all likelihood be the final season with the collegiate football landscape as we currently know it. With UCLA, USC, Texas, and Oklahoma set to make the sport’s most potent conferences- the SEC and Big Ten- even more powerful come next season, it’s never been more important that the ACC produces a strong campaign from top-to-bottom. With Clemson not being its usual self the past few seasons, the ACC hasn’t sent a team to the College Football Playoff in three years. Odds are Syracuse will not be the one to solve that problem, but could a different conference foe get back to the sport’s holy grail?

SEC

There’s simply no introduction needed for far and away the best conference in college football. Georgia has won consecutive national titles, Alabama is Alabama, and up and down the conference schools like LSU, Tennessee, and Ole Miss have serious potential to make some noise. You can’t evaluate how the ACC compares to the SEC because it simply does not. It really does mean more down south.

BIG TEN

Another conference that needs no introduction thanks to the two powers that are Ohio State and Michigan. The Buckeyes came significantly closer to beating Georgia than anyone else a season ago, and the Wolverines have revamped their dominance in recent years. They alone make the Big Ten a force to be reckoned with, add in high-potential squads like Penn State and Wisconsin it becomes even more of one. There’s a reason UCLA and USC want in.

PAC-12

Speaking of the Bruins and Trojans, the PAC-12 has had a difficult time getting teams to the playoff lately. No school from out west has gotten there since Washington did it in 2016. If any school were to snap that skid this year, it would likely be USC, who sits at No. 7 in ESPN’s preseason poll. Elsewhere, barring a major overperformance from Oregon or Utah, it’s not exactly a threatening conference. At a bare minimum, it’s one the ACC ought to outperform.

BIG 12

Even with the Longhorns and Sooners, the Big 12 has always felt like a conference of mystery. Nobody expected TCU to make it to the national championship last season. That being said, expect both Texas and Oklahoma to bounce back from down years in their final season in the conference. But besides that, the Horned Frogs are probably not going to run the table again, making the Big 12 not a particularly scary group this year.

ACC

This year’s ACC is going to look a lot different because of the new scheduling format, but either way here’s how it sits right now. It’s Clemson & Florida State on top and then everybody else. So yes, there is theoretically an opening for SU to make some noise but it won’t come easy. North Carolina with Drake Maye is going to be tough, and schools like Pitt, Miami, and Louisville are never easy to usurp. The ceiling is very high for many schools in the ACC, Syracuse included, but the floor is also very low.

National CFB writer names Clemson most important Miami football game (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

Clemson is The most important conference game for every ACC program in 2023″ for the Miami football team per Jesse Simonton of On3. Miami has lost the last three games versus Clemson by significant margins. Playing well versus Clemson has been the measuring stick in the ACC for nearly 10 years.

Miami has an opportunity to bank wins before hosting Clemson on October 21. Expect Miami to be an underdog versus only Texas A&M and North Carolina prior to hosting Clemson. FanDuel lists the Miami football program as a 17.0 favorite in the season opener versus Miami (Ohio) and a 7.5 underdog versus Texas A&M.

Clemson is likely to be favored in its six games prior to playing at Miami. After playing Miami (Ohio) and Texas A&M, Miami hosts Bethune-Cookman in week three, plays at Temple and following a bye hosts Georgia Tech. Those are all games Miami can win. The Miami football schedule is primarily back-loaded.

Clemson begins the second half of the 2023 season for Miami. Miami hosts Virginia a week after Clemson. Virginia is followed by games at North Carolina State and Florida State, versus Louisville and at Boston College on the day after Thanksgiving to finish the regular season. Miami needs to get off to a good start in 2023.

Welcome to the 11,000th article posted on ACCFootballRx!

From CBS Sports "Ranking college football's reigning conference champions by most likely to repeat in 2023 season", they put Georgia as #1 to rule over the SEC, followed by...

#2 Clemson
The Tigers have been the safest bet in college football over the past decade with seven conference titles over the past eight seasons. Clemson is in a solid position to win another in 2023, especially with the ACC eliminating divisions. The only complication comes from competition. Florida State projects as a preseason top-10 opponent, and the Tigers could see. the Seminoles twice next year. But if first-year offensive coordinator Garrett Riley is able to revamp the offense, Clemson could be back in national contention and atop the ACC once more.

I could definitely see the Tigers repeating, although another ACC championship for the Seminoles wouldn't surprise me, either.
__________
Part of the reason for optimism in Tigertown is recruiting... from Fansided's "5 biggest winners from college football recruiting in June"...

1. Clemson football
College football fans and pundits have been trying to kick dirt on the grave of the Clemson football team for the past two seasons.
But the Tigers are alive and well. As much as people want to forget it, they are the defending ACC champions. Clemson football also landed two five-star commitments in the 2024 college football recruiting class in June, which is why the Tigers are our biggest winner for the month.

From Matt Brown's Extra Points: Reclassifying to FBS may become more expensive soon.

...the NCAA released proposed legislation from the Division I Council that would alter the current entrance requirements to reclassify from FCS to FBS.
The proposal that grabbed the most immediate headlines was a change in entrance fees. Currently, it costs $5,000 to transition from FCS to FBS. The proposed legislation bumps that number up to $5 million, all due at once.
...the goal, I was told, was to tie this entrance fee to roughly two NCAA Units.
...ADs and other insiders told me that actually, it’s the other stuff in this proposal that matters more

Per the release:

If adopted, all FBS schools would be required to provide 90% of the total number of allowable scholarships over a two-year rolling period across at least 16 sports, including football. Schools also would be required to offer at least 210 scholarships each year, amounting to no less than $6 million in athletics scholarships offered.
Outside of FBS, most schools do not fully fund the maximum allowable scholarships for every single “Equivalency" sport, like swimming, soccer or softball... I suspect at least a few current FBS programs are also not in compliance with the scholarship rules. Under the proposal, schools will have until 2027 to be in compliance... this proposal also calls for the immediate removal of attendance-related requirements that nobody follows...

Clemson Football: Oppo Research – Duke Blue Devils (rubbingtherock.com; Chancey)

For the fourth time in five seasons, Clemson Football will open its season against an ACC foe. While fans might think they are familiar with the Duke Blue Devils, they probably shouldn’t jump to conclusions.

The Tigers will visit Wallace Wade Stadium on Labor Day Monday, September 4th at 8:00 PM. The game will be carried nationally by ESPN.

Clemson leads the overall series 37-16-1. The Tigers are playing the Blue Devils for the first time since 2018. This will be the first time Clemson played in Durham since 2012.

Traditionally, football fans consider Duke’s football program to be a lower-tier ACC program, but that opinion is not reflective of the competitiveness of the Devil program in 2022 in their first season under head coach Mike Elko.

Duke finished 9-4 overall and 5-3 in the ACC in Elko’s first campaign. They finished tied for second in the Coastal Division. In their three conference losses, they lost at Georgia Tech by three points in overtime, against North Carolina by three points, and at Pitt by two points.

Clemson Football will face an experienced Duke squad on Labor Day

The Blue Devils return much of their production on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Riley Leonard had a breakout season in 2022 with 2,967 yards and 20 touchdowns, against only six interceptions. Leonard is a rising junior who could play himself into NFL Draft consideration with a good season.

FSU football: Will Shyheim Brown be a breakout star in 2023? (chopchat.com; Devers)

FSU football fans can still hear the “Block in the Bayou” in the Caesars Superdome to this day as redshirt freshman defensive back Shyheim Brown blocked Damian Ramos’ extra point attempt to give the Seminoles a 24-23 victory over the LSU Tigers.

That play showcased his resiliency and patience as he blossomed whenever his number was called.

Brown elevated his play during the season, where he recorded 36 total tackles and 1.5 sacks even as the back up behind do-it-all defender Jammie Robinson.

The Lake City native started to find a rhythm near the end of the season, where he recorded 12 total tackles and 0.5 sacks against Florida and Oklahoma.

He is no longer behind Jammie Robinson, with the All-ACC safety getting selected in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers.

However, Brown now has a whole set of expectations to accomplish as he is presumed to be the starting safety alongside redshirt senior Akeem Dent.

FSU fans have discussed about the lack of depth at the safety position, given that younger defensive backs such as Conrad Hussey and KJ Kirkland will likely have to contribute in some capacity this upcoming season.

88 apartments proposed for first new building in Syracuse’s Armory Square in a decade (PS; $; Moriarty)

Developers are proposing to build 88 market-rate apartments in an $18 million project that would be the first new building in Armory Square in 10 years.

Partnership Properties, JF Real Estate and the real estate finance firm Larew, Doyle & Associates are proposing to demolish a 280-car parking garage at 401 S. Clinton St. and build a six-story building in its place.

It would be the first new building in Armory Square since the 180-room Courtyard Syracuse Downtown at Armory Square opened in 2013.

The new building would have 3,000 square feet of ground level commercial space. The top five floors would contain 88 one- and two-bedroom and efficiency apartments. The building’s basement would serve as a parking garage with room for 90 vehicles.

John Funiciello, president of JF Real Estate, said all the apartments would be market-rate. Rents would be set when construction is completed, he said.

Funiciello, who bought the garage in 2006, said housing is a better use of the site because of the continuing strong demand for apartments downtown and in nearby Armory Square.
