Created by Benihana, "the nation's leading operator of Japanese-inspired Teppanyaki and Sushi Restaurants," whose signature dish is fried rice, National Fried Rice Day is observed today. In 2018, in honor of the first observance, two Benihana chefs—Andrey Shek of the 56th Street location in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, and Raymundo Mendez of the Hancock Tower location on Michigan Avenue in Chicago—grilled the restaurant's fried rice for 42 hours and 17 minutes straight, breaking the Guinness World Record for Longest cooking marathon. As part of the event, Benihana partnered with Feeding America and donated the fried rice to City Harvest, New York City's largest food rescue organization, and to Cornerstone Community Outreach, a Chicago organization which serves about 500 people a day. More than 550 servings of fried rice were donated to each location.

Purdue passed more than expected, so Rocky Long made a new play in 2 minutes (DO; Alandt)
Heading into Week 3, Syracuse prepared to face a balanced Purdue team. Hudson Card hadn’t thrown an interception while throwing for over 500 passing yards through two games and running back Devin Mockobee had 155 yards and two touchdowns. But, after the first half, defensive coordinator Rocky Long noticed the Boilermakers weren’t rushing as much as expected.
In the locker room, Long pulled his defense together. The veteran coach wanted to pressure Card more. Long drew up a new formation, giving the down linemen and linebackers different stunts and twists to utilize.
Marlowe Wax said it took Long just two minutes to teach Syracuse’s defense a new play, designed primarily to combat passing downs. He didn’t write down the play on a whiteboard or piece of paper. He showed it to his unit and gave the defense “a couple of seconds to think about it.”
“I think any time that a guy that’s painting a portrait, he’s a master and he wants to do a stroke that someone else hasn’t done before with the knowledge that he has, I think you should allow that person to have the creativity to be different,” head coach Dino Babers said.
Long first made a name for himself as the defensive coordinator at Oregon State, creating what became the 3-3-5 defense. A professor of defensive schemes, Long’s chaotic, fast-paced defense shaped UCLA, New Mexico and San Diego State into west coast powerhouses. Through three games with Syracuse, Long’s defense has tallied nine sacks and four interceptions while allowing just four touchdowns.

Gadsden faces long recovery after surgery to repair Lisfranc injury (PS; Leiker)
Oronde Gadsden II had successful surgery Monday in Charlotte, North Carolina, to repair the Lisfranc injury in his right foot, his father told syracuse.com Tuesday.
Gadsden faces a lengthy recovery of up to 10-12 months, including five months with screws inserted in his foot during surgery and three months of no load-bearing on his foot, his father said.
The recovery timeline means Gadsden, a top NFL prospect at his position, would be unavailable for any pre-draft workouts or Syracuse football spring camp.
Gadsden, a junior tight end and preseason All-America selection, said in a statement Saturday he has not yet considered whether he will declare for the 2024 NFL Draft or return to college for a fourth season.
The surgery was performed by top foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson, renowned in the sports world for fixing a variety of injuries like Richard Sherman’s torn achilles in 2017 and consulting on Cam Newton’s Lisfranc injury in 2019.
Anderson fixed two of Gadsden’s father’s toes during his own NFL playing career, he said, and he was the clear choice for doing Gadsden’s surgery.
“It’s part of the game,” Gadsden’s father said of how his son and family reacted to the injury. “It’s tough for all of us ... He loves being up there at Syracuse.”

Army football coach Jeff Monken understands the big task at hand as the Black Knights journey up to Syracuse for a Saturday, at noon, matchup with the undefeated Orange at the JMA Wireless Dome.
Big as in an offense that has scored a total of 148 points in its first three games. Big as in a defense that is ranked fourth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just nine points per game and already forcing eight turnovers on the season. Big as in a quarterback, senior Garrett Shrader, who rushed for a career-high 195 yards and rushed for four touchdowns and completed 14 passes for 184 yards in a 35-20 victory at Purdue last Saturday. And, big as in a veteran offensive line that is good at both opening holes for rushing yards and protecting the quarterback on passing downs.
Yes, as Monken said after Army, now 2-1, upset host Texas-San Antonio last Friday night, Army is in the middle of facing five opponents that he says could be a college football version of Murderer’s Row and Syracuse may just be among the best opponents.
“They are a scoring machine,” said Monken, in his 10th season with Army and who inked what is reported to be a three-year contract extension earlier this week that will keep him at West Point through 2027. “They go a hundred miles per hour. They run a lot of plays and they are one of the top scoring offenses in the country and one of the top scoring defenses in the country. That is remarkable. If you look at stats, that is what matters. Are you scoring more (points) and are you stopping your opponent?
“We have a tremendous challenge ahead of us. We know they are going to be extremely athletic and big and very well coach. Look at their offense, one of the great offenses in the country. Look at defense, one of the best defensives in the country. A lot of challenges this week. We will have to put some great work inthis afternoon and tomorrow and as we go through the week before we make the trip to Syracuse.”

Purdue Football: Monday Frustration (hammerandrails.com; Schneider)
I took Sunday off to let things marinate. I try not to be reactionary. That means when things go well, I try not to get too high and when things go like they went last Saturday night, I try not to get too low. Hammer and Rails, at its core, is a fan blog, if anything we try to err on the side of optimism and I didn’t have any optimism in my heart yesterday.
Now that we’re onto Monday, and that horror show is a little further in the rear view, my perspective is clearer. Purdue played well enough to win, but didn’t pay enough attention to the details to make it happen. The offense did the big stuff well. Card was dealing both inside and outside the pocket to the tune of 32-46, 323 yards, a touchdown and a pick. Some of y’all wanted a more traditional air raid attack, and that’s about as close as you’re going to get. On defense, the coverage wasn’t bad. Shrader only completed 14-28 passes for 184 yards and an interception. There were a few stupid penalties late that extended Orange drives (11 penalties for 127 yards in total...gross), but for the most part, they kept the passing game in check.
This team continues to get better in key areas.
Let’s Talk About the Offense
At the same time, that game made me want to punt kittens, and I love kittens (seriously, we have 4 cats). The offensive line continues to be an issue, and it’s not an issue with an easy solution. Getting Gus Hartwig back would help some things, but the overall talent is average at best, and that’s being kind. On most teams, our tackles would be guards, and our guards would be depth pieces. Of course, Purdue only has 3 functional tackles on the roster at the moment, their current starters and a back up whose knee squeaks when he runs. You can work around that in the passing game, but when it comes to getting the hard yards on 3rd and 2, there’s not much you can do. I know everyone wants more creativity in short yardage, but good teams line up and gain 2 yards whenever they want. Bad teams have to dig deep in the playbook to come up with short yardage plays. Purdue’s trying to be a good team, but it’s not working....

Obviously, this grade is very low because of seven combined fumbles and four overall turnovers, all in Syracuse territory. You cannot do that and expect to even sniff a win. The one positive aspect was the passing game, where Hudson Card made some nice throws to his receivers and moved around to get space to throw to them. Deion Burks, Abdur-Rahmen Yaseen, TJ Sheffield, and Max Klare are all proving to be good targets for Card. The rushing attack, however, was abysmal. No push inside again and the coaches seemed determined at times not to rush the ball outside. Throw in Devin Mockobee’s 3 fumbles (none were lost somehow) and the rushing game was lucky to muster 80 yards. This team desperately needs Gus Hartwig back and I cannot fathom why Dylan Downing has so few touches this year (15 touches in 3 games).Defense: D-
QB contain was non-existent this week as Garrett Shrader rushed for 195 yards. Read-option decimated this defense and had it not been for several dropped passes, the secondary would’ve looked inept too. The only reason I don’t give the defense an F is because they still had 4 sacks and an interception.Special Teams: C-
Just a tick under average due to the missed extra point on a botched snap. No field goal attempts, no kickoff returns, one punt return for 6yards, and 2 punts for 88 yards.Coaching: D
I can no longer defend going for it on 4th and short, especially if it’s a running play from the gun. The next time the situation comes around, take the points. So far, Graham Harrell has not impressed with his continual attempts to run the ball up the middle despite no push. Where I saw some poise was after Devin Mockobee’s third fumble. The rest of that drive, Tyrone Tracy Jr was the ball carrier and eventually ran for a touchdown. Sometimes, the best decision is not the easiest. There has to be changes out of this staff on key situations and Ryan Walters has stated there will be. We will have to wait and see....

I promise we really are trying to move on from this game. We don’t want to talk about it anymore than you do but we’ve got to at least try our best to figure out what went wrong. Drew and Garrett are back to break down what exactly went wrong during this Purdue game against Syracuse.
Why was it that Purdue simply couldn’t contain the running game of Garrett Shrader? Did Purdue beat themselves with the penalties and the turnovers or was Syracuse simply the better team?
What were the good things about this game? Were there any? Between shooting themselves in the foot there were positives found at the wide receiver position and the tight end position. Garrett talks about the room for growth that he saw.

University Football Films Collection Now Available Online (syr.edu; Hatem)
A selection of football films from the University Archives in Syracuse University Libraries’ Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) is now available online at Syracuse University Football Films Collection - Syracuse University Libraries' Digital Collections. The Libraries’ Digital Stewardship team, in collaboration with the SCRC, coordinated digitization of 430 films dating from 1949 to 1967 that included the major players wearing No. 44.
This was part of a preservation effort to ensure that this important part of University history is sustained for long-term access. The digitization of the films was made possible through funding from Life Trustees Eric ’66, G’68 and Judith C. Mower ’66, G’73, G’80, Ph.D.’84, with additional financial support provided by Trustee Patricia H. ’64, G’66 and Louis A. Mautino ’61, G’62.
Of the 430 films digitized from the larger Syracuse University Audiovisual Collection, nearly 400 are now available through SU Digital Collections, the Libraries’ digital library portal. The content forms the core of the new Syracuse University Football Films Collection, a virtual collection created for the digital library where materials can be searched by date, keyword and more. The new digital master files will be added to and actively preserved on the Libraries’ digital preservation platform, ensuring that access to these films will persist well into the future.
“These films document one of the great eras of Syracuse University football. They include substantial footage of the No. 44 greats Jim Brown, Ernie Davis and Floyd Little, as well as other notable players such as Larry Csonka, John Mackey, Fred Mautino, Lou Mautino and Jim Nance,” says Meg Mason, University Archivist. “They also document the team’s 1959 undefeated national championship season and the work of Coach Ben Schwartzwalder. There is so much history in these films, and we’re really excited to preserve them through digitization and share them with the campus community and beyond.”

Syracuse football: Dino Babers’s Army Week updates (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)
The 3-0 Syracuse Orange have returned home after a thrilling victory in front of a national TV audience. With their out-of-conference finale against Army looming, Dino Babers addressed the media on Monday:
Injury Report
Offensive linemen Kalan Ellis and Joe More did not travel with the team to Purdue; neither did wideout & return specialist Trebor Pena. When asked about updates timetables for the trio, Babers replied: “Nothing that I can talk about.”During a later question, Dino said “if Trebor Pena ever comes back” he’d be a possibility to line up at tight end - although the phrasing of that combined with his continued absence from the depth chart makes it seem like he’s still not close to a return.
He also said that WR Isaiah Jones’s limited snap count (only 19) in the previous game was “not at all” injury related. It seems a bit strange that he was barely utilized when the passing game as a whole struggled, but we’ll gladly take some positive injury news.

Syracuse football: first down offense vs Purdue (TNIAAM; Wall)
The Syracuse Orange had been a pass-heavy offense for the first two games of 2023. We suspected that those games were intentionally called to ease both Garrett Shrader and LeQuint Allen back into action after each missed some time in pre-season camp.
The injury to Oronde Gadsden certainly puts the passing game in a tougher spot and that showed in this game. Take away a 34-yard completion to Damien Alford and Syracuse gained 15 yards on the other 10 passes they attempted on first down. Moving forward it’s clear that the Orange will need to find a #1 target for Shrader to look for on first downs.

On the positive side, the running game was still responsible for some explosive plays in this one. Even with the offense becoming more one-dimensional, Syracuse found a way to end this game averaging over 5 yards on their 1st down plays.

Syracuse football only team in country with top-5 scoring offense, defense (itlh; Adler)
Three games into the 2023 season, Syracuse football has a unique and encouraging distinction across the national landscape.
Per statistics on the NCAA’s Web site, the Orange is the only team nationwide that at present has a top-five scoring offense as well as a top-five scoring defense. Some fans gripe about the level of competition so far for the ‘Cuse, and I readily acknowledge that the team’s first two foes, Colgate and Western Michigan, are sub-par.
However, this past Saturday night in a prime-time affair on NBC, Syracuse football traveled to a hostile environment and came away with a 35-20 victory at Big Ten Conference member Purdue.
Now, sitting at 3-0 and preparing to host Army this coming Saturday afternoon, the Orange is scoring 49.3 points per game, which is No. 5 nationally. On defense, the ‘Cuse is allowing just 9.00 points per contest, good for No. 4 overall.

Over the summer, Syracuse held a seven on seven camp. One of the teams that participated features players from the Buffalo (NY) area, which included class of 2024 athlete Ja'Meer Thomas out of Bennett High. Thomas was one of the fastest, quickest and most elusive players at the event. Syracuse kept tabs on the 5-10, 170 speedster, and extended an offer after watching tape from the first few games of his senior season. He was offered as a wide receiver.
"I got called down to the office," Thomas said. "My principal and coach told me the great news."
After receiving his first power five offer from the big in-state school, Thomas said he felt both excited and relieved.
"Because I love Syracuse a lot," Thomas said. "I had a great time down there. I love the environment."
After picking up the offer, Thomas admitted that committing crossed his mind. However, he wants to be smart about such an important decision and not make an emotional one. Still, Syracuse has positioned itself well to this point in his recruitment.

The Syracuse Orange kept their strong start under coach Dino Babers going following Saturday night’s 35-20 road win versus Purdue, moving to 3-0 on the season heading into this weekend’s Army game.
Winning by double-digits in West Lafayette was good, but you know what’s even better: our Duke’s Mayo Bowl O’Meter continues to be delighted with the Orange’s start to the season. And if Duke’s Mayo is happy, so are we time a million.

Hello all – Syracuse football is 3-0 and life is good. It feels so good to see most fans happy and excited for more Syracuse football.
So the ‘Cuse went to Indiana and handled business at Purdue, 35-20. And at 3-0, we are now halfway to bowl eligibility (need 3 more wins) with 3/4 (9 games) of the season left to play.
So I wanted to do some quick points and notes about the Purdue game and previewing Army on Saturday.
Here are my thoughts on the Syracuse football win at Purdue and a preview of ‘Cuse hosting Army.
Purdue Notes:
– Prayers up to a speedy recovery for Oronde Gadsden II as we learned just before the Purdue game that he will miss the rest of the season due to injury. It’s a Lisfranc injury that according to the interview with Matt Park pregame is torn tendons in his foot that require surgery this week.
– Is Garrett Shrader showing he is MVP/Heisman contender-worthy? He, LeQuint Allen Jr. and Chris Bleich are ACC players of the week so congratulations to them. Also Garrett finished the game with 195 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns (and easily could have had 5 had he not slid to just eat up clock towards the end of the game) plus 184 yards passing. Also, he might have pulled off one or two of the best fakes in college football.

Garrett Shrader Can't Survive This Offense (orangefizz.net; Simone)
Garrett Shrader did what he needed to do for Syracuse to win on Saturday. That’s the biggest headline that came out of SU’s road win over Purdue, only Dino Babers’ 7th in 32 tries on the road against power five opponents as the Orange’s head coach.
With Oronde Gadsden out for the season with a foot injury, it down grades the pass game immensely. Not only does it take a potential thousand yard receiver out of the lineup, it takes away the man opposing defenses had to double team away.
Now, there will not be nearly as many opportunities in single coverage for players like Isaiah Jones, Damien Alford, Umari Hatcher and Donovan Brown, making all of them worse off as a result. Gadsden is not only Syracuse’s best player, but arguably its most indispensable because of that very fact.
With him unavailable and in a game Babers, admittedly, thought was vital in Syracuse’s season given what’s ahead on the schedule, Shrader had to run the ball 25 times. It was an offense reminiscent of 2021, Shrader’s first year under center with SU.
Sterlin Gilbert’s attack that year was built on Shrader and Sean Tucker’s legs, and only asked its quarterback to throw when he needed to, usually unsuccessfully. Shrader showed plenty of improvement as a passer last year, but, given what we saw Saturday, both from a game plan and execution standpoint, a lot of that success seems attributable to Gadsden.

ESPN's FPI predicts outcome of major Florida State vs. Clemson matchup - Saturday Road (saturdayroad.com; Harvey)
ESPN’s FPI is projecting the outcome of every game on the Week 4 college football slate. In the ACC, that includes the major matchup between Florida State and Clemson in a game that could produce implications for the league title.
Heading into the matchup, Mike Norvell’s squad is expected to be the favorite after a 3-0 start. The FPI is currently giving the Seminoles a 57.3% chance of taking home the win while on the road against Clemson.
As for the betting line, the game opened as a pick ’em with a total set at 52.5 points. Fans looking to get in on the action can head to DraftKings to get started!
Entering the season, a number of analysts expected FSU and Clemson to meet twice in the season. The first matchup, of course, coming in Week 4 and the second expected matchup being the ACC Championship Game.
To start the season, the Seminoles have looked every bit of an ACC and national title contender with a 3-0 record and a dominant Week 1 win over LSU. While a road trip to Boston College looked shaky in Week 3, all indications point to an FSU team looking ahead to Clemson.
As for Dabo Swinney and the Tigers, things have not gone smoothly with a blowout loss to Duke in the season opener. Wins over Charleston Southern and FAU have righted the ship, but those games are a far cry from a top-5 opponent.
Saturday’s game is set for a 12 p.m. ET kickoff on ABC.

Clemson dominated from start to finish in Death Valley in a 48-14 victory over Florida Atlantic. Cade Klubnik had 4 total touchdowns to go with 16-27 passing for 169 yards. The scoring got started with a Nate Wiggins pick 6 on FAU’s very first possession of the game. Phil Mafah and Domonique Thomas each picked up touchdowns on the ground, while Clemson’s defense held the Owls to just 83 yards rushing on the night.

No. 3 Florida State recovered from a slow start, a comeback effort, and an injury scare to QB Jordan Travis to eke out the win in Chestnut Hill over Boston College, 31-29. Travis had 212 passing yards and 2 touchdowns in the win, and Johnny Wilson racked up 105 yards receiving for the Noles. The Eagles’ Thomas Castellanos was impressive in the start, with 305 yards and a touchdown through the air to go with 95 yards and a score on the ground.

No. 20 North Carolina looked strong and steady against first-time opponent Minnesota at home, taking the 31-13 victory. Drake Maye recovered from a couple of early interceptions to throw for 400+ yards (414) for only the second time in his career. He added 2 touchdowns and an additional 34 yards on the ground. Georgia Tech transfer Nate McCollum was the go-to guy for Maye, as he had 15 catches for 165 yards and a touchdown in the win.

In addition to the games already played, the ACC will be featured in three ABC games over the next two weeks, as No. 4 Florida State and Clemson play in ABC’s Saturday noon game this Saturday, Sept. 23, while in Week 5, Clemson and Syracuse will kick-off at noon ET on ABC. North Carolina is now 3-0 in back to back seasons for the first time since Mack Brown Pt. 1. Having watched upcoming opponent Pitt struggle mightily at West Virginia the other night, it looks to me the Tar Heels could start 4-0 and that hasn’t happened since 1997, Brown’s final season in Chapel Hill before taking the job at Texas. Certainly Carolina’s play in whipping physical Minnesota suggests this team can finish September undefeated, before starting a rigorous stretch of conference games come October in a much improved ACC; seven teams remain unbeaten through week three, plus NC State and Clemson look strong at 2-1.
Minnesota had allowed just 222 yards of total offense per game in the Gophers’ two wins against Nebraska and Eastern Michigan. UNC gained 75 yards Saturday in the game’s first three minutes, the final 46 coming on a Drake Maye deep ball which Nate McCollum wrestled away from a defender as he fell into the end zone.
Minnesota did not appear prepared for McCollum and that’s understandable. McCollum had been limited by injury, securing just one reception for eight yards in the first two games. But Saturday McCollum made his grand entrance for the 2023 season, thrilling the Kenan Stadium crowd with 15 catches for 165 yards, the 15 receptions just one shy of the school’s single game record. McCollum’s final snag essentially clinched victory.

They’ll always find a way to move the goalposts, the blathering Saturday morning yakkers and the national radio idiots and the writers who live off the scraps in the gutter outside the giant college football narrative factory. No matter what the ACC does, no matter how many games it wins, it’ll always play second banana to the Big Ten and SEC.
And look, OK, sometimes that is God’s honest truth. This hasn’t been the best of decades for the ACC football, with just one consistent title contender and a whole mess of underachievers, starting with Florida State and Miami and Virginia Tech, all programs that were once in the BCS/CFP conversation and now are ... not.
But in this very tumultuous season so far, after another summer of realignment continued to tear at the fabric of the sport, the ACC’s got as much to shout about as anyone. It’s 8-7 against the rest of the Power 5 with more wins against the Big Ten and SEC than any other conference, and with half the league still undefeated, still harboring various degrees of December ambition.
Turn on the television or radio, whatever your network of choice, what’s the national narrative? Not that Duke is beating up on people. Not that North Carolina is winning games it would have lost a year ago. No, it’s that Clemson is vulnerable. Or Florida State almost lost (but didn’t) at Boston College. Or that Stanford – still only unofficially embarrassing the ACC – lost to Sac State.
“I’m really proud of our league,” North Carolina coach Mack Brown said. “We’ve got a lot of good teams and with all the realignment talk, it distracts from who the teams are. These teams are playing well, they’re well coached. Syracuse going to Purdue and winning is huge. I mean, that’s huge. You start looking, Duke’s been unbelievable.”
Brown mentioned the realignment talk perhaps pointedly, with a trio of UNC-CH trustees standing in the back of the room, members of a group that famously released an unprecedented statement opposing this latest expansion on the eve of the fateful vote. He’s also not wrong to bring it up, albeit for different reasons.
Three summers of expansion, and the fact that the ACC settled for leftovers after the SEC and Big Ten ate first, the runt of the litter, only underlines the forces driving the narrative. The networks pushed the teams they wanted into those two conferences, while the ACC was left to lurch blindly on its own for what was left. It’s no coincidence. What the SEC Network wanted, it got. What the ACC Network didn’t want or need, it got anyway,
ESPN is all in on the SEC. Fox is all in on the Big Ten. (That explains the, uh, additional investment in those leagues from the networks lately.) That’s where the narrative begins, where it takes shape before filtering out, and it is always going to veer that way. It doesn’t matter what the ACC does. It’s never going to measure up. The game is rigged against it.

The ACC power rankings nearly had a major shakeup this week as the top team in the league in Florida State had to hold off Boston College late to secure a 31-29 win.
Despite the close call, the Seminoles remain ranked No. 1 after Week 3, thanks in large part to their impressive win over LSU in Week 1. The top six teams in last week’s rankings all won over the weekend, but Saturday was tough for the bottom half of the league.
Here is the updated version of the ACC Power Rankings after Week 3:
1. Florida State Seminoles (3-0)
It wasn’t pretty, but ultimately the Seminoles did what they needed to do to escape with a road win. Florida State took a three-touchdown lead over Boston College in the third quarter but allowed the Eagles to hang around and nearly paid the price.Mike Norvell‘s team will need to be much better this weekend to remain undefeated. Florida State has one of its toughest tests of the season as the Seminoles play at Clemson. FSU has dropped seven straight meetings with the Tigers.
2. Miami Hurricanes (3-0)
Miami moved up to the No. 2 spot after upsetting Texas A&M in Week 2 and maintains that position after handling Bethune-Cookman last Thursday. Mario Cristobal‘s team appears to have taken the step forward he was hoping it would in his second season.Between the transfer portal and recruiting, Miami made some serious upgrades to its roster this offseason. It also helps that quarterback Tyler Van Dyke has returned to his 2021 form when he was one of the top quarterbacks in the ACC.
3. North Carolina Tar Heels (3-0)
UNC bounced back from a less-than-stellar performance against Appalachian State to easily handle Minnesota at home over the weekend. The Tar Heels held the Golden Gophers to only 13 points and continue to play better defensively than they did a season ago.Star quarterback Drake Maye threw a pair of interceptions, but he also passed for over 400 yards and had a pair of touchdowns. The Tar Heels have a manageable schedule this year and appear to be true contenders in the ACC.
4. Duke Blue Devils (3-0)
One of the surprise teams in the ACC to this point has been Duke. The Blue Devils upset Clemson in Week 1 and have continued to play well since.Riley Leonard is proving that he is one of the top quarterbacks in the ACC, if not the country. On the other side of the ball, Duke head coach Mike Elko and Blue Devils defensive coordinator Tyler Santucci are doing an excellent job with the defense. Duke plays at UConn this weekend, before a tough stretch of four games that includes matchups against Notre Dame and Florida State.
5. Clemson Tigers (2-1)
It was a rough first six quarters to the season for Clemson, but the past six have been much better. The Tigers lost their opener to Duke and were in a tight battle with Charleston Southern for a half in Week 2.However, over the past six quarters, Clemson has outscored Charleston Southern and FAU by a combined score of 90-14. Come Saturday, we will find out just how much progress Clemson has made since dropping its opener and if the turnaround is due to the level of competition, or if the Tigers have indeed made large strides. Saturday’s game against Florida State will play a large role in determining what kind of season Clemson has.
6. Louisville Cardinals (3-0)
Jeff Brohm is off to an undefeated start in his return to Louisville. The Cardinals have wins over Georgia Tech, Murray State and Indiana through the first three weeks of the season and will now play their ACC home opener against Boston College on Saturday.Louisville has been inconsistent thus far as there have been moments where the Cardinals have looked really good and other times when they have really struggled. However, they have found a way to win all three games thus far. It helps that star receiver Jamari Thrash has emerged as one of the top playmakers in the ACC.
7. Syracuse Orange (3-0) (+1)
Dino Babers‘ club continues to move up in our ACC Power Rankings after debuting at No. 11 following Week 1. Syracuse earned a gutsy win at Purdue over the weekend to improve to 3-0.
Veteran quarterback Garrett Shrader is playing at a high level early on this season, and the Orange have a chance to move to 4-0 with a win over Army on Saturday. Should Syracuse beat Army as a 13.5-point favorite this weekend, it would be undefeated when Clemson comes to town on Sept. 30.

Three full weeks of college football are now in the books, and it was another largely successful one for the Atlantic Coast Conference.
In what was our last chance to see teams before conference play really ramps up, the ACC went 8-4 against non-conference opponents in week three, bumping the league's overall record to 26-10. While most of the competition this week came from vastly outgunned opponents, you can't argue with the results.
This week, the teams at the top stayed put (despite Boston College's best shot), where most of the shifting came in the bottom half of the rankings. Syracuse's impressive road win against Purdue and Pitt's ghastly loss at West Virginia had the biggest impact in the standings.
So where do things currently stand in the conference following the first three weeks of football? Check out our week three ACC power rankings below:
1. Florida State Seminoles
Record: 3-0, 1-0 ACCLast Week's Ranking: No. 1
Week 2 Result: W, 31-29 at Boston College
Mike Norvell says that Florida State wasn't looking ahead to Clemson and past Boston College, but their play in the second half of this game certainly doesn't suggest that. The Seminoles nearly squandered a 31-10 lead, and had BC not committed an insane amount of penalties, they might have blown it completely. At least quarterback Jordan Travis isn't seriously hurt.
2. North Carolina Tar Heels
Record: 3-0, 0-0 ACCLast Week's Ranking: No. 2
Week 2 Result: W, 31-13 vs. Minnesota
Drake Maye has had a bit of a slow start by his lofty standards, but he finally looked like what we expected in the preseason, even if it wasn't perfect. Plus, with Tez Walker now ineligible for the season, the emergence of Nate McCollum is a huge plus for that Tar Heel offense. UNC's rushing game and defensive efforts just have to get more consistent if they're to make a run at the ACC Championship.
3. Duke Blue Devils
Record: 3-0, 1-0 ACCLast Week's Ranking: No. 3
Week 2 Result: W, 38-14 vs. Northwestern
Northwestern certainly is no juggernaut, but Duke continues to look efficient on both sides of the ball. QB Riley Leonard was nearly perfect, the Blue Devils had 200 yards passing and rushing, and the defense was stifling (except on third down) from start to finish. It's still hard to believe this was a three-win team just two seasons ago.
4. Clemson Tigers
Record: 2-1, 0-1 ACCLast Week's Ranking: No. 4
Week 2 Result: W, 48-14 vs. Florida Atlantic
Unlike the team at the top of the power rankings, Clemson didn't look past their opponent ahead of a massive showdown with ACC title race implications. While the final yardage discrepancy wouldn't suggest a blowout, the Tigers got off to a 34-0 start before halftime and scored the first 41 points. QB Cade Klubnik and that Clemson secondary were extremely productive.
5. Miami Hurricanes
Record: 3-0, 0-0 ACCLast Week's Ranking: No. 5
Week 2 Result: W, 48-7 vs. Bethune Cookman
Miami got the memo to start fast against an inferior opponent as well, also getting off to a 34-0 start before the second half. There's not a lot to take away from an FCS foe, but QB Tyler Van Dyke continued to look like his old form, the Hurricanes' rushing game was a real threat, and the talent-laden defense looked cohesive. Maybe this a year that The U finally gets back on track.
6. Syracuse Orange
Record: 3-0, 0-0 ACCLast Week's Ranking: No. 8
Week 2 Result: W, 35-20 at Purdue
We finally got a chance to see what Syracuse could do against a Power Five opponent, on the road no less, and the Orange certainly were impressive. QB Garrett Shrader near single-handedly took down Purdue himself with both his arm and his legs, while the 'Cuse front seven bottled up a solid Boilermaker ground attack. For now, Dino Babers' seat is no longer hot.

This past weekend in college football was a pretty solid one for the ACC. All of the expected contenders picked up wins, with some coming against fellow Power 5 competition. One of those was North Carolina, who picked up a nice little victory over Minnesota.
With another week in the books, let’s take a look at the conference in break it down with this week’s power rankings.
1. Florida State (3-0, 1-0 ACC)
Last Week: beat Boston College 31-29
FSU played their first iffy game last week, as they ended up beating Boston College by just two, despite leading by as much as 21 earlier in the game. That being said, they’ve still done enough to hold onto the top spot, just with not as much daylight between them and field. Their next game will be an intriguing one, though.
Next Week: Saturday at Clemson
2. North Carolina (3-0)
Last Week: beat Minnesota 31-13Thanks to the Tar Heels pulling away late and beating a okay power conference opponent, we’re moving UNC up to the #2 spot this week. Even though they needed overtime to beat Appalachian State, this has still be one of the most impressive non-conference run that Carolina has put together in a while.
Next Week: Saturday at Pitt
3. Miami (3-0)
Last Week: beat Bethune-Cookman 48-7The Hurricanes did about what they should do when they blew out their FCS opponent.
Next Week: Saturday at Temple
4. Duke (3-0, 1-0 ACC)
Last Week: beat Northwestern 38-14The Blue Devils continued their nice little start to the season as they beat Northwestern. They’ll probably pick up another win this weekend, but they have some tough tests on the horizon after that.
Next Week: Saturday at UConn
5. Louisville (3-0, 1-0 ACC)
Last Week: beat Indiana 21-14With a win over the Hoosiers, Louisville did their part in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
Next Week: Saturday vs. Boston College
6. Syracuse (3-0)
Last Week: beat Purdue 35-20Is Syracuse...good? The Orange didn’t face the sternest of tests in their first two weeks, but this weekend they went on the road and beat a power conference team in Purdue. It’s still probably unlikely they challenge for a ACC Championship Game berth or anything, but they certainly could be bowling this winter.

7. Wake Forest (3-0)
Last Week: beat Old Dominion 27-24Old Dominion seems like a fairly competent Group of 5 team, but Wake Forest still arguably should’ve done better than just a three-point win.

Last Week – 14For a moment it looked like Virginia would have a shot against Maryland. Then Maryland scored 42 straight points.

Last Week – 10Virginia Tech lost 35-16 to Rutgers, and it wasn’t that close. The Hokies offense has so many issues.

Last Week – 11Georgia Tech has a legit offense that is going to cause opponents a lot headaches, but the defense is a total mess.
11. Boston College (1-2, 0-1)
Last Week – 13Boston College nearly pulled of a massive upset of Florida State. That BC team can make a bowl game, and they could throw a scare in Louisville this week.
10. Pittsburgh (1-2, 0-0)
Last Week – 9It’s time to hit the panic button at Pittsburgh. This team has major issues at QB, and it could be a long season for the Panthers.
9. NC State (2-1, 0-0)
Last Week – 8The Wolfpack should take care of business against Virginia. They are 2-1, but we’re still not sure about NC State.
8. Wake Forest (3-0, 0-0)
Last Week – 7Wake Forest got a massive fight from Old Dominion, but pulled through. The game with Georgia Tech could be an entertaining shootout.
7. Syracuse (3-0, 0-0)
Last Week – 12Ok Syracuse we see you now after that win at Purdue. Beat Army and Syracuse will start the year 4-0.
6. Clemson (2-1, 0-1)

Conference play is in full swing, and it's hard to argue that the ACC isn't among the nation's biggest winners through three weeks. Talk of the conference's demise in the realignment era appears greatly exaggerated as the league boasts a 4-2 record against the SEC entering Week 4 and fields a legitimate College Football Playoff contender in Florida State.
Headlined by the Seminoles at No. 4, the AP Poll put four ACC teams in the top 25 this week, including North Carolina at No. 17, Duke at No. 18 and Miami at No. 20. Clemson narrowly missed the poll by less than 30 points, but has an opportunity to put voters on notice during its matchup with Florida State this week.
Half of the conference's 14 teams remain undefeated entering Week 4, while another program (Clemson) has surrendered its only loss to an ACC program. Virginia is the only team in the conference without a check in the win column.
Exiting Week 3, here are the ACC power rankings.
14. VIRGINIA CAVALIERS (0-3)
Last Week's Ranking: 14 (Same)Coming off a brutal 36-35 loss to James Madison at home in Week 2, Virginia jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead at Maryland before the wheels fell off. The Terrapins scored 42 unanswered to pull out a 42-14 win. The Cavaliers are the only winless team in the ACC after three weeks, and things don't look to get any easier with matchups against NC State, UNC and Miami over the next five weeks.
13. VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES (1-2)
Last Week's Ranking: 12 (Down 1)Virginia Tech showed some fight against Purdue last week, making their anemic 35-16 loss to Rutgers all the more concerning. The Hokies looked for a spark on offense and gave Baylor transfer Kyron Drones the nod at quarterback. However, the offense still struggled, and the defense isn't playing well enough to pick up the slack, ranking No. 85 in the nation in points allowed per game (25.3). The Hokies have a tough out at home this week against a 2-0 Marshall team.
12. GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS (1-2)
Last Week's Ranking: 11 (Down 1)Haynes King continues to look the part of an upper-shelf ACC quarterback, but Georgia Tech's offense still wasn't enough to fend off Ole Miss' balanced attack. The Yellow Jackets were competitive in both of their losses this season and are a candidate to surprise some folks down the road. Head coach Brent Key has a chance to secure the first ACC win of his career at Wake Forest this weekend.
11. PITTSBURGH PANTHERS (1-2)
Last Week's Ranking: 10 (Down 1)
The Panthers' offense has a case as the worst in the ACC after Saturday's meltdown against West Virginia. Quarterback Phil Jurkovec completed just 8-of-20 passes for 81 yards and three interceptions against the Mountaineers and has yet to show any promise under center. Pitt ranks No. 94 in the nation in scoring offense (24.0 PPG) but has been solid on the defensive front, allowing just 17.0 points and racking up nine sacks through three games.
10. BOSTON COLLEGE EAGLES (1-2)
Last Week's Ranking: 13 (Up 3)This ranking might come off as a bit presumptuous, given a field goal against Holy Cross decided the Eagles' lone win. However, it looks like Boston College really has something in quarterback Thomas Castellanos, who racked up 305 passing yards, 95 rushing yards and two total touchdowns in the nail-biting loss to Florida State. He out-played Heisman Trophy candidate Jordan Travis throughout the game and will look to pick up his first win as a starting quarterback this season against a tough Louisville team.
9. WAKE FOREST DEMON DEACONS (3-0)
Last Week's Ranking: 8 (Down 1)The Demon Deacons trailed by 17 points at half at Old Dominion and had to outscore the Monarchs 14-0 in the fourth quarter to squeak out a 27-24 win. Quarterback Mitch Griffis regressed, tossing two interceptions against a secondary that hadn't picked off a pass all season. Senior wideout Taylor Morin was the star of the day, putting up career numbers with six catches for 112 yards and two touchdowns. Wake Forest opens ACC play with a tough home matchup against Georgia Tech.
8. NC STATE WOLFPACK (2-1)
Last Week's Ranking: 7 (Down 1)Level of competition is the only thing holding NC State back. The Wolfpack picked up its two wins over the likes of UConn and VMI and dropped its lone Power Five matchup with a 21-point loss to Notre Dame at home. Things don't change this week with NC State heads north for its clash with Virginia, though Brennan Armstrong's return to Charlottesville adds some intrigue for what should be an easy Wolfpack win.
7. SYRACUSE ORANGE (3-0)
Last Week's Ranking: 9 (Up 3)Syracuse is the second-biggest mover in these rankings after pulling off an impressive 35-20 win over Purdue, where quarterback Garrett Shrader totaled 184 passing yards, 195 rushing yards and four total touchdowns in easily one of the best performances of his career. The Orange are heavy favorites over Army this week and, should they win, head into a matchup with Clemson undefeated for a second-straight season.

Last Week's Ranking: 6 (Same)First-year coach Jeff Brohm has his alma mater off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2016, and the Cardinals' best ball may still be ahead of them. The play out of transfer quarterback Jack Plummer has been a little bit disappointing, but Jawhar Jordan at running back and Jamari Thrash at receiver has kept the offense afloat. Thrash leads the ACC in receiving by nearly 200 yards (329), while Jordan paces the conference in rushing with 344 yards, averaging a ridiculous 10.8 yards per carry.

For those that don't know, the Miami Hurricanes football program has never won an ACC Championship. Since coming over from the Big East in 2004, not only have the Hurricanes never won the conference championship, they've only played in one conference championship game period. That was all the back in 2017. Coming from the Big East, they were nine-time conference champions.
When Miami entered the ACC, many thought they would dominate the conference. That couldn't be farther from the truth. Miami has lost all sense of relevance since joining the conference when many thought they would bring relevancy to it. The Hurricanes have only won 10 games once since joining the conference, the same year they played for their only ACC title in which they lost to Clemson 38-3.
There's now a season with more promise and hope than there has been in years. Of course, there's always the initial hope at the beginning of the season, much like there was last season when former alum Mario Cristobal took over the program as head coach. But Miami fans were met with familiar demise early and often last season, mostly from their own home field at Hard Rock Stadium where they have to travel 25 miles from campus to get to. They finished 5-7 and lost to, of all teams, the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders. In a weird way, it was the worst of Miami seasons but it also may have been a necessity. Still, does that mean Hurricanes' football fans can actually trust this team?

Businesses along two corridors extending south from downtown Syracuse can soon apply for Onondaga County-funded grants to improve their appearances.
The Syracuse Common Council on Monday accepted a pair of $1.25 million grants from the Onondaga County Community Development Office’s Main Street Revitalization program. The county office will work with the city’s Department of Neighborhood and Business Development to administer the funds to commercial and mixed-use property owners.
One grant will target an area along a 1.2-mile stretch of West Onondaga Street and South Avenue, between the intersections with South Salina Street to Hovey Street. Onondaga County pledged those funds to the city in 2021 as part of its successful application to the state’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative program.
The state announced Syracuse as the winner of $10 million late that year. At the end of 2022, the state announced that those funds would be used for 12 projects along the corridor that’s been dubbed the Southwest Gateway Initiative.

A new horror movie is on the way from the “twisted psyche” of Syracuse University alumnus Joe Lynch.
“Suitable Flesh,” directed by Lynch and based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft, follows a psychiatrist (Heather Graham) who has an affair with a young patient suffering extreme personality disorder, leading her into dark occult danger as she tries to escape a horrific fate. The trailer appears to show Graham becoming possessed by what Barbara Crampton (“Re-Animator”) described as an “entity [that] has traveled through time taking over different people’s bodies.”
“The intimate scenes in the film very much drive the story and very much drive the characters,” Lynch told Entertainment Weekly. “Our cast were very game to explore that with us in a way that felt very mature.”
The cast includes Johnathon Schaech (”That Thing You Do!”), Bruce Davison (”X-Men”), Judah Lewis (”The Christmas Chronicles,” “The Babysitter”) and Jonah Ray (”Mystery Science Theater 3000″). Crampton and Lynch, who also appears to have a role, are listed as producers.
