World Architecture Day celebrates architecture and the commitment of architects to the world's societies, ecosystems, and cities. Created by the International Union of Architects (UIA), a "global federation of national associations of architects," it was first held in 1985 and originally took place on the first Monday in July. At the International Union of Architects Congress in Barcelona, Spain, in 1996, it was moved to the first Monday of October, to coincide with World Habitat Day. Some countries observe the day on other dates during the year. Each year the UIA comes up with a different theme that participants can tailor their events to. Common events include forums, symposia, panel discussions, conferences, and exhibitions.

Dino Babers said just enough in the underbelly of the JMA Dome following his team’s 31-14 loss to Clemson to summarize where his team is at after five games.
The squad Babers took into the season opener the first Saturday in September is a shell of itself on Oct. 1.
“There’s no doubt this team is extremely young,” Babers said.
It may look a little younger moving forward.
Emerging tight end Dan Villari and starting rover Justin Barron did not finish the game against the Tigers. If Villari is sidelined, that leaves Syracuse with two scholarship tight ends, including true freshman David Clement.
And, it’s an especially inopportune time for anyone in the secondary to be banged up with two of the ACC’s top quarterbacks on deck in successive weeks.

Syracuse dropped its first game of the season on Saturday, falling 31-14 to Clemson in the JMA Wireless Dome. Here are five takeaways from the game.
1. Miscues
We all know that Clemson is an extremely talented football team with a bunch of future NFL players. You cannot help a team like that by giving them turnovers, making mistakes, not taking advantage of opportunities they give you, etc. The fumble on the first possession set the tone for the rest of the game. Garrett Shrader made a nice play scrambling for yards to get into Clemson territory. He tried to do too much, however, and it cost him when he was hit from a defender he did not see that popped the ball loose. Two possessions later, a subpar pitch was dropped by LeQuint Allen for another fumble. On top of that, Syracuse dropped two or three would-be interceptions that may have resulted in pick sixes. Syracuse also committed nine penalties for 92 yards. Garrett Shrader missed several throws in this game, including a poor decision on the interception in the fourth quarter when the Orange was trying to rally. You cannot do these things against the top teams in the conference and expect to win.
2. Receivers
Drops came into play in a significant way once again in this one. This time, one could not place blame on the bright lights in a road environment as they could for the issues at Purdue. This was in the friendly confines of the JMA Wireless Dome. When the receivers did make nice catches, they were unable to get a foot inbounds to make it a legal catch. Then there was a lack of separation for much of the game. There were questions with this group without Oronde Gadsden and Isaiah Jones coming in. There are more following the game.
3. Offensive Line
The offensive line had easily its worst game of the season protecting Shrader. He was sacked five times in this one. Clemson had only six sacks on the season coming in. It is the second straight year the Tigers sacked SU five times. There is one other team on the schedule with a front that is as talented and athletic as Clemson's. Florida State. North Carolina's is pretty darn good as well. The line must play much better if they want to be competitive in those games. That said, I thought run blocking was pretty solid at times. LeQuint Allen had some nice holes at different times, and I thought they could have gone back to him a few more times on some drives. Some encouraging things on that front.

Clemson defense shows out with 5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles to beat previously unbeaten Syracuse 31-14 (auburnpub.com; AP)
Cade Klubnik threw two touchdown passes and Clemson's high-powered defense made a statement on Saturday in a dominant 31-14 victory against previously unbeaten Syracuse.
The Tigers (3-2, 1-2 ACC) sacked Syracuse quarterback Garrett Shrader five times, picked him off once, and forced three fumbles. They recovered two of those fumbles, the first of which came on the Orange's opening drive.
"We won the line of scrimmage," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. "I mean, we did a heck of a job up front. I think we won the matchups up front and created some disruption and we challenged them. We forced the issue."
On the first drive, Shrader took off for a 19-yard dash, but was hit hard and lost the ball. It was recovered by Clemson's Payton Page at the Tigers' 45-yard line. Clemson was initially called for a targeting penalty on the hit but after a review it was overturned.
"I just saw it clean," Swinney said. "And it looked worse than it was because (Shrader) didn't see him coming. He's not a defenseless player. He's running the ball and he's not sliding. He's not a guy that slides. He's a punishing runner. I know it looked worse than it was, but I thought it was a clean hit from the get-go."
The overturned call set Clemson up for a 14-yard touchdown on a pass from Klubnik to Troy Stellato for the first score of the game.
"Troy made a great play and just kept playing," Klubnik said. "He threw his hand up and I just kind of found him in the end zone and it was a great play by him, just kind of making it work."
Clemson led 21-7 at the half.

North Carolina opens as significant betting favorite vs. Syracuse in Week 6 - Saturday Road (saturdayroad.com; Davis)
North Carolina will be the betting favorite vs. Syracuse in Week 6.
That’s according to the initial line set by Circa Sports on Sunday afternoon. The Tar Heels are 9 point favorites, per Circa Sports. The total has been set at 56.5 points.

North Carolina is coming out of its bye week with a 4-0 record. The Tar Heels have been impressive to start the season, picking up wins over South Carolina, Minnesota and Pittsburgh during the month of September.
Quarterback Drake Maye has guided Carolina’s offense through the early part of the season as he adjusts to Chip Lindsey’s offensive system. UNC’s defense, now in Year 2 under Gene Chizik, has also been much-improved in 2023.
Syracuse is coming off of its first loss of the season at home to Clemson in Week 5. The Orange’s offense struggled to get going against Clemson’s elite defensive front.
Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon.

Clemson defense proves to be too much for Syracuse Romano)
The Clemson Tigers took down the previously undefeated Syracuse Orange (4-1, 0-1 ACC) 31-14 at the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday.
The Tigers’ (3-2, 1-2 ACC) defense led the way in their first conference win of the season, as the unit forced three turnovers and tallied a season-high of five sacks. Linebackers Barrett Carter and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. once again dominated with seven tackles each, two of which were for loss.
“We won the line of scrimmage,” head coach Dabo Swinney said after the win. “We did a heck of a job up front.”
After jumping out to an early 14-0 lead and forcing two Syracuse fumbles, the Tigers led 21-7 at the half and added another 10 points in the second half to secure a win.
Offensively, quarterback Cade Klubnik built off his Florida State performance from a week ago, as the signal caller finished 23/37 for 263 yards and two touchdowns.
“I feel like I’m getting better every game,” Klubnik said. “Just continue to get comfortable out there and feel great.”
“He’s just coming into his own,” Swinney said of his quarterback’s recent play. “He’s got a good feel for it. He’s an unbelievable competitor. He loves to prepare.”
Freshman wide receiver Tyler Brown put together the best game of his young career, catching nine passes for 153 yards and adding one rush for 23 yards as he now leads the team with 316 receiving yards.

North Carolina coach Mack Brown has said he likes to binge watch college football games on the weekend when he can, eyeing the opposition. Naturally, Brown pays closer attention to the teams the Tar Heels will face in the season, meaning he likely watched a lot of Clemson-Syracuse on Saturday.
Syracuse comes to Chapel Hill this week to face the No. 14 Tar Heels, who went into their bye week 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the ACC after opening conference play with a 41-24 road win at Pittsburgh.
The Orange (4-1, 0-1), playing at home Saturday, fell behind the Tigers 14-0 and never caught up, losing 31-14. The Syracuse defense put decent pressure on Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik, but the Tigers were 7-of-15 on third-down conversions as Klubnik was mobile enough to buy time on the move and find open receivers and passed for 263 yards and two scores.
The Syracuse offense again is built around quarterback Garrett Shrader, but with some wide receivers — including Oronde Gadsden, out for the season — injured and missing, the stress on the QB was too much against the Tigers. Clemson did a good job keeping
Shrader’s running in check. Shrader, who had 24 rushing yards on 15 carries, was sacked five times. He passed for a couple of touchdowns but also had an interception as Syracuse had three turnovers.

Babers: "First of all, I'd like to say congratulations to Clemson and coach Dabo Swinney. That was a fantastic effort by their guys. Q: Was Garrett Shrader evaluated for a concussion after taking the big hit?
Babers: "Yes he did."
Q: What did the officials tell you about why they reversed the targeting?
Babers: "They did not explain that in great detail to me."
Q: Did you feel like it should have been the way it was called originally?
Babers: "I'm not allowed to say stuff like that but I would have been in favor of them keeping it the way it was called and giving us the ball."
Q: What do you think Brady's (Denaburg) range is to make a field goal in the Dome?
Babers: "I've seen him hit over 61 yards. Have you seen his kickoffs? Have you seen where they land? He will have the school record before he leaves. The school record is 54 yards in Pitt's stadium. He will have that record before he leaves. If not his sophomore year, then his junior year or his senior year."
Q: Do you think, though, that 57 is a low percentage?
Babers: "You can't break a record unless you take a low percentage kick. Then the record is always the old record. Giving Andre Szmyt a chance to break the record in Pitt's stadium was a low percentage. But of course if you go through life worrying about that, then you're never going to be great, are you?"

Syracuse asked Dan Villari to do a little bit of everything on Saturday.
The Michigan transfer, who changed positions from quarterback to tight end last season, accounted for two explosive plays against Clemson, including a tackle-busting, 28-yard touchdown near the end of the first quarter.
Villari later took a direct snap behind center in a fresh goal-line package the team pulled out for the first time this season.
He also pulled the trigger downfield on two double-pass plays that drew a defensive pass interference penalty and resulted in a drop by an open Donovan Brown.
Villari was the team’s highest-graded offensive player in the team’s 31-14 loss to the Tigers, according to Pro Football Focus’ preliminary grades.
But his status for next week’s game at North Carolina is in question after Babers said one of his remaining offensive threats suffered an injury.
Villari transferred in at the midyear during the 2021-22 academic cycle after falling behind in Michigan’s quarterback room.

Six ways SU football blew its chance to topple Clemson: ‘I thought we beat ourselves’ (PS; $; Carlson)
In many years, Syracuse has given Clemson its best shot. In some years, the Orange has had no shot.
But in the 10th edition of Syracuse-Clemson since the two schools joined the ACC, the Orange wasted its shot to beat the Tigers.
Clemson, the ACC standard-bearer for the past decade, arrived at the JMA Wireless Dome with what appears to be one of its weaker teams since Dabo Swinney took over in 2008.
Still, the Orange needed to play well to emerge with a win. Instead, Syracuse made miscues across the board, wasting an opportunity for a rare win over the Tigers.
“We did not play well [Saturday],” Syracuse quarterback Garrett Shrader said. “I thought we beat ourselves more than they beat us today, especially on the offensive side.”
Here’s a look at the many ways it went wrong for Syracuse and some areas of concern moving forward.
Early turnovers
Shrader fumbled after a punishing hit by Clemson’s Justin Mascoll.
A targeting penalty on the play was overturned and the fumble short-circuited an opening drive where the Orange had some of its best success moving the ball.
The fumble was the first play to put a damper on a feisty JMA Wireless Dome crowd. When Clemson converted the turnover into a touchdown, it put the Orange behind against a better team.
Syracuse’s third drive also ended on a fumble when Shrader pitched the ball high and off the hands of running back LeQuint Allen. Clemson defensive end Xavier Thomas returned the fumble to the 3-yard line, and the Tigers punched it in two plays later.

Syracuse football open as one score underdogs against North Carolina Haller)
It’s back to 4-1 for the Syracuse Orange after a frustrating game against the Clemson Tigers on the weekend. They’ll need to heal up some of the self-inflicted wounds that plagued them in the 31-14 loss on the weekend. Now the Orange open road play in the ACC with a trip to Chapel Hill to take on the 4-0 North Carolina Tar Heels.
It does seem like oddsmakers saw something in that Clemson loss, as at DraftKings the Orange open within a single score on the road, with the line starting at Syracuse +6.5 for the week. The over/under line is set at 57.5. This past week, they didn’t cover against Clemson, but did hit the over. They’re 3-2 against the house this year, not covering their last two against Army and Clemson. The last three weeks the under has come in as well, with the offense sputtering a bit.
North Carolina is 4-0 on the year, and will be coming off the bye week as they host the Orange on 10/7. Their wins this season are over South Carolina, Appalachian State, Minnesota and Pitt, so solid opposition and worthy of their ranking, coming in at #15 in the country. The Tar Heels are 3-1 against the spread this year and will be coming in 2-2 on the over/under.

Sour Grapes from Shrader After Loss to Clemson (theclemsoninsder.com; Burnett)
Let’s take a rewind to ACC Kickoff. Syracuse quarterback Garrett Shrader was talking about the matchup with Clemson, and he gave the Tigers some bulletin board material.
”I think it’s our year to take them down, hopefully, and we just got to be ready to play and take it one week at a time and I’m excited,” Shrader said.
Never call your own shot, and Shrader’s claims didn’t live on the field. It was evident that Clemson wanted to send a message to the mobile quarterback early as defensive end Justin Mascoll leveled him, forcing a fumble which the Tigers recovered.
That was just the start. Clemson finished the game with five sacks and completely shut down a prolific rushing game led by Shrader. It was time for the Tigers defense to play with some swagger, but it was hard to expect it in such fashion on the road.
Following the game, Shrader talked about his offensive performance and took the blame for the Orange’s struggles. He finished the game 15-29 for 181 yards and two touchdowns, while two turnovers and 1.6 yards per carry derailed his day.
Shrader credited Clemson’s defense, but he still didn’t feel like that was the reason for their shortcomings.
”They’ve got great players, but they played exactly how we thought they would and we were prepared. We just did not play well, I thought we beat ourselves more than they beat us,” Shrader said.
Shrader delivered his best Dennis Green impression on that one, but the Tigers showed a lot of identity and ferociousness in the JMA Wireless Dome. It’s something for Clemson to build off of, whether the Syracuse quarterback thinks it was forced mishaps or not.

The Clemson Tigers got back into the win column on Saturday with an impressive win over Syracuse, who entered the game undefeated. The Tigers dominated the Orange 31-14 after falling short against Florida State last week.
The Tigers came out firing on all cylinders and took a 21-7 lead heading into halftime. Quarterback Cade Klubnik got back on track, throwing for two touchdowns and 263 yards. Freshman wide receiver Tyler Brown stepped up for the Tigers and had a career-high day with nine receptions for 153 receiving yards.
Clemson football: A step in the right direction
The Tigers were efficient on both sides of the ball, but the defense was especially dominant, sacking Syracuse quarterback Garrett Shrader five times and forcing three fumbles. Of the three fumbles, the Tigers recovered two of them, including one on the Orange's first drive following a massive hit on Shrader by defensive end Justin Mascoll.The Orange were held to 100 yards rushing with a 2.9 yard per carry average. Shrader was held to 181 yards passing with two touchdowns and an interception.
Controlling the line of scrimmage
Clemson looked like the physical team we've grown accustomed to on Saturday. If the Tigers can play with that consistency more on the line of scrimmage, Clemson can shake things up in the ACC.Coach Swinney touched on the Tigers' performance in the trenches.

Boost from Troy Stellato
Sophomore wide receiver Troy Stellato scored his first touchdown of the season after battling back from injuries. He ended the day with four grabs for 37 yards."Troy made a great play and just kept playing," Klubnik said. "He threw his hand up and I just kind of found him in the end zone and it was a great play by him, just kind of making it work."
Explosive Plays
The Tigers' offensive struggles didn't make an appearance versus the Orange.Junior running back Phil Mafah iced the game in the fourth quarter with a 32-yard touchdown rush with six minutes left. Fellow junior running back Will Shipley also had a rushing touchdown, while junior wide receiver Beaux Collins scored on a 47-yard reception for Klubnik's second passing touchdown.

Both defenses had a good day in Syracuse, New York Saturday when Clemson Football defeated the Orange 31-14.
Neither offense was completely shut down. Syracuse mounted a solid drive of eight plays and 75 yards behind the arm of Garrett Shrader and the hands of Dan Villari (who converted to tight end from quarterback) that finished with a touchdown.
The Orange’s other touchdown came off a Clemson fumble, which gave them a short field. It was for 42 yards total.

Syracuse’s defense wasn’t shabby. Clemson had five drives over fifty yards and scored on all but one of them. One was a missed field goal, and the other was a turnover on downs when the Orange sacked Cade Klubnik on 4th down.

On the fourth offensive snap of Saturday’s Clemson-Syracuse football game, momentum shifted for good with a big hit and a penalty review.
And Dino Babers was less than thrilled.
Speaking after the Tigers’ 31-14 road win against the Orange, Babers, the Syracuse football coach, spoke carefully yet clearly while discussing a critical first-quarter play involving Clemson defensive end Justin Mascoll and Syracuse quarterback Garrett Shrader.
Four plays into the game, Shrader scrambled 19 yards for a first down before Mascoll hit him hard from his left side and forced a fumble. Clemson defensive tackle Payton Page recovered the ball at midfield, and the Tigers promptly took a 7-0 lead they’d never lose Saturday on a Cade Klubnik touchdown pass to Troy Stellato.
Before that, though, referees initiated a targeting review to see if Mascoll had led with the crown of his helmet while tackling Shrader on a play that gave Clemson an immediate boost in what wound up as the team’s first ACC win of the season.
A chorus of boos rained down from JMA Wireless Stadium as officials announced there was no foul for targeting, which would’ve given Syracuse the ball back at Clemson’s 45-yard line.
Babers, who critiqued the officiating following Clemson’s 27-21 win over Syracuse in Death Valley last season, addressed the moment in his postgame news conference.

Former Syracuse University linebacker Lee Kpogba had a big game as West Virginia ended TCU’s 10-game Big 12 regular-season winning streak with a 24-21 road win on Saturday.
Kpogba had 11 tackles, eight solo, a sack and broke up a pass for the Mountaineers. It was the fifth time he’s had double-digit tackles in a game in his two years at West Virginia
“Whenever you come into an opposing team’s stadium and come out with a win, it always feels good,” Kpogba said after the game.
Kpogba was one of Syracuse’s’ top recruits in the Class of 2019. He played two seasons for the Orange, with most of his contributions coming on special teams and as a reserve linebacker. He was suspended indefinitely by the Orange after the 2021 season for undisclosed reasons and did not play for the Orange again. He played the 2021 season at East Mississippi Community College before committing to West Virginia before the start of last season.
Kpogba has 40 tackles in five games this season.

Luke Benson, tight end, Georgia Tech: Benson started and had three targets but did not have a reception as the Yellow Jackets lost to Bowling Green, 38-27.
Ja’Had Carter, safety, Ohio State: Ohio State had a bye week.
Duce Chestnut, cornerback, LSU: Chestnut did not play in LSU’s 55-49 loss to Ole Miss.
Jatius Geer, edge, South Carolina: Geer had one tackle in South Carolina’s 41-20 loss at Tennessee.
Courtney Jackson, wide receiver, Arkansas State: Jackson had four catches for 75 yards and had his fourth touchdown reception of the season as Arkansas State easily beat Massachusetts 52-28. Jackson also returned two punts for 28 yards.
Jackson caught a 4-yard pass from Jaylen Raynor with 4:10 left in the first half to put the Red Wolves up 31-7. Jackson has 14 catches for 274 yards this season.
Jawhar Jordan, running back, Louisville: Jordan was largely held in check by the North Carolina State defense on Saturday, gaining just 32 yards on 16 rushes and catching one pass for 26 yards, but the Cardinals improved to 5-0 with a 13-10 road win.

The Syracuse Orange lost to the Clemson Tigers to fall to 4-1 in 2023.
If we posted that in August, no one really blinks do they? Now, that doesn’t mean to say that Syracuse fans should feel good about yesterday’s game because as I said in the takeaways, it was a missed opportunity.
Now with games at North Carolina and Florida State I can already hear the “same as 2022” refrain from a good portion of the Orange faithful. Again, this doesn’t mean you can’t be disappointed or question things which happened against Clemson and are likely to happen as road underdogs the next two weeks.
Should Syracuse drop the next two and fall to 4-3, is it somehow different than what the majority of fans projected? No.
Not only that but the post-bye portion of the schedule looks even more forgiving than we thought. Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Pitt, BC and Wake haven’t looked like competent football teams in the first month of the season. We know the Orange won’t get Oronde Gadsden or David Wohlabaugh, Jr. back, but can the Syracuse team improve before the end of October? Sure. I think you can see the possibilities on both sides of the ball.

Yesterday was bad. A game that had all the hype, Syracuse undefeated, Clemson 2-2. The Orange were supposed to have a good shot. But the game was anything but close. The Tigers mauled the Orange 31-14. Last years loss to Clemson was the start of a five game losing streak. What do the ‘Cuse have to do to ensure a similar losing streak doesn’t happen in 2023?
Penalties
We have to start here. There is no other choice. Once again, under Dino Babers penalties plagued the Orange. It’s hard to know where to start. A running into the kicker and kick catch interference should both never happen. The number of pass interferences was terrible. But, the one that will stick out was the Marlowe Wax unnecessary roughness. The captain forced an incomplete pass, got the stop, then got into the face of Cade Klubnik and bumped his chest. This extended the drive and instead of the Orange getting good field position, they started at their own five. After how last year’s game went, with the game-changing unnecessary roughness, this just can’t happen. And penalties like that can’t happen again this season.
Keep Getting Dan Villari Involved
I don’t want to get into my own head too much… but I predicted a big Clemson win and for Dan Villari to be a breakout player after a few games. Villari can be a special talent for this year’s team. He had two massive catches yesterday, threw a pass, and took two snaps as a wild cat QB. Continue to get Villari involved as much as possible and this offense can have success. It creates another thing for defenses to worry about. Right now, without Oronde Gadsden, there isn’t too much defenses are worrying about.

The Las Vegas Raiders released defensive end Chandler Jones on Saturday, ending a tumultuous final month with the club in which he lashed out several times on social media.
The Raiders’ decision to release Jones, a former Syracuse football standout who had been on the non-football illness list, came one day after he was arrested by Las Vegas police for allegedly violating a domestic violence temporary protection order.
Jones is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 4.
Jones’ issues with the Raiders first surfaced shortly before Las Vegas’ season opener on Sept. 10 at Denver when he accused the team of locking him out of the facility. He was especially critical of coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler.
This week, Jones was highly active on X, the social media platform formerly called Twitter, making unusual allegations regarding the death of former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, among other bizarre posts.

Clemson football got its first ACC win of 2023 with its 31-14 victory at Syracuse on Saturday. It was an important step forward for the Tigers after starting 0-2 in conference play for the first time since 2010.
Clemson (3-2, 1-2 ACC) managed to avoid a hangover from an emotional overtime loss to Florida State the week prior, putting up a strong defensive performance and taking advantage of mistakes by Syracuse (4-1, 0-1).
There was a lot to like in the win, especially in a bounce-back game for the Tigers. But among the most intriguing things to track going forward are Clemson's wide receivers — who is used in the passing game and when and how.
Here are the two storylines as the Tigers turn their attention to Wake Forest (3-1, 0-1) on Oct. 7 (3:30 p.m., ACC Network) at Memorial Stadium.
What happens with Tyler Brown when Antonio Williams returns?
Freshman receiver Tyler Brown got his second start against Syracuse with sophomore Antonio Williams (ankle) out again. Brown had a fantastic game with nine receptions for 153 yards, both the most in his young career.
We don't yet know when Williams might return to start in the slot, but it's clear that Brown needs to be on the field more than he might as Williams' backup. Both coach Dabo Swinney and offensive coordinator Garrett Riley have been asked if they would consider moving Williams to allow both him and Brown to play at the same time, and both said they're open to the idea.
"Anything is possible," Swinney said after beating FAU on Sept. 16.
Whenever Williams comes back, how Clemson decides to use both him and Brown will be something important to watch.
What role is Troy Stellato carving out for himself?
The next biggest surprise for Clemson is Troy Stellato. After redshirting in 2021 and suffering a torn ACL before the 2022 season, the former four-star receiver is finally getting meaningful playing time.
Against Florida State, he had had four catches, three for first downs, and 41 yards. He had another four receptions for 37 yards against Syracuse and his first career touchdown. He was the second most-targeted Clemson receiver and third in yardage for the day. He did have one dropped pass.

A packed crowd at Wallace Wade Stadium and a ferocious second-half comeback couldn’t prevent a game-winning touchdown by Notre Dame running back Audric Estime to hand the Blue Devils their first loss of the season Saturday. Even worse, junior quarterback Riley Leonard may miss time with an apparent leg injury that occurred on the team’s final possession of the game.The 21-14 loss saw Duke fall to No. 19 in the AP poll, while the Fighting Irish were bumped up to No. 10. Despite the loss and potential implications for the rest of the season, Duke extended its streak in the top-25 this season to five weeks, its longest since 2013. After a bye week, the Blue Devils play N.C. State at home Oct. 14.
SEC brawls
The SEC is no stranger to intense, heart-pounding college football moments, and Saturday delivered on this trend. No. 1-ranked Georgia narrowly skated by Auburn 27-20 thanks to a 157-yard day by star tight end Brock Bowers. Meanwhile, Kentucky earned a No. 20 spot on this week’s AP poll after a dominant win against then-No. 20 Florida, who slipped out of the poll.Perhaps the best game of the weekend was an offensive cornucopia featuring LSU at Ole Miss. The two teams combined for 104 points and over 1,300 yards, while both quarterbacks threw for four touchdowns and no picks. In the end, it was Rebel signal-caller Jaxson Dart who led his team to victory, rushing for a score and throwing another one in the last 5:06 to win, 55-49. Ole Miss skyrocketed up to No. 16 this week, while LSU fell to No. 23.
Red Rage is back?
Amid ACC squads like Florida State, North Carolina and Duke earning time in the national media spotlight, Louisville has quietly been making a name for itself. The Cardinals currently sit at the top of the ACC, with their most recent win a 13-10 nailbiter over conference foe N.C. State.Following the win, Louisville earned a No. 25 placement on this week’s AP poll, the first time the Cardinals have been ranked since 2017. That season, Heisman winner Lamar Jackson was leading their roster. The Cardinals hope to stay undefeated heading into a tough back half of the year that features opponents like Notre Dame and Duke.

It was not the best week for the ACC.
Georgia Tech was a three-touchdown favorite against Bowling Green at home and lost. The Yellow Jackets were thoroughly outplayed by the Falcons at home and any chances Georgia Tech had of going to a bowl game are likely done. Duke could not capitalize on its opportunity against Notre Dame, even though the Blue Devils played well.
Clemson was able to defeat Syracuse this week and show that they still have one of the most talented rosters in the ACC and could win out.
A lot of the top teams in the conference were off this week and will return to play this week. Florida State, North Carolina, Miami, and Louisville remain unbeaten after this week and the Cardinals are the next ACC team that gets a crack at Notre Dame.
So who moved up and who moved down this week in the ACC?
14. Virginia (0-5). Last week's ranking: 14
The Cavaliers are the last team in the ACC that has not won a game this year, but they were oh-so-close against Boston College. Quarterback Tony Muskett threw three touchdowns and UVA took an early lead, but could not hold on. There are still opportunities for wins (William and Mary, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech), but this is still the ACC's worst team.13. Georgia Tech (2-3). Last week's ranking: 8
Georgia Tech takes the biggest fall this week. That is what happens when you lose at home as a three-touchdown favorite against Bowling Green. The defense was unable to stop Bowling Green yesterday, allowing nearly 450 yards and the Falcons went 10-17 on third down. Quarterback Connor Bazelak had a great day and picked apart the Yellow Jackets secondary.This is a devastating loss for Brent Key and the program. After looking improved through the first four weeks, this is a major step back and likely means no bowl game for the Yellow Jackets in 2020. Georgia Tech travels to Miami this week.
12. Pitt (1-4). Last week's ranking: 11
Pitt was a road favorite against Virginia Tech, but the Hokies emerged victorious. Phil Jurkovec had his best game as a Panther, but the defense could not stop a Virginia Tech offense that has struggled all season. A bowl game is looking very unlikely at this point for Pitt, who does not play next week.11. Boston College (2-3). Last week's ranking: 12
The bottom of the ACC is a bit hard to figure out right now with a lot of teams trying to race to the bottom. The Eagles went down early against Virginia yesterday, but Jeff Hafley's team found a way to win. Quarterback Thomas Castellanos had a solid day and Lewis Bond had over 100 yards receiving. BC can get to .500 this week if they can find a way to defeat Army.10. Virginia Tech (2-3). Last week's ranking: 13
Credit to Brent Pry for being able to get his team up for a big win against Pitt at home. Quarterback Kyron Drones had his best game as a Hokie and Virginia Tech ran for close to 200 yards on Pittsburgh. There are still plenty of challenges ahead for Virginia Tech, starting with a road trip to Tallahassee this week to face Florida State, but the hot seat talk for Pry can cool for at least one week.9. NC State (3-2). Last week's ranking: 9
NC State had chances to win on Friday and end Louisville's undefeated season, but the Wolfpack's offense continues to be dismal, and Virginia transfer Brennan Armstrong has had a rough start to the season. NC State is off this week and needs to be able to figure something out on offense if they want to be able to win 7-8 games.8. Wake Forest (3-1). Last week's ranking: 10
Wake Forest was off this week and returns to action next week against Clemson.7. Syracuse (4-1). Last week's ranking: 6
Syracuse tried to hang around after Clemson went up 14-0, but the offense is just too banged up right now to be effective against a defense like Clemson. The Orange are too reliant on running quarterback Garrett Shrader and have to find a way to be able to score points going forward. Another big challenge awaits Syracuse this week in Chapel Hill against North Carolina.6. Clemson (3-2). Last week's ranking: 7
Dabo Swinney was able to get his team focused after the tough loss to Florida State and go on the road and defeat Syracuse and end their undefeated season. The defense held Syracuse to under 300 yards yesterday and quarterback Cade Klubnik tossed two touchdowns. The rushing attack could still improve, but the Tigers will take a win any way they can get it. A home game against Wake Forest is next on the schedule.5. Louisville (5-0). Last week's ranking 5
Louisville is 5-0 under Jeff Brohm, but it was close to losing its first game on Friday against NC State. Turnovers and an inability to run the ball plagued Louisville on Friday night, but the big thing for them is that they won and remain undefeated in ACC play. The Cardinals have a huge opportunity against Notre Dame at home next week....

Thirty-one seconds.
That’s all that stood between Duke and the ACC from making yet another loud statement about the quality of the league this season.
Even though the Blue Devils weren’t able to hold onto a 1-point lead for those final 31 seconds in a heartbreaking 21-14 loss to No. 11 Notre Dame on Saturday, their effort – combined with the exposure afforded by the presence of ESPN’s College GameDay on campus for the game – at least highlighted that they’re a legitimate team capable of playing on even terms with anyone in the country.
And maybe their dramatic down-to-the wire battle with the Irish distracted the national media from Georgia Tech’s horrible performance against Bowling Green.
Besides Duke, Syracuse also lost for the first time this season. But Louisville improved to 5-0 by beating NC State on Friday night. That leaves the ACC with 4 unbeaten teams, 3 of which had open dates and didn’t play.
Of the teams that did play, here’s what we learned in Week 5:
Boston College
Unfortunately, we were reminded yet again that football is a violent sport. And why such a heavy emphasis is being placed on eliminating helmet-to-helmet contact.It happened midway through the 3rd quarter of Saturday’s game when Eagles wide receiver Ryan O’Keefe and Virginia defensive back Malcolm Greene collided as O’Keefe reached down in an attempt to catch a low pass from quarterback Thomas Castellanos.
Both players lay on the turf for several minutes while being attended to by medical personnel. Greene eventually got up and walked to the locker room. O’Keefe had to be immobilized, taken from the field on a stretcher and transported to Mass General Hospital.
No further statement has been issued on his condition, though the UCF transfer could be seen giving a thumbs up signal as he was taken from the field.
As for the game, we learned that the Eagles are capable of winning a game in spite of themselves. They did it despite turning the ball over 4 times and spotting the Cavaliers a 21-7 halftime lead.

With more than a third of the college football season in the books, we can safely say we know more than we did a month ago, but there’s much yet to be learned. As such, every result can be overamplified with sample sizes still relatively small.
We’re back once again to look at the biggest overreactions from the weekend, and to hopefully provide a bit of perspective.

Somebody else should be No. 1
Generally speaking, poll voters are reluctant to move a team down in the rankings as long as said team keeps winning, no matter how pretty or ugly the victory may be. Some critics of this methodology point out, quite rightly, that the standards for the No. 1 team ought to be higher. The premise, after all, is to name the best team in the country, and if said No. 1 team doesn’t look the part, perhaps some other squad should be considered....

Trash piled up. A homeless “encampment” moved in. Recently, an all-night club frequented by what neighbors called a “biker gang” started up, creating what they say was yet another nuisance in the area, with loud noise and people urinating in the street.
These are among the many issues raised in the past two or three years by residents and business owners in and around the 400 block of Burnet Avenue in Syracuse. Their frustration is aimed at a series of properties on one side of Burnet Avenue, including part of the historic former New York Central Railroad Station, all owned by developer Tom Hornstein.
This week, the Syracuse codes enforcement department declared the rental space occupied by the bikers’ nightclub to be “unfit for human occupancy,” forcing it to shut down. The city said the space, leased to the group by Hornstein, was operating illegally as a bar and club, without proper licenses (and no rest rooms).
But that’s likely not the end of what’s been a years-long dispute between neighbors in the Hawley-Green area.
The shutdown of the club space appears to be at least a temporary victory for the neighbors who have accused Hornstein of disregarding their concerns about troubles at his properties for more than two years.
“Am I happy the city did this? The answer is yes,” said Michael Leone, owner of a building at 443 Burnet Ave. across from Hornstein’s properties. It’s home to the 443 Social Club, a music venue operated by by his brother and sister-in-law. “Do I trust him (Hornstein) not to let stuff like this happen again? Based on what we’ve seen in the past few years, the answer is absolutely not.”
But Hornstein insists he is doing his best to help redevelop properties in a once rundown area, some of which have been vacant for more than 60 years.
He said he’s spent $750,000 on the properties in the past two years. He said his vision for the area, which he calls “Burnet Square,” is a mix of commercial and retail businesses, including an antiques and art gallery and some light industrial operations. His group of buildings and properties run from the old train station west along Burnet to Catherine Street, and butt up against the Interstate 690 embankment.
